What Happened to the BEST QB in UCLA Football History? (Brett Hundley)

UCLA has had some fun players such as Troy Aikman and Josh Rosen, but the best QB in school history (IMO) came at the beginning of the decade and was at one point considered to be the top QB in his draft class. Sadly, things didn't quite work out, he is out of the NFL and may be done with football, so what happened to Brett Hundley? Enjoy!

I think Brett was one of UCLA's best scrambling QBs, he was a gutsy running QB and wasn't shy about running the ball or taking a hit. He turned a lot of dismal plays into big yardage plays because of his running. I recall that he had a really good arm; yeah, some interceptions, but offset by a lot of excellent passes. I'm surprised and disappointed that his pro career didn't get off the ground as well as I thought it would - thanks for this vid and update on him.

Glad you picked up one of the guys I wanted. Hundley and UCLA were so fun to watch back then. That program hasn't been worth watching since left. Hell the Pac hasn't really been that good since then. Man in 2013 5 teams finished with double digit wins and another with 9 wins, and in 2014 4 teams finished with double digit wins and 2 more finished with 9 wins. College football was more fun when there were more competitive teams around.

Brett was such an incredible dude, I actually met him and a few other guys, such class and kindness. The Trojan killer! I’m glad he stayed. The nfl teams are missing out.

In college, Brett was slow to pick up secondary receivers and was confused by defensive switching around prior to the snap. He had a weakened offensive line. He got clobbered a lot. He took off running early, if he heard footsteps behind him. He was a classy, exciting collegiate player and as good as anybody UCLA ever put out there. But, his skill set didn't mesh well against pro defenses.

UCLA had a solid team and I enjoyed watching him play. Even so, I was shocked to hear he was so highly ranked as an NFL QB.

me too! I was stunned to hear that Hundley was highly rated as potential NFL QB. Scott Fisher was suggesting he should come out for the 2014 NFL draft, which was the year he bypassed. I was thinking that Blake Bortles and Johnny Manziel was overrated. but I still didn't think Hundley was going to be a 1st round pick over Teddy Bridgewater, Derek Carr, or Jimmy Garoppolo either. All 5 QBs were mentioned in the top 50 picks in most mock and Hundley wasn't even mentioned back then when he decided to go back for his 4th year Junior season.

When you posted "What Happened to the BEST QB in UCLA Football History"? I was like .... please don't let it be Ben Olson! By the way, Rick Neuheisel and my buddy Bret Johnson can make that claim in realms of UCLA football. Tommy Maddox is also good. Hundley is a step up from Dorian Thompson-Robinson. He might have good stats and have terrific teammates back then to help the team to get 9 wins seasons, but he was drafted in the right spot. I don't think him leaving early will helped him back then. Maybe with a better luck in drafting to a team with scheme that can helped taken advantage of his skills. I don't think he's a bust, just not "the starter" people envisioned of him like they did with Josh Rosen or Tommy Maddox. Ps. If you are doing Pac 12 QBs, do what happened to Ben Olson. Seriously, that guy was considered back recruited QB at 2002 high school class....over Vince Young! You should lead that with Best QB in UCLA Football history.

@@stancurry6265 Yeah, Ben Olson was the #1 QB in his HS recruiting class. He went to BYU and went straight to oversea mission and stationed in Canada for two years. Came back and transferred to UCLA. In fact, ESPN had him as the #1 overall player in 2002 from Thousand Oaks High. www.espn.com/recruiting/s/2001/1220/1299103.html Vince Young was like at #4 overall prospect. Maurice Clarett was #2 with a forgotten guys like Matt Gutierrez (Dear Scott Fisher, another possible candidate for your video). The real interesting story that year was that UCLA lost out on getting a local kid like Ben Olson, so they settled on another Olson for QB....Drew Olson instead! It was funny at the time. LOL

@@ultrustic yea maybe Ben was higher on those older sites, I think I’m basing it on that 247 sports historical ranking which has Vince at like 2..that’s interesting you mention Gutierrez, you’re likely from N CA, and probably around my age..I know all about him..did he have an interesting college story though? From what I remember he just basically got beat out by Chad henne yea? Mia had another highly regarded Bay Area kid too during that time that went to the same HS as ken Dorsey..

I remember Hundley as a backup in Green Bay. He reminded me of a poor man's Lamar Jackson. He was a good athlete who could make things happen with his legs but he was not a good passer. Hundley was not a good enough passer to be an NFL starting quarterback.

Definitely do Brock Berlin, solid Miami transfer QB who never really got a shot in the league. Was Mr Football for his home state as well as an all american. One of his first starts was the greatest comeback in Miami History. Won an orange bowl as well.

That’s an interesting one. Forgot about him. I always thought he should do Kyle Wright but Berlin May be a little more interesting. He was at UF briefly too originally and ended up playing against them. I think he’s still ranked as one of UFs 3-5 best recruits ever

Despite what you said he was horrible when he had his chance with the Packers. The coaches thought he had the offense down in practice but just couldn't swing it in games. This happened with Packer backups a lot with that staff. Maybe if they went with his strengths he could have had success.

Not being as good as Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson and Kyler Murray. He’s not great but if, from the onset he went to a spot where he’s be a clear #1 and developed as one who knows? Also 2015 was a bad year for QB landing spots outside the top 2 (and no way was he better than Jameis or Marcus). After those top 2 these teams picked QBs: New Orleans The Jets Green Bay. 2 of those 3 have MVPs. No chance a rookie is going to start there so you’re not getting first team duties and when you are it’s emergency situations or blowouts.

Fair assessment. He was a quality QB for UCLA but I'd argue Drew Olson did more with a lot less and also had a much more prolific final season which was overshadowed by the 05-06 USC juggernaut. Hundley was the poor man's Mariota. He never took the next step from his solid freshman season. He consistently struggled with accuracy and against top tier opponents his inability to read defenses and accurately deliver the ball really cost UCLA. If I remember correctly he never beat the Ducks or Stanford. His only marketable upside for the NFL was his size and mobility but he never had the accuracy or intellect to be successful at the higher level. I think if he came out early, these flaws would have been noticed in the draft process and he still wouldn't have been taken in the first day. Then we would be watching a video about why he should have stayed at UCLA for four years. But all that aside, great human being, great athlete and for the first time in a long time, made UCLA football exciting.

IMHO: U r right, he should have left UCLA one year earlier. He had really weak coaching and really awful play calling that had him repeatedly running into piles and getting crunched, which ultimately resulted in those untalented coaches getting fired. Not sure what happened to Brett in the pros. He never looked comfortable. He is now the Colts. Wish him the best of luck there. For my money, Aikman was the most dazzling, McNown was the overall best and Rosen was the most hyped. DRT has worked hard but you can see the stark difference in quality when you watch a far more polished and experienced QB like Bryce Young, who is my early Heisman pick. Wish the Bruins the best but don’t think Chip Jelly is the answer.

Yah I would put Aikman, Gary Beban and probably even Cade McNown above him. He wasn't that great of passer compared to those 3 which is why he was taken in the 5th round.

Yeah hundley is okay but best in ucla ever look up troy aikman there have been some studs who went to UCLA honestly hundley couldn't win big games he could not win big games basically this is basically the equivalent of saying john david booty was the best quarterback usc ever had you should probably research UCLA football history and in all honesty stats are inflated in today's game so its totally different from 90s or 80s ucla isnt on par with USC but it's a solid program I would go as far as to say this look up historic teams and research the quarterbacks stats what they accomplished because hundley was maybe better than dorian t Robinson but there are still guys like cade McCown who was on the cover of ncaa gamebreaker 2000 who was that guy watch the texas game I mean hes a step up from dorian t Robinson
