Fremont Nebraska is a awesome Hot spot for railfaning Union Pacific freights headed in the Omaha subdivision or headed up onto the Blair Sub. For Union Pacific it is the most busy place in all of Eastern Nebraska. Along with UP is the BNSF Sioux City Subdivision which doesn’t see all that much mainline action but can have some interesting switching and local action. If your in Eastern Nebraska or Neighboring states this is a must see place. But at one time it was more then just theses railroads. There was once a short passenger line Called the Fremont & Elkhorn Valley Railroad. This is its story and history.
I don’t own most of the clips in this video and I have given credit to them.

Me and my siblings, as well as everyone on my dads side going back to my great grandpa grew up right along these tracks. I’ve walked up and down the BNSF line a handful of times but I haven’t walked along these tracks since for about a decade they’ve been covered in trees and bushes, but my dad has told me stories about crawling underneath in the drains when a train would come and making branch huts in the space between that and the bnsf line. I can’t wait for the hooper to Fremont trail to be done because it’s such an interesting path going through what once was an important route. I’ve been on the trail from Central City to Marquette, so I hope this abandoned line trail will be just as good.

I grew up in Des Plaines Illinois where there were 3 railroads. SOO Line, Milwaukee Road and of course Chicago North Western. Noticed they were all mentioned here. This was very interesting and nicely done.

@@unionpacificomaha The industry was no longer regulated so they could do anything they wanted. The government is controlled by highway and airline people. They know if you deregulate railroads they merge up and get rid of competition. Mergers are about having less. Driving rates up, making other non rail carriers more competitive for most shipments by rail. These massive take overs got rid of jobs, ruined towns and screwed over employees and customers. With less jobs and higher rates. Which are passed on to consumers. Just look at towns today that have lost their rail transportation.

Thanks for taking me down memory lane. I grew up in Hooper. I remember one summer they had to stop train just before it entered town to let the fire department to respond to an emergency. If I had the money, I would repair and add on to the line. I would have it go from Omaha to Norfolk, Nebraska on existing rail. Stopping in Schuyler, Columbus and Madison. The reason I would not have it stop in Hooper is because there is a new(ish) bypass in the way. There are also plans to make 275 four lanes all the way to West Point.

Cowboy was also the name of the local passenger train, ran on it. Most revenue was the mail and packages . When that was put on trucks the train was finished. The small mail shipments left and small packages were on the highway bus line. Arrow Stages. When the trucking lobby got that business the bus disappeared too. Air Services not maintained by the government for high income people are gone too now.

Is that the crossing they were shoving back and a truck hit the volunteer flagging the crossing from the caboose? Killed him I think. It's a busy crossing had lights and bells on it no gates.

The group borrowed money from a bank for the line $200,000 and NEVER PAID IT BACK OR THE INTEREST ON THE LOAN. In a clean up of the banking industry from bailouts and corruption they had a non preforming asset. So the bank sold the loan to a scrapper. All he had to do is wait. And watch the railroad fall apart. The government gave them a year to fix cross level track conditions. Nothing was done. So they shut them down. Now the rail is being torn up. The few members left have abandoned the few assets left. This group was never very progressive. The profit center was the dinner train. Which did not share revenues with the museum. They got the state of Kansas to pay to move them down there. Where they operate today. These are the same people that would be against big government! Except when it benefits them.
