What Happened to the SHIP from PLANET of the APES? 

This is one of my favorite channels to escape the insanity of the world

My grandfather actually built the ship, on loan from Warner Bros. He also worked on Illustrated Man, creating the funky foam trees.

As a kid in the early 70's, I remember thinking that "The Ship" looked super-futuristic. I LOVED the whole "Apes" universe, and still do. Thank you for this!

I'm a witness to the ship being at that Kanab restaurant. I was about 13 and on a family trip to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We ate at the restaurant. I mentioned to my dad that the ship, which was part of the restaurant's signage and out in the parking lot, looked like TPOTA ship. We asked the waitress and she confirmed it. I walked over to it and pulled off a small piece of internal foam that was accessible through an opening. Unfortunately, this cherished souvenir was lost over time. Thanks for bringing back some great memories!

When I saw that they turned it into a hotel sign I just wanted to scream, It’s A Mad House!! A MAD HOUSE!!

A ship so easy to pilot even a Chimpanzee could do it. 😅

I still have a picture of this spaceship as the hotel sign. We were driving to Salt Lake City from phoenix in 1978 and going through Kanab I saw this upright on the side of the road. I stopped and took a picture of it.. I recognized it as the plant of the apes ship.. it was rather cool…

That was an amazing design of a prop that gave the first film’s opening sequence a sense of futuristic reality. Excellent research.

I always loved the Flying Sub....and the Seaview.

We need a model company to make a scale styrene kit of this iconic ship! Maybe 1/72 or 1/48 scale.

Now I have to watch PoTA again. Fun fact: the music in the scene where Taylor is being walked through the ape village was sampled by Snake River Conspiracy in the song Breed.

I'm absolutely obsessed with the 1968 planet of the apes masterpiece and I cannot thankyou enough for explaining the back story of the iccarus/liberty 1 👏 looking forward to part 2 to see what happened to the main deck and the hibernation chambers 👍 I really gravitate to films that have space travel like inter stellar etc i wish more similar movies were made 🙏

Another great video, as usual. Now, one of the things that has always bugged me about the PotA ship is that I couldn't square the size and details of the interior with the size of the ship. There's just no way that there was enough room for all they had PLUS engines/power system to propel it. The crash-landed version made more sense, given that we saw what would logically be a separate engine/fuel section.

As a boy seeing Planet for the first time on TV (early 70s?) I instantly fell in love with this ship. So sleek. So aggressively pointed ... like the Delta Dart fighter jet or the Valkyrie bomber... Another vehicle I fell in love with around that time was the flying sub from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. I'm so pleased to see here that both of these beautiful exercises in design were executed by the same man.

For those with a sharp eye, in 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Taylor's ship was indeed called "The Icarus". There was brief footage of Taylor and crew on the news broadcasting on a television in a background in one scene. Then on another scene later on in the movie, on the front page of the newspaper reporting on the deadly virus, below there was another Headline stating "SS Icarus went missing in deep space:" therefore connecting Rise to the original 5 movies. My theory, it was the original timeliness before Cornelius and Zira went back in time and changed history.

The ship reminds me of the real world XB-70 , my father was part of the Special Weapons Project and worked on the XB-70.

Great video as always Dan. An interesting fact about the filming for the first movie in relation to the scene where the escape hatch was blown. The pyrotechnics team overestimated the charge and it not only blew the hatch, it also popped the windows and one corrugated panel from the nose. You can see it happen in the film. One window was lost in Lake Powell, and had to be mocked up for the remaining scenes with a sheet of plywood painted black (also visible in some scenes). I think they had an anchor line problem there too?

Another riveting and well researched video on my favorite science fiction film spaceship! I always loved the way director Franklin Schaffner photographed the Icarus with the overhead shots and that one flash pan shot especially as the ship sinks. Exceptional video, Dan, loved every second of it! Hopefully one day you can fill us in on the whereabouts of the Valley Forge (“Silent Running”) and the Proteus (“Fantastic Voyage”).

Icarus is such an odd thing to name any flying vehicle. It's like naming a ship Titanic II. Liberty I is a much better name.

I watched this video last night. And watched it again. I’m literally bewildered. Do people not see a basic opportunity to make money???? They had the ONLY ship from a movie that…by that time in the 2010’s…is a worldwide known household name cult film…it falls over…and THEY SCRAP IT!!! What sort of monumental financial mental midget wouldn’t see that sitting in their front yard and think for even a second “You know…maybe we should pull that down, put a few bucks into cleaning it up and repainting it, and take it on tours to the conventions and make some money…” 😢

That ship crash landing sounds a lot like Jupiter 2 engines.

Always thought it looked like the front end of the Valkyrie jet Bomber , it was a real Cool design ..the Motel owner should have been Flogged an the Prop saved..Great vid Dan..

They underestimated the back pressure from the mortar that blew the hatch, and it also blew out both of the windows as seen at 5:37 in this video. They had to get replacements to continue shooting, but didn't re shoot that scene. The original windows are still at the bottom of lake Powell.

NOW you have to tell us what happened to the super cool full size submarine set/prop "Proteus" from the 1966 movie "Fantastic Voyage" starring Stephen Boyd, Raquel Welch and Donald Pleasence!!!! It was not only used for exterior filming but ALSO had a detailed interior built for filming too!!! The exterior was made to have removable sections to allow cameras into one side or the other. There were also very cool smaller sized scale submarine models built for various scenes in the movie. What happend to them? You got to do this one... By the way James Cameron was quoted as as saying he is doing a remake of this film and it is in the early stages of production now!!!! In his hands it has to be good. Mike in LA, Calif.

True story: around 1968 my dad and his friend were boating on lake Powell. The saw the spaceship in the water. They looked inside to see valves and pipes made to keep it afloat. So they boated over to shore and talked with the film crew who told them about the movie. None of the actors were present.

It's hard to believe what they did with the props back then. It would have been great to go and have a rummage through the stuff seeing that it was regarded as junk anyway. Some cracking pieces I think. Thank you Dan

What happened to the monolith in 2001?

Enjoyed the tale of this prop. I think in our current world of CGI movies that props now seem much more valuable than they did 50 years ago when creative carpenters, electricians and engineers were making sophisticated props all the time for movies and TV. In a world of NFTs we now want something tangible that we can touch like a movie prop.

The cameo appearance of the fourth astronaut, the doomed Lieutenant Stewart, remains a mystery of why she was even included in the storyline of, "The Planet of the Apes". It would have been simpler just to create a crew of three men to begin with. In any event, thinking about it further, it was for the best that Stewart died a quick, painless death from a stasis chamber malfunction rather than face the kind of brutal, violent death she would have met on the planet of the apes. She would have likely ended up as another taxidermy display.

Whoohoo!! New Dan on a Saturday, so I'm not wasting my work day watching awesome vids. ;P

I really liked the ship from the first Apes movie but when it was shortened for "Escape" it just didn't look right at all. It made no sense, as it was supposed to be big enough to contain 4 Cryopods as it was in the first film. Anyway, what a pity it was destroyed. It might have been saved from being a Hotel sign, like it was trying to hold on for last chance to be saved. At least the original plans still exist, so you never know..🤷🏼‍♂🤔

Back in the 70s, there were two Saturday morning shows on CBS. Space Academy, with Jonathan Harris. And Jason of Star Command with James Doohan. Maybe a future show on both these classics.

I loved those movies and Linda Harrison (Nova) was simply EXQUISITE!. In Junior High School a local theater ran a "Go Ape for a Day" promo showing all 5 movies. Being in Jr High, I couldn't go but a friend of mine cut school and went. Also there was a place called Sam's Town in Cameron Park Ca. with Arcades, Gift Shops, a Bar and more cool stuff on a BIG lot that featured the "Slave Wagon" from these movies. I used to have a picture of me as a kid sitting atop it.

About 25 years ago, I walked into a garage sale and there was this teared up box full of 60s 70s battleship models, with bits and pieces falling apart, a few planes, blue angels, etc., etc. and I saw this pointy recognizable iconic Icarus ship!

This is easily the best video regarding the “Icarus.” Those blueprints for the ballast system was eye opening. Always wondered how they kept that huge prop under control while it was half sunk in Lake Powell.

First time I saw this movie was on TBS. And I LOVED IT! Yelling the famous line "Get your stinking paws off me you #### dirty ape!" My pop would laugh every time I did. So of course, I had to do it again.
