My father Robert E. Schultz served on the Valley Forge in Korea, and I saw this film with him and he was so happy the spaceship had the name of his old ship… wish he was still alive with us, I would love to tell him that the film was filmed on CV-45, the USS Valley Forge. Thank you for the interesting look at this cool film.
Yes. Yes. Yes. My all time favorite. I am 63 yr thank you for this wonderful narrative I am one of those little robots caring for the plant life. I am still up there caring for life. 😭
I don't know what it is about your clips. But you are very easy to watch informative. And you do a great job in-depth. Being a big lost in space fan ever since I was a kid now at the age of 59 Still highly respect the show. It's great to see you. Bring it up from time to time and keep up the great work
I just bought the Arrow Video 4K box set of “Silent Running” and it looks and sounds terrific. Highly recommended for anyone who loves this film. Great extras too including an audio commentary from Douglas Trumbull and Bruce Dern. 👍
Douglas Trumbull didn't work on Battlestar Galactica. His brother Don did but Douglass did not. John Dykstra did the effects for that series (and the movie spin off). Dykstra was fresh off Star Wars and had created the effects house Apogee.
I haven't seen Silent Running in over 30 years, but golly, has your video made some of my synapses line up. I think it was Trumbull's extreme attention to detail is what makes this movie work, in spite of the implausibility of its premise. And Dern's brilliant performance as a (simultaneously) sympathetic character who also comes off as a bit deranged. IIRC, the ATV's were labeled "Cyclops". The elliptical pool table, with the single pocket at one of the foci of the ellipse, is a fascinating idea. And I think the unseen, but mentioned AA Space Freighters were Arcadia, Blue Ridge, and Mojave. I gotta watch this one again.
Huge influence for me. I vividly recall watching the TV movies and the series as a kid. I have copies of the scripts of the three movies... too bad that the last script was not actualized onscreen. And the missed OP for Kolchak's resurrection on the X-Files really sucked!
Couple of months ago I bought over 200 movie DVD's at an Estate Sale for 20 Bucks. As I Cataloged them into a Spreadsheet I found a DVD of a Movie I too had only seen once that I consider to be quite a good movie and have always wanted to see again with one of my all-time favorite Actors! It was Silent Running with Bruce Dern! WooHoo!!!
I remember vividly seeing this film in the university's theater at Florida Institute of Technology. It had to have been prior to June of 1974, which is when I left FIT permanently. The school couldn't have gotten first-run films, so this must have been a real flop. But FIT was (and is) a geek school, and we all loved it. The thing I like most about this video is the description of the model building, where stuff from other models is used to build what the filmmakers like. The first shot of the Valley Forge is IIRC a dolly shot where the camera is looking in through a window close up, then backs away gradually revealing this gigantic ship - along with the logos of all of the sponsors. It was very effective. The complexity of the model was amazing to me - better than 3001's Discovery. Great video.
Your coverage of many facts from "Silent Running" is very well done and accurate. The more recent photo of Cheryl Sparks is so wonderful to see. This film was very important at the time it was made, and with our current climate issues, is even more important today. As with others, this film makes me cry every time I see it. Joan Baez's two songs are heartbreakingly beautiful. Regarding the scene with Bruce Dern swimming in the water in the forest scene, located in the aircraft hangar - the water was very cold. The person who filled the water area neglected to turn on the hot water tap, and Mr. Dern had to feign a tropical environment while swimming in cold water. For those interested, the DVD of "Silent Running" is still available (Amazon for example) and the DVD has a fantastic Bonus section with a full documentary shot and narrated as "Silent Running" was being made. Thank you very much for bringing this to us. Best wishes.
Huey, Dewey, and Louie the robots. 1972 the year I graduated from high school and went into the US Army. I have this movie on DVD and watch it about once a year when something reminds me. I always wanted one of those 4 wheeled vehicles ....
