The Japanese green ranger was actually unaffiliated with that show's version of Rita and just had a personal beef with the red ranger. "Rita" was unable to get him to join her, so she used the sword spell to brainwash him
In Green with Evil Part 2, Finster says the Sword of Darkness could keep Tommy under Rita's spell forever. So it seems like the original spell was only temporary.
Just watched this ep. I would suspect that Rita doesn't have full access to the morphing grid and as such couldn't fully power the power coin/morpher. Using the power of the sword, Rita was able to overcome this issue. As such, when the sword was destroyed, the connection to the power grid was disconnected
I always figured the reason EGR Tommy was so damn powerful was because he was powered by both the Dragon Coin and Rita's magic, and that the sword was basically a power conduit that also kept Tommy under control. When he actually wields the sword, it's like a direct line between him and Rita, when he doesn't, she has to pop in periodically to work her magic.
The way I understand the sword of darkness is that it served as a focus and an additional source of power for the spell to keep Tommy under Rita's control. Every other time a ranger was under a spell the spell would only last so long and they could possibly fight it off examples being the spell placed on Billy to get the dragon dagger which wore of emediatly after he turned it over and the spell on Katherine that she fought off all together. So since Tommy got the sword the spells focus shifted to the sword and the swords power was keeping the spell going and when it was destroyed so was the spell.
the spell Rita used was a temporary spell the sword was supposed to turn Tommy evil for good but when the sword got broken the spell broke too. that the best explanation i can give you
You are appreciated, so whatever you do, DONT STOP THIS CHANNEL OR YOUR WORK!! Numbers will shoot back up, still a lot to look forward to with Power Rangers as a whole.. May the power protect you..
I also remember evil Tommy being able to shoot a green fireball w/the letter Z on it,as well as being able to reflect laser shots when shot at while playing his dragon dagger.though he only used these once
I always theorised that Rita used the sword of darkness as a way to enhance her own powers so she would be strong enough to corrupt Tommy, someone we know to be pure and good. Once the sword was destroyed I believe that Tommy's innate goodness reasserted itself and he was able to break free of what was left of Rita's spell.
Rita's spell required her to constantly supply her magic to the spell. The Sword of Darkness allowed her to keep her control on Tommy and to grow three monsters and block out the sun to destroy the Megazord. Basically she was limited in the amount of magic she could use at a given point in her attacks on Angel Grove.
Here's my theory. In most lore in shows or stories, no spell is eternal. They weaken over time unless there is something in place to keep it "charged". In my opinion, the spell was only temporary and it would eventually weaken( think back to Tommy staring at his fist like he was almost coming to his senses when fighting the putties in green with evil part 2) but the sword could be something like a talisman to keep the spell active and dominant over his mind and became the battery in a way for the spell. When the sword was destroyed, it's power source was shattered. Just a theory.
These videos are great, dude! Please keep them coming whenever you can! I just got my first complete Ranger costume (MMPR Green) a few months ago and diving into the lore and listening to the music gets me hyped up to wear it. Thanks for doing what you do!
The sword of darkness was definitely interesting, I know Drakkon has the means of using the spell (as seen when making ranger slayer), but I do think it would be interesting to see Tommy use it again, or see Drakkon use it with Saba.
I was told by JDF that in order to break Rita’s spell he had to be defeated in battle to the point where he was forced to dimorph. The sword had nothing to do with the spell.
Rita had tommy under her spell, but on her own the spell would wear off. The sword acted as a sort of way to further extend the spell, but once the sword was destroyed the spell wore off because it was not recast
Like others, my headcannon involved seeing the swords of darkness as somewhat of a power conduct for Rita's spell. Once it was destroyed, Tommy's nature wasn't as artificially swayed toward evil, and thus Rita's powers or rather the link to Tommy was broken. I also thought that the shock of losing the fight and having the sword destroyed acted like a kind of shock to break him free sooner than usual. This could also explain why it was called a "power sword". Maybe in that context, it wasn't THE power sword, but the power sword (of darkness) that was involved with those story arcs. I don't recall this being explained in screen either so again headcannon, but it seems to be a common theory that fans deduced and one that fits pretty well.
Rita spell by itself, was not enough to keep Tommy under her control indefinitely. I don’t think her magic was enough to completely turn somebody evil without a little help. It works for a short time, but it won’t take long for it to wear off. Especially with someone as strong willed as Tommy. This is where the sword of darkness comes in to play. It had the ability to augment Rita’s spell, making it last indefinitely, or at least, until the sword was destroyed.
intresting video. honestly, i would say it was just adapting something from the sentai to serve a purpose without giving it too much thought. The best in universe reason i could come up with that is by no means cannon or supported by anything in the show is {the sword of darkness was the physical manifestation of the spell Rita cast, or possibly an anchor and destroying it dissolved the spell.}
Awhile back I made my own rendition of the Sword of Darkness, to go with my cosplay of the Green Ranger had he'd appeared in the 2017 movie. I've worked on the cosplay some more since then, but here's alike to what it looked like.
The Sword of Darkness and Zach’s axe were my favorite MMPR weapons. When Tommy, and Goldar whooped up on the Megazord with that double-sword blast >>>> I don’t recall Jason ever using that move to remove the Sword of Darkness ever again.
In my own head-canon; The Sword of Darkness was used to reinforce Rita's control over Tommy, and given I view him as being strong of well, he was able to use the swords destruction as the entry to him breaking free of Rita's control. (Whom I assumed got arrogant and assumed the sword would just keep Tommy under control.)
I have an even better question: why haven't we gotten a collectible prop replica yet? This was one of the most badass weapons in the entire series (second only to the Dragon Dagger of course) and we still haven't been able to find out what it would be like to wield it ourselves.
Rita's spell on Tommy would weaken over time ( like it did with Kat) so the sword of darkness would keep Tommy under the spell forever as long as it wasn't destroyed
Thanks for all your hard work. I haven't been watching a lot of PR content either, not sure what happened there. I'll gladly be part of your 100 viewers if that's all you get
This is purely headcanon, but it could be that Rita used the Sword of Darkness as a medium to invoke the spell that let her brainwash him. Even if the SoD is not seen or mentioned when she takes control of his mind, it still was remotely invoked to enable the spell to take hold. Then giving Tommy the SoD strengthened its hold over him via proximity, and once it was destroyed, the spell invoking its power was undone.
I remember there being a comment by Finster the monster maker in Rita’s palace. If you give Tommy the sword of darkness it will make your spell over him permanent it will never be broken unless the sword is destroyed.
I would guess that Rita infused out with dark magic, giving out an immense evil aura. Not quite enough to make it sentient like Say Saba, but still enough to give it a powerful influence to the "dark side" as it were.
Tommy was placed under the spell by Rita, and later was given the sword of darkness to strengthen the spell and hold him under the spell forever. The downside was that if the sword was destroyed the spell would be broken. I've always thought the sword was broken way too easily for something so important.
If you read any of the novelizations it explains how the power coins were all the same side. Rita and zordon fought over them and in the end Rita won the green power. My understanding is she was never able to fully corrupt the power. It's possible that the power would revert on its own after a short while. Since she never actually created the coin and the power, she may have had limited control over it.
The Destruction of the Sword caused a giant pulse through the power which was enough to blow out the spell like how a lightning strike might blow a fuse. At least that's how i've always explained it
Cool News as brought to us by the Power Rangers Universe Comic #3. It WAS originally the sword of power, but when Nasty Knight presented it to Rita, she used her dark magic to corrupt it.
I'd like to know more about all the 1-off items that were used in the show but never mentioned again, lol. Like the 'blaster' they needed to destroy the super putties. Or the 'Sword of Power', not to be confused with the Power Sword that Jason uses, and so forth.
Also, I dunno what you mean about a 'lull' in content. Renegade Studios just released a tabletop MMPR book. It's not flawless, but it has a lot of info in it.
I heard somewhere that in the original script for “The Green Dream” (the episode the Sword of Power appeared in), it was said the Sword of Power was created using remnants from the Sword of Darkness. He should definitely do videos on that and the other one-shot items.
If I remember correctly in the episode that Tommy gets the sword from Rita there is a throw away line from Goldar that by giving him the sword her spell over him would become more powerful but then be linked to the sword. I could be wrong but I remember there was a line about giving him the sword and a link to the spell that was mind controlling him
it was during the green with evil mini series that ritas spell started to weaken thanks to kimberly but goldar was the one that told rita to give tommy the sword to cement the spell to keep him under her control but it was zordon that told the rangers to destroy the sword to break the spell
To be honest I wanted to comment in the batcave about this channel. To be honest I am a huge power rangers fan and I know most of the information covered but still the videos are very good and I always enjoy watching them.
I think maybe the spell on Tommy could be not permanent and be temporary, or not strong against someone like Tommy Like how Kat was able to break free from her spell because she has a lot of goodness in her and a good heart And the sword simply enhances the spell and makes sure Tommy stays complacent
You know, I have just come up with a theory about the Sword of Darkness returning in Mighty Morphin Mutants. As far as we know, it was originally used by Tommy when he was under Rita's spell. If for any reason Tommy would've tried to take the Sword of Darkness from the Green Mutant Ranger and use it for good instead of evil, Rita would've reempowered the sword to brainwash Tommy again. Then again, Rita wouldn't have wanted the sword to be destroyed again like it was the first time around. Since the Sword of Darkness originally belonged to Zordon, Tommy would've finally been able to reunite the sword with him after 10,000 years if Tommy didn't become evil again as a result of picking up the sword. In the best case scenario, Tommy, reunited with the Sword of Darkness, would be given ultimate power once again, but this time for good instead of evil.
I reckon Rita had the sword when she first cast the spell and the magic comes from the sword but she can't give it too him until she's is sure he's worthy because she can't risk losing the sword
To my best understanding, the Sword of Darkness acts as a means to strengthen Rita's spell over Tommy. I guess an example is Lord Drakkon's replication of Rita's spell over Kimberly the Ranger Slayer. When she was sent away through time, the distance weaken the hold Drakkon had over her mind. Which was eventually broken by a familiar presence, leading to her vowing vengeance. Without a tether it seems the spell will weaken over time and distance apart from the spellcaster. The Sword seems to work as an amplifier to Rita's hold over Tommy's will.
Honestly, it probably is just that the writers didn't know how to handle it like you said. They were still new to adapting Sentai content for Power Rangers and they were probably having one heck of a time resolving the fact that Tommy doesn't die like Burai in Zyuranger
You forgot to mention the ranger slayer in the boom studios comics. Because the bow of darkness looks very simillar to the sword of darkness. Kinda of like how the tyrannosauraus sentry's spear looks simillar to Jason's red ranger power sword.
in the sentai version destroying the sword actually ended up killing the green ranger if i remember correctly, and since they cannot kill in a 90s kids show they changed it to be without the sword rita's spell was weakened to the point tommy was given the free will to do with his powers what he pleased, lord drakkon anyone? rita always had the control over his power as seen when she brings out the candle later on that drained his powers every time he used them. in the end the power ranger story of the sword was used as a plot tool for tommy and his powers that was not as flushed out as it really should have been but that is just me lol. hope the new house is awesome and that unpacking wasn't too exhausting on you. i do enjoy the content when i see it.
You should talk about Power Rangers Ninja Storm! It’s almost 20 years… And I feel sometimes they don’t get enough love like the other seasons. I would love for you to do a comparison of this season; from MMPR, In Space, Time Force and Wild Force.
We also need to mention the V2 Green Ranger who has a newly restored SoD (yes, I'm aware you were just focusing specifically on the show). My theory is that the SoD wasn't actually an "Evil" weapon but just named that to sound cool. It's obviously an amplifier-based weapon. So, my personal theory is that Ninjor first restored the sword then reestablished a connection between it and the old GR Dragon coin (plugging the leak between the coin and grid).
It's an odd relic for Zordon to have, but since he's the representation of pure good, then it shouldn't affect him. The sword of Darkness must need a powerful spell cast on it by someone to control another person, with the sword being able to perpetuate the spell for as long as it is intact, or the being is alive, as it must link the evil of the spell caster to the evil of the wielder, which could explain why Zordon wasn't affected by it and was able to use it. But you know PR writers, they don't dive deep into the lore (they just created) or forget about something they wrote an episode ago. The writers are still a canonical and continuity nightmare sometimes.
I believe that a good explanation for why the sword breaks the spell. The spell would take power from Rita to keep it on him. Instead of draining her own power, she used a sword that has essentially unlimited power. And transferred the spell draining to it. Thus why it could keep him under the spell forever. That way Rita would be free to use her full power to give Goldar, Scorpina, Tommy and any other monster more power instead of just maintaining control over Tommy.
Maybe Rita imbued the sword with the same spell she cast on Tommy, thus linking them both. Why is why destroying the Sword of Darkness also destroyed Rita's hold on Tommy
Before he video starts... wasn't there 2 Swords of Darkness originally? I have vague memories of the original being destroyed, but a Clone of Oliver being equipt with a replica?
Maybe it had something to do with what Zordon said to Alpha 5 about the prophecy being fulfilled about the 6th ranger is officially one of them. Since it was known Rita acquired the green dragon power coin in her possession.
Well according to Finster in Part 2, Rita was supposed to give Tommy the sword of Darkness to not only strengthen him but keep him under control forever. So it seemed like her spell over Tommy was only temporary. But therein lied the only flaw to her plan. Tying the spell to the sword made it so the Rangers could win. Which I think sucked.
I'm sorry but this content is the shiznittlebamskitskitskidaddle. I'm 38 and grew up with this series. This show made me the ultra geek I proudly am today. I watched it well beyond what was "ok" to watch it. Your series brings and ticks that nostalgia bell hard. Keep doing what you are doing man!!!
MMPR's legacy stands the test of time to this day. My daughter watched samurai and thought it was hella cool. When I told her "wait till you see daddy's rangers". we then watched MMPR through In Space. She flipped. She literally asked me "why does my power rangers look so fake". I she'd one man tear that day
@@the6thranger Thank you man. I've never seen a more cohesive explanation of the rich lore that is the power ranger universe. Most people scoff that it's a kids show.. but to me and countless others this was and will be the first live action super hero content a generation was exposed to. And it deserves every bit of praise as the MCU or DCU
if you're struggling for content, what about covering something the toys/figures/ merchandise that has been coming out over the last couple of years? yes there's a lot of 'experienced' youtubers that have covered things like the Three-Zero power rangers releases but your audience are here for you, your fandom and your coverage. they'll support what ever you cover so long as its Power Rangers. food for thought.
Thanks! Yeah I've tried with merchandise and comic book content in the past, but it always gets about 25% of the normal views I get. Same with videos about any seasons other than MMPR, zeo and in space haha
These are my theories. Before Rita gave Green Ranger the Sword Of Darkness. She transferred the control spell to the sword, so she would no longer have to maintain it herself. Either that or, the Sword itself had the ability to keep such a spell locked in place all on its own. So it automatically became lock and key to Rita's spell that was controlling Tomy.
Hey there Sixth Ranger, thank you for this new video on The Sword of Darkness. I found this video to be very interesting and informational, just because I forgot a lot of the lore about the sword. Anyways, thanks again for this wonderful new video. I do look forward to seeing more videos from you soon. Hopefully, you can do a video review on the Power Rangers Universe comic book series or a video on either the Lost Galaxy Powers or Time Force Powers.
I believe I can help finsters said that the spell used to control Tommy was temporary and that by giving the Sword of darkness to Tommy it would basically continue the spell on indefinitely so basically the spell would get weaker and weaker unless let's say a new battery will split in think of it kind of like a remote or an electric toy that requires batteries
In the extended power rangers universe the sword of darkness was brought back when Tommy got his Green ranger armor upgraded sense technically The sword is part of the grid like his Dragon dagger so Technically Tommy only brought that sword out as a last resort because of what it is means and yes I believe Zordon would have explained this before his Scarifice.
I think rita Linked the green power coin to the sword so both the sword and coin were giving Tommy his powers. Since the coin originally belonged to zordon it was made from goodness, so the coin was the green ranger powers good half and the sword was the evil half. So when the sword was destroyed the evil power was destroyed leaving only the good power.
Most likely the sword of darkness was the initial source of magic that Rita used to fuel the spell she used to control Tommy before it was even given to him. Because Zordon was taken out for a while, she was likely counting on the fact that she would be the only one who knew the secret of the sword being connected to the spell from that point on. Thus she decided to give the sword to Tommy to boost his power, if it was taken from Zordon it was likely connected to the morphing grid and would be an ideal weapon to give to Tommy since he was outnumbered and because it could have been the only other weapon that was compatible with his ranger powers aside from the dragon dagger. Course there could be other factors as well like the spell wasn't actually on Tommy but on his power coin and the means in which she could control that coin and it's barer was the sword of darkness which she corrupted when it was taken from Zordon. But the point is the sword was already connected to the spell.
echoing others in remembering that the sword was to amplify the spell and become the spell's holder. belive there was a discussion between Rita and Goldar if she really wanted to transfer the spell.
I always thought that the original spell she cast would eventually wear off. He'd become the good Green Ranger. The sword was said to make him Rita's slave forever. Like the sword possessed its wielder and obeyed Rita. So Rita's spell could wear off but as long as Tommy had the sword he would be possessed by it. Or could be what they were going for and what they had. In Zyuranger Burai wasn't controlled by Bandora, he chose to be against Geki, the Red Zyuranger. The sword made him more evil and insane over time, eventually turning on Bandora. When it was destroyed, his senses returned to normal and he chose to help the team. His choice to be against them to begin with, sword made his mind worse, his choice to join when the sword was destroyed. So they had the footage of the ed ranger destroying thee sword and the green ranger quitting being evil. Though Power Rangers was aimed at a youner audience than Zyuranger. In Zyuranger the Green Candle was always there and it wasn't just Burai's power rant it was burning away, when it was burnt out completely, Burai would die. The way Tommy was, well, for the next five seasons, can imagine he needed to be under a spell to serve Rita. When the spell wore off he'd join the good guys, unless the spell couldn't wear off because of the sword. Rita's ability to possess a human seems limited. There was an episode where Billy became evil for a short time and stole the Dragon Dagger for her. Kat, for a while she was under Rita's spell but eventually chose to help the rangers. When she stole Kimberly's coin back from Rita it was seen as not in evil hands any more and Kimberly recovered. So could assume that a spell without the sword would have eventually seen it wearing off and Tommy choosing to join Jason. Although, they could have had his fight with the putties where he got the sword in the first part. Maybe a putty wielding it, he defeats it, takes the sword, uses it to fight the rest and gets possessed.
A shame the sword had to be destroyed (although I blame the Sentai footage and material for this). Really wished they could’ve purified it or found another way to break the spell. Don’t get me wrong the Dragon Dagger is cool, but the Sword was just more awesome looking and practical in combat. Plus using both was great. I get that in Zyuranger it was also destroyed and if they kept it around they would’ve had to film original footage but oh well. As for the slump in content lately, honestly I figured that’s something almost every PR RU-vidr has to deal with. I’m sorry to hear that but it’s just how it is with the current state of the franchise right now.
I always felt like tommy should’ve had amnesia after Jason destroyed the sword of darkness not remembering what happened to him or what he did then maybe gradually piece by piece flickers of what happened through episodes here & there
I give your interested in a little known fact about power rangers the Sparks that you see when the power rangers are struck or strike an enemy are done with thin magnesium strips embedded along the edges of the weapons and a green rough rough surface is added to the area that is being struck in order to produce the Sparks
You should cover more from Boom Studios, maybe cover issues or story arcs from issue 0 to present day. I think that would be amazing as the content from Boom is unbelievable amazing.
