I watched Kes when I was 11 or 12 and was obsessed. My brother had the falconry book by mh Woodford an I read it cover to cover and it sparked a lifelong love, I went on a weeks course at the British school of falconry as soon as I was old enough and learnt how to keep and train a hawk and have been lucky enough to make a career out of it for years after just flying raptors. Thank you so much for this video, fantastic stuff ❤

WOW! Love Kes. It's how things used to be. It reminds me of my own childhood. Then as an adult I was in a band that that played the old working mens clubs, full of smoke, bingo and friendly folk. I later took Kes to a younger generation when I taught secondary school children who were at risk of permanent exclusion, they watched with deep interest, asking many questions. The generation was different but they could see themselves in Billy. I also used to read The Nature of the beast by Janni Howker which had a film (film 4) and that was very similar to Kes. You've taken me back James, thank you, thoroughly enjoyed this.

KES' One of my favourite films. I used this movie to show my kids what it was like in schools in my days. I was bullied (think loads were) like Kes was and this shows the schools of those days and how they were run. They weren't happy days, but now looking back and they are??? (weird). So whenever I watch the film, it is always a blast from the past for me. It also reminds me of a teacher we had called Bomber Brown (well it was legal in those days LOL). So if somebody did something wrong, he would take them into the corridor, he would stand in the doorway so you could see him with his cane, the lad would be stood behind the wall and he would swipe his cane like he was caning the lad. The lad would walk in rubbing his hand and making moaning noises and go back to his desk. But I believe he didn't cane anybody and just went through the actions, then told the person to look like they had been caned. And that poor small lad in the grey jumper you are showing getting caned from the Headmaster, and if you watch the film, you would see he was only there to deliver a message from a teacher. I felt really sorry for that lad. As I said. Happy Days.

Hi James - good bit of background in & around Barnsley. Pubs are closing ( on the South Coast ) all over the place these days. You opened my eyes telling the cost of a pint on your travels & I remember thinking no wonder Pubs are disappearing. The film Kes, I recall well. I thought it was a bit raw at the time and I still do. That youngster had it hard; good job he was a little hard nut. I like the Yorkshire folk coming through on your video, very approachable & friendly. Well done again. 💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕

Enjoyed this trip down memory lane and especially with you adding the film scenes in. Totally agree that Kes was a fantastic film and I remember those times! Another excellent (of its time) and shocking (todays standard) film is Rita, Sue and Bob too - am sure there are a few locations to visit. Also an excuse to watch the film again - which would never be allowed to be filmed today. Andrew Dunbar was a genius of a writer! You can visit Sheffield and do "The Full Monty" before heading up to Bradford! You could become a mobile Barry Norman/Roger Cooke reporting on UK films and behind their scenes with a side of food reviews enroute!

Kes was the first book I got out of the local library under my own steam when I was about 11 years old. I revisited that local library during last summer and was surprised that it had been closed and turned into some kind of 'community centre'. Local public libraries started closing before the local pubs. So now the council estate I grew up on has neither a pub nor a library.

Great idea for a series, there a plenty of Yorkshire films and locations to keep you going. I've been to Hoyland quite a few times over the past couple of years and didn't know one of the best British films ever was filmed there (or maybe I forgot 😂) or I would have to go on adventure as well. Great Vlog James - I saw Kes when I was about 11 and it had a profound affect on me. Never forgot the awful tragedy of it and though I was in Birmingham not Barnsley it spoke to me about the stunted and wasted lives of the working classes (of which I am one). It did make me want to be better though and live a larger life and I managed to do that.

Really enjoy your videos James, you do make me smile :) your humour is just typical and remind me so much of my brother in is approach to life. If you fancy a trip out to Upton not far from Gainsborough to a wonderful little fish and chip shop (its only open Friday tea and Saturday afternoons) but it is famous for being only one of a handful of fish and chip shops that still cook on a coal fired range and use beef dripping ! Trust me they queue up and I can honestly say they are wonderful and I can recommend a pub in the next village (Willingham By Stow) called the Half Moon Inn where the locals are very friendly and make you feel so welcome. (we have stayed at the small campsite behind the pub several times (Ashleigh Farm) its one of our go to places which is less than an hour from home but we love it. Looking forward to your next adventures
