In the first season the case matters. That's the difference. The case is deeply interwoven into the detective's personalities and worldviews. Throughout most of the first season the detectives are either dealing with or talking about the case and that shows the impact it has on them. In Night Country the case is just there as a backdrop for character studies. You could take the plot out of Night Country and replace it with any other true crime plot and the character arcs could remain exactly the same.

Season 4 tried to tell too many character's stories. it was more like a soap opera than a murder mystery/police procedural. Then it teased an answer to the "spiral" symbol and then just brush it to the side with no explanation.
@david-2
@david-2 3 месяца назад
I don't agree with your analysis. It's not that we didn't grow with the characters in season 4; they simply had no redeeming features, not even at the end. Season 4 strays so far from the path outlined in the first that it's no longer "True Detective". That is doubly true in that it wasn't even conceived as a season of the show - that was an afterthought, a marketing gimmick. The story and characters were full of bile, and it was a thoroughly unpleasant watch. My prediction: season 5 will be a dumpster fire too.

I think the mythology was much more compelling in season one. The writer took mythologies from horror writers of the 19th century and made the fictions seem real enough that you'd want to look up the yellow king or carcosa, etc in Wikipedia to see if the cult really exists. In season four, the spiral symbol ended up being a practical warning about thin ice! The mythology and spirituality was deftly woven in all through season one.

I believe this is a case of success hampering the later seasons; the first season had a good concept that gave a lot of ground to explore and tell a story. The late seasons were doomed to follow formula in order to replicate it. The only way to bring it back to form is to scrap everything and instead focus on how narrative can be twisted to create interest.

your assessment is pretty accurate i think they should have just ended it at season 1 as well, or left a lot more time for something to cook for another season. the anthology strategy was definitely the best way forward for that but it was a complete fumble. season one just felt bigger than the screen. they told just enough, had the right balance of plot and subplot, and kept the preaching to a minimum. i wouldn't even call the new seasons any more "woke" than the first one i just think they were inorganically trying to subvert expectations and artificially create complexity with fifty subplots. season one left a lot to the imagination, it was clean. i cant even remember season 3 honestly. two had some interesting things, some david lynch-esque moments, but i still have no idea what the plot actually was. and i think im going to skip 4.

I don't agree with the reasoning. The comments you make here, can be applied to all seasons. The reason we don't care, is because the scrips it badly written, not because someone might not be likeable (like Danvers). Some ppl are not likeable, and thats fine having such characters in a show. I think that, firstly, S01 was something a bit new; the style, the setting, the macabreness and the actors were right for the job. A one-hit-wonder, like someone said. Its hard to replicate novelty. But, s04 main problem is the fact that they are shoving "The Message!" down the viewers throats in such an insulting manner, that you instantly feel that you are being lectured: - All leads are females, who basically are men in female bodies - They talk and act like men, "fuck this", "fuck you", "fuck it", "wanna fuck?" - The males are all wimps, in bathtubs who are waiting for the leads fo show up and say "wanna fuck?" Such females exist, but here, it is ûberclear that the director really wants to show of "strong females", but by doing it the way that Disney and Marvel are doing it: by making females into males. And it simply does not work. On top of that, the script gets sloppier as the episodes go. Danvers, not reallt taking orders or shit from anyone, changes on a dime just to get some artiifical drama into the scene, and just gives up, seemingly based on nothing more than a telling off by a guy she doesnt reallty listened to anyways.

Season 1 was a masterpiece. Season 2 was still good, but dragged. Season 3 was a return to form, mostly. Season 4 might as well not exist - it sucked so bad - they should just renamed it to something other than TD, it does not deserve to be in this anthology it's that bad; side note - it is the worst season of any show I've ever seen, copying the main aspect from S1 and doing NOTHING with it.

Season 3 was a huge disappointment. It was such a tease, working so hard to create intrigue, introducing concepts outlined in the first, building up toward something greater, only to find out every single thing they so arduously worked to convince you was a part of the evil of season one was actually just a misunderstanding. The hundreds-upon-hundreds of pieces of evidence pointing to this very specific outcome was actually all an incredibly intricate and unrealistic coincidence (which is ironic, as it seemed maybe they were going for a "wELl it ithEy DOn't aLwAys fiGUrE it OuT iN rEal LifE" kind of thing). Every detective was wrong, no one was even close to the truth. It was almost as if everything in the first season didn't actually occur, and the television interview story-line led to nothing, Marty and Cohl's work unredeemed, abandoned, become a figment. It was all rushed to conclude to nothing at the end. The acting was great, the characters were interesting, if not more realistic than the first, but it was so poorly executed. The Vietnam hallucinations were corny, the

Just to add - it's like when they discover the (spoilers) bank safe-doored, underground child prison room in the destroyed remains of a mansion owned by an extremely powerful family (which begs the question - why didn't they clear the room out after the mansion burned down?), a-la Epstein. Then when (spoilers) the father finds it earlier on, he's killed and his death is made to look like a suicide. Why was this family killing witnesses, bribing officials, spending tens of thousands on a secret underground bunker, etc. to protect something so (relatively) banal as a bad inter-family quarrel (a bit of an understatement, but still infinitely less malevolent than the alternative the show was strongly implying for 95% of its runtime). Then you begin to realize that none of the character's motivations make much sense. The ending was so insulting.

Nic Pizzolatto is a hack. Season 1 was only good because of cast and more importantly the director Cary Joji Fukunaga ( dude directed the whole season by himself ). Him and Pizzolatto clashed a lot on set, because Fukunaga keep changing the script/lines because it didn't work. In the end the show was a hit. Season 2 Fukunaga said "fuck im not working with this hack again" and the studio gave Pizzolatto full control with tons of random directors and well it's a complete incoherent shitshow.

I'd still take season 2 over Night Country any day. That at least still felt like True Detective. Without Niv Pizzolatto, theres no semblance of what made the first season great. In fact the new writer didn't even make Night Country for True Detective. It was shoe horned into a TD season by HBO.

I was at HBO during the making of Season 1 & 2 - and there's a bit more to it than what you suggest (although I think you aren't wrong on all of it). When Season 1 was getting greenlit, I read the Pilot script & it was one of the best I'd ever read (and I worked on the Wire, Sopranos, Deadwood Carnivale & more) - I was hooked & wanted more. So Nic wasn't "a hack" IMHO, but he did have a long time to write season 1 - years. And the Development team at HBO was superb at bringing projects along & helping the creator(s) hone the project. But there was a lot of turmoil & many talented execs got cleared out - leaving a lawyer in the Top slot and Nic wasn't given enough time or enough guidance, to bring in a successful season 2. HBO had a surprise success on their hands & wanted more, fast. So season 2 has too many main characters (4) & too many storylines, none allowed to be developed sufficiently - it's a mess. Season 3 was better, but for me, the terrible ending of "oh, it was all just a mistake! Nothing terrible really happened" was a real letdown, despite terrific acting. I do agree that Cary Fukunaga was a big part of why Season 1 was so good - HBO reverted to industry norm by season 2, having a series of episodic directors, and I think that was an element of what was different. But you can't pin season 4 on Nic, he was paid as an EP and had little if any input - so writers, directors and showrunners are perfectly able to deliver crap without him.
