What happened to Vlogging? Do people still Vlog? Do people still watch Vlogs? I found myself asking these questions and looking at why it might have felt like the world of vlogging faded away when I stopped doing it.

NOTIFICATION SQUADDDD!! 🙋🏻‍♀️ still vlogging and honestly I think it’s the reason why I’m still uploading once a week after 4 years. It’s fun to make videos. I definitely get a mix of emotions when I’m about to upload, nervous, anxiety, excitement, depends on the video. LOVING this format from you, all the yes to more vlogs!!

Ohhh heck yes we want more vlogs! I actually filmed a vlog last week and it felt so good to do something different again. I completely relate to what you're saying. I like making the videos that I'm making, but lately I feel relieved when I get the video done in time and out. But then we start all over again 😂 so again, yes to vlogs! Honestly I get stoked when I upload a vlog, and I definitely feel a sense of accomplishment and excitement for people to see, whereas with gear videos I get a little more nervous about people being nitpicky. Vlogs still feel like a passion project to me after upload hundreds upon hundreds of them haha. I dig the video mate!
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 года назад
Thats interesting! I almost feel the opposite! Because I'm in the "filmmaking" youtube space, I feel like people expect a lot out of vlogs, and I have seen and made some bad ones. So I think I worry more about that. Whereas my more technical based videos I feel like I have more control over.
@wesley8135

With daily vlogs you start to tailor your day and experience around making the content and less on the moment. I find that the most compelling ones are when the vlogger genuinely wants to do something, and the camera is just a tag-along not the other way around
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 года назад
I hear that. I went daily on instagram for a month once and made little mini vlogs and I definitely woke up thinking "what am I going to do today that's vlog worthy". I think the really great ones are the ones who can plan something vlog worthy, but it feels natural.

Yes!! More vlogs!! I feel like a lot of people got away from it purely because it doesn't make immediate "business sense." A lot of creators see much lower view counts from their vlogs vs their other content like tutorials and reviews, and then think that people don't want to see vlogs. In reality, vlogs are what get people attached to your life and journey. Those viewers end up being the most loyal and are the ones who matter the MOST.
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 года назад
I totally hear that. Its hard not to follow the numbers. You see something do well, it feels good, so you repeat that. And the other stuff gets left behind. But there is value in building a connection with your audience beyond just views as well.

YUS!! I've missed the vlogs. I'm experiencing the opposite of the consensus effect. 98% of my friends don't care about photography. They think I'm a bit too obsessed with it, but support me none the less. In saying that, it feels like there's no photography scene on the westcoast, even though we host a huge month long photo festival every year.

I still love vlogs (watching and making!) id be so happy to see more of yours coming back! I love how you said it’s a mix of reality show/real life because I feel so many vloggers in my niche (mom vlogging) do not have that style and that’s exactly the way I wanted mine to feel. Also, relief is the best way to describe an upload (it can still be positive but always so happy to move onto the next one)

Family vlogging is huge actually. Family's love watching other families. Going from a film making focused channel to a family focused channel, I've had to re-learn what the parenting/family audience is drawn to since it is much different than the filmmaking community. I've found that they care more about real, authentic content and not cinematic b roll and shallow depth of field. Those can help in small bite size amounts.
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 года назад
Thats great to know! I'm definitely not trying to say that it doesn't exist or that it's not important. More trying to comment on how it "feels" like it disappears when you're not a part of it.

Family vlogging is super fun. I think it's the easiest type of vlogging to do consistently without worrying too much about not having an audience or asking yourself: why are you doing this? It holds value to you and your family if nothing else. It's fun connecting with other families when it happens too.
@FamilyonStandby

More vlogs, please!! I've been vlogging about knitting and sewing for several years and lately, I've been trying to break free from the "talking head" formula. I love learning from other vloggers' shooting/editing styles. You and other vloggers are such an inspiration! And I agree with Becki & Chris ... it definitely depends on the video but, for the most part, there's nothing more satisfying than hitting that "publish" button. And as someone who constantly has the urge to create, it also gives me a sense of accomplishment like, "Hey! I made a thing today!" Gold star! 🌟😄 Thanks for another awesome vid, Dunna!

This is sooo juicy and interesting.. I’ve also been feeling that vlogging is dying but perhaps it’s just MY algorithm. It definitely lends to the false consensus effect.. Good Googling Dunna! I also think the algorithm killed the vlogger in that it rewarded everybody for making the occasional how to, or camera reviews, so it seems many vloggers switched to that.. I know I did! But I miss vlogging too.. I watch my own vlogs late night and just LOVE reliving those experiences. I think 2015/ 2016 was definitely the golden era of vlogging.. I’m glad you will get back into it!

Great video. I think it's super important to go out of your way to expand beyond the algorithm. Don't rely on it. Actively push outside those boundaries and explore other facets. If you shoot Sony, then search for Canon and Nikon shooters to see their perspective. Same goes for NLEs, photo editing, vloggers, computers, etc. The broader your world, the more open to change you'll be.

I like vlogs. I find them enjoyable the same way I enjoy the creative section of twitch. I get a peak into someone else experiences, often discovering new concepts, points of view that challenge mine, and explore new hobbies. It's how I discovered a lot of my hobbies like prop making, sculpting and cosplaying. Within the last year it's gotten me into to camera stuff and making youtube videos. Over the past two months it's gotten me into van life, mountain biking, and single track. Vlogs encourage exploration and discovery, both for the vlogger and the audience.

What you are describing about false consensus is similar to cognitive bias. Where an individuals create their own "subjective reality" from their perception. A great book that dives into cognitive bias is Thinking Fast and Slow which is based on the work of Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman. Great video. Thanks for sharing. More vlogs are good!

The algorithm killed youtube, not only as a creator I hate this feeling of relieve (in my opinion deadlines and creativity should not be mixed), but as a consumer I get so much useless cr*p in my feed it's crazy, I watch one star wars theory video and the next day my entire feed is star wars theories...uhm hello youtube you are not netflix I ain't binge watching every single thing I typed in the search box... this also kicks my creativity in to a halt, before I used to get inspired by Casey or Peter and I was like Oh I am gonan go and make a video on this and that and now I barely go on to youtube cuz the algorithm just promotes the most commercial friendly thing out there based on a random search term I used once... thanks for still making interesting videos ;) I am happy this one found it's way to my feed

As a fellow Cody & Casey subscriber, heck even the Becky & Chris and PM Vlogs, as a viewer it just feels like a break from the RU-vid algorithm monster in a way? Like to go with the consensus effect, I believe that the past two years has been all gear, all tutorials, do this and this AND this, in our sub boxes! Am I grateful?! Yeah cause that info was valuable! But Vlogs just, they make you feel and sometimes even think stuff through especially during problems while filming! But those are my thoughts!

I definitely agree with you about the false consensus effect. However, as a RU-vidr and a content consumer. I’ve noticed more people talk about vlogging / how-to rather than actually vlogging for good ol storytelling. Moreover, a good example of sprinkling in vlogs with your current content is how Matti Haapoja does it. Little bit of vlogging and having a topic at hand in regards to tech or whatever it may be! - Just my thoughts and observations
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 года назад
I agree... I think that comes down to the fact that people started to get dopamine hits when they found out they could get more views by doing instructional videos rather than vlogs. I think I might be a walking false consensus bias haha, I always have these HUGE ideas/dreams and think there is a MASSIVE market for everything. In my opinion current social platforms use false consensus bias as their algorithms --for a lack of a better explanation, to recommend things "inside your box". Constantly showing similar videos, photos, products, etc. I feel you really need to delve into more than your own interests. For example, I had no real understanding about the surfing community until a friend of mine invited me to a viewing of a film by Chris Burkard (Under an Artic Sky). Also are we not all insane? Who sets the baseline for normality in order classify the insane? 🙃 P.s sorry for the long winded comment, this video really got me thinking on more than just my creative front. 🙏
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 года назад
I totally agree, I think the algorithm is designed to feed our own biases. Which has pros and cons. The pro is that its easy to find stuff you'll enjoy... the con is that you think thats all there is.

I'm gonna answer these out of order, because I'm just an out of order kind of guy. Vlogging is 100% still a thing. A lot of the vloggers I used to watch all the time have somewhat moved away from vlogging (with the notable exception of Becki and Chris), but there's a whole new generation of vloggers out there who are just getting into the whole RU-vid thing. It's like the gateway drug into filmmaking (or at least filmmaking tutorials and gear reviews 😂) I felt the same way about both skateboarding and vlogging when I moved away from them. I'm a little obsessed with psychology, and the FCE has always been something that has intrigued me. It's like when you buy a new car, and all of a sudden it seems like everywhere you look you see that car. Make more vlogs. In the meantime, I'm gonna go binge all your old ones. K bye.

To be honest, I have review gear piling up in my office right now so I don't think it's a lack of camera stuff haha. Lots to talk about, but it kinda starts to feel monotonous if you don't break it up every once in a while. But you're right about the big ones (cameras specifically) I think we're going to see a couple big announcements here soon and then it will be quiet for a while.

But what I realize is whenever I post vlog just watching around 300-500 and whenever I post something about Ireland like niche (but I still don't have a niche) is watching more than 1k. What I try to say is I think if I want to make money I have to follow what ai says (or youtube analytics or search bar) then I can make more vlog after a certain subscriber number like 100k. Some wonderful food for thought here! It’s interesting….I have kind of the opposite feeling consensus bias-wise….I say to myself “why would anyone be interested in what happens in MY life”…..BUT….I have spent my entire career in the most glamorous industry…25 Years in Management at a Major Hollywood Film Studio, long experience in the Music industry, technologies, I live in Hollywood, I’m around stuff every day that excite a lot of people…and yet I have struggled to find a REASON to start a Vlog….I just don’t know how interested people would be….But then I see people who have vlogs with hundreds of thousands of subscribers and their vlogs are kind of about….nothing. And I find myself watching these vlogs. A few stand out, that keep me coming back (like yours)…..It’s an interesting question….but to answer your query, I WOULD like to see more of your personal vlogs….you’re an interesting guy…I’d love to see what your “everyday” is like…I know you’re a recording engineer….I’d like to see more of what that looks like in your world….

I think it's more the Ecosystem that you divulge yourself into. So vlogging, Skateboarding, or Anything that is a Genre of sorts. It's like buying and using an Apple Phone, then suddenly everything you see is "Apple" products pushing you further and further into their ecosystem. All kinds of things can do this including vlogging, you start doing it and suddenly you notice more and more vloggers. I always see this when buying a car, you never see a car or pay attention to a specific type of car till you buy one. Then they are suddenly everywhere, cause now you are paying attention to them more.
@dunnadidit
@dunnadidit 4 года назад
For sure! That car thing is actually a completely different (but obviously related) effect called Baader-Meinhof phenomenon or frequency illusion. It has a bit less to do with our choices and beliefs and assuming what others think like the false consensus effect does. But just like you mentioned, it has more to do with just paying more attention to something specific. I'm sure the two things work in tandem.

A lot of people have realised by now that their lives aren’t all that interesting. Of course certain people can pull it off, especially if they have a lot of money, live in exciting places or if they travel a lot. People who just live everyday normal lives though? A couple of years ago we considered relocating to a town in the sticks somewhere and I searched RU-vid to see whether it was worth it. I found a family vlog from there and it was the main reason why we decided to stay as far away from that place as possible! Oh boy, if people think a trip to do the recycling is worthy vlog material, I’m pretty sure there is just nothing else to do there! And of course the main problem is that RU-vid favours searchable content and vlogs are usually not searchable unless it’s some sort of crossover style. I do a lot of that now myself. I mainly make point of view photography videos that often come in vlog form. It’s not exactly what I had planned to be making for RU-vid - I wanted to make studio vlogs which are far less searchable. It’s working great for me though and it’s fairly close to what I wanted to do, so I’m fine with the compromise! If vlogs make you more excited about the content, why not try to make the searchable content in a vlog style? People still enjoy watching vlogs!

I'll be honest, I haven't watched as many vlogs as I used to in say 2015-2018. I'm also not seeing as many vlogs in my subscription feed. I still create vlogs primarily, but I need to have a reason. Hiking, for example, or doing something interesting. I'm no longer that interested in just vlogging a typical day or something like that. I haven't heard of the false consensus effect before, but I've definitely experienced it. I think I'm in the same boat with the vlog recommendations. I don't watch as many, although I want to, and RU-vid thinks I've lost interest.

RU-vid definitely goes through trends, the first trends I noticed started with skits from people like Lisa Nova and dave days and comedic videos, parkour/ninja and then dance videos like the evolution of dance and raving became a thing... then music covers became a huge trend. Esmee Denters was the first youtuber signed by a celeb/record label (Justin Timberlake) then Justin Bieber blew up and got signed as well but from Usher... then personalities popped up more again.. so people like Shane Dawson and Jenna marbles were doing skits and gained a decent following, then these RU-vidrs who were fans of each other started collaborating, and THEN came the challenge trends which gave them all EASY views but some were ICONIC like the ones from Glozel and I think as RU-vidrs starting hanging out, THAT is when vlogging become a huge trend,. then gaming became a trend (pewdiepie) was born. Then prank videos were the hot trend... crazy Food videos, then content houses... now there's just so many niche's old vloggers fell into... so, Vlogging isn't as big as it used at the moment to be because first of all, the viral videos on youtube trending list became pay to go viral... basically using money to make their channels interesting (think... Mr beast, picking up gold diggers etc) and second of all... most of the top Vlogging channels just stopped or upload less. David Dobrick, Shane Dawson, Casey, etc. Now the hot trend is podcasting. Everything is a trend on youtube.

I understand that based on algorithm economics it is definitely more lucrative to do tutorials, but these days I find myself watching less RU-vid because everyone I follow is talking basically about the same thing. The latest tech, camera tech, audio Tech...etc. As someone who enjoys the process of editing and filming, I miss seeing the creativity that went into vlogs. However, I understand how important it is for creators to not be placed into boxes and branch out. I selfishly miss them though.
