What Happened to W.I.T.C.H. 

Shows like Witch, Sailor Moon, Winx Club, and Shugo Chara totally made me think that I had powers hidden deep inside me

My opinion, Netflix should have revamped Witch instead of Winx Club. Then the dark theme would make sense as the style.

I just like how this show from the 2000 has a better female protagonist representation than most modern attempts at doing that.

As a European I see nothing wrong with the pages. That's just how we are learned to read it.

This was the series we, boys, watched in secret, and spoke about, together, in secret too. I loved WITCH, and I still like it today.

It always bummed me out that W.I.T.C.H. never got a third season. You could tell they were foreshadowing it, with the introduction of a mysterious, inexpicable new character in the S2 finale.

Also, Cornelia and Irma's bickering is iconic. And so true. Like you can be best friends and still get on each other's nerves sometimes. However, in one of the last ever issues it kind of gets 'resolved' and it's just the most heartwarming and wholesome and beautiful thing ever.

I really loved watching Witch when I was younger. Makes me wish it wasn't cancelled. I just hope that Disney would publish the rest of the comic book series.

I remember collecting the magazines of WITCH when I was 11-12, I actually saved my allowance so that I could buy the issues every month. It's a pretty popular magazine here in the Philippines during the early 2000s. :)

It's the shame there's no third Season of W.I.T.C.H. because back in Season 2 in "U is for Undivided" we learn why Hay Lin and Cornelia were chosen to be guardian of Air and Earth by the oracle but never explained by Will, Irma and Taranee why their choesn to be guardians exccept for a hint for the next Season which never happened.

Big props for making a vid about this series. It's extremely underrated and barely anyone I know has heard of the show.

Dude they are more stories that haven't been relished outside of europe. At one point the girls get more powerfull, they get extra weapons(not what you think) and open a school to teach magic to magical people like them

The graphic novel started with a dark and bleaker tone than the rest of the series, setting up existentialist crisis, passing of a family member, fear for the future after moving to another city, etc. Heck, there was even one chapter where Will makes clones of all of them to investigate Meridian, but she can't make one of herself properly because she's afraid she'll take her place like she saw Taranee's taking hers! Then Disney decided to move the creator of series to another country for a different project and threw in a bunch of writers and illustrators who didn't really coordinate well with one another and ended up creating a whole mess! Elyon went from being subservient to Phobos and actively taking part in his plans, trying to convince the girls to take her side, acting like the victim when they defend themselves from Vathek, helped kidnap and torture Taranee and fled after things got bad for her. Then the substitute writers did a 180º, dropped out of nowhere that Elyon was the "Light of Meridian" and transformed her into an innocent child being kept from the truth, invented a guy that was destined to be Cornelia's boyfriend for the sake of a cheap drama after he just stood in front of Phobos and let himself get struck by his magic (seriously, he knew Phobos was way out of his league at that point, he was the one who said it to the girls), and suddenly the goal had been shifted from closing the portals to freeing Meridian from the usurper ruler! Then they got out of ideas pretty quickly and abandoned the magical setting for the best written chapters, kept recycling the same plot points, the elements had to test them every other Tuesday, Caleb was written out of the story by breaking up with Cornelia because he saw her base form, the art kept shifting constantly between arcs or even chapters back to back in some cases, each girl was given a story with a different boy multiple times (especially Irma, who kept revealing her use of magic), among various other problems. The worst chapter was the one with the obligatory environmental message, which was outright insulting to the audience! Thankfully the animated series was much better! Instead of following the graphic novel, they decided on a single goalpost and threaded the plot carefully to not deviate from it, took inspiration from the most creative concepts and took them to a direction that made sense for what had been established before and did a good job at pacing the series. It's a shame that Disney was an ass to the creator and removed her from the series. I don't know what her plan was for the series, but from the very beginning it was clear she wasn't going to for the bubbly happy ending that we got after Ch7.

The thing with the panel reading: Some people just actually do read like this. I usually read from left to right in anything (which makes reading manga instead of comics pretty uncomfortable for me because you start at the back and read the right side first) so I do understand why the panels are set like this.

I LOVED W.I.T.C.H growing up. Disney really hit that pre-teen worldwide demographic thing well.

The show is legit underrated.

W.i.t.c.h, winx club, tokyo mew mew, sailor moon. They all gave me the best childhood ever! Thank you for making me think I was magical! All my leaf and berry potions did something, believing I could talk to nature, control the wind and shoot fire out my hands. Thank you! I hope my daughter might watch these and I can see the magic live through her now 💖

Let's not forget that the movie "The incredibles" was made in 2004 and then in 2018 they made "The incredibles 2". So after 14 years they made the second film. Maybe if the directors want they can produce W.I.T.C.H again😍

Witch was actually a thing all the girls in my country were crazy about. And it was never the graphic novels - those came later as a compilation of comic books (at least for us) - it was the magazines. Each volume also came with a small toy, jewellery or other trinket. But the magazines themselves looked very different from what you can see in the French version - less pages, less photos, more Witch content and drawings, definitely no comics for another series. I collected Witch magazines from different (European) countries and the differences are huge. There were also novels (which all of us read) and advice books. And thousands and thousands of different Witch-related media. At peak popularity there were yearly official Witch conventions where you could get autographs from artists etc. Witch was huge and very important for a lot of girls - at least when I was growing up.

The fact that W.I.T.C.H. ended after 2 seasons while Winx Club is STILL GOING ON, is a crime of the highest level. Like seriously, one's an action packed, complex, fantasy adventure with slice of life elements.....and the other is a glorified toy commerical for discount barbie dolls.

I'm Italian and still cannot believe that I did not know this show was Italian! I guess the early 2000s were the golden era of Italy. Kind of sad that the big animation productions slowly vanished away.

In Germany we only got the comics as magazines and later as books (when I say later, I mean YEARS later).

When I met Jason Marsden, who voiced Matt, I mentioned this show, which in turn gave me points for distinction so I'm awfully glad I found this show on RU-vid 3 years ago--it helps to mention an actor's underrated project they worked on decades ago--it'd be like meeting Ian McKellen and saying "I loved your performance as Martin Luther".

I love how it's immediately telling, that the show was made in the early/mid 2000s just by hearing the theme song. 😁

Witch should get a Netflix live adaptation instead of Winx. It has way more potential.

the magasine was huge in Lithuania and there was so much merch and everyone collected all issues and it was all insanely overpriced and everyone had them all :D there were backpacks, beach towels, umbrellas, so much merch.

never watched the show, but the comics were honestly super good? Even for adults, damn. Sure it had its flaws but, in general, the character development and plot were so good

I'm British-Italian and when I was little and visiting my family in Italy my grandma bought me witch magazines!! And then I noticed it was on TV ALL THE TIME! Haha, I had no idea it was supposed to be this big in other places 😄

Yes, there is more WITCH, there's a lot more WITCH.... I'm from Portugal, here the magazine started in 2003 and run up until the end of 2007. Then it just ended abruptly, with no explanation, in the middle of a f*cking story arc!! Their "new powers" arc was just starting, there were some shocking revelations about Caleb and then boom, no more magazine >.< I only found out a few years ago that the original comic only ended in 2012 T_T Taranee remains to this day one of my biggest childhood icons

Thanks to you, I found out that W.I.T.C.H. graphic novels exist (I thought you could only read the comics in magazines), and they were recently reprinted, and they are available in my country, so now I think I'm gonna start ordering them. So I wanted to say, THANK YOU AND I LOVE YOU!!!!!

The "wrong" reading order is how I would read it, it doesn't seem logical to me to jump to the panel below instead of the one next to it.

I loved WITCH. I think I found it at the perfect age, and I adored the art style of the comic. As a middle schooler, the girls and their issues were all very relateable, as you said.

I'm Dutch, I remember how obsessed me and my sister were over the graphic novels. We found the cartoon awful at first. Because it was different from the graphic novels. The characters were for flat and stereotypical. That green thing was super annoying! And they Irma's clothes were in the wrong colour! I guess I missed all the interpersonal interaction and drama in the cartoon.

I watched this and winx when I was like 8 and only about 10 minutes ago realised they were different shows 🤦‍♀️

I'm french, and I grew up with witch magazines ( all of my teenagers years... so nostalgic ). And, yes, Witch did continue a lot. Actually, this is like really far from all the things with Kandrakar. Here, the bus is a school, because the new mission for the girls is to find some magical kids and teach them how to use their powers. So the bus is entirely magical, every witch has her own classroom ( they'rereally cool ) and they protect magic and the kids. They'll have to fight against a group of magical ladies, but it's in the future. The asian family you see are important in this story line, the father opened a magical portal but lost one of his daughter because sh went into this world, due to that, he wants to erase all of the magic.The Witches will fight this, and also discovered the other world which is kinda cool

As an european we had this on Jetix My favourite show ever... I loved how hardcore the show was in a girly theme... I wish they could have pushed it more to hardcore style

I loved how it's not always a life lesson. Winx club is like you have to be nice to others so you can defeat the evil ones. But w.i.t.c.h feels like an actual teenage girl. Normal life has somehow turned into an epic fantasy. I also love the action too.

Considering only about half the comic series has been officially translated into English, there is a lot most don't know. There is an unofficial fan translation available online, but now that Yen Press is rereleasing the series, and retranslating it, then there is a good chance that people will learn about all that was never brought over. Yes, they eventually got new powers, and that is what you were seeing. An offhanded comment in the show (if I remember correctly may have been the comics as well), by Hay-Lin, when she saw her grandmother's guardian form, she mentioned that her grandmother looked like how she looked in her wedding photo. So they basically transform into what their bodies would be like in their prime. It kinda makes more sense, since they'd be physically stronger when in their prime. The popular reason why W.I.T.C.H. was canceled in the USA, was because of it competing with Winx Club, and losing. The comics lasted until they ended in 2012, but only in their original country. I am not too sure when the comics were canceled in the USA, but my guess is that they weren't selling too well and were canceled when the show was. Hopefully, you continue to read the comics, as they get reprinted.

The intro lowkey gave me false nostalgia I literally never heard of this before but that intro gave me so much nostalgia, partially for a time I never experienced/was too young to even see it or remember (I was born 2010)

In my country it was coming out as as an original magazine, not part of a Disney one. There always was some kind of souvenir with it, like a lip gloss, little mirror, perfume, bracelet, ring and necklace (once it was the heart of Kandrakar). I was collecting all the magazines up to some point. Until I got grew up a little. Still It has a special place in my heart. I remember when my mum made me this dress Will is wearing at 9:50 but in purple for a costume party in my school. She is the champ, she even made the hat.

The French magazine is so different from the one in the UK. It had the graphic novel section but pretty much all the other articles still had art from witch and linked it back to their friendship or something like that. It was a lot thinner too.

I loooved the witch comics so much 🥰 The comics were so expensive for me as a little girl, but my grandpa used to buy them for me most of the time. My bff used to love them too and we would talk about them 24/7. Thank you for reminding me of these wonderful memories.

Sailor Moon got me into W.i.t.c.h., W.i.t.c.h. got me into Winx Club, and Winx Club got me a lot of other anime and animated TV series.

I always loved the art of the Witch comics and honestly I still do. Aged well, they were just actually good. Not like Winx haha

I'm French and had the chance to grow up with some magazines with the story! They were my big sister's ones so it wasn't named Witch mag at first, it was in the Minnie magazines! The graphic of all the mags are absolutely identical though, the lettering, the fashion photos, the personality tests (yes this wasn't a Witch quiz, each magazine had a girly personality test, the one you read was "are you sophisticated or natural?")... But we only had few magazines and I was stopped in the plot with a big suspense D'8 ! I tried to check the continuation of the story by reading some of the books in the supermarket, but I never got the good ones so I gave up on it. But it's really strange to read in these comments that the story took such a drastic turn, with young witches to teach and all that! I was still in the fantasy universe with Elyon and all that stuff XD... Thank you for reminding me of those series and showing me this old magazine with the original comics, it means a lot and brings me a big smile of nostalgia 💕

I am from Italy and I remember buying the very first release of this comics and there were usually collectible toys coming with the volumes (that's why you see a perfume). It was one of the best reading of my childhood and i cannot tell you HOW FAMOUS this got in my country it was everywhere and every one of my friends read it.

Cornelia dreamed of Caleb for years before finally meeting him in the underworld. The comics are WAY better than the show. Reading it you quickly grasp the layout. Elyon is very important for the plot, no, it doesn't work better in the show. The show didn't show her relationship with Cornelia and her slow turning to the dark side. Also you don't see the dilemma Cornelia is facing- should she live in the past and focus on her dream boy or live in the present and date Taranee's brother. Will's family drama isn't present - her mom getting married to her most hated history teacher. Irma's split personality - the hot guardian who gets the boys and the real girl who's only liked by a nerd. Also she has a terrible relationship with her dad. Taranee goes from a boring nerd to a street dancer who dates a "bad boy". Hay Lynn was a weirdo, understood only by her grandmother who passed away soon after. The comics were for teens, the show was for kids.

I collected probably hundreads of these magazine as a kid. Still have them somewhere lol. Either way I would have read further but they stopped releasing it in Finnish so that was the end of it. The magazine you had there is also one I remember reading so it has to be at least 6 years old. Probably more ngl. If they did translate later parts to english at least I might still order them (since I know the language now), it really bothered me that they kinda just flopped here because of poor sales though. Looking at this now the art style brings back so many memories. It was one of the things that got me into manga too and these days drawing fanart is my main hobby. Overall just a big part of my childhood and development, love to see people talk about it. Now excuse me, I need to make a trip to the attic for some old treasures

I really enjoyed Witch when I was a kid. I loved them so much that I would actually argue with my classmates about what's better: Witch or Winx club. Now as an adult, I feel I should watch both so I can finally know the answer XD

Technically, the layout isn't that big of a deal LOL I would just read the way the bubbles are coming in order, not the boxes. Mainly because the artwork in that box was vertical but the the bubble was as high as the first boxes bubble. Just read from left to right.

I so strongly remember reading that magazin but in german. I love the new transformation outfits - which also happend several magazins bevor the one he looked at - and i love how mature they got. I need to look for my comics.

I loved this comic. I discovered it online as a kid. I’m in the USA so never saw anything about witch outside the internet. I wasn’t aware it was so popular in other countries. Very jealous but I’m now ordering all the comics to read from Amazon. :)
