It really does seem like the west coast got blacklisted after 2pac died. I don't recall another west coast album making a buzz until Dr. Dre's "Chronic 2001" was released in 1999.

It is what it is. When Pac died and Suge went to prison, that Westcoast momentum faded. YES, Westcoast artists continued to put out music. But absolutely NOTHING on the Westcoast coming out after Pac's death hit as hard as what the Westcoast was dropping BEFORE Pac's death. Master P and No Limit pretty much took over the entire game at that point. The Westcoast didn't get another hit until Game dropped The Documentary. Is what it is.

Na it was the labels not pushing West coast music on a major level. We still listened to kurupt Nate, WC, Warren g, snoop. But snoops albums were meh. It wasn't until the game came out and the new era could relate, Do to 50 cent. Those who liked mainstream would listen to 50 cent before Nate and kurupt etc. because it was the new hot shit (mainstream) The labels were scared to work with the West. And games first 3 albums were straight bangers start to finish. But to say the game had the West on his back is WRONG. Kurupt put out a album the same year game did and nobody cared smh

I liked all of that music, mostly, but none of those guys scored big commercial hits like we saw in the G-Funkl era, circa 1992-1996. The shiny suit era basically killed off movements like Hoo Bangin' Records, which put out dope music like Eiht"s "Section 8" album, but flopped commercially. The landscape in hip hop changed dramatically.

@southsidecompton9668 The seeds were planted in the 80’s with all this commercial shit. Run DMC Walk This Way. Kid N Play. The shit Hammer and Vanilla Ice was doing. The streets of LA should have let Christopher Wallace go on his merry way. Killing Biggie did a lot more damage than people realize. The industry shut the door on the west coast in 1997. The old timers remember the Bad Boy movement of 1997. Puffy’s takeover sent Hip Hop right down the toilet.

The comment about rappers coming from the Dr. Dre umbrella is very valid but the west coast did make a comeback. Glasses Malone was mentioned but you also had Nipsey, YG, Schoolboy Q, Dom Kennedy, etc. I don’t think any one region is running the game right now. It’ll never be like how it was in the 90’s in that regard. Personally I don’t think anybody should care if outsiders gravitate towards the music. Who cares if it’s on EVERYBODY else’s minds? How does the west coast feel about it’s own music? I always wondered why the rest of the west coast didn’t really step up the plate? There’s more rappers than just Sir-Mix-A-Lot from Washington state. Oregon might have an underrated scene on the low too. They might not be on the coast but Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico etc is still the west as well. The west is huge. What’s accept as the east coast is just regulated to NYC, Jersey, Philly for the most part so it was kinda easy for their stuff to fizzle out eventually. There’s a lot of undiscovered talent out west but it didn’t seem like the surrounding areas really tried to get out there.

96 Pac died. Death row fell off. Death Row played a major role in keeping southern Cal in the game. Outside of Cali. The Bay was still dropping heat. Master P was screaming Richmond to New Orleans in 1996 Ice cream album. That's when things start changing for southern Cal rap. No Limit was the one that put a choke hold on the game. P filled Pac shoes for a little bit. Because from 1997 - 1998 No Limit records produced about 28 albums. Not to mention Snopp Dogg signed with N.L. in 1998. While all that No Limit was mainstream. Cash Money had a great bit of the southern region on lock on the underground. Then they went major in 1999. Around 1996 - 2005. The South had too much heat. From No Limit , Rap a Lot , Suave house , Cash Money Records , Hypnotized Minds. That's just a few in a 600 mile radius. All those labels were dropping hit after hit.

I have much love for LA culture and hiphop.. I’m from The Bay and we different up here.. But we respect it 💯 But most of the rappers that has had major success from LA had Dr. Dre’s or NWA’s help and or production.. Think about that.. Eiht's naive if he thinks street sh## like the murders of Popsmoke and PNB Rock don't reflect negatively on LA artists/hip hop, whether it be fair or not. Those two, just like 2Pac, Biggie, Drakeo and Nipsey Hussle, were killed by LA gangmembers. These companies are not going to invest millions of dollars into LA artists, particularly those who are affiliated, if they think they're not likely to see a return on investment due to situations out of their control. Kendrick and The Game made it outta LA, because they had the Dr. Dre co-sign, which is equivalent to money in the bank. Well worth the risks. Other LA artists, who lacked that co-sign, just weren't worth the risks to companies like Interscope, Universal, Sony etc. There was definitely an industry-wide backlash against LA following the murders of 2Pac and Biggie. Also, outside of Dr. Dre and Dj Quik, west coast producers didn't evolve their sound despite the fact that the game was changing sonically circa 1997-98. It wasn't until YG & Dj Mustard that LA even had a newer sound, which is why those guys were able to make hits that went outside of the LA region.

@@LouisianaCboz that's true, but he was only on the major label system for 2-3 more projects after Dre stopped messing with him. Game's been indy for a while now. Game sold 4 million with Dr. Dre & 50 Cent. I'd venture to guess he hasn't matched that number, even combining everything he's put out since then. Point being, Dr. Dre's co-sign and executive producing his debut is what gave Game's career life. Otherwise, he'd be Glasses Malone, Bishop Lamont status right now: good LA rappers, whose music nobody cares about.

The bottom line is that after TUPAC died, SUGE KNIGHT got locked up, SNOOP DOGG left DEATH ROW, causing the RECORD LABEL to fall apart; the west coast GANGSTER RAP totally lost its DOMINANCE in the Rap industry. It was not until 2005 when THE GAME came out that you finally had a major west coast GANGSTER RAP come back on the mainstream rap scene. Because between 1998 and 2005, GANGSTER RAP was TOTALLY dominated by hardcore east coast rappers. ESPECIALLY DMX and 50 CENT. When DMX was at the PEAK of his success, the MAINSTREAM RAP INDUSTRY did not need a west coast GANGSTER RAPPER, because DMX completely fit the description of everything the RAP INDUSTRY would look for in a GANGSTER RAPPER. DMX had authentic STREET CREDIBILITY, TRAUMATIC CRIMINAL BACKGROUND, VIOLENT HARDCORE RHYMES, FEROCIOUS AGGRESSIVE DELIVERY, and the PERFECT VOICE for HARDCORE STREET RAP.. When it came to GANGSTER RAP, it could get no more RAW than DMX. When DMX was in his prime 1998-2003, you barely heard a PEEP out of west coast GANGSTER RAPPERS on the mainstream level. DMX was the REAL DEAL who had the entire RAP INDUSTRY SHOOK. DMX was a different kind of ANIMAL. He was a TOTAL RAP SAVAGE. The last time the RAP INDUSTRY was that SHOOK off of a GANGSTER RAPPER before DMX, was when TUPAC and ICE CUBE were in THEIR PRIME.

Dre's very selective in who he works with, that's why. Plus he went thru the nonsense at Death row, so I think he was burnt out on signing gang affiliated rappers like that. Remember, he was about to drop Game from Aftermath until Jimmy Iovine got 50 Cent to go in the studio with Game, and basically write all the hit singles on The Documentary. Dre was making so much money off Eminem and 50 Cent, he really had no incentive to look for an LA/westcoast artist. Nah after Pac died you gotta look at society, it went from the golden era of our legends growing up in the hood, playing basketball, football, wrestling, tumbling, playing boxing, Kung fu / karate, having fights, selling weed on the corner in the hoods, shooting guns , etc….now after Pac died not too long afterwards the internet/ social media blew up & once that happened it killed it as far as trying to get a deal with a label….like the Legend rappers always say This generation don’t need no label, they blow up on social media first & the labels come to them after they see that you have already blew up….Now the problem with this format is that you rob the up & coming rappers from getting into there craft & trying to be great, back in the day our legends were trying to impress the labels to get a deal so they would study there craft & try to be as dope as the top emcee in the game at the time. Today it’s a lot of young kids that is blowing up these trash rappers out here & that’s why anybody who has any common sense is like “ Who the hell is that , I don’t know one song by him “

People outside of Cali during the 90's loved LA's version of gangster culture but around the year 2000 everybody got bored of it because it was showboated and pushed so hard on everybody outside of Cali back in the 90's. Nothing positive for black folks was coming out of LA so everybody switched their new focus to Atlanta, Houston and NY again. Black LA during the 90's was like new version of the Jim Crow south of the 1930's and people wanted to avoid it.

Agreed.. But the topic was West Coast. I graduated in 95 I remember the whole (thug life) movement (I was down) I have a huge CD collection from that era. The west coast was on fire from 90 to 96 and still today hasn't recovered since 2pac death. Gangster rap was never the same again.. I would love to have a discussion between 90 to 96. This is how it went. After TUPAC was murdered, SUGE KNIGHT went to jail for other reasons, DR. DRE already left death row a few months prior to TUPAC'S murder, SNOOP DOGG fell out with SUGE and went to NO LIMIT RECORDS. Once DRE started AFTERMATH RECORDS, he signed DETROIT White rapper named EMINEM. Between 1998-2003, hardcore east coast rappers dominated again. ESPECIALLY east coast rappers like DMX, JAY Z, JADAKISS, and BEANIE SIGEL in particular. Once BIGGIE and TUPAC died, both of their replacements were New York rappers. JAY Z picked up where BIGGIE left off, and DMX picked up where TUPAC left off. DMX was like a combination of ONYX and TUPAC put together with authentic STREET CREDIBILITY and an EMOTIONAL RANGE that was similar to TUPAC. So therefore at that time, the INDUSTRY did not really need a west coast GANGSTER RAPPER, because they had DMX, who singlehandedly took east coast rap back to the STREETS in 1998 after the PUFFY SHINY SUIT dominance the year before. And DMX was as RAW as they come for HARDCORE STREET RAP. And even when the DMX dominance started to die down after 2003, 50 CENT dominated east coast GANGSTER RAP under DR. DRE'S record label. It was not until 2005 a west coast GANGSTER RAPPER took center stage again with the release of THE GAME'S debut album "THE DOCUMENTARY", which was also under DR. DRE'S RECORD LABEL and assisted by an east coast GANGSTER RAPPER 50 CENT. So basically between the year 1998 and the year 2005 when THE GAME came out, DMX and later 50 CENT were the east coast face of GANGSTER RAP, which was one of the main reasons the RAP INDUSTRY had less interest in promoting west coast GANGSTER RAP during those years. The most dominant years for west coast GANGSTER RAP was 1992-1996.

Him and Death Row was running things and you didn't care to even get some shine. Y'all killed Tupac, knew who did it and then did nothing. Damn even killed Biggie too. Nipsey. PNB Rock and Pop Smoke y'all killed. Nobody doing business with gangbangers. Westcoast has a reputation of killing rappers. Remember Snoop and Suge dissing the Eastcoast and Queen Puff? You dissed the f outta the East at the Source awards and the big players in NY black balled you. I live on the East, after Pac died the Westcoast music scene did too. The Westcoast let the South take their spot and then the whole game. They never forgave or forgot that. They never really played Game here but Kendrick they did.
