As a Wisconsin resident, I would almost always go winter backpacking with snowshoes and/or hiking poles. Weather is never predictable. Postholing is exhausting. Hiking poles are great for stability and slippery conditions with the added benefit of pumping warm blood into your hands as you swing your arms. I would also never winter hike without tinted ski goggles. The wrap-around lenses would protect your eyes from high winds, driving snow, sleet and protects your eyes from the harmful and painful effects of the sun's UV rays reflecting off the snow (i.e. snow blindness).

Get Susie some trekking poles, it can be more difficult for a light woman or man to keep their balance with a heavy pack. I once fell into a ice cold river try to cross and now I bring poles. Helps with steep declines as well.

You guys have no idea how much I've enjoyed your videos. In October I went in to hospital for a minor procedure and long story short, it went bad. I now know what it feels like to be dying. I was not only stuck there for a month but I could hardly move, and couldn't even go outside. I asked them is it healthy to not go outside for a month? So, your videos of wide open spaces, out free and camping was my window to the world. I'm now at the point I can walk about two miles so I'm getting better - and still watching!

Emergency devices are good if used right, had an incident here in sweden 2 years ago where a couple was hiking in the swedish mountains. The weather changed fast, wind from the north, snow started to fall and the temprature dropped from +15C to 0C. They only had clothes for summerhikes because they were hiking in june. They pressed the SOS button and a helicopter got them out of there. Since this wasnt a real emergency they were fined 14.000SEK (aprox 1700 dollars) for that. The funniest part of this is that they only had to hike for 300 meters to get to a shelter cabin that you are allowed to use in these conditions. Map/GPS, knowledge, right gear and experience had solved their problem. I usually hike in the swedish mountains to find good fishing spots and learned that you need winter clothing upp there. If the wind comes from the north the temprature can drop below freezing point.

Winter tips for you, if your boots have a removable liner, place the liner inside an inside out bread bag, then put the liner and bag into your boots. Keep a good supply of bags with you as the bags do wear out. The added layer will help keep your feet dry. Your boots may be waterproof, but snow finds its way in around so many places one didnt think possible. If you use gators around the boot and pant leg, thats great, but try to get the pant leg over the boot as well. Mittens are great in cold weather, but keep an eye on the directions of the hand warmers, some of them are not to be used directly on the skin.

When I was a park ranger, I had a whole family poo all around their campsite despite a fully functional flush bathroom 100 yds away. It was so disgusting! And they were still in the park at another campsite. So I bagged up their waste, went and wrote them a citation, kicked them out of the campground and told them to "take their s*** with them!" People are gross.

Grew up in a mountain area, lived and worked in another. You never stop learning (which is a nice way of saying messing up, hopefully in small ways). Slept in car parks, bus shelters, road repair huts... Most Mountain Rescue Teams publish a gear list, for their areas. I feel compelled to respond to the comment made that because Susan "had taken over the channel" that he felt he could no longer watch. I hope that Susan DOES continue to be a part of TOGR channel. Have you looked into Delta pegs or even Hilliberg snow pegs. The snow pegs can be used in sand as well. Surprised about the Fjallraven gaiters.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed your trip safely. Trekking poles might be something to consider. Strength & honor.

I had to walk off a mountain once when my cross country ski binding broke. Seemed like an easy trail on skis but the snow was above my knees when I was walking out. Brutal slog all the way down. Since then I've got a decent respect for snowshoes.

For some folks, the best four season tent is staying the night at the Four Seasons. 😁 I've been staying in an Arctic Oven Pipeline this week. Comfy warm but not lightweight by any means. Recently purchased a Naturehike Hily 3 with the intent of adding a stovejack to the vestibule. I already know it'll be as breezy as a shotgun shack.

Thanks for your post! My lady and I found a beautiful remote camp spot, you couldnt walk 10 ft in any direction with out seeing toilet paper! Take a shovel or spade people, Please ! Cheers !

I saw in the video, you guys work so hard at staying positive. I heard Susie talk so positively about the beauty she was seeing, while her eyes were telling me how miserable she felt. 😃 I love watching you guys share your life. Thank you.

The amount of snow and wind really validated your decision to give the shelter to the more inexperienced group. For you, these situations are a good challenge, but for them it could be life threatening. Glad they also made the correct decision to bug out before the snow got too deep.

Hi Luke and Susan, This was a great follow up to the last adventure. I really enjoyed the different, yet similar, perspectives to the same adventure. I've done a bit of winter camping in Missouri and Colorado. Different climates, both cold, both snowy, the preparation is similar - but different. And the key, as you both mentioned, is staying dry. It was easier to sweat in the Rockies (more sun, higher thermal effect) , but the wet snow of the mid-west laughs at Gore-Tex as it clings and penetrates (hah! is that all you got?!) Thanks for another great vid.

I started wearing mittens a few years ago. They are definitely better than gloves. 👍👍 The Smartwool face mask is also great.
