An in depth discussion and my opinions on The Quarry!
This video is one so many of you have been waiting for and I am so happy to be reviewing it. As the sequel to Until Dawn this game is massively debated and discussed. I love the premiss and story of the game except for the endings. While the graphics are amazing, the characters started to fall apart as the game went on with many of them not having any developments or anything to do at the end. I look forward to reading all of your thoughts and opinions down below!
As always, leave your thoughts down below in the comments section I love reading what details and secret endings I may have missed. I also love reading to see if you guys enjoyed the game or not:)

I believe the water fear had to do with a rabies symptom, where someone who has rabies is deathly afraid of water (mostly drinking it, since drinking the water could potentially help with getting rid of the disease) so if that's the case I think it's very cool they added it!! Also if I'm wrong lmk, I am not trying to spread false info lol

An interesting thing too is water seems to escalate their transformation. It explains why Nick changed so quickly and Laura also changes soon after she falls into the pool (which is also when her eye heals completely).

I thought it was kinda funny that the reasons the werewolves just explode all their skin off was because they couldn't figure out a neat way to have an actual transformation that hasn't been done to death. So instead its a gore explosion. That was neat.

Fun fact: Zach Tinker (Jacob) mentions that at least 20% of the story was cut out due to Covid-19. He also mentions that there were suppose to be more scenes with Jacob and Emma and the writers were afraid that the game will never release. With this information, I believe the story writers had to quickly change the ending with the podcast and remove scenes since the actors had to stop filming due to Covid

My biggest complaint with the endings were the lack of the after-game interviews with the characters. I felt like that gave a lot of closure to Until Dawn, and let you see the consequences of your decisions, who is alive, traumatized, etc. The Quarry really needed something like that.

Some things are just a product of their time. Until dawn came out during the telltale era, where all choice based games got the rep of "waking sims where your choices never actually matter". UD subverted those expectations completely, and I also just think it was pretty genius of them to make a choice based game where the core story doesn’t actually change, it’s just the characters who can live or die. It was less effort for them, but the player choices still had consequences which was a rarity at the time. Plus let’s not forget how huge RU-vid gaming was back then, especially in the horror genre, that definitely helped to blow this game up as well. Now that’s not to say that until dawn wouldn’t have been successful if it had been released today, but I do think that back then all the pieces fell into place to make it a phenomenon. When it comes to the quarry, I enjoyed it for what it was. I played it with my friends and we had a good time. But for me personally, the game was a bit too lighthearted. I know that’s probably just what they were going for, but until dawn made a huge impact on me with some of its deeper topics. From the very beginning when the two sisters die, there’s an underlying sense of dread. And Josh’s story in particular was what made the biggest impact on me back then. We witness how traumatized and delusional he became and watch his mental state slowly deteriorate, until he has a breakdown that leads to him either dying or meeting the same fate as his sister. But even after he’s gone, the real threat is still there. Seeing all the surviving characters just utterly distraught and traumatized at the end really made this game memorable. Even if you manage to keep everyone alive, it doesn’t feel like a good ending. What started as a silly and kinda cringy b-horror movie ended like THAT. That’s what I call subversive. Another huge standout for me was the intricate lore about the miners, the sanatorium and the wendigos. That I was really missing in the quarry. Right of the bat I noticed several plotholes and at the end I was left with a ton of unanswered questions which was unfortunate, because again I think the lore in until dawn was nearly perfect, and in this game it’s like they didn’t even really try. The endings were a huge gripe for me as well, I was full on expecting a post credit scene or just some kind of closure for these characters, but it never came. It was very abrupt and just felt super unsatisfying, so overall I don’t think I could’ve gotten nearly as attached to this game as to until dawn, even if I tried. As I said, I like the quarry for what it is, but I truly don’t think that there will EVER be another until dawn. 🌕

Love all the points you made and I agree! It's interesting how I don't think it would actually be too hard to top until dawn today, but somehow they still end up making games that just don't feel as thought out and polished? Like you said abt the lore in until dawn, I love how it feels like something that exists outside the story of our main cast, whereas the quarry just... doesn't. With the quarry especially it feels as if the later half of the game just fizzles out, like they ran out of time or just haphazardly wrapped everything up because the writers got bored or something. I know that's probably not the reason, creating a choice based story game isn't easy, but even though the graphics keep one-upping themselves, the stories sadly never reach those heights that until dawn set. And even until dawn had so much potential to be even better than it already is! I hope someday they manage to make a game equally as captivating and horrifying.

I agree completely! Like the ending to until dawn and watching, how they continued to get more and more traumatized throughout the night and also watching how the characters changed. I started out hating Mike and by the end I loved him and same with Emily. I absolutely hated Emily so much but after she got through all that I was like damn, she’s bad ass. But yes, on everything you said about until dawn and the impact the ending had. it was just sad, I felt no satisfaction from it but still enjoyed the game. like you stated everything perfectly and I agree with all those points . With the quarry we only had that podcast and honestly, I hated listening to the podcast. I especially hated the girl who is in the podcast who wasn’t even going to turn in The evidence they got sent like if you got all the evidence and ending where it said “psycho teens go on killing spree” and stuff. and we didn’t learn that much about the Hackett history at all and there was a ton of stuff and there was no lore about the werewolves. It’s like they just ran out of time or something.

You put it perfectly. I think it’s safe to say that until dawns impact would be hard to replicate nowadays, but that doesn’t mean that the quarry was doomed from the start or anything like that. It sadly just missed the mark in a lot of aspects. One thing that I really loved about until dawn was that it could be played and enjoyed super casually, but it also had intricate lore about the world and characters that the players could dive into if they were interested enough. For example I know a lot of people who played the game casually and just wrote off Josh as a psycho bad guy. But like you, I felt very impacted by his story after digging deeper into the lore and the in game files and realizing that he was pretty much failed by everyone in his life, including his friends, family and even the psychiatric system. That along with so many other details about the world and characters made me grow attached, and 8 years later I still remember this game vividly and fondly. But the same really can’t be sad about the quarry. When it comes to this world and it’s characters, it’s pretty surface level and what you see is what you get. It didn’t feel rewarding to do multiple playthroughs with different choices or read through every single file, it just kinda felt like a waste of time. The ending as well just left me wanting so much more. The podcast is a cool idea in theory, but let’s be honest, I don’t think listening to a 10 minute long podcast while staring at credits is fun for anyone, especially in a game that already has sooo much dialogue to sit through. Like you said, I only listened to the podcast because I was expecting a post credit scene with the characters afterwards. I genuinely thought my game was broken when that didn’t happen because it felt so bizarre to just end the game like this. Having that sitcom-esque cutscene play that shows if/how each character died was fun, but far from any actual closure or satisfying conclusion. It felt like they were trying so hard to replicate until dawn’s tropes that they completely forgot what made that game special, which was the unexpected depth it had.

@@ellu9934 oh god, I forgot that part where Josh was misdiagnosed like that just made it more tragic. Lately I’ve been playing the quarry just for fun and to see all the different endings and stuff but it just doesn’t hit the same and the podcast is insufferable, but I was so upset the first time I sat through it, because like you, I thought there was gonna be a reunion scene, or we get to see the characters and their trauma, because until dawn was amazing with that. Like I got absolutely no satisfaction from the ending of until dawn, but still deeply enjoyed the game. But I’m glad I’m not the only one who sat through that long podcast because they thought that we would get to see them reunited instead of a newspaper clipping on a screen 😐

As someone that didnt play the games, but watched others play both of them, I would add that Until Dawn really had amazing atmosphere work. I remember coming across it on a random stream, during a scene of Emily and Matt in the mountains finding a totem and being instantly sucked in to see what the game is. They really did an amazing job using the setting, and the atmosphere of the lone mountain, the lodge thats too big, like an abandoned hotel a bunch of teens broke into, the sanatorium, the mines... The Quarry for me, really didnt have that. Also, the characters, love them or hate them, were dramatic enough. Part of the fun of watching different playthroughs was to see peoples reactions and thoughts about the characters and the psych "sessions" between chapters. The Quarry I kinda just felt meh about them, im not sure I could really name them. And on top of that as someone else already mentioned, the fact you can play Until dawn "superficially" or very detailed and lore oriented also allowed for more individuality in the playthroughs.

My biggest problem with this game is that the story was obvious from the start. Until dawn kept me guessing until very far in the story. But the best part was that choices actually mattered! There's a lot of 'WHY?!' questions in the game that either aren't answered or are flimsy answers. Like, WHY, if these people are aware of the werewolf situation, aren't the family more careful? They keep Nick in cage at a point, so why can't they cage up the three family werewolves to avoid all death/trouble? Someone told me Kaylee didn't want to be restrained anymore, but, that's telling me she just accepted she'd be loose and could kill innocent people (and this is the same character we are lectured was the 'sweetest kindest person' )
@craigphoenix6522

The cages were bought and Built for Kaylee Caleb and and Chris but for story/plot purposes Kaylee and Caleb never made it back in time and ended up changing in the woods. And Chris was either told or decided to chain himself up on the attic so the cages would be free incase any of the councillors became infected.

My main issues were: What did they do during the first full moon? it mentions that they were there all summer, and Max turned into a werewolf in the jail cell so that means that everybody was still at camp that night Laura gets her eye injured. Where were all the werewolves that night?? Why don't they just use the perfectly good jail cells either at the station or under the house to hold the infected while there are campers around. There was no reason for Chris to be tied to a beam in their creaky old house. I hated that Kaitlyn absolutely knew that Jacob took the rotor arm from the car- she literally told him what it was, but then she never says anything about it. She just stands there while the car is broken and doesn't say anything. She never confronted him about it even jokingly before anything bad happened in the night. I also thought it was silly that cutting Dylan's arm off had no consequences, he's just fine even though he lost all that blood and had no immediate medical help. Cutting off your entire hand with a rusty old chainsaw in a dirty old cabin can not be good for your immune system.

The cells under the house were to be used for Kaylee, Caleb and Chris which I'm guessing is where they were when Laura had her eye cut out while Jedidiah, Bobby and Travis were out hunting for Silas. Until Dawn imo was lightening in a bottle for supermassive. None of their other games in the genre had come close to how good it is. I was expecting this one to be just as good but it wasn’t. It felt so shallow compared to until dawn with some of the same concerns in character development and the endings like you had. I liked the werewolf idea but I think one of the things that made until dawn stand out was the lesser known/used monster wendigo. Werewolves are just generic at this point. Great video and loved your analysis on until dawn and dark pictures.
@sere971
@sere971 9 месяцев назад
I think the best part of Until Dawn is that the monster wasn't even really the starring focus-- you don't really see wendigos until like halfway through the game, if not more than halfway (that point being when Emily is in the mines and has to run away from them). Sure, you can get hints here and there-- the shadowy figures, the movements in and out of frame, the jumpscare with the binoculars, etc. but you don't really *see* the monster for several hours of gameplay, which I personally really enjoyed. There was a lot of time to build up a nice, cozy atmosphere-- to delve into the characters and relationships and even though you know it's gonna be a horror game, you forget that at times when spending a few hours messing around, and even when stuff starts happening, it's mostly focused around Josh's "pranks" rather than supernatural horror. With The Quarry, it felt really disappointing that the monster was shown so soon. I really enjoy those cozy/campy moments in horror games, and while it existed in this game, it just wasn't really comparable because of the characters, the environment, and the time allowed to build those things up. There wasn't really any subplot, it was just a straightforward surface level monster flick-- and while it was definitely still pretty fun, I was hoping this one was gonna be as good as Until Dawn too.

@@sere971 this is also true! The pacing of until dawn was perfect and I loved the how it’s starts out as your cliche teenage slaughter fest but there’s sooo much more to it than that. I still wish they would’ve given more time for Matt and Jess (especially Matt, he’s one of my favs). But even then, they did a good job establishing the relationships and personalities of all the characters in until dawn. The quarry didn’t even come close to that and I’m still salty about it haha. @SassenachSchatz Another major reason Until Dawn turned out better than the studio’s other projects is probably because of the long development time they had. A quick google and Wikipedia search shows that the game was first revealed in 2012 and got pushed back to have a 2015 release date, with some sources saying that the game was initially conceived in about 2010. So the creative team had upwards of 5 years to test certain plot points, pacing issues, and game design elements like the first person perspective, changed to third person eventually, it was originally developed as. As a side note, some RU-vidrs have uploaded footage of a PS3 prototype of Until Dawn that I would highly recommend viewing if anyone’s interested in the development history! Compare that to the Dark Pictures, which was first shown off in 2018 and then Man of Medan was released a year later in 2019. And then the Quarry was revealed a few months before it was released in the summer of 2022. At best the games could have been in early development immediately after Until Dawn, but I find that unlikely when comparing the obvious delay Until Dawn had when it was being ported from PS3 to a PS4 exclusive in 2012. The issue of designing both the Dark Pictures Anthology and the Quarry for single player and multiplayer, while Until Dawn was always meant to be a single player experience, also added a challenge for the relatively small creative team. It’s astounding that the studio can keep producing these games in such conditions, but it begs the question of if this trajectory is sustainable! As an artist myself, I value the effort these creatives clearly put into their work, but also pity them for the decisions made by executives that don’t understand why delaying games can make them more lucrative in the long run.

I feel like emma and jacob had so much more potential as characters, especially since their relationship is a more prominent focus in the beginning. I think Jacob being sensitive is interesting for his character trope and could have been flushed out more and given some chance for redemption by allowing him to act more selfless. Emma I also found initially interesting and I thought her character was gonna go in more of a jess direction where she is insecure or something (At least her chase scene with werewolf max was giving major emily vibes, and was super badass). 29:05 I think in the finale scene Silas was hurt by being hit by the car. So, like Nick in his wolf form escapes after being shot by Abby in the pool house, the werewolves, when hurt, tend to “hide” themselves and be distracted from re-attacking other people. But yeah, I wanted more from this story.

Absolutely agree on wishing there was an option for Laura to cooperate with Travis! I was completely compliant throughout the (imo waaaay too long) flashback, and was rewarded with Laura shooting him even though I didn't take the gun. Then I ended up unintentionally massacring the Hacketts and killing Laura and Ryan in the process, locking myself out of the ENTIRE Silas plotline. I didn’t even know who Caleb was when I shot him! I think Until Dawn did a better job of making sure you got the whole story no matter who made it out alive; like you said, there are enormous holes in The Quarry unless you make specific choice combos and intentionally fail QTEs. Also I'd forgotten about the store! It's such an interesting location to not have come up again. It seems like The Quarry ended up cutting a lot of things, whether for time or to hit a release deadline. 🌓

well in your case, you just fucked your playthrough up a lot bc there is an option to team up with Travis as Laura and even Ryan also lives to tag along. Until Dawn had characters that I both loved and hated; The Quarry has neither of those. I felt indifferent towards every character in The Quarry and I think that's one of its biggest downfalls. Until Dawn used a lot of stereotypical character personalities and it worked for that game. The Quarry feels like they just tried to take the same personalities and spin them up a little to make new characters. I liked the game, but I don't think it's something I'll ever care to replay.

Pretty much that, I ended up only really caring about Dylan, and by the time we visit the Hackett house I was pretty much forcing myself through the story to get to the end, as I either disliked the other characters or found them bland. Doesn't help that I managed to avoid werewolf bites throughout the story and didn't get to have that build them up

I like the characters as concepts, but not in the actual game, and tbh I feel like they never got past the „concept“ stage. In Until Dawn they all are pretty stereotypical as well, but then reveal more depths to that (at least most, arguably that is hard to do for every character with such a big cast and limited time) but this time, I didn’t really care for any of them, cause they never went beyond those three introductory words. There also isn’t really a story happening with them, they’re just slasher fodder- the actual story is Travis and Laura (and Eliza), and they’re the only ones that actually feel like characters. And they’re hardly in the game, even though they ARE the story. I‘m not saying that is 100% true, but it afterwards certainly felt like you could cut out the councellors completely and nothing would change. It doesn’t matter that they stay the night and go out, because Laura would’ve escaped anyway. It’s not stated in any way that the councellors staying caused Chris and his kids to be on the loose. They’re literally just fodder. Even Ryan being there in the end is pointless, why show his relationship with Chris if he can’t reason with him in the end? Why have him kill him if it has no thematic reason? (Maybe it’s just that Ryan was TOO cool and he failed to portray the emotions properly) I liked Ryan at the beginning but as soon as he left with Laura I was like „Why are you even here?“ As if Laura wouldn’t have found a mansion in the woods that is ON THE MAP.That woman patched her own eye up she doesn’t need Ryan guiding her through the woods. I thought the setting is cool and I liked the concept of the story, I just wish they’d flipped the percentages and give us more Laura/Travis and less, but better developed councellors

The reason The Devil in Me has less advanced facial animations than this despite being released after is because this was their prioritized project and The Devil was basically the low budget one of the two, with less assets dedicated to it. Think 10 people working on this and 4 on Devil, with less renders and storing space etc. Also, the solution to this whole scenario would be that Mr Hacket just drove the kids to the hotel in his car, might have needed 2 runs, but you know, still had time.

Also I liked how with the option to shoot nick, veteran players of until dawn most likely remember the Emily choice and so they don’t shoot, (by veteran choice i mean me, rip abi, thankfully I preordered so I only lost a life and still finished the game with all characters alive). Also i can legitimately see myself being friends with most of the people here as opposed to until dawn where I straight up hated half the characters, Still though Until Dawn > The quarry overall, alright time to watch

I vaguely remember the reason Caleb and Kayleigh were unrestrained that full moon was because the Hacketts were tracking them as werewolves in the hopes the kids would sniff out Silus, or group up with him like a wolf pack. It's an extra layer of tension on why Chris was so stressed about getting the councillors gone, and why the Hacketts wanted to blood them (To stop Caleb and Kayleigh getting distracted hunting them instead of Silas)

I liked this game but the fact you have to go out of your way to mess things up to get the most out of the characters feels really counter productive. It’s also a shame some characters just become near-completely irrelevant after a certain point. Like you said, Emma has her whole thing on the island and then just… does nothing afterwards. She sits in a basement alongside Abby who, also had a tense moment she could die in but because she survived the story just went “???” and decided to lock them away in a basement as their function in the plot had been complete.

My main issue with the game was that god awful ending, like talk about blue balls. There’s no closure for almost the entire cast bar Laura and Ryan. It needed a far meatier ending where we get to see the surviving cast come together again and unite in their hellish night. Also; the majority of the cast loses importance to the plot by the halfway point. Max, Emma, Jacob, Abigail and the dude she likes, just get hugely sidelined by Chapter 7, and there’s still hours left. Then it becomes primarily about Laura and Ryan, with Kaitlyn also getting a nice chunk dedicated to her (which is good as Brenda Song was fantastic). It wasd just such a huge missed opportunity, hopefully they get a bigger budget next time so choices are more meaningful. Let us kill Ryan or Laura off and have super friends Emma and Abigail go to the Hackett House etc.

Laura really held the idiot ball this night. She broke into where Chris had been locked up. Wouldn’t that indicate that maybe, just maybe, he wouldn’t be wandering around? Also, Eliza wanting Silas alive. He’s living feral; is this really the life you want him to have? Is his life more important than it’s quality? Also wonder if Kaylee had gone to uncle Travis, and went with setting hay on fire after they (the cops) came back with an answer she didn’t like.

My main gripe with The Quarry, and the reason why it falls short for me, is the lore. Until Dawn has perfect lore. It doesn't leave you with unanswered questions about the who, what, when, where, and most importantly, the WHY. It's the main reason why I'm drawn back to Until Dawn time and again. The world really feels lived in. Like this world could really exist out there somewhere. The Quarry doesn't do that. Why does Eliza exist? Why is Silas the first werewolf? Why include this history about the Hacketts being rum smugglers and do nothing with it? Why is the setting a quarry and not just a summer camp? The setting has absolutely nothing to do with the story itself and that's a massive missed opportunity.
@Emmanuelzz10
@Emmanuelzz10 2 месяца назад
I agree with the rum smugglers and them have a mine under their house but the game is called the quarry so it's gonna be done Ina quarry or associated and Eliza doesn't know about Silas the game explains that she just found him abandoned and Eliza Is a ghost because she died in Hacketts quarry and it said that if someone has a tragic death they are most likely to turn into a ghost
@MissSimone02
@MissSimone02 2 месяца назад
@@Emmanuelzz10 I knew that Eliza died in the fire, but even if she never found Silas to begin with, Silas would still be a werewolf. There has to be an origin for the curse. Besides, we don't know if Silas was a werewolf before being found by Eliza or not. And yeah, I understand the game is named "The Quarry." My problem is that they barely used the setting of the actual quarry itself. Until dawn actually used a name that made sense for the setting and plot; they'd have to survive until dawn. If you're not gonna bother with making the setting an integral part of the story, you shouldn't be writing the story. They could've just called it The Summer Camp Curse.

My biggest disappointment with The Quarry is that the storyline with Dylan's crush on Ryan amounted to nothing. Honestly, why make Dylan the one gay character if it meant nothing? It really feels like they just wanted the diversity brownie points. In a lot of ways, actually- Until Dawn didn't have a gay character, so Dylan is gay! Even though that ultimately has no impact on anything. The one black guy in Until Dawn had some of the least screentime and one of the earliest deaths, so this time Ryan gets to be the big hero! Even though nothing is done with his actual character and story. The one asian girl in Until Dawn was a mean girl, so Kaitlynn gets to be the badass! Even though she doesn't really do anything. Honestly, I really feel like there wasn't enough game in this game. Until Dawn felt like a slasher movie in a lot of ways, but it had enough depth to feel like a GOOD slasher. The Quarry feels like a c-tier slasher movie at best. It could've been so much more, but they barely DID anything with the main cast. Laura is the most consistently compelling character for most people, and she technically isn't even a part of the main cast as we're introduced to them. It's just kind of... Sad. I wish this game were as good as it should've been.

I feel like this is a bit disingenuous. Most of the relationships in the game-straight or gay-didn’t really matter in the end. They were there to set up the story. Why does it matter if one of them happened to be gay? You’re treating it like it has to be grand because it’s different. It’s better that they treat all the couples the same.
@daltongibson1033
@daltongibson1033 9 месяцев назад
It would be disingenuous if it were misrepresenting the actual game, but it isn't. The relationship between Emma and Jacob(? I think that's his name? The one who messed with the car) matters because it directly affects their chatter arcs, and the same can be said for Abbi and Nick. And Laura's ENTIRE character motivation is her boyfriend. But with Dylan and Ryan- or Ryan and Kaitlynn, for that matter- it DOESN'T matter, because ultimately it doesn't actually affect their arcs. It CERTAINLY doesn't affect Ryan's, at the very least. Saying they're all treated the same is simply wrong.

No because I agree with you. With Matt from Until Dawn, they had a recipe to make a great character with him but I really believe they didn't take that opportunity because he's black. His contrasting stories with Emily and her ex really should've been brought out and it could've made a great side story but instead they make it a little silly thing that just happened. And talking about another silly little thing, please correct me if I get this wrong because I cannot remember the Quarry for the life of me, but couldn't the Dylan gay thing be completely excluded if the player just didn't choose those options? Like, it felt like another silly little thing they wanted to implement for, like you said, brownie points. Like this company is great for adding crap just for brownie points it really throws me off.

Wild how gay people (or any minority) have to have _a reason_ for existing to some of y’all in anything. It has to “mean something” for a gay person or someone with a hint of melanin to pop up in media. They can’t just be. Like did it “mEaN aNyThInG” to the actual story for a straight character to be straight? Their *orientations* changed nothing about the story either. Not a single one of them (gay or straight) if you’re talking orientations specifically. You thinking in your second comment that Emma and Jacob as a pair have a relationship that affects their character arcs…like that is about *the writing* itself doing that not their orientations as straight people specifically-if they were Emma and Janet or Eric and Jacob, but written _The Exact Same_ way in terms of plot relevance and arc development then it would be fine, yes? If Laura’s motivation was about a girlfriend, then I’m assuming that (with it affecting the plot then) that would be fine, right? As long as it affects the plot? If so, then your issue isn’t with Dylan *needing a reason* to exist as a gay person…you have an issue with when the writing doesn’t make relationships (any kind of them-gay, straight, and platonic with you bringing up Ryan and Kaitlyn in that second comment too) relate to the plot. And it’s also wild that in your initial comment about the Black character in UD with little screen time and the lackluster characterizations for the two Asian women in these games feel like you know the issue is the writing there and not ‘omg why is a minority _existing_ here? what is the reason for their presence?’ Where the first comment about Dylan feels very much that latter line of thinking like there doesn’t *need* to be a deeper meaning for Dylan to just be gay. Yes, the relationship could have been more related to the plot…but that has nothing to do with his gayness specifically at all though.

The quarry is one of my favorite games, and this video is REALLY REALLY GOOD !! I agree with almost everything you said, I have my gripes with the game too, I could go on and on lol. I especially agree with your points about the endings, they were kinda weak all things considered, they aren't the WORST thing ever but the fact there's so many of them kinda brings it down. It makes sense tho, I mean having 186 endings, it's going to be hard to flesh out each and every one to the fullest since there's just SO much that can happen in the game, but the fact the most common endings are just as basic is... odd, you think they'd be able to roughly predict which endings would be the most likely for a new player, and just make those more interesting and fleshed out. And wrap up loose ends in every ending its possible in (ex. Emma and Jacob meeting up again and talking at the end of the game) unless the characters are dead or infected I believe those should be included either way too... the Jacob Emma one can be a bit more iffy since it's situational but there could be, SOMETHING. And I agree with the points of abi and Emma not getting the proper ending to their arcs and a resolution of the nick kiss, since that part of the game is unavoidable. A lot of the beginning stuff is unavoidable so getting more info on the characters and their dynamics, we get SOME of that but not nearly enough to make it memorable. And the QTE's being easy was annoying to me too, I believe there should be an option to make them easy or difficult depending on if you'd want the "best" ending, but have the option to challenge yourself. It would be cool to have QTE combos too, similar to sonic unleashed maybe? I wouldn't want them ALL the time, but some choice moments would make it just that more intense !! Having Ryan be more developed as a character and have more of an arc is something I REALLY wanted but sadly didn't get, he wasn't as interesting as I'd hoped he would be. I'm not a big shipper or anything, but seeing if you chose to have him and Dylan flirt and it going nowhere was REALLY disappointing, especially as a gay man myself. Seeing that representation would have been nice (another thing I notices is the campfire kiss w Ryan, you get a close up if he kissed Kaitlyn, but with Dylan the camera is far away, making me thing they intentionally wanted to "hide" the small sprinkle of queer representation we did get, so that's definitely interesting to think about) And I did NOT like Laura before watching this video, I thought she was awful, especially because she flirted with Ryan many times despite being in a relationship with Max. But after hearing your perspective I've grown to like her a bit more!! The arc of her going from caring to selfish and borderline insane is something I somehow didn't pick up (I was too busy being mad at her lol) so that REALLY helped me appreciate her character more!! She still isn't a favorite but I can't say I hate her anymore! I think every character has their qualities and I don't think I HATE any of them, some are just more enjoyable than others This comment is getting LONG ENOUGH as it is but I LOVE this game and your commentary is basically all my thoughts and gripes put into words, and I would love to potentially rewrite the story to be a little better and more enjoyable!! That would take forever but 👀 it's something I'll consider TLDR; I love the quarry, and I agree with this video very much and it's very good!! It put a lot of my own thoughts into words and was overall a good review of the game and it IS worth watching all the way thru ✨️🌕

Yeah, there are two saving graces for characters in chapter 2 which makes almost no sense. *spoiler* Emma’s silver bracelet should’ve been worn, and then he could’ve found it later and been concerned but instead it’s just on the ground for no reason at the beginning of the game. They all prepare to leave and he still wore it without anyone acknowledging it. Also, the stuffed bear choice just makes no sense and players can hardly perceive why it would be helpful to have. It’s just baffling rather than a “oh yeah, I should’ve known I’d want that” kind of moment.

A few things they could have done to tie Eliza in more is to have her sabotage things around the camp or maybe stage accidents where some of the campers will get hurt or almost go missing on full moons in an attempt to get the camp shut down. Also, someone mentioned this as well but having the traveling show happen more than six years ago would have been better. Can still have the backstory for how the family got cursed and instead have Chris be the one who freed Silas. Or maybe just make it to be more recent. This and just having a more climatic ending than just shooting Silas would have also been better. Maybe even having Eliza attack the player after you shot Silas would have been cool. Would have to establish how to kill a ghost before hand but you can just have Ryan say she can be killed by burning Elizas body or throwing water on her when he talks about the ghost in his podcast. Lara could also find this information when she goes through Travis stuff at the police station.

Maybe this is a weird thing with me but one of MY biggest problems with this game lies with the different outfit sets. In the end neither cell phones nor the podcast are really necessary for the plot to progress. I feel like this games time period should have been more ambiguous. It feels so weird to be wearing the 80s outfit set and not only have to listen to more modern music but also have stuff like cell phones, podcasts and Emma's videos that clash with that vibe. Having the game feel more generic in time period could also open up the possibility of other outfit sets such as a 1970s set. I thought the different outfit sets and filters were really cool, but I get so brought out of the moment by all the modern references.

🌕 I don't like horror at all usually, but I enjoyed watching a playthrough of this game (I didn't play it myself though). There is a lot in this video that I wasn't aware of, since the playthrough I watched managed to get almost everyone killed at the first opportunity (not intentionally, mind you).

I feel like them wanting to make their games heavily multiplayer and multiple play through based is what has ruined their games. I don’t fully remember if Until Dawn originally came out as multiplayer but I do know that most RU-vidrs who played it just got the opportunity to play all characters in one play through. The issue with things being multiplayer based is that if people end up not playing a certain character they basically miss a whole section of the game. I also just overall think they can’t make games like this without making them long, they’re making it way too short and they don’t get the opportunity to flesh out the majority of the characters.

I absolutely LOVE werewolf games, movies, books, etc. This game got me excited but as it played out it was just too easy to predict and disappointing. The “werewolf” design was my biggest flaw, they just look like copy and paste versions of the “Canima” from Teen Wolf. I also thought the dialogue was interesting but went over the top at times which took me out of it. The first 30 minutes were SO AMAZING, after that the story felt like it was just trying to explain itself the whole time and it lost so much momentum that I didn’t really care who made it by the end. Overall, I’m definitely glad it got made, it just didn’t improve much from Until Dawn and I’d still say Until Dawn has a much bigger impact on me

Love the game, wish they would have played around with the water more. There was the sign that said stay out of the water so i thought maybe the monster came from the water lol. I jokingly called them Merwolfs before i learned the sign was unrelated.

I watched my friend play this game and I went in completely blind. I got so excited seeing Ted Rami because I didn’t expect him to be there and I almost never see him in anything any more. I made so many Chet Kaminski/ Joxer jokes that my friend had to pause the game and ask me to stop 😭

When I first played The Quarry it hooked me and I loved it so much I ended up playing it 4 more times over the course of a week. The first 2 playthroughs were fun (sans Laura's portions, to me they felt longer than they should've been but I'm a little impatient) and even though I enjoyed the others the more I played the more frustrated I got with how little my choices/actions affected anything. I still have a lot of love for The Quarry (it was my first horror game and it still has things to love about it), it always feels like such wasted potential and honestly a little unfinished

Jacob is my favorite character in the game, but yea they definitely needed more of his remorse and growth. Nick and Max were my other two favorites and it just sucks how little they both get to do. Nick is basically out of the story by chapter 4 and I wish we could’ve gotten more with him. Max was a scene stealer who got 3 minutes of gameplay, he absolutely deserved more time in the spotlight.

I think that where The Quarry succeeds more than the other games is the theme and the cinematography. The colors, the pure 80's energy of a gore-fest summer camp horror movie, the werewolves? The whole thing felt very classic. But where it fell flat for some people I think was being too obvious in some areas and too vague in others, as well as making a lot of the plot points feel pretty contrived. Like, why doesn't the summer camp end/start with like a week of padding between full moons? How did they manage the full moons while kids were AT camp, other than the "lodge slumber party", when the lodge was shown to be unsafe anyway? Honestly, I think the vast majority of the story could have been solved if they'd just said it was the Hackett's first time being werewolves or something. Cut the extra bit with Ryan and Laura at their giant house and instead have the entire cast find out about Silas at the same time. Idk. It's still a lot of fun though, and probably my favorite in the series.

I think chapter 7 was to long and most of the time when I replay it puts me off I think it should have just been Laura talking in the pool house and have a choice come up and say the things that happened in the prison and it could have had a choice saying if she shot travis or not I also think everybody should have been able to become a werewolf and have an ending where everyone turns so the game would end early I think instead of the dead/alive thing they should have done the police interviews and have the counsellors traumatised and crying and have an extra chapter where the survivors are in prison and they have to be good to get out early instead of the podcast other than those things I absolutely love this game

Replacing the Podcast with a news report of the counselors’ trials would have been so good!! I honestly hated the podcast credits. Having Ryan be a podcast guy for lore was good but there’s no attachment to the podcast as a player.

Great analysis. I do agree with a lot of it. I do have some thoughts though. 6:25 - I never really noticed many glitches in previous playthroughs other than Ryan's eyes seem to be stuck looking to the left while talking to Laura in the pool house and some cutscenes will have the audio play before the actual scene and then the audio jumps back to match up. 9:22 - I think maybe the amount of content the developers either cut out or cut short could be ruled down to rushing for the release date...I'm not saying it's a valid reason per-se but COVID would have had something to do with it. 20:08 - Yeah Eliza is only happy when you kill the Hacketts and allow Silas to live 20:45 - You can get all councillors infected - in fact there is even a trophy/achievement for it but Abi is the only one that doesn't turn because she was bitten by Kaylee who is later killed by Laura. Ok there's also Kaitlyn that doesn't turn but that's just because she can only be infected in the junkyard 21:45 - if you play it right you can have Jacob confess to Emma about sabotaging the van - but I do agree that scene should have been towards the end when everyone else is around or something. 25:28 - Laura only killed Kaylee because she mistook her for Chris Hackett. She's just trying to cure Max 29:05 - ok I'll give you the Abi one I was skeptical on that too.. unless you get her bitten beforehand, because if you get a character - like Jacob for instance, bitten before he's captured them leave him in the cage later on then werewolf Nick won't attack and eat him when the doors open, it will just walk out. it's like they can smell the infection or something and never attack never attack one of their own. When approaching Silas at the end, yes, he was just attacking the car but was also run over, so he was probably waiting to heal from the injuries. Remember Travis pointed out spotting Blood before heading into the woods. 31:04 - Nick's attack was more severe than Abi's. Nick had cuts from head to toe with a noticeable bite on his leg and most likely other places too - they just weren't shown. Abi however, if she does get bitten is only on the neck/shoulder, imo because Nick's attack was more severe it accelerated his transformation - other than pushing Bobby away Neither of them show any noticeable changes until Chapter 6 in the pool house, Nick may have attitude moments here and there but doesn't show any physical changes until the pool house scene. But Kaylee is already dead at that point so Abi is no longer infected. 31:21 - Nick is Bitten by Caleb, Silas doesn't appear until Ryan and Dylan are in the radio hut. Maybe Jedidiah was shooting at Caleb and Bobby was shooting at Kaylee. Remember the werewolf flees and Bobby immediately tries to see if Abi is infected but when she runs away he goes to get Nick. 1:05:38 - The Body in the lake is the reason they didn't want anyone swimming in the lake. And it's quite far down and if it's not found unless Jacob stumbles across it while trying to retrieve the rotor arm. I'm not trying to degrade the video or anything I really did enjoy It and respect the work you put into it. These are just my opinions

@dozzy9984
@dozzy9984 8 месяцев назад
I remember watching Quarry then Until Dawn when someone streamed those. And there's a major difference in characters that probably is the reason why Quarry ones lack development or depth. In Until Dawn, pretty much all characters except Sam start out as assholes (or if they don't start as ones, they quickly develop into them), to the point that players might be glad that some of them died. Like, from streamer and chat there was no care that Jessica got abducted, no care that Emily fell, no care that Matt disappeared, no care for Josh after the reveal, no care for Ashley after she killed Chris, but also no care that Chris got killed. Literally Matt survived to the ending because Emily was considered so obnoxious that streamer preffered to not save her. The only character people grew on was Mike and Sam was still the favorite. In Quarry most characters (with exception of Emma and Jacob) are instantly likeable instead, which makes it more tense to try to save them during the game. That only grows and even Emma and Jacob become more likeable as the game progresses, same with Travis who is at first portrayed as villain. Not to mention that while in Until Dawn the characters behave like they could easily leave others to die (and some do), in Quarry they work together and are willing to risk themselves for each other to survive. Probably because of those reasons I prefer Quarry. On a side note, the similar thing happens in Dark Pictures between Little Hope (where characters are unbearable that make it challenging to want to save them) and House of Ashes (where characters are a team and they don't want to leave anyone behind, to the point that it might cost one character a life). Like, altruism and teamwork for me are way more pleasant to watch that constant fights (and I bet not just me).

I get what you mean and I can totally see why you love The Quarry since it has a lot of things to appreciate. However, I respectfully disagree on character analysis. For Until Dawn, the characters--apart from Hannah, Beth, Sam, Chris and Josh--are not seen as great characters and the prank pulled on Hannah was cruel and unnecessary, yet nobody intended for her and Beth to disappear, or for what would eventually happen to them. They also all came back to the cabin one year after the incident in order to be there for Josh and attempt to make the most of the situation, and it's also implied that maybe they hadn't seen each other since that day since Sam and Chris didn't even know that Mike and Emily had broken up and that he was now with Jessica. Apart from that, the game also shows that while, yeah, none of the characters are perfect and obviously have their flaws, but at the end of the day, they're also just human and not bad people for the most part--with the exception of Emily--but also another crucial detail; teenagers. Of course they would make mistakes multiple times at that age, just like anyone else in general. Also, while you are right that characters like Matt and Ashley can leave behind and intentionally/unintentionally kill other characters, whether through survival or revenge, just about all the characters also sacrifice or try to help their friends in every way that they can. Mike tells everyone to stay behind in the basement while he goes to get the key from the cable car--and yes, while that was pretty stupid, maybe he just wanted a Plan B or whatever in case something went horribly wrong, like, I don't know, Wendigoes breaking into the cabin or something--Matt tries to save Emily and can actually die from that; Ashley can stay behind with Chris when he's falling behind, while also willing to sacrifice herself when Chris has to choose between shooting her or himself; Sam goes to help Mike with the Wendigoes; Chris goes to check on Josh after the Stranger tells them about the Wendigoes, RIGHT after Mike offers to stay with him to make sure he won't hurt anybody, and of course if Matt and Jess survive in the mines together, Matt will walk really slow with Jessica and tries to keep her safe. Obviously, this is all based on your choices/mistakes within the game, but still happens nonetheless. Jessica, if still alive, also expresses sincere gratitude toward Mike for trying to save her while also asking if he's okay, Ashley can possibly die if she goes to investigate the voice which sounds like Jessica, again, Mike runs out in the fucking snow with just a tank top and jeans to try and save Jessica, and I'm sure there's many other examples which I can't think of off the top of my head, but because of this, I wouldn't call any of the characters selfish or self-centered, with definitely the exception of Emily who accused Matt of basically murdering her when he tried to save her--and again, can DIE from that--while also still hating on Mike because, depending on your choices, ALMOST shot her because he thought she was gonna turn, while also accusing Ashley of wanting her to die when that wasn't even the case in the first place. Anyway, as far as The Quarry is concerned, I can't go into full detail about it since I'm still learning about the game and have never played it myself before and everything I just said you can take with a grain of salt, but that's just my own personal viewpoint of Until Dawn and what I know/have seen of it.

i really hoped that with a cast of 5 campers, they would like flesh out them?, give them more background or interactions with eachother, i get that in until dawn we have 8 heros, but we get to know very well maybe 4 or 5 of them (mike,sam,emily,chris & ashley) but yeah nick got like ten lines. yes this game was somewhat lackluster tbh, but nothing compared to little hope, that one is dead last

I would have loved it if the game put in a feature that The evidence found by a character will be lost if this character dies. Something i would have loved is if the group got the chance to come together during the night and share everything they got to know about their current situation.

Yeah the werewolf transformation is definitely one of my favorite aspects of this game 🙌 I've never played either game-I don't have the consoles and I don't really play too many games in general--but I loooooove watching people play them. I've watched multiple playthroughs of both, but definitely more videos as a whole for Until Dawn. I remember feeling a little bit of disappointment about The Quarry but I had seriously JUST binged so much UD shit cause I just thought it was so unbelievably good, it was a hard act to follow. But I mean, saying TQ isn't AS good as UD isn't any real insult, huh. On top of the transformation I've never been huge on werewolves but these are some of my favorites I've seen :)
