Zelda games usually have death counters. In the original NES Legend of Zelda it is a true death counter, because if you use up-A to go to the save screen and quit it does not count it, nor does it count a death if you select 'retry' after dying - only if you die and continue. In Zelda 2, however, it is a game counter, so it counts a game when you up-A to save as well as when you game over. In A Link to the Past the counter is hidden until you complete the game, and in the credits shows you the overall count as well as a break down count for each dungeon (this one may also be a game counter, meaning it counts even if you just save and quit without dying, but my memory is uncertain on that aspect). BOTW does not have a death counter because there is no option to continue after death, selecting 'continue' is the same as selecting 'retry' in the original, so you start from the previous save, although you may quit and then manually choose which save file to load.

I remember my younger neighbors came over after I beat it and they were in SHOCK and awe asking “you only died 3 times?!??”. That’s when I learned it may be a death count.. I honestly thought they were wrong because I was sure I died way more. Always gotta have a few fairies!

🤦‍♂️ *Same. It's been 22 years since I first played OoT and I had no idea this whole time. I remember seeing this video for the first time a year ago and I once again completely forgot about this. So, watching this video just now had me like, "Oh sh!t! I forgot all about that again!" I have OoT on pause on my other phone right now and I didn't notice what number it said on the start menu this time either. I'm sure I'll forget again.* 😂

Theoretically if you were to die nearly 4.3 billion times I believe that is what would happen.

Nothing changes when you specifically Game Over while fighting Ganon, it's just the same Game Over screen as any other part of the game. Does Game Overing in other parts of the game create different timelines? If I Game Over in the Lost Woods before I get a sword does that create the CDi games timeline??

There's a similar thing where the counter stops in Pokémon Sword and Shield, discovered it when shiny hunting Golurk that it just stops at 999. Even the games like "Dude stop!"

I learned this just a few years back when the number became much lower to none as I learned to capture fairy’s in a bottle which I was sadly deprived of know when I was a child. Along with “Save States”. So we always just died and started over when I played growing up which made us better players. But the fairy in a bottle was life changing for me. I thought the number was some kind of progress counter until I realized with a lot of progress it still being low. Cool feature to flex on your gamer buddies. This game is timeless!!!!!

tbh I expected it to roll over to 0, or if not that then to give a strange and random figure. It staying at 999 would've seemed to me the least likely result. It feels like this might indicate that they programmed it to do this on purpose for some reason, because it feels like this sort of thing most often causes an overflow in most games

thats commonly what the game does in other circumstances when there's no way of displaying it, like if you get 1000 gold skultullas then it uses random garbage instead of numbers to display

Technically it is not a death counter, but a "Game Over" counter because if you die and are revived by a fairy the counter does not go up Sadly this got removed in OoT3D
