Meet my real life patient, Michelle! Michelle is an incredible patient who experienced a robotic hysterectomy after years of intense cramps and month-long periods.
In my last video, Michelle shared about what it was like to experience a robotic hysterectomy and when you know you need one. • Why you may need a hys...
Now, she's giving honest feedback on what the hysterectomy recovery process looks like and how her life has radically changed after the surgery! Michelle talks openly about:

I had a total hysterectomy and fibroid removal on 6/28/22. The pain after the surgery was healing pain. I didn’t realize how much pain I had been dealing with pre-surgery but I’m so happy I did it. Two other co-workers had it done before me and told me they wish they would have done theirs sooner. I’m taking it easy and off pain killers since Saturday. I can’t wait to go back to work and get back to life. I wish everyone well!!

@TexastoArizona: Thanks for sharing your story. Thanks for being a subscriber. The most common sentiment we hear postoperatively is "why didn't I do this sooner'. That being said, it is a very personal choice and not for everyone.

I'm about 36 hours away from my total hysterectomy. I have so much anxiety right now but this story was great to hear. I had my final child 6 weeks ago and cannot put my hysterectomy off any longer. I appreciate hearing Michelle's experience.

I can attest to overall health improvement after my vaginal hysterectomy at age 35 due to endometriosis. After suffering horrible periods since age 13, with intense cramps, it was a relief to end all of that! My ovaries did go into a bit of shock, and I felt a little depressed, but got through that. I can also attest to the fact that my sexual function vastly improved....an unexpected side effect.

Yeah Michelle! I am one week post op and like you I too am very happy with my decision and progress so far. I am not having any pain or discomfort so I am not taking any pain meds since day 2. I look forward to seeing my doctor next week for my post op appointment. I suffered with undiagnosed adenomyosis for way too long!! I am so thankful to my second doctor who listened to me and sent me for an mri. The images were scary and amazing at the same time!

Best decision I made in my life!❤️❤️❤️had an abdominal hysterectomy due to heavy heavy bleeding and two huge fibroids! Surgery went smoothly, very little pain. I’ve been active for years before surgery and after surgery so I’m doing wonderful! Just wish I’d done it over 10 years rather than at 54! I still have my ovaries still have not reached menopause but I’m doing great! Never want to go back to over 20yrs of flooding to the point of severe anemia! I have my life back and I’m going to travel so much more now that I don’t have to schedule my trips around bad periods&bloating! Not only that, because of the huge fibroids and enlarged uterus I lost 4 inches on my waist and it’s only been 10 days since surgery. If I’d waited another year just waiting to go into menopause, which I don’t think was going to happen anytime soon… this one in particular fibroid would be the size of a watermelon! and the other one would be the size of a grapefruit!

I had a failed endometrial ablation last year so now I have hysterectomy consult scheduled , so nervous but so ready to get this behind me. I’m 28 and have kids to keep up with so I’m tired of pain and bleeding weeks at a time keeping me down from enjoying life
@DoctorRich
@DoctorRich 3 года назад
Endometrial ablation is a great first option. However statistically 30% of post-ablation women will eventually have a hysterectomy. Make sure you advocate for a Robotic (or minimally invasive) procedure. Make certain you are comfortable with your surgeon's experience level with the technology.

Thanks for this video. Is it true that the broad ligaments that are attached from the uterus, and to the spin or rib cage, can cause a less curvy look in female body, and cause back pain?
@DoctorRich
@DoctorRich 2 года назад
Aquarius; Thanks for your comments. The Broad ligament actually attaches the uterus to the lateral pelvic sidewall. It is the Uterosacral ligament that attaches the posterior cervix to the sacral promontory. These are internal attachment points however. These ligaments do not correlate with body habitus. Back pain can be caused by a retroverted uterus, fibroids, or endometriosis.

I have a melon size fibroid and having a hysterectomy in a month. I have kids and am trying to find out what to expect to know how to care for them. Like how soon after can I drive, or even cook and clean...? I have had blood clots, so can't take hormones, how can I work around that?

A Huphries: You recovery will largely depend on the type of surgery that you are having. Most surgeons would perform a C-section type incision for a large fibroid. Your recovery will be 2-3 months. However, you are likely a candidate for Robotic surgery which allows for a 2 week recovery. We would be happy to perform a telehealth visit for a second opinion. Please schedule at 915-533-5600

@@DoctorRich Hi! How would I submit the MRI pictures in advance for a telehealth visit? How often do you perform robotic myomectomy on fibroids that are 28cm or larger ?
@DoctorRich
@DoctorRich 2 года назад
@@michelleinfo-vlog2449 : Thanks for your question! Every doctors practice will have a different protocol. For our practice you can email records to: Txurogynandlaser@tenethealth.com 28 cm fibroids are extremely rare. Most physicians would only see such cases a handful of times during their entire career. As a referral center we see and manage these cases frequently. Depending on the clinical scenario robotic myomectomy may or may not be the best management option.

@@DoctorRich some women tell me that their doctor found out that their one large fibroid is comprised of multiples after the myomectomy. Even on MRI, it’s difficult to discern the size of the discrete mass.

Can you talk more about the suspension you did to hold the bladder up?
@DoctorRich
@DoctorRich 3 года назад
Urogynecologists perform support procedures to treat and prevent prolapse. In the case of a benign hysterectomy a ligament suspension in performed by suturing the top of the vagina to the uterosacral ligaments. The linked video show an example of this procedure: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5lxAAM7D7oQ.html

I am likely needing this procedure due to years of pain.I have ovarian cysts as well as 3 fibroids.It is ruining my life!I'm in the process of trying to not be scared and just do it phase.Do people have to be put on hormones afterward?are their alternatives to that?I am very concerned about sexual function as well and this has already robbed me of that in alot of ways.Im scared it will change for the worse.Thanks.
@DoctorRich
@DoctorRich 2 года назад
Crystal: Thanks for subscribing. In a case such as this one should not need hormones if you preserve at least one ovary. However if both ovaries need to be removed, best available data indicates that estrogen replacement is safe for at least the first seven years of use (barring contraindications).
