Fred A. Leuchter, manufacturer of the Electric Chair, graphically explains what happens during execution, and casts doubts on the practicality and safety of other methods of execution, including the gas chamber . . .
Although the chair is a violent and potentially gruesome method of execution, they would never leave "fluids" on the floor in the event of a multiple execution (which hasn't happened in decades, if ever). The condemned wears an adult diaper in all executions for this reason.
how many people have suffered terrible deaths from prosecutors who accuse the wrong person and even manufacture evidence. they dont care if an innocent person dies as long as it makes them look like they getting the bad guys
Fred's electric chair in Tennessee, as originally constructed, was determined to be incapable of delivering the amps and volts advertised. It was measured by two electrical engineers during tests in 1994. One of them subsequently reconfigured the chair and its wiring to get it to sustain the necessary the necessary lethal volts and amps.
@@andystitt3887 That was the conclusion of the two electrical engineers who were well versed in the subject. One of them had built Arkansas second electric chair and serviced the chairs in Florida, Ohio and Virginia. Fred was a history major at Boston University.
The guy who altered the TN chair that Fred built was one sick puppy. Flew in just to watch an execution. He cared more about cooking the individual than executing them. Fred altered several states electric chairs and they worked just fine. Most all had the head and leg pieces replaced by Fred. His lethal injection machines used in MO and IL performed fine as well.
@@andystitt3887 absolutely correct. According to Ohm's Law, V = IR meaning, Voltage is the product of amperage (current) times resistance. For a given voltage, therefore, a person whose body offers a greater resistance will have less current flow through him than someone with a lower resistance. That being said, however, at the voltages typically employed for an execution (jolts of anywhere from 1750 to 2400 V), the relatively minor variability in human resistance from one person to the next should make a very negligible difference in the amount of current delivered. As long as contacts are good, and saline is employed, the current should be well in excess of a lethal amount. Leuchter's modification of having the return path of the current divide between both ankles is a good one, in that it helps ensure current will flow evenly through the trunk.
Maybe so, but it is one thing to talk dispassionately about the science of how electric chairs work, even to design and build the things; and quite another thing to actually throw the switch on somebody! I think the actual executioners themselves are more ruthless.
@ColeFrederick, I think that you have made the point that needs to be made. All that you need to do is tell them this little rhyme. You do the crime, You do the time. Also, They need to keep executions and news of the events of executions between the victim's and the murderer's families ONLY, and away from the newsmedias. People that see this that do not understand what events lead to these death executions like this cannot handle these kinds of events. - Dwight
The prison service must have been desperate to appoint someone who wasn't even a professional electrician to build and test their electric chairs. Actually Leuschke did make a good observation in the film: that in order for electrocution to cause a swift death, it needs to do great damage to the body.
Should be treated with the highest dignity because he's being executed and losing his life?! Are you crazy?? Someone who rapes, murders and some who have been put to death even ate their victims, you want them to be treated with dignity? Wow.
although Leuchter doesn't touch on it, one of the amendments in the US constitution outlaws cruel and unusual punishment. so Leuchter is making sure their punishment has to be legal in order for justice to be served
marksandsparks1 This is true. But I am wondering though what would make something "cruel and unusual/ unjust" But yeah I guess you don't want to mess with the constitution
+AtmosphericColor the 8th amendment is open to interpretation depending on the political flavour of the moment. currently as lethal injection drugs can't be sourced from Europe, the old fashioned ways are returning (electric, firing squad) to states. again it will be asked - are they quick to despatch convict? are they consistently applied? etc
It isn't about the criminal. It is about us as a society. It is important to treat everyone with as much dignity and civility as their behavior allows - even horrible people who do outrageously evil things. We don't drag people naked behind a cart while whipping them on their way to be broken on the wheel in the town square. Why? Because that would say something pretty bad about us if we would tolerate anyone being treated that way.
Well, my guess is the condemned would be more likely to feel the electricity. This may have been tried before, along with many different combinations on different kinds of animal flesh. I am guessing that around 2000-2640 VAC @ 10 amps seems to “work the best.”
Thank God he's not a doctor. I know it is pronounced differently, but to have Dr. Leuchter written on the side of the chair would be... actually kind of cool.
@crissy214 They do...the condemned prisoner is issued an adult diaper. In Great Britain, after a particularly grisly execution by hanging of a woman who may have been mestruating at the time, the practice of issuing a set of absorbant "knickers" was established. There is no easy or absolutely "clean" way of killing a human being.
Get long rubber gloves for the one removing executed man from electric chair so person don't have to touch baked flesh or body fluids and rubber boots for everyone removing prisoner from electric chair.
Remember Kiddies basic electricity its the AMPS that do the KILLING POWER not the VOLTAGE! Put a higher rated resistor network inline and watch the inmate cook!! 😎😎😎😎
@electroexecutoid So, all the juice thrown to Daryl Holton, wasn't enough to kill him? I think he died in the autopsy. Yeah, they should raise the current to 10 amps, and 2,500 volts that will be lethal.
@Sunduals "I can't hear a fucking thing this guy said" etc. Lucky for you. Fred Leuchter once turned up in court pretending to be a 'gas chamber expert'. He couldn't answer the most basic questions, and the judge described his knowledge as 'little better than a common tourist'. That's the kind of towering intellect you're not listening to.
Thousands of people make things that they know kill people. This guy is no different. He just makes stuff. At least his stuff is has only one purpose. What about a car manufacturer who puts a car on the road that he KNOWS has a serious fault and will kill people, and does, or a drug company that puts out drugs that kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people, and it's covered up. THEY are the bad guys.
Came for the "what about the victims" crowd who honestly believe that nobody has ever considered that thought and that society cares more for the rights of the condemned: Was repeatedly not disappointed. Nobody has forgotten the victims, if they had there wouldn't even be an execution. The humanity of an execution is mandated by the Constitution, not our own thirst for blood and vengeance. The fact that the condemned "doesn't deserve" a humane death is irrelevant, society doesn't have the right to knowingly and purposely torture someone to death or humiliate them in the manner that Leuchter speaks of. Get some new talking points folks.
Why don't we line up all the guards, and as the condemned walks by, have each guard punch him or her in the gut. Oh, and have the victim's family hit him or her in the head with a blackjack. Two things: 1. What if this person were actually innocent? Isn't it bad enough the state is going to take a life? 2. And what does it do for us? Do we exact our revenge by making ourselves look as bad as the murderer, whether that person is being executed, or someone in his or her stead is?
The most humane execution method is the gas chamber...strap them in ...shut door, pipe in outside air, reduce outside air gradually and replace with pure Nitrogen. Condemned goes to sleep and never knows what happened. Takes approximately 10-12 minutes. No pain! Cheap, too.
What in hell are you talking about? I NEVER once mentioned anything about the Jewish people. Never! The comment was about murderers and their just punishment...and that's it!
Paul spydar: I think we should have more "imaginative execution" after all, these human scumbags did some really bazaar things to their poor victums , I think we should show our imaginative ways and execute them in various deserving ways and have it telivised for all to enjoy. POP OPEN THE BOTTLE OF CHAMPAGNE AND TOAST TO THE WORLD BEING A BETTER PLACE
Electrocution is a bad and ridiculously elaborate method. As are most American methods. Hanging works just fine when done correctly as does a firing squad such as the Utah protocol. No need for the high possiblity for error the more elaborate the more can go wrong keep it simple.
@@andystitt3887 this is true however that's why it needs to be well rehearsed and planned for. Incompetant staff should be prevented from participation
@@andystitt3887 ideally a prison should have the same gallows for a long time. Rather than building a new one for every execution. I know when Maine had the death penalty there was only two gallows ever constructed for the several executions that were carried out at the Maine state prison after public hangings were discontinued. Weight and placement of knot are hugely important but whoever is overseeing this should be trained and experienced that's what I'm saying.
"Afforded the greatest dignity" you said. Exactly why are these individuals being put to death. I am pretty sure it is not for selling Girl Scout cookies without a license. Personally, I favor firing squad as it has been proven to be 100% effective. Long drop hanging is next in order of effectiveness.
if you read the old testament in the bibles they actually had the death penalty back then, if you were caught in an act of adultery (for example ) you were to be immediately stoned to death. The death penalty is a secular way of meeting out justice the condemned still has to answer for the crime when he or she stanfs in front of THE Holy Father who sees all and does not forget what you have done
Another prize example of a Holy Roller's anger at the rest of the world. The Muslims are like minded in Sharia law. Tell me, would it make you feel happy to see a few more stonings?
"(The condemned) who should be afforded the greatest dignity of all because he is losing his life"... What the FUCK? I don't even understand how he can say that muderers deserve dignity in death.
Josh Gellis yes, agreed. I kind of wonder if firing squad would just be better then the modern methods used. Cheaper, not really as messy, considering the circumstances.
What a load of shit! Execution costs many more times the cost of incarceration for life. The legal costs alone guarantee rhat. Then there is the fact that !any executioners commit suicide or develop mental health problems. Some never work again. So the financial and human cost of execution is massive. Then there is the common matter of miscarriage of justice. You are a mindless fuckwit.
I envy those lucky guards who get to strap an inmate into the chair and watch him/her fry. I'd love to know what it must feel like for the condemned, from the moment he/she is walked from the holding cell to the moment he/she see's the chair. Imagine what it would feel like being strapped in then having the face mask and electrodes attached. Though I wouldn't want it done to me in reality lol. I think this sentence should be carried out on offenders that are just a repeated burden to society as well.
O R google Allen Lee Davies, 3 real photo's of him still strapped in the electric chair after he was fried. I would like to print those photo's off, frame them then hang them in my little permanent mental ward.
O R You shouldn't lie. You haven't seen those photos. If you take a look on the death penalty information center you can keep up to date with all the upcoming executions. I don't think I'm tough at all, in fact i'm a wimp.
O R Yes correct I am a loser, wow you must be psychic, how to you do it? Also what sort of hobbies could you recommend for me? I enjoy cooking, especially lobster, mmm.....
