Well they barely do their jobs anyway. Congress is in many yrs(the least in a republican lead house) in session something like 130ish days a year. Most Americans work vastly longer hrs under strict control of regulatory standards and for a lot less $. I bet you would love to make $176,000 per year(196,000 for senators) to not do your job. They get August off. Which is one of the most stressful if not _the_ most stressful times for citizens. If that's not enough they have access to thousands of aids that do the vast majority of the work for officials. A lot of whom are just wind up dolls.

How about the Representatives not receiving their pay? From what I am hearing and seeing lately, many of these people are definitely "non-essential" government workers. Unfortunately, they do get paid even if there is a shutdown. Which may also account for why they don't care about a shutdown. It doesn't directly affect them.

We need a law that will lock them up in a room until they solve the shutdown. No bathroom break, no food or water until it is done. As long as it take. If America suffer they too need to suffer.
If you are reliant on the government for food or other necessities then “figuring out what will be disrupted and contacting your representative about it” will not help you. You need to stockpile an extra couple weeks of food, water, or medication and ration it. Do not expect the government to work it out quicker because you asked them to.

Bush had the war on terrorism, Obama inherited a recession, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Trump spent like a drunken sailor and added some 7 trillion dollars to the National debt. Biden inherited the pandemic. Obviously, there was more to these administrations...I just listed some of the big ticket items. Haley only pointed out the spending, she was deceptive in not naming the reasons for the spending. Making government smaller would only make our elected officials even more outnumbered and overwhelmed by lobbyists and monopolized interests. Corporate Industrial complexes are bigger and wealthier than any government. They control the laws and the government through the corporate industrial finance addictions that override any laws we have. Its so easy to catch and convict a low class murderer that kills you with a knife while you sleep but if your employers kill you by exposing you to some chemicals in your work environment or putting you through such stressful physical conditions that you develop medical problems not even the best doctors can identify or treat they'll probably go up a pay grade and thanks to those Trxmp tax cuts they won't have to pay taxes on it.

You bring up being a private and saving money like that is a huge achievement. Sure your wage is significantly smaller than the average American income. But the big difference being is that the goverment is paying for your housing/food/ even a uniform allowance. I couldnt imagine being in the military and NOT saving anything. Now imagine if one day your chain of command was like "hey sorry yall arent gonna get paid" and you lived out in town and didnt have access to a dining facility.
