WHAT Happens If the Moon Gets Out of Its Orbit? 

The moon is Earth's only friend. Yet-even though this relationship has existed for billions of years-the gap between us is widening. Someday, far in the future, we will be left alone. What happens to Earth when the moon recedes will not be pleasant. When it comes to the origins of friendship, the Earth-moon system is a great one. Four and a half billion years ago, when the solar system had just formed, it was still chaotic. The young Earth was still molten, and surrounded by dozens of smaller planets. One such object, roughly the size of Mars, crashed into Earth. The impact vaporized most of our planet's mass, sending it into orbit. Most of the rain falls back down, but some stays on top, eventually pooling and cooling into our moon. Without the moon, we might not be here. However, as the moon moves away, it loses its ability to balance the Earth's tilt, leaving our planet subject to the whims of other planets. In the far future, the concept of regular seasons will be nothing more than a historical footnote.
