Not only does the copier distort the copy. It also digitally saves all the copies of everything ever copied onto a hard drive. Plus it imprints address info onto the paper copy so authorities can track it back.

It’s a software thing. Sometime in the mid-90s, when color printing started getting cheap, all copier, printer and scanner manufacturers were required to have currency image detection built-in to their machines. If you have an old color scanner or printer you can try it, it won’t detect anything. Make sure you also have a crosscut shredder handy as well! 😵
Well from COPPA coming in, there might not even be any content creators left. And with youtubes new policy about deleting channels if they aren't commercially viable. So much for youtube I guess. Now I just watch some videos here and there. I'm no longer a content creator. Can't afford a $43,000 fine, just like most people can't.
You are correct about what part is the "problem". Some of those little circles are arranged in a very specific pattern with relationships between dots that triggers the protection. It's called the "Eurion constellation": en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EURion_constellation
If Europe got their hands in this sort of technology, they could print all the money they wanted and become the richest continent in the world. The US had to stop this man.
@@tone8301 If it's a newer scanner, then you should run into the same issue.. Not sure if you take a scanner that has been updated. I know the scanners from the early 90s could do it no problem, but the resolution wasn't as good as today's scanners, and hence the copy wasn't so good.
That was really interesting. I never imagined that some printers might have that facility. A few years ago I was working on a bar at our village fair. I turned up for work to find three photocopied 50 euro notes had been taken. They actually realised the first one was a fake, but didn't want to upset the person passing the money (a woman) so she return on two further occasions! I told them just to keep it and refuse to deal with them, and then call the Gendarmes. She didn't return, probably not wanting to chance her luck any more! When I was a Police Officer in the UK, I got called to a nightclub to take possession of some photocopied £5 notes. I couldn't believe they had been taken as they weren't even colour copies. However, I realised in the dark, that wouldn't be picked up.

Years ago, some employees of ours tried using some high- end equipment in our office that we used to make plates for offset printing- we discovered copies of $20 bills. They were fired.
Years ago out of curiosity, I did try that at my workplace. Of course things went really wrong. An alarm was sent immediately to the computer maintenance service while the copier screen was displaying images of different notes and buzzing a continuous alarm. After the operation, the was copier definitively blocked. Even after many restarts it still displayed the notes on its screen and was permanently blocked. I had to call the computer maintainer who restarted the copier through a specific procedure. He was having a lot of suspicions about me. I was really ashamed. Do not try this at your workplace if you do not want to be fired.

if it is the 'copier' smartly detecting the dots, it shouldnt affect older purely optical photocopier, but there may be other tricks in the pattern to spoil pure optical copies?

Careful trying to copy money. Some photocopiers detect when it is making copies of money, and it disables itself. I know of a machine that, upon detecting money, it gives itself a “time-bomb”, and after a certain amount of time, it gives an error code. The error code can’t be reset, nor can you find that error in any service manual. So, you call up a dealership, and they’ll inform you that you’ve copied money. Thereby, sending you a massive repairbill… That’s common among larger copy machines
Most interesting and useful comment in this video. It is a pity that those who implement these "time-bombs" in photocopiers do not want to take into account that money can always be photocopied just for experimentation, curiosity or fun to play certain board games (like Monopoly), just in a didactic way (like in this video for example). But It is clear that if something is illegal, it is better not to do it even if the intention is not to commit a felony.

In Australia, there was a delay in getting colour printers and photocopiers due to treasury regulations which banned unapproved colour reproduction equipment. I think part of the deal was firmware based protection. Apparently colour printers print tiny dots which carry the serial number of the printer according to another RU-vidr.
UK here. We used to photocopy one side of a £10 note, cut it out to look like a real one and then leave it on the floor in front of the shop counter to watch people's reactions. Some people are amazingly honest and would point it out to staff immediately, others are so sneaky and would pretend to be tying their laces or fiddling in a bag, sneak the one-sided tenner into their bag.
As shown in this video, photocopiers seem to have a software that prevents direct copying of bank notes. Here in Germany however, the law allows copying bank notes under the restriction that the copy is scaled up or down a specified amount. E.G for advertising or such. We tested this in the office I worked for a few years ago. To my astonishment, we could copy a Euro-note scaled up 200%, than copy the copied (upscaled) note while scaling down to 50% and ended with a copy (of a copy) of exact the original size. Suffice to say that this item has landed in the shredder immediately.
The dots are probably one of the worst-kept anticounterfeiting secrets on the planet. It's called the "EURion constellation" (because it was originally developed by the Europeans). The printer firmware recognizes the pattern and causes things like what you see in the video.
@@almostfm yes, it's a bad security system, but they are many more layers of security, color shifting effect on several places, transparent thingy and most importantly, a whole layer of detail than can only be seen using UV light.

The key thing is that there are a number of different security features of varying degrees of difficulty and secrecy. And the EURion constellation serves the same purpose as a fence around a building-to keep the "hey, let's try this!" person from being successful.

This protection has been around for a long time. Instead of the striping, many copiers will just produce black in the area where the bill resides so you get a black rectangle. If you set the zoom level on the copier to reduce or enlarge, you will get a normal copy but, of course, it will be instantly recognizable as a copy.
I remember one of large office MFP's I used just threw an error message if it detected currency being scanned. And detection by visible note features is actually pretty lame, because there are features unnoticable to humans that device can use. One of those is a near-invisible pattern in the paper itself - detection by that method would be impossible to cheat by covering small part of the note.

I don't remember in which country... But there are bills that instead of censoring it prints a URL that goes to a page saying that copiying money is ilegal
