This video should be on blast somehow - not sure many people know this! I ran this little experiment myself on my Lexus GS350. I had always wondered if it worked. So, like you, on a quiet back road with no traffic, I pulled the e-brake button and it beeped and actuated the e-brakes. Like you said, you have to hold the button for the amount of time you want or need braking, and it disengages the second you let it go. It's great to know this option exists, and I don't know of any owners are ever told this when purchasing a vehicle with it. Great video man!

I drive a 2016 Mondeo (German Fusion) and the other day while parking I was a bit distracted because I was on the phone (via bluetooth speaker of course) and engaged the parking brake a little too early. Car stopped hard. It threw me into the seatbelt. Coffee fucked my pants up. After I stopped being pissed I wondered what would happen at higher speeds and there you are uploading this video. Interesting stuff. Keep it up!

alot of manufacturers have this as a safety feature. in VAG cars (as an example) the button applies braking to all corners, when going at speed. this is for example if the driver is having a stroke, the passenger can grab the steering wheel and pull on the e brake button to bring the car to a stop. even the abs system works if it's needed, making it safe to do this on snow etc.

It is also very interesting to use the electronic parking brake on snow. When the brake is applied rear wheels slips, in that moment the control unit realises it and the break is automatically released and if you still hold the button it is reapplied again. This keeps happening again and again, so it is like ABS but much slower because the process takes about 2-3 seconds.

My personal take is the E-brake actuates an electric motor to hold the callipers down. The regular/service brakes by the foot is hydraulic operation, and the E-brake is electric, so the systems are redundant for when the hydraulics fail so the electric actuated E-brake can bring you to a safe stop.
@beni22sof
@beni22sof Год назад
Not necessarily... The electric brake is not as powerful as the hydraulic one. It may help to reach a stop, but it is not guaranteed.

This was actually something I did wonder about these electronic Parking brakes, so this was very good to know since most new cars comes with this feature and I have been a bit both wondering about it and kinda been a bit negative to make such thing digital as I don't really like all things to be electric these days. My theory of how it work is well it is like before a separate wire as before, only different is that it is a electric motor that pulls it now and not the handle you once pulled manually, which s the sound you hear. But thank you for this video and continue to make these "WHILE driving" kind of videos.

I have the 2016 ford fusion and what is happing is these systems are independent it has both brake like regular car and rear has an electric component that engage the piston to stop the car it only works as long as you hold switch once you let go it let's it go. also if you have parking brake on and you take off it will also release the brake.
@mjc250
@mjc250 7 лет назад
The parking brakes are together with the regular brakes in the rear. An electric portion inside the caliper applies the rear brakes to stop the vehicle. It is operating the normal brakes pads against the rotors. Besides more brake wear in the rear as the rear brakes are solely stopping the vehicle, shouldn't hurt anything.

hey dude, nice video. like the details, and commitment(smell). I have a 13 fusion, se, fwd, and can tell you, after just servicing my brakes...the backs look a little funny. there are electrical actuators on the rear calipers, to manually squeeze the rear brakes. if you're going straight, it only seems to use the rear brakes. if you try and drift, I think it kicks in the fronts, to keep that from happening. nice to know it kicks the brake lights on too.

The old simple mechanical cable setup makes me feel safer than the new e-brake setup when it comes to a fully redundant and dead simple emergency brake setup. But the e-brake does seem to be a separate system for the most part. Just relies on electricity and algorithms to work.

India, we usually get trimmed down variants of International cars with smaller less powerful engines and stripped down features. I asked Ford India and they said they strip off features because of insanely high taxes in India, so to keep the price low they have to give smaller engines and remove extra features like productivity screen. The awesome Ford and Chevy trucks are not even herd of here. (I love the F150)

That's actually really cool. My only gripe with the new electronic system is that the parking brake on my old '88 Accord is separate from my actual brakes. So when I blew my brake lines in front I could still get home with the e-brake. I'm doubting you can do that with this system, since I'm guessing the "parking brake" just uses the actual brakes by applying pressure to the master cylinder. Thanks for the vid! =]

What happens if you put a car into reverse while driving forward?
@myar4931
@myar4931 7 лет назад
At least with a mechanical transmission, you'll grind your gears _really_ bad. The faster you're moving (by that I mean the faster your drive shaft and the faster your crankshaft, and by extension the gears within your transmission are moving), the more the gears will grind, perhaps to the point of destroying your transmission. This is because of two reasons. One, the sheer size of the reverse gear, or lack thereof. It's tiny and fragile compared to the other gears, which is why it's ill-advised to abuse it too much, as well as why you can't accelerate very fast in reverse. Reason two is because the reverse gear doesn't have a synchronizor ring like the other gears have. The synchronizor ring is used to make sure that, when engaging gears in the transmission, the gears are rotating at the same speed so that they can slot together smoothly. Without this ring, shifting into reverse while moving results in jamming a moving gear into a still one at high speed. Of course, this is all speculation, as I've never tested any of this, and I'm no expert on transmissions, and I don't know how this would differ if attempted in an automatic transmission, but in any case, you should never shift into reverse unless the car is at a complete stop, for the reasons listed above.
@myar4931
@myar4931 7 лет назад
*manual transmission, not mechanical, sorry
@Robinius95
@Robinius95 7 лет назад
For my 2006 Ford Mondeo with an automatic transmission there is an electronic lock. So above 5km/h I can shift in reverse, but it will stay in Neutral. Hope that answers your question ;)
@shubhamsaxena508
@shubhamsaxena508 7 лет назад
it wont apply while you a driving forward
@HaouasLeDocteur
@HaouasLeDocteur 7 лет назад
Actually, Mia Ray, it's not the gears themselves that you will be grinding, it's the shifting sleeve's grooves with the gear's hub teeth that will grind. There is no synchroniser on the reverse gear. The shifting sleeve will not lock to the reverse gear. If you somehow manage to lock everything up, the transmission could be destroyed and the engine will definitely stall.

I have a 2017 Volvo XC60 which has an electronic parking brake. If it's applied whilst driving braking will be applied to all wheels, as if the foot brake were pressed. You can also pull away with the handbrake applied in both forward or reverse and the handbrake is automatically released when the accelerator pedal is pressed. The manual says that the handbrake can be used as an emergency brake. As with your Ford Fusion the brake lights also illuminate when the car is in emergency braking mode.

Some cars (this varies widely) use a separate set of brake pads exclusively for the handbrake (I know E39 BMW 5 Series does) These are in behind the rear brake disc and run on their own part of the disc. When you stop and park the car and apply the handbrake, the pads just squeeze and thats it. That area of the disc never gets pads running on it full time as they're always retracted during normal driving. What a BMW mechanic told me once, was to do about 15mph and engage the handbrake briefly a couple of times until the car stops. This scours rust and crap off the handbrake area of the disc. Once every 3 months or so.

Good stuff. This answers to the people who says things against these cool features. As an example, when someone asks isn't this a dangerous feature where I don't know whats gonna happen if someone accidentally press this button while I am driving. Firstly, breaking happens only if someone pulls this button where a press on the button is used to release the break. (V r safe). Secondly, the way how it reacts vary based on the current speed. Most importantly it keeps on activating the break only if someone is keep on pulling the button while you are driving on an higher speed. This is another smart release in the automotive industry.

Nice vid but I have to ask the question 'Is there any need ever to use the button?' what I mean is in the old system a cable went to the back breaks and was independent of what happens when you press the peddle which is hydraulic, therefore if you suffered an hydraulic fail such as a total loss of fluid you could bring the car to a stop with the cable system, is the button independent? Perhaps a question for the manufacturers.

Put foot on break and place car in drive. pull handbreak up and release foot break. that allows you to steer car where you want to go. Release handbreak slow to allowed to move but not all the way. Hold handbreak so the car does not go to fast down hill. traction control helped well going down hill in snow. then relese handbreak. I was woundering if this is possable to to with a ford mondeo titanium with automatic gearbox.

I have a citroen ds4 and in the manual it says the parking brake will not function in motion unless you pull and hold the switch, when I assume it will brake as long as you pull it. But it functions differently to yours (perhaps because yours is an auto, mine manual) in that to release the brake you simply drive off as normal, you feel a slight resistance and release as you do so, but the brake automatically releases. You learn to factor this in to make the release as smooth as possible. You can also pull the switch to release it, but you have to have your foot on the brake pedal at the same time which is a bind, so I never do this. To be honest I'm glad I switched to an electric parking brake, because I had got into the habit of using slight application of the manual handbrake to bring the car to a stop the final few metres, which is bad news for the rear brakes!

Cool. Love these videos! I wonder if the power lift gate button on the key fob of say an Escape/Edge/Explorer for instance will let it open at speed?

This Fusion also has a system that holds the brake while you are stopped at the red light. When you stopped on the red light just pull on the switch and release the foot from the brake pedal. The car will apply the brakes and you don't have to step on the foot pedal during a long red light. When the light goes green just apply the throttle and the car releases the brakes and stop lights on the back Very NEAT FEATURE :) I use it a lot in my 2013 Fusion. Give it a TRY! Love your videos BTW! Keep up the good work!

Going to check that out on my 16` - every other car I have is a manual and I often toss the Fusion into neutral at long lights.

OK we need a video demonstrating that feature :) so you basically just pull on the lever while stopped at the red light. Than release the brake and then when light is green accelerete normally. Give it a try. The car has to be driven in excess of 30mph before that so it knows you are not in the parking lot trying to normal park it.

what would happen if you pressed a pedal doing the same in the explorer?

That would be a cool feature for drifting just a flick of a button to control the e brak. Some electronic e brakes take a bit long to engage tho

Interesting. In my car, a 2017 VW Tiguan, I need to have my foot on the brake to apply the electronic parking brake. It also disengages as soon as I push the gas pedal. When "autohold" is engaged it will automatically engage or disengage the parking brake as I come to a stop in traffic. It will not engage when driving.

Michi Scholl same thing on my 08 Passat. VW must have a safeguard or something in place to keep you from butchering the E-brake

In 2012 Citroen C5 holding the electronic parking brake lever when driving activates an emergency brake sequence to stop the car as fast and safe as possible.

In my 2009 Tiguan user manual it says that if I need emergency brake I should pull and keep pulling the parking brake, just like in the AutoVlog video.

I know this is an older video. But as i just bought a "newer" car for the first time in my life with an electronic parking brake (an rs3), i skimmed though the manual and this is absolutly what its supposed to do and not harmful (aside from brake wear). The park brake acts as an Emergency brake while drving. the Park brakes dont engage at all until you stop completly. It Uses the nomal brakes an performs a complete emergency stop as long as its held.
