And here are the results of placing a double screened dividing board into a beehive. With 62 of our hives split using this method, all 62 of them, that 100%, formed emergency cell queens proving the efficiency and easy of using this method. I hope you will try this out for yourself. Thanks for watching. God's peace to all.

I'm starting my hive in a few days. I've been watching so many videos and I know I just need to start. I plan on spending as little money as possible by using free material to design something that resembles what I've seen. So all I now need, is the starter wax for the frames and I've got my first ever hive. Sharing this to encourage you to just start and see what happens. 😃

I have a small bee yard, with only 6 hives currently. My goal this year is to have zero swarms escape by splitting them as needed, and if they make swarm cells, to bank some queens in nucs. I'm still pretty new, so I have a lot to learn, but at least I've learned to keep them alive. Mites are bad up here in VA if you don't treat, so I have an OAV gun and it works well. Guys around me trying to go treatment free lose most or all of their hives every year. I've lost none in 3 years, which is pretty cool! I think the screen method will work out, based on this follow up video. Thanks for all your helpful videos! I've been binge watching.

I always learn from and enjoy your vidoes! Twith the abundance of bees and a lot of brood into the top box with the old queen and fewer bees and brood? hank you for sharing your knowledge and experience! I am wondering why you don’t put some bees and a frame of brood from the the bottom box? God bless you and your bees!
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Год назад
Because there were so many bees in both the top and bottom box, I want the field bees from the top box to return to the original hive after I move the top box away. This helps reduce the chance of the old queen swarming by stealing her workers and helps the bottom box hive bring in nectar. My main concern about keeping bees is honey production. Thank you for doing this follow up video. Because of your last video, I made a double screen board and split a hive on Friday. The queen was on the bottom in mine. Is there any reason to move her to the top? I plan to look for queen cells next week. Pretty exciting to learn a new method. I hope it works out. I also made a traditional split, pulling 3 frames of brood and a lot of bees from a hive that was huge and the queen and a bunch of bees from a hive that was making swarm cells. Made for a really big split, a deep plus a medium nuc, but that's good, because they will fill up quickly, and will probably go into full sized boxes within 2 weeks. A good start to the season! Thanks again for your great videos and your help.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Год назад
The reason I like her in the top is because I will move her from the original location to help reduce the chances of her swarming later in the season. If she is moved, it steals all her field bees as they go back to the original location. God's peace Tony. Mr. Ed

My guy crushed so many bees at 11:59 😢 they make bee brushes for a reason also you can set the super on one corner and slowly slide it into place. That’s how I do mine I minimize the little bee deaths as much as possible.

Hello Judi, and thank you so much for wanting to support the monks and their works, for the blessings you gave, and for taking the time to watch this video. St. Joseph Abbey, a Benedictine monastery, is located about 50 miles north of New Orleans, Louisiana, and is home to about 34 monks ranging from the age of 27 to 84. They do have a web page, and the address is: saintjosephabbey.com if you'd like to find out more about it. Also, it is the largest seminary college in the United States. Of course they happily accept all donations as this is their primary source for sustaining their lifestyle, but they also have several cottage industries that contribute to their well being as well, and these you will discover if you look at the web page. Any contribution goes into a general fund, however if you specify "Abbee Honey" on the donation, the funds will be directed to that department, and this help me tremendously to continue the work I do as a volunteer for the monks. Again, thank you so much for your support and your blessing. Also, I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. By the way, I post a new video every Friday morning, and I look forward to hearing from you again soon. God's peace. Mr. Ed

Hey Mr. Ed! I've learned so much by watching your videos. We installed a double screen board and was pleasantly surprised one week later with multiple emerging queen cell capped. That was 4/1. Checked today to see if those splits have mated queens, eggs, or larvae and there was nothing. How long should I wait for the mated queen to show eggs or larvae? Also, after said time, should I combine the split back to the original hive? We're in a nectar flow now and I only saw one drone today. When we did the split.....there were many. Thanks so much for all that you do. God Bless you Mr. Ed!
@JeffHorchoff

One thing the bee have taught me, patience. I give the bees 4 weeks after I find the emergency cell, by that time you should see brand new larva in the cells. If at that point I see no new larva, and out of 80 some odd splits this year there were none, thank you Jesus, I will add another frame of brood from one of my old queens to let them try again. Then the whole process starts again. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Carolyn. Mr. Ed

You have to ask that question in about 6 weeks. It's at that point my old queens are most likely to swarm as their hives have swollen in numbers. As long as I keep ahead of them by giving them room, by adding another super, they will not swarm. I track all my old queens so I know which hives they are in. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Just make sure your box has the correct number of frames in it so the bees won't draw wacky comb. Also, you don't really need to "see" your queen. As long as you find new brood, you have a queen in the box. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Nola. Mr. Ed

Jeff, thank you for your videos, Question, I have a brood box that is now Queenless, not sure why. the bees made 2 emergency cells , sealed and both were nice formed cells of good size. ... I inspected the 2 cells 15 days later, I found both cells were opened on the side /middle of the cell, and after several inspections over a week no queen found Why would the bees build nice sealed cells then open the cell from the side middle and destroy a queen when they need a queen.? Any thoughts
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Год назад
I think you have a queen in your box and you just have not seen her. Typically, it is the queen who chews a hole in the cell to kill the other queen that is in there. I would look for new brood, either eggs or uncapped larva, in another week or so if the queen can't be found. That is the simplest way of knowing you have a queen without spotting her yourself. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Jeff, please explain. You put a super on top of the brood box but you didn’t put a Queen excluder between the two. Won’t your Queen lay in the super without the excluder in place?
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff Год назад
I don't use excluders. It matters not to me if the queen gets into the honey super and lays. Because I run all deeps in our hives, if the queen does go up there and lay, I simply transfer a frame of honey from the box below for a frame of brood that was in the honey super. It's just my way of doing it. Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them.
