Is it wise to turn off the ESP stability control? Steve Sutcliffe proves even a Lamborghini Gallardo can spin easily.
SUBSCRIBE to Autocar: ru-vid.com...
You are driving along, and it seems like a fun idea to reach for your car's ESP stability control button, so it's just you in control of machine. But is it a wise idea? Steve Sutcliffe decided to find out, driving the hugely grippy and stable, four-wheel drive 2013 Lamborghini Gallardo supercar. Despite its amazing performance figures, he found that even at moderate motorway speeds, an awful lot could go wrong, very quickly indeed.
Autocar, the world's leading motoring magazine and website, delivers industry-leading news, the most in-depth car reviews and opinion from our team of experts. Our presenters include some of the world's top motoring journalists who have unrivalled access to the world's fastest, rarest, most exotic and most exciting cars on some of the world's best roads and race tracks.

All stability control is traction control, but not all traction control is stability control. ESC uses some of the same, if not all of the same, depending on the implementation, of a traction control system.

This is why professional racing is so overwhelming to 97% of people because everyone takes for granted ABS, traction control and steering assist, so going as fast as possible without all these, and using manual gear shifts every second, requires focus, multitasking and practice that is second to none

Not more responsive, more uncontrollable unless in the hands of an actual trained professional driver.
@ryfodrea
@ryfodrea 8 лет назад
It makes the throttle a bit less responsive when you accelerate from a stop to avoid wheel spin. It helps you get a better start if you're racing... but once ur going, I think traction control is better to have on because it also makes sure you dont over do the steering.
@user-rl4go8lo4m
@user-rl4go8lo4m 8 лет назад
Doesn't make a difference to pulling away, traction control slows the wheels down, slowing the car down, with it off you just spin the wheels with barely any traction, but the gallardo comes with launch control which allows some wheelspin but controls it to gain maximum grip.

Just let go the wheel when things get hairy? It is rather 'against every sense possible' yes, but since way before electronic stability control, it has been one of the more effective ways of saving it. The trick is to know when to let go, and when to get in charge again, and the problem with that, is if you know stuff like that, you most likely wouldn't have lost control in the first place.
@neinerstrechtnicht6465

@RysieX267
@RysieX267 4 года назад
@@MrTacticalGiant I don't know if it would actually work in normal circumstances or in a FWD car, but this technique is often used in drifting. They tend to turn the wheel, accelerate hard, release it briefly (the car will basically countersteer by itself) and further control it from that point. Then you can lessen the turn to slide more or leave it where it is, and the car will either straighten out (if you straighten the weel in time) or slide the other way (if you don't). From my personal experience, you will just feel when it's time to straighten the wheel, it simply takes some practice. Just be sure not to try it out on a public road, and remember that you have to control the gas pedal as well ;)
@iant720
@iant720 9 лет назад
Great video, I had no idea stability control worked that well. Also you demonstrated perfectly how mid engine cars tend to just spin. I had a Pontiac Fiero in high school. A couple times I've lost control dodging deer/snow etc... Yet every time the car stayed in its lane and just spun like this^. It never veered off like fwd or rwd cars. Also people... Lift off oversteer is real, be careful.
@allrock1238
@allrock1238 8 лет назад
Should be titled "What happens when you turn the stability control system off" (never do this ) Traction control systems are designed prevent excessive wheel spin on acceleration and there are a few situations (honestly never encountered in a car like this) like climbing a grade in wet snow or a surface like mud where a skilled driver could make progress only with the traction control off or set to allow more slip (and the smarts to not loop the car into solid objects by controlling wheel spin and holding reasonable speed) most of the deaths in older supercars are caused by the exact issues shown above and even a highly skilled driver can not react and counter the issues of physics that electronic stability control system can handle ,(unless the car had method of side to side independent brake control with abs that the driver had direct reactive control over and I still drought they would be fast enough) ,, in truth the future will see 4 wheel reactive torque vectoring control systems (some of the 4 motor electric cars like the Rimac concept one already showcase them,, because these systems don't have to pulse control the brakes applying instant precise counter torque with an electric motor they can counter react faster "and" also change a cars "dynamic road handling response as well" the only time one would turn stability control off is when one had had the "intent" to demonstrate some skilled showcase driving that required an intentionally unstabilized car in a controlled environment. (a race track, not on public roads)

@thaneonyou
@thaneonyou 8 лет назад
+Allrock123 i agree, most of the time etc and esc is confused for some reason and on a good note most cars that alow you to turn of esc it is only turning off etc and the only way to disable esc is pulling the relays for the abs system witch you should never do unless it is in a shop and you are testing things.
@allrock1238
@allrock1238 8 лет назад
There are evolutions to ESC that run well above the use of brakes ,, into whats called "intelligent Torque Vectoring" these systems can apply power or braking force dynamically over a hundred times a second,(usually using an electric motor driving each wheel) simply search rimac torque vectoring, give the car the ability to sense road position in relation to other cars and objects on might collide with these systems can use power to spin the car on its access and use vectored power even at extreme angles.

P.s: Traction control is used to enhanced driver control as throttle input applied is mis-matched to road surface conditions (due to varying factors) being unable to manage applied torque. Key part is 'manage applied torque), which means it is only active under acceleration.

No it doesn't. 2005 STI's do not have any electronic aids apart from ABS. The closest to TC you have is the Auto setting on the DCCD since it varys torque bias front to rear. Sometimes a car will snap straight on it's own just because things went correctly for it to do so, not because an electronic aid kicked in. As long as the front wheels remain straight they will drag the back end in so long as you're not going really fast.

if you've ever drifted you'd know that letting go of your wheel will always straighten out the car unless you are past a holdable drift angle, it is simply the path of least resistance for the car to take. and that comment about not turning of your trac control at the end is BS. my car for example, a 2012 subaru legacy GT, has one of the worst traction control systems I've ever seen and it robs me of the control i need to save the car in very slick conditions, on dry pavement its reactions work well enough but in the slick stuff my TCS can be legitimately dangerous. if your car is "cheap" your TCS probably is too.

AWD, Automatic trans and Stability Controls make these cars easy to drive for anyone. Robs them of that tactile feel that makes a great sports car, but a weapon in an inexperienced drivers hands.

Its definitely not a bad system to have, honestly... but if you dont see traffic stopping ahead... or if youre following too closely to not have time to respond... then you deserve to crash. You need better driver training if thats how you respond in a crisis

This demonstrate only how bad cars are engenieered today. I'm an huge fan of the gallardo but those cars are conceived only on electronic safety and whitout it you can't drive it properly. The Ferrari F40 (1987) was and is one of the most evil cars on the planet but if a good driver tries the same manuever it doesn't go in a round dance.

cutting the power or braking would probably had been worse due to weights transfer but it's still noticeable a little delay in the last countersteer. I don't know if it was on purpose or not. Remains the fact that this car is almost undriveable near it's limits without it's electronic guardian angel

@mpr330cd
@mpr330cd 10 лет назад
of course it would... The F40 is purpose built to close corners with the rear end . But if you are a good driver (steel balls also needed) you can control it, without electronic gizmos interfering. With the Lambo you can't. That's the difference

The Fast Furious Guy Died because the Carrera GT (does not has ESP) Idiots Can Criticize ESP for making you 1 sec slower on the Track (Fuc***** the One Second time penalty) I would Rather not be Burned to death ESP is simply STUNNING and many of us are here today because ESP Works even when we Don't realize it.

SuperNiceguy60 First of all, for a german company not to fit traction control on a super car is stupid. Second, there is no side effect adding one so why risk a lawsuit. Third, the Carrera GT has a big ass TC OFF button on the dash so it has one. photos.stuttcars.info/upload/2013/02/09/carrera-gt-59-copyright-porsche.jpg

sunnyjason 1. It saves weight, which was the main stake of the GT 2. It adds weight and corrupts feedback through the steering/butt. 3. TC is not the same as ESP. The GT was always meant to be the hairy-chested Porsche of old, which they succeeded in. Its a GREAT car because it lacks ESP.

I kinda think the autocar host should already know that rack and pinion steering cars (as a unintended side effect) auto correct a slide, or fishtail. You can literally let go of the steering wheel, and it seemely magically does the right thing, and the car straightens out. The front wheels are simply facing the direction that provides the least resistance, which happens to be in the direction of the mass of the vehicle, which is usually straight.

Yes, forget the brakes in this case. And Some gallardo's are stick while others are E-Gear, so I guess with an E-gear just flick both paddles to get into neutral.
