@Omnipresent Spirit this album is great, is it yours? Btw, How are the DeadHeads? I'm from Peru, and I've only known one in my whole life, it was impressive, he was a backpacker
@@lutfial6207 its maybe a B minor pentatonic lick? I don't know I can't see but he is raking the strings as well as bending half bends with full whole step bends to get that scream off the pickups
I think that ppl in the guitar community, (some ppl) have the contempt for Mayer that they do because deep down they know he's that good, but because he went the route of radio pop and not blues in the way that the greats did, they consider him a waste. Because he seldom shows his blues prowess, since his music is largely pop and not blues. People don't want to be associated with his music in the way that some men don't want to be associated (or are too proud to admit they like it) with say a band like Backstreet Boys or Nsync in the way they do with SRV or Hendrix. Mayer put himself outside the blues rock category by playing to the Backstreet Boys and Nsync crowd, the women, basically. That being said, I don't care what ppl say. I like John's music. What I simply do is cherry pick songs from each record and make my own mix. And I simply pass over the songs that are too bubble gum poppy.
Henry Lozano yup this is exactly what I wanted to express. It’s almost like they feel spurred. How dare a commercially successful pop artist be a better player than me. I actually felt the same thing when I was like 12 years old and saw him casually shred on The Chapelle Show.
In my opinion there isn't another person on the planet who could write songs , sing and play guitar like John Mayer. People are good at one or two but not all three.
metalheadblues I think hes a good songwriter, especially musically. But lyrically he isnt at the same level as his playing. Still love the guy, just my opinion
Nick C Just Listen To “stop this train”, “3x5”, “badge And gun”, “my stupid mouth”, slow dancing In a Burning Room“... he definitelly has incredible lyrics, despite these last releaseds and The super pop stuff.
@@victorleite8827 I've listened to his whole discography, I dont think hes a bad songwriter, just comparative to the level his playing is at, its not the same. He can play like Clapton but he cant write like Dylan
I must be absolutely clue less. I just don't get all the hype surrounding Mayer. There's no denying he's an excellent guitarist. But the best. Over and above guys like Clapton. It may be because none of Mayer's songs have grabbed my attention. But I'll keep on listening and hope to catch up on everybody else soon.
I saw a little smirk of delight on Clapton's face when Mayer started playing which made me think "Hey if Mayer can impress Clapton, then I don't think Mayer gives damn about what the rest of us think". I know I wouldn't if I were him. I now refer you to the youtube video in which Clapton talks about Mayer being a master guitarist. If my only accomplishment as a guitarist was to play with and have a legend like Clapton enjoy and acknowledge my guitar playing, my life would be complete. In fact, I would trade it for all the fame of the world, just not my soul. I going to check out your patreon page now.
Mr Guitar Pilgrim, I love your "show", cause thats what it is, an amazing guitar show where one can learn really interesting advanced ideas without stopping to name every fret or string......Thank you!!!
Hands down to the greatest guitar hero of the 21th century. He certainly has inspired many people to play the guitar also the acoustic guitar, because of his tone, hability, feeling...
Possibly the single most impressive breakdown of a solo on RU-vid... and Lord knows I've seen 'em all. Done with master skill and GP's characteristically unassuming style.
Umm. So many examples of better playing but Jimmy Page, Royal Albert Hall 1970. SMOKES John Mayer. How you idolize this meat and potatoes guitar player named Mayer? You poor simple bastard.
@@pappyodanial Things in art are subjective. This is not a formula where 2 + 2 = 4. In music it is virtually laughable to think there is a "best". "Favorites" is all your opinion & no one can argue. If you watch our Guitar Pilgrim very much you will realize how much he values "feel" & "style". I do too. He has done videos on Page BTW. I happen to love Page as well. But I happen to agree that John Mayer has fantastic feel (as does our Pilgrim). Until you are playing onstage with Clapton your comment maybe should have been "This is good but I prefer Page." The next guy will tell you if you aren't a shredder you are no good. All subjective man.😊
@@pappyodanial The fact that you mentioned that performance in your cesspool of a comment is so aggravating, because you're absolutely right about it, but you ruined it by being a dick so congrats
It’s nice to see that a master teacher like yourself takes time out to reveal and demonstrate why John Mayer is one of the greatest guitar players of our generation. I’ve done session work in a recording studios and I’ve hundreds of live performances so I know that you make a profound point - with enough takes in Recording sessions licks can be perfected but what reveals a truly exceptional artist is what they can do on the spot in a live performance - John Mayer delivers 5 star creativity and pure genius in live performances. Thank you for dissecting all the great talents and influences the John Mayer has perfected to create something transcendent.
Pilgrim you are the pinnacle of guitar instructors/teachers on the internet these days. I've learned more from your tutorials than from any other website. And you're right, John Mayer is a great guitarist! Clapton knows Mayer's capabilities, that's why he's there. Also, I love the way Clapton stays humble while others take the spotlight. There's a reason why he's on every stage there's a jam amongst the greats.
Man, I've caught a handful of your videos and they're so good. You're obviously a great player, but the joy you get out of it is what I'm after. Keep it up, these are wonderful.
Breaking a string sucks and is awesome at the same time just keep playing anytime that happens then if guy you ever gig you can atleast finish the song!
I've always felt this solo from John was amazing I've been coming back to it for years, thanks for breaking it down and giving it the respect it deserves
I have thought FOR YEARS that this was one of the greatest solos of all time. Tried to learn it about 8 or 9 years ago. Thanks for going through it and appreciating it!!
What an awesome video - thank you. I've loved this solo for years, and it's so cool to see a player as good as you breaking it down and watch you just enjoying the great licks! Imagine being able to roll out a solo like that off the cuff... JM's blues playing is as good as it gets.
This might be the most ‘get to the point’ thing on RU-vid atm. I’m a fairly decent musician, so if I want to learn something this is ALL want to see. “Show me, clearer so I can feel it and see how it makes sense”. I can’t be assed with tabs, or “like me” bullshit. I just want someone to explain it to me briefly... play once slow, once fast, show me what makes it sound like JM technique - awesome. Job done... Please, dude keep this up. This is an awesome thing 🤙
You are my favorite Guitar Guru, you explain it so well and you know all your stuff without a load of waffle, precise and to the point. I learn slow but properly from you. Cheers.
Thank you for making this. Love your enthusiasm, I feel the exact same way about literally every point, and feels great to hear someone else echo that. You're a fantastic player yourself!
I love your enthusiasm! John Mayer is a genuine guitar legend. His phrasing and expression is just phenomenal. My favourite 3 legends to attempt to emulate are him, Hendrix and SRV. Clearly, I love that element of blues they all share. So good. Cheers!
I suggest you go with why Guitar Pilgrim kicks ass. On second thought, you should leave this one for when you celebrate 1 million subscribers. You deserve that!
You continue to teach me new things every single time. This time it was hitting all strings (muting all but the note you're after) to generate a bit more "grit" to a lick. Yes, it's harder then it looks! And damn, Pilgrim, you play frickn fine! Brilliant playing on this,. Great tone, too!
it seems like a must-know blues lick package. thank u for kind and absolute teaching with nice facial expressions. feels so good cz you really enjoy playing those.
I love how you review these videos and teach it, I’ve been waiting for a channel like this for ever and your very passionate. I hope you cover all of srv live performances of because I’ve been trying to figure what he does.
Love Your Method of breakdown, The Blues is so emotionally expressive for players, with minimalist technique, and maximum intensity, the difficulty is not getting too carried away. It gets hard to play when P I and M are bleeding LOL Extra Long Thumb required. Thanks Going for my Strat right now!
Eric Clapton is one of the most inspirational people in the history of the blues. John Mayer is one of his most devout followers. Thanks for the fantastic lesson. You’re the best.
It is people who love what they do create the best content on RU-vid. And this is an excellent content. I'm not a guitar player, but the way you explains makes me appreciate John Mayer's talent.
Great Vid. Yeah once I got to hear John a few times I was Like yup thats a guy who has it for sure...Inspirations from all the greats with his own vibe intertwined within....Yup Love it
My girlfriend took me to a John Mayer concert in 2001. I really didn't want to go. I didn't care about 'Your body is a wonderland' etc... But then l saw how connected Mayer was to his guitar and it blew me away. I mean, I was and still am, a massive Hendrix, Clapton, Knopfler and Buckley fan. John Mayer showed me how wrong l was about him.
This is what makes guitar playing (and frankly everything that can be a hobby) so good. The freakin pure and honest enthousiasm! It really shows you care more about the playing than about gear and stuff. Keep this vibe going man!
Thanks Stijn! It's funny recently I wondered if I shouldn't do a video on gear and stuff but I found it just doesn't interest me that much, I'd rather just play and talk music. Other channels do a much better job doing gear than I ever could, so...
@@GuitarPilgrim You're welcome. I bet most people now watch you for the authentic enthousiasm, at least I do. So we wouldn't mind you sticking to purely playing!
Thx brother, much appreciated, it's a great feeling when you put out a video that people seem to like it, you never know that when you make one of these
You sir earned a like and a subscribe with that solo. I think it sounds better slower when you play it. You can emphasize the notes and bends more (which you did beautifully).
