I’m a huge John Mayer fan and this is one of my favorite performances but mainly because of Keith Urban. I had no idea until I first saw this how great of a guitar player he was
nicolitox That’s a great one, I’ve watched all their duets! I think they are so great together, I wish they would perform together again or tour together 😁
Watch "You'll think of me live" by Keith urban on RU-vid to be blown away. His acoustic strumming is really good too. See 'Kiss a Girl" or "Somebody like you" acoustic on RU-vid. Also, see "Tonight I wanna cry" where he plays piano too.
Love Keith Urban being recognized...For many years I've understood Keith as an exceptionally great guitarist..But I'm a player of 36 years. I think sometimes, to the casual listener, greatness may go unnoticed.
@@thedude9726 Just scour YT for things related to his guitar performances and it's beyond exceptional. If you haven't already. Yes, he has tons of skill and a super sense of melody. Keep playing man !!
@@thedude9726 Watch Keith Urban's You'll think of me live. You'll be blown away. Also his guitar strumming is very unique. He makes it sound like a whole band. See Somebody like you live performance by Keith. He's an amazing guitarist.
@@richat1691 Hey man,...take about 3 minutes and listen to this collaboration between John Fogarty (Credence Clearwater Revival) and Keith Urban....it seems like it would be "for everyone" type of music but I may be wrong... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AAdyhXi_xys.html
Gotta say im impressed with what youve done with this channel. Its such a hard thing to get people to watch your channel with the ammount of content thats about. Youve really managed to push this channel and have your own identity within the space. I think youre a great player too
I agree. The success of this channel is I believe primarily due to the quality of your playing and teaching and consistent and well written videos. My channel is about to turn 1 and I have 3600 subs. I worked so hard for them. I consider myself a good player and an experienced teacher but your playing, especially your phrasing and attack is far superior to mine. This is one of my favorite channels
John Mayer has always been one of my favourite guitarists. And definitely my favourite artist, period! But man, I have to admit, I love Keith Urban's phrasing more than John's. He has a very different approach to soloing . Love it! Two amazing musicians!
WOW! Killer performance from two of my favorite guitarists, and your breakdown of it is PHENOMENAL! Loved soaking in every second of this break down of John and Keith’s styles in this videos. Amazing dude! 🙌🏽
keith urban s solo is very melodic and vocal, with emotion and taste, the best to play with john mayer at your side but to play on an equal plan. This man rocks the duo
excellent explanation for the dorian and major scale. I try to teach the same with major and minor pentatonic to some friends : same shape but not sames intentions and way to make it sound. That s why music is so interesting
You are a great teacher! Breaking down the harmony and exact chords and licks and building from there. You explain the details of what the musicians are doing and why, showing what is important and what is not and all in a way that is engaging and easy to understand. Kudos!
Urban has those distinct vocal guitar lines that don't fall into the "guitar licks" catalog. I'm a huge John Mayer fanboy, and I think that his playing in this song may have been a bit cleaner, and I love his blues influence, but I think that most non-guitar players would gravitate towards the melodic lines of Keith Urban in this instance. Excellent video!
Well, I am a guitar player and I still gravitate towards the melodic lines of Keith Urban in this instance. As opposed to the more derivative/generic bluesy, more minor pentatonicky (boring) licks of Mayer, even if they are played cleaner or better or even if Keith hits a couple 'wrong' notes here or there amidst his more inventive playing, and John doesn't.
@@MaddestMousse how is it more inventive - just because nobody chooses to play like that ? The fact is 90% of top guitarists would play pentatonic lines. Jimi/SVR/Clapton wouldnt know a dorian if it hit them in the face.
you know you have one of the best channels/videos on YT,you always have interesting ideas and content that nobody else would ever think of, its fresh and original, please keep doing what you do
These two are in my top five current favorite guitarists. Like you said, one is bluesy, the other is feel. They inspired me to start learning how to play electric guitar. The CMT crossroads they did a few years ago has some of the best guitar work I’ve listened to. Listening to Keith playing brings a tear to my eye, it’s not weird , not at all. I understand the feel.
You are the man! I've been waiting for this ! As soon as I pass the bar exam in a week and start working, you've got another patreon subscriber! Thanks!!!
I enjoyed this musical conversation(not battle) very very much.I hear it over and over again and every time I have the same, strong feelings.I think that the real music is melodic playing like this one. No shredding, no rush, no bla bla. Simple(yet difficult, cause the simple is the harder to achieve),beautiful and emotional playing which gives birth to pure feelings deep into the heart.
Your ability to illustrate the important elements of these performances, and the enthusiasm with which you do it, makes watching you videos addictive, fun and educational. Although of course while being entertaining and educational, your videos are also rather inspirational, for guitar aficionados like myself (who will never be professional but dream of one day to play a complete song without mistakes) Your videos bring down to earth and give a glimpse of that mysterious realm of virtuoso guitar players like Clapton, et al. by showing that it's based on theory, but enhance by talent.. To make a long story short: DAMN!!
Found your channel thanks to all the AMAZING Beatles content. Subscribed and became a Patreon patron for the Glen Campbell tab transcription alone. But the more I watch your videos, the more I appreciate how GREAT you are as a teacher. Plus, your analyses and song breakdowns are top-notch, AND entertaining! I LOVE this channel! (More Robby Krieger of the Doors please!)
well, you chosen my favourite song by Mayer/Urban... that solo is so stunning, as a guy wrote under that video,"just 2 straight men doing love "and that's definitely how it look like!
Hahah dude thats one of my favorite songs in general and its on youtube so im always on there watching the video and i seen your comment for a good while lol im glad im not the only one that has this performance as one of his favorites. Especially keiths solo
@@firstnamelastname7473 yeee exactly what I mean, I really love mayer but in this performance Keith was shining, is solo, his phrasing, was always on point, and at the end when Mayer stops everyone and start to play slowly... That was amazing
Fantastic video. I'm the kind if guitarist that craves to have this kind of breakdown explained to me - WHY they are playing what they are playing, which scales, etc. So much more satisfying to the intellectual side of understanding guitar, but almost no instructors are doing this kind of thing. Great job!
Your video is amazing. It turned me on to John Mayer and Kieth Urban video of don't let me down. I keep rewatching it over and over. You brought my attention to the excerllence of their guitar playing. Amazing video and an amazing analysis of this amazing performance.
You know who really surprised me? Adam Levine. Just shows you how studios hold great guitarists back these days. He played the absolute heck out of purple rain.
Thank you for this video, I love to watch both of these amazing Guitarist sing and play😍🤩 I am getting to know more about John Mayer's approach, this is not only a lesson but a huge treat for me as I am heading in the same direction as a beginner by default 😄
This was video that helped me understand modal playing vs classic blues pentatonic style. Both incredible players and great voices! How this performance went under the radar blows me away! 🙇😔🤯
Well picked! I haven't watched your video yet, but this duo of great guitarists has been one I have watched over and over. I can't find many more of Keith playing like this, he plays mostly country. This little song shows the mad genius of his mastery. John is one of the best now, incredible skills. I want Keith to play more like this. Okay now that I have commented I am going to watch you break it down. Fantastic choice Pilgrim.
love the video man. I disagree on your opinion of why John changed the intro, however. I think the band very well could've picked up on a more subtle intro riff, but he decided to go for a more punchy start to set the tone/mood of the song. he wanted his dynamic to kick off energetically, thus changing his technique to match it. I assume most of the band are using IEM's, which further lessens the importance to make an intro noticeable to them. it'd all be part of the mix. I think it was strictly for the performance and energy.
Now I liked that! I'm glad somebody can pick apart these pieces, when I hear of people sayin they just watched there heroes playing and copied them I never can understand it, because the vids r never shown close up enough and long enough for me to knw wat the he'll their doin. The fact u did this and shared it with us was great I dnt see enough of this or at all I was so taken back I didn't bother to learn wat u were showing me but al save and check it out again long comment soz but yeah pls do more of them, in fact just do that!
Thank you for this video. Some licks you've showed us are priceless! Sadly I'm not able to replicate them alone easily. so I appriciate the effort man! My FAV. cover of an amazing song by FAR!
I must say, in the traditional Prose of my Native California: "Dude, you rock. Your skills and commentary are totally aweseom and I would love to one day meet you and shake your hand.
funny thing is, I don't even play the guitar but I like the Pilgrim's videos anyway. So much information on a lot of my favorite musicians and their styles. Great work!
It was a great pleasure to see their playing, however; you also have great skills and amazing tone. Thanks for the channel and your contribution to guitar world.
Tremendous breakdown of a great song. This performance ranks with Robbie Robertson and Clapton playing Further On Up The Road on The Last Waltz. Thanks so much.
I'm a huge John Mayer fan. Saw Keith in Crossroads concert, duet with John and I was starting to listen Keith songs. Damn, why didn't I know this badass earlier.
Just took another look at this great analysis. Thom you are Pilgrim no more, but a true peer of the guitarists you feature (and none can break it down the way you do). Dorian mode, explained with the relevant major scale, and chuck in blues pentatonics, on a classic Beatles track played by two great guitarists who were clearly having a wonderful time - it gets no better than this. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Kieth is one of the greats..... and such a nice bloke as well. Very well broken down and explained Pilgrim! Thank you.......... PS..... watch Kieth with John Fogarty...... They really do play off each other. very special.
