What Happens When We Stay in Helgen for Too Long - Skyrim 

Alduin sensed the presence of a dragon soul in Helgen, but he didn't know exactly who it was. Given enough time to narrow it down and he figured it out.

So basically Alduin picks death for you. I just hate being forced to pick only two options when the game clearly has many... you can side dragons, Daedric Princes or Forsworn... 🤷Would've made an interesting game play if Alduin landed and states "You... I can sense your dragon soul. Side with me lost brother/sister. Together we shall conquer the world as one." Another could be being approached by a Dremora Lord sent by a Daedric Prince (and you can pick which one from a list; preferably Mehrunes Dagon so you can lead His army into taking over the Thalmor Embassy and slowly take over Skyrim in His name). Finally, a Forsworn prisoner in the area approaches you. The Civil War story would've been far more interesting if you were given other options besides only two.

I’ve witnessed this only once while playing, but I practically speedrun the beginning phase at this point. I know the whole script and can recall it at literally any time…continue if you dare. “Hey you, you’re finally awake” “You we’re trying to cross the border, same as us. And that their over there”

Player: “They’re both outstanding members of society and good soldiers and one of them will die here. I don’t want either of them to die. I wish there was a different option.” Bethesda: “Fucking choose!”

Well... this legendary battle between Alduin and the Dragonborn is really anticlimactic compared to the tales of old

If you are wondering what Alduin says it roughly translates to "I will devour your soul in Sovngarde"

I’ve always liked to imagine, that Alduin genuinely came to answer Lorik’s prayer for salvation, but got embarrassed that he showed up to late, and had to kill everyone, so no one would know he failed. But we know, the Dragonborn knows.

I like how despite the fact a dragon is trying to kill everyone, the Stormcloaks and Imperial Legion cant get over their feud and work together to get away…😂

...I didn't notice this until now, but Hadvar specifically says he hopes Alduin takes Ralof and the stormcloaks to Sovngarde, not Oblivion. Implies he has more respect for them as honorable Nord warriors from the very start. Huh.

I got this ending while trying to jump the helgen gate for giggles. The game was so disapointed I was booted to the main menu. xD

Alduin: “I will devour your soul in Sovngarde.” Dragonborn: *Uno reverse card”

This is the best Skyrim speedrun, it's the fastest way to complete the main quest

Alduin says: "I will devour your soul in Sovngarde". But he does it with all mortal souls, so it doesn't necesary mean he's talking to us. UPDATE: Alduin says his phrase in dovahzul, never mentions the word 'dovahkiin', but in the game, when he wants us to understand what he's saying he speaks our language, so in this case he was definitively NOT talking to us.

I already knew this. If you wait long enough he will specifically come down by you and try to kill you. If you pay attention, throughout the Helgen attack he almost gets you numerous times, even inside the keep he knocks down the walls right in front of you. When you speak to Paarthurnax and Durnehviir later on, both of them knew you were Dragonborn before you even mentioned it. I think the dragons can sense the dragon soul in you, and Alduin was following you throughout Helgen trying to kill you. It explains all of the close calls where he almost gets you numerous times.

Sort of reminds me of Fallout 4, if you spend too long taking to get to the Vault, the bombs drop and the game ends. ITs so you don't linger in the introduction too long and to encourage a "get on with it!" moment.

That's just if you get too close to him. I spent like 10 minutes wandering around watching everything burn just this morning on a new run of vanilla Skyrim. Eventually I got bored and picked a door.

There's one video where the player got himself thrown against the gate so that he glitched through the gate and ran away. The problem was that his hands were still bound and couldn't interact with anything and there was no way to unbound his hands even with console commands...

I admire their patience when a dragon is currently threatening them.

Someone should make a mod where Alduin actually DOES kill you in the intro, then you have to go through Sovngarde powering up and training with the Heroes of Old (possibly even somehow allowing you to temporarily go to the mortal world to complete quests), waiting for Alduin to arrive in Sovngarde then defeating him there.

Hadvar: “I can cut you loose inside the keep!” Yea like when I wasnt on the list back at the chopping block?

Amazing how after 10 years, it never occured to me to just stand there and see what happens. It's pretty great that Alduin actually comes down and kills you if you wait too long.

ow interesting, didn't know he would speak before you became dragonborn

I chose Ralof the first time I played, but the second time I chose Hadvar and just kept picking him. It feels like Ralof just wants another ally in the war, but Hadvar cares about us as a person. He tried to speak up for us before the executions, but unfortunately orders are orders.

I love how they still call for you to come their way after you've been brutally murdered by the dragon in front of their faces.

I love how Ralof just watched a dragon take a bite out of you and sling you across the coartyard like a discarded toy, and he's still like "come on, this way!"

Even with all of the Dragonborn's internal power, they couldn't muster enough strength to break out of their bindings.

Dragonborn: how? How did you know I was the Dragonborn? Alduin: you really wanna know? Dragonborn: yes! Alduin: I was gonna eat all of you, I’m not very smart you know. (Ralof and Hadvar look at each other and run)

in all my years doing playthroughs I never realized Hadvar and Ralof had unique animations beckoning you to follow them, always just ran in right away choose Hadvar to get free iron and steel ingots from his uncle the blacksmith

I've stayed in Helgen for the best part of 30 minutes and that's never happened, mind you I would move around and not just stand and wait for a dragon to attack me.

I've played this for thousands of hours. The first time I played I got to a house and stole a sweet roll by mistake. They chased me down and stabbed me to death but the camera just kept going around and around. I was waiting to get up or go back to last save and it never happened. I turned off the game, I'm glad I gave it a second chance.

You know, for all the process we make throughout the game, Alduin could still kill us all the same like this.

prisoner didn't make a selection fast enough, so in the end it was natural selection that was his undoing.

I love looking through Skyrim video comments just to find two people arguing about who's side is right in the civil war. Lmao the best part of my day.

Guy that rides in a cart with you to an execution: "Over here! Let's GTF out of here!" Guy that does not know you from Bob, didn't have the balls to say anything when his CO decides to murder a random guy they have no record of: "Over here, suddenly I care!" The Empire is screwed. The game gives you every reason to join the Stormcloaks and basically no reason to join the Empire. People will say "but racists!" yeah yeah, the Empire stronghold in the game and completely controlled hold of Solitude? Yeah the Khajit caravans aren;t allowed in the city there either so that's a meritless argument. The "drawbacks" of joining the rebeliion are the results of bad writing trying to force a moral dilemma into the situation. People claim without the Empire Skyrim will fold. Except the redgaurds say resistance is strong there. It must be, it was strong enough they could send a band of warriors to recover a traitor. But even all of the thoughts of allies aside...... The Nords are based on northern European cultures. In known history going back to Germanic tribes, NOBODY has gone to the north of Europe and conquered the people. This plays in the game also. The losses the old men of the north took were from surprise attacks, and once they got their sense of what had happened they rallied and trounced whoever had the nerve to attack them. The concept of the cold is played out also, even simple things like the expedition with the lens to the old dwarven ruin where the cold warped the lens in transit, even in the current times in the game people from as close as Cyrodil aren't familiar with the climate enough to prepare. face it, Skyrim is for the Nords, and when things settle down they will have their own "new" Empire in the north. Besides, for all the talk of the civil war hurting Skyrim, the same can be said of the old Empire also- who is to say the same argument about invasion from Akavir could not be used against the Thalmor?

I was a kid when I encountered this, so you can imagine how this impacted my fear of dragons in this game

Had this happen to me once while Hadvar and Ralof were still arguing with each other.

In Helgen, there is a bug where a weapon could drop. I was able to take pocket shots on Alduin and killed him. I watched NPCs running around looking at the sky reacting to nothing. The quest marker vanished and you became stuck there. I ended up falling randomly then died. It was an interesting glitch / bug.

I'm curious, if a dragon kills a Dragonborn, does the dragon gets their soul?

Oh my god I did not know you can choose sides this early in the game I went with the Imperial guy thinking the Stormcloak guy ran off by himself. I've been Imperial ever since

in one of my runs, i was standing next to the Ralof door and Alduin landed and fus ro dah'd me , my ragdolling body went through the door and it was hilarious

I wish the could give a third option to team up with Auldin and help him wake up the dragons

Real talk I didn't know there was a choice this early in the game whether to go with the imperials or stormcloacks, I'd always just fallowed the imperial thinking that was the only way

Ah i havent seen helgen in quite a while since that alternate start mod release. So nostalgic... i forgot about its existence tbh It wasn't that bad after all just buggy af more than anything bethesda ever made. But hey at least its not *Oblivion sewers* omg. I always felt like i had enough of the game after exiting them back then in those dark, uncivilized times

I'll never get why they care so much about you. Like, this prisoner who was seconds from being beheaded I shall protect and risk my life to make sure they and only they will get into a safe keep with me, not the leader of my cause he can die lmao

I'm very impressed with this game, it's over 10 years old and I'm still discovering new things in it! It may sound silly, but I never thought about not running away from Helgen to see what could happen if I didn't leave the village!

I love how they make alduon seem so strong and like he is gonna rek you when you fight him, but all he does is fly around land for 3s and then fly away again 😂

I believe this only happens on high enough difficulty to trigger sync-kill animation. Otherwise he just blasts you like a rag doll with unrelenting force.

the funny thing is, i'm sure at one point so many of us really debated which one to follow... and yet it really doesn't matter, whichever you follow you can still join either faction, or neither and just do side quests / explore for 9001 hours. i usually follow hadvar, get the free items from his uncle, then join the stormcloaks, or neither side.

Over 10 years later and this game still manages to surprise me. XD

What did alduin say ?

Imagine booting up this game for the 1st time, only to realize you were destined for the chopping block. You've then been spared by some random chance of fate Only to be devoured shortly after Thus concluding over 500 hours worth of gameplay in under 10 minutes. What a cruel sense of humor!

Yeah that has never happened to me and as a kid when this came out I used to not pause, but walk away from the game for a long time and I did it here the first time I played so I could help my mom do chores, came back 2 hours later and alduin just chilling staring at me as he got raided with arrows. He didn't care. He just watched me as I awkwardly stood in the middle of a town, raging in flames from an unexpected battle. I'm now 23 which is 12 years late and I never even got eaten by a dragon like that. I've only been killed by a dragon one time during my entire life playing this and it was parthenax who did me in, I accidentally shouted at him and he wrecked me. I reloaded from there.

As a friend of mine once told me, "Never meddle in the affairs of dragons, for you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup."

I have the theory that Ulfric uses a shout to summon Alduin (Basically using Alduin's name as a shout), as his gag can easily be removed by another, even if their hands are bound. He attempts to do it while no one is looking or are asleep, hence the immortal words at the start of the game "Hey, you're finally awake."

Strange, when I did this, Alduin just blasted me with fire and I was simply knocked down.

This happened to me long way back when I got to that situation and googled which one is better and took too long

I didn't even know dragons could do that until I encountered an Ancient Dragon. I'd almost killed it, too!

Oh thats why this never happens to me cuz I used console commands and activate god mode and mess with stuff and return everything back to normal once I got out of the cave

My first time playing skyrim like 1 yr ago, picking who to go with was the hardest decision, so i had to look on youtube who the better option was

The nature of optimism and pessimism coming together in that last "come on, this way" could be felt

This decision is like when you have divorced parents and they keep trying to out do each other and make you pick a side lol
