I used good old Windows 7 until the month that support was cut off. I converted to Mint and have had to boot into Windows *once* since my conversion, then I found out how to build what I needed on Mint anyway. Zero regrets.

That is dumb that they are cutting off support for windows 7. Many Hospitals use windows 7 due to the fact that it does not invade patient privacy, and it does not do a system update during a brain surgery.

Windows XP & Windows 7 are the best OS Microsoft has every made.

Many of us went into modified 10, like Ghost Edition, with removed bloatware, disabled telemetry and so on. Personally for me a different user interface was the hardest switch. Mix of Win 8 and 10 would look better than a plain 10. But TBH, Microsoft should add all of there themes into 10. I believe that many users seeing Win7 theme at the begging would be more interested in switching to 10. Me included. I did my switch only to have better Ambilight and game performance.

I honestly feel like we are in Windows 11 right now. The amount of changes they have made got Windows simpler and more aesthetic but I am not sure about performance.

my school computers decided to upgrade to windows 10 when windows 7 support ended, and it was a version from 2015 some computers did have the latest windows 10 but most computers which used to run windows 7 turned into a very old windows 10, that if i'm not mistaken, is STILL isn't supported.

All the reasons to abandon windows 7 were artificially created by microsoft. The only thing wrong with windows 7 is that microsoft refuses to give the newest security and features from win10 because it doesn't suit their "grand plan", whatever it is. Windows XP compared to Windows 7 is incompatible with most features, but microsoft can easily make win7 have all the good features of win10 if they wanted to.

If you can find your old licence keys for windows 7 or windows 8, they always work on windows 10.

I still have a copy on my old lap-top, plan on upgrading to 10 since I never used it much, or have gotten used to windows 10, but I plan on backing-it to another drive.

Windows 7, instead, loads everything after boot, and does it quicker compared to windows 10, based on the programs and apps loading. Another option is having a linux virtual machine for internet + windows 7 host for games, MS Office, Photoshop, etc. This setup can run pretty well on modern-ish computers with SSD and 8+ GB of memory, Linux itself actually uses not a lot of it. . Modern VMs can be quite unintrusive, and additional isolation means no viruses. You can firewall host machine through guest one bridging physical network to the guest, and setting up IP host address to only network through the guest one - this is fairly secure for home and office use even if host is insecure, although VM software itself will need to be updated. It is theoretically very possible but fairly unlikely in reality that insecure host will compromise a secure guest, unless you are specifically targeted by a skilled attacker. . Or if you can afford it, using old gaming PC or notebook as internet-only linux workstation, and a modern PC with either win7 or win10 for gaming. Who cares if win10 steals your save-game data or loses a few minutes of your progress since last autosave? Or even is infected with virus (as long as you have 2-factor auth on credit cards tied to steam). . I'm typing this from a very old linux PC and it runs great (well except that the last youtube "upgrade" made its oldness to really show, but the OS is fine). If your hardware manufacturer really actually supports linux it's fairly easy to set up and learn, otherwise you might either need to get help setting it up, or learn some useful sysadmin skills.

Literally nothing happened after support for Windows 7 ended. In fact, many people are still getting updates without buying the ESU or bypassing it.

Geese, coming back to this old vid. I might've underestimated 8.1/10. 8.1 was just Windows 7 with NVMe, Secure Boot, driver downloads, and being less resource intensive for the sake of snappier browsing-albeit sacrificing newer Nvidia graphics. As for 10 I'm very impressed with how Windows 10 became Windows 11 in all the right corners. Screw 11, 10 is the new 11 baby (even down the new annoying folders). BTW I'm still using 7 and I'm fine, just get AVG/Avast or somethin.

I still have windows 7 in my computers in 2023. ALL functions still work fine like web browsing, document processing and the latest version of antivirus. only one pc (a lenovo) has issues with gmail and yahoo but we navigate around by clicking "proceed to website" and it works fine

To come back and answer this question three years later. Nothing. Absolutely nothing happens when Windows 7 'dies'. As long as you're using it with era-appropriate hardware and don't care about software updates. I'm still using it on my main computer.

Surely making an OS we actually like would be more profitable.

I was one of the lucky ones. I won a House Party and a Windows 7 Ultimate Box. I actually held a launch party at my house. Besides a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate Signature Edition it came with some really cool stuff for the guests I had over. The biggest this was a FREE one year license to Kaspersky Internet Security. Now I wouldn't touch that internet security with a 10 foot pole today and not to mention I have been using Bit Defender since 2006, it was still pretty cool to hand out all the extras that came in the Windows 7 launch box. They even put party streamers in it, Balloons, Playing Cards, Napkins, Tote Bags, and a bunch of discounted software. I loved Windows 7, and every OS before it even Vista. I HATE Windows 8 and 8.1. I waited to do the free upgrade to Windows 10 Pro and love 10 now. I am building another new PC in the next couple of days and I am anxiously waiting Windows 11 release.

Folks will still use Win 7 and not worry about it. No one really worries that much about security and gamers? That's their problem. As long as the machines run they will stay with 7.

The problem is that there is no "safe" windows Win7 = No updates Win10 = Breaking regularly because of updates. No escape from a broken pc anymore.

Watching this on my Windows 7 Ultimate on Virtual Box VM on Windows 10 Home version 2004, this is sad. But I’ve installed antivirus AVG (it was moaning in action centre to find online antivirus due to the end of support) which comes with its own secure browser which blocks ads so I can still enjoy what I did from back in the day.

I'm still using my abacus. The only anti-virus I need is termite repellant.

I'm fine with Windows 7 until my current pc dies. Then it's on to Linux Mint, already using it on my laptop because Windows 7 is compatible with it. It works great, smooth and flawless. Zero bloatware. Zero ads trying to sell me apps. Zero tracking and harvesting my data.
