What happens when you make an Old Fashioned, Manhattan, Moscow Mule - but different? Something great if you’re using Sotol as the base spirit! Sotol is one of Mexico’s signature spirits (but I got one from Texas!), being a cousin to Tequila and Mezcal. Although Sotol was once considered a liquor for the drunks and peasants, it has enjoyed a revival in the last few decades, and we were fortunate enough to receive a bottle of Aged Texan Sotol from one of our Patrons, so you know I had to try it out. This one sits somewhere between tequila, mezcal and young whiskey, so if you like the sound of that - and if you enjoy quick and easy cocktails - pull up a chair and get ready to learn more about this unique spirit! Cheers!

Oh that's really good to see, yesterday night someone asks me for a cocktail with an endemic mexican drink (non tequila), so I've tried "sotol white negroni", with white bitter, dry vermouth and orange peel. It was really good ♥️ Can you show us how to make Angostura bitter, please?

Swiss Damassine. Or french marc, a clear brandy made with the crushed grapes left after the wine is made.

I think El Paso would’ve been a more appropriate name for the Manhattan alternative. It’s not a city like New York, but it is in the region where the spirit is from. I made it for me and a couple friends and it was amazing.

Houston is way out in East Texas (hundreds of miles/kilometers from Driftwood) and is built on a swamp/bayou. Not a great namesake for a sotol cocktail, in my opinion. Austin is much closer, and that brand of sotol is sold in many liquor stores here, but Austin already has a signature cocktail (the Mexican Martini), so that's probably not the best name for it, either. Maybe something like the Driftwood Special, or perhaps a Salt Lick Cocktail (named after the famous barbeque restaurant Driftwood is best known for). -a guy from Austin.

What an interesting review. Loved that you explained exactly how to make those. Got a project now. To pick nits, sotol isn't a Mexican plant or product. It's a southwestern desert plant as your map showed. There are petroglyphs in West Texas showing the indigenous people brewing that plant for an assumed ceremonial drink long before there was a Mexico or a Texas. But,. if you felt a need to assign an origin, (despite a self-anointed DO awarded to themselves in 2002 ), the nod would go to Texas. The first commercial sotol distillery was in El Paso, TX, circa 1907. Mexico began commercial production in 1994, I think. But, folks on both sides of the border have been moonshining this stuff for years. I live about 50 miles from the mothership in Driftwood and try to get down there as often as I can. Their tasting room has fantastic drinks, great food and the nicest staff you'll ever meet. During the Covid crises, when the bars were closed, they converted their production line to make hand sanitizer and gave it away for free. They also started a non-profit land conservancy. Good folks. Thanks again for the review and instruction. Well done!

It's nice, I had never heard of it! If I'll ever happen to be in Mexico I'll have to try it! Ever thought about ah episode about making ginger beer (both big and small batches, like one 1.5l bottle and a gallon)? Whenever I tried, apart from being a bit flat, it also had a strong fermented taste (slightly off) and almost no brightness, like the not alcoholic have (a good fentiman is the best soft drink, but it's prohibitely expensive)
@KevinKos
