So I've never worked with resin, but I study chemistry and other sciences, and my best guess for preserving fresh flowers in resin has to do both with the flower and the amount of resin. Resin gives off heat as it sets and cures, and the more resin that is around a fresh flower, the more heat is released to 'cook' it, which distorts the colour. The lack of water in dried flowers prevents this heat from distorting the colors. This also means that the type of flower, it's natural moisture percentage when fresh, and the 'tenderness/delicateness' of the flower will affect the result after the resin is set. So trying to preserve really sensitive flowers like a rose when fresh would be expected to be really difficult.

I've heard that fresh flowers will rot over time even in Resin and that's why you have to dry them out. I like using silica gel to dry them because they retain their color and shape.

@a janee I saw his video but he used fake flowers. Resin heats up when curing so fresh flowers dry because of the heat and lose all of their colors. The heat don’t affect the colors of plastic so fake flowers are the same before and after curing. The best technique to cast “natural looking” flowers in resin is to use fabric flowers because the dyes used to dye the fabric don’t lose their colors due to the heat. (Sorry for any English mistakes ;) )

What happened with my flowers after a long period of time, was that they started to develop a light yellow-ish tone to some edges, but it wasn't that noticeable, to present day it's a bit noticeable, but it still looks stunning. It really depends what colour flower you put in, because if it does get that yellow tint, it can look alright with some colours, so you don't need to worry about that.

From my understanding with fresh flowers you need to have their stems in glycerin so they can drink it. Once they have it should preserve the color of the flowers so you can put them in resin.

As the resin heats it cooks the fresh flowers. You can use a resin with a lower curing temp as well as do it in stages because the more resin you use the higher the curing temp gets.

What if you were to dip the rose in a pot of resin giving it a thin coat, then when dry put it in the mold and cover with resin. Maybe this will pre preserve the color and protect it more from heat?
@samueledwards1888

You want to use a super slow curing resin, because they produce the least amount of heat during the cure. You should be able to use heartier blossoms with a slow cure resin with minimal discoloration. You could also dry the blooms in silica sand (crystal cat litter that’s been made super fine). The microwave dryer cooks your flowers too which is why they lose color, not because of moisture content. Cilicia sand will draw the moisture out in a short period of time, while preserving the color and structure of the bloom.

you got me started with experimenting with flowers , I got different results, red roses turned yellow towards the middle, the edges stayed red, the leaves stayed green., a few turned brown. Marigolds the orange stayed orange, the center stayed yellow but part of it brown. the wax begonia turned greenish yellow, coleus I got mixed results, some kept their color. I tried drying coleus in silica, it stripped the color, small flowers , also little flowers..same thing I also had some that turned brown and oozed sticky junk out from the side. You should start a facebook group where we could upload photos of our experiments. I put many on instagram. The fresh flowers may continue to change colors so please follow up in a week or two

If you add a little bit of blue / purple to your resin mix it might help with the colour and also with the aging of the resin . I learned that doing nails as acrylic and gel both have a blue or purple tone to it as it becomes yellow when it cures (or ages for acrylics ) Hope that's helpful 😊 also great video and positioning of the flowers !!

Oh my God the Queen Anne's Lace is killing me! Sooo.. if you got a minute I have a little story for you. I'm silly like that😘 Bizarre how I found your Channel. I have actually had an obsession with flowers for a very long time. I have had jewelry making supplies for years, I used to own a store and ya know, was going to make jewelry to! Yea, never had time! Ever! Fast forward to today, I still have all of the stuff. It was just something I could never get rid of trust me I've heard it from everyone why do you still have that? So NOW, I still have no time, however I buy flowers all the time! When they mark them down at my grocery that's right next to me, I think the girl that works there actually does it on purpose for flowers that she knows I would like LOL, We've become friends😉 .. I buy them all the time because I hate to see beautiful things get discounted or thrown away! Now, even if I have to stay up until 2 or 3 in the morning, I always take the flowers, after they have dried out, and put them in containers. I have so so many! And I mean like tie-dye flowers 2 beautiful roses just all kinds of stuff! Because I just keep thinking in my head I am going to do something with these with resin! I am! I am! I'm not getting rid of them! Never never! 😆 I take great care to make sure that every piece of a flower is just so! ... Okay that being said, I never have talked about this to anyone. I just kind of do it. Well I mean the girl at the grocery .. I said I would like to make things out of them once I think, but that's all. So Today while I was cleaning I just kept thinking about it and trying to figure in my mind what else I need to do it, where I need to get molds and different things. So I stopped cleaning to take a break.. I pick up my phone .. turn RU-vid on.. annnnd 💥 YOU'RE RIGHT THERE! 🤔 That beautiful blue hair, which I'm drawn to because mine is different colors every time I blink and I don't care that I'm 46 no one knows that. Oops. Anyways, and your fairy lights! 😍😇 I read the description and was like wait a minute WHAT?! I started wondering if I was thinking but talking out loud and just didn't know it and my phone heard me lol .. because nothing, and I mean NOTHING in 15 YEARS of watching RU-vid, has EVER come up like this. I have a thousand times over, told myself that I need to look it up, find out how it's done or if I can even do it, ya know that kind of thing, and never have. So I turn the video on and it's like your me 20 years ago with darker hair LOL and way way better make up! I always thought I was a fairy and I'm pretty sure I'm going to prove that to myself this year and I'm proud of it!😂 SO ... it's almost like you have been sent to me by the Goddess of Creativity for this New Year to give me the push I needed to get it started! I truly think it's something my soul needs right now. I absolutely adore you ,you are fabulous! I am going to go back and watch every video! I already subscribed and turned on all the notifications, so I'm set! You do a great job and are very detailed! That's awesome for people like me that need that instruction! And I know sometimes people need to hear that! so, thank you for taking your time to read my little story... I've gotten into that for some reason to over the past couple weeks, oh well. You are fabulous and I cannot wait to go watch all your other videos! Happy New Year ! Loads of Love to ya! ❤ A Kindred Spirit You Didn't Know You Had. 😘 I'm also a bit on the silly side in case you didn't notice.🤦‍♀️ 😘

Take care of yourself and follow all safety precautions, always wear a mask and gloves when working with resin and or powders/dusts of all types, even glass be safe with it, even if you cannot smell them they can be offgassing (the resins). Mariaela on Etsy and others make beautiful glass pendants that are so inspiring! =) Take care of yourself and Mother Earth and enjoy your journey! =)

In the curing process resin heats up from the chemical reaction, this chemical reaction could be hot enough it heats the flowers and partially cooks them, turning them yellow and brown in the resin. I feel like a low thermal resin might have a better chance at preserving fresh flowers. My 2 cents anyway. :)

I cant believe that wasn't common sense... if a fresh flower with moisture inside it is exposed to air, it will speed the decomposition process. if it's fully encased in resin it most likely could prevent it from aging, degrading, & browning. what a waste of a video.

@@rebeccavanrooyen1641 you can find me under gleier41@gmail.com . Unfortunately I am a terrible procrastanator. So far I have bought ALUMINITE HIGH GLOSS CLEAR casting resin. Make sure you get clear. First time I got white but will find something to do with that later. Have watched many videos and have a plan. Will find a form that I want to use - either those silicone bake forms or :????. Something that will hold all the flowers I want to put into one piece. Pour in maybe half full - push in flowers and weight them down. Let dry overnight. Then the next day pour in another bath that will cover the flowers. Should get to that next week if you want to wait that long. Have to finish trimming the lemon tree and planting the rest of the garden. Keep in touch and we will compare notes. Thank you! This is why they browned, the air has to be completely sealed off immediately! Or else the process of rot starts which is also when a flower looses moisture,
@gail8834
@gail8834 4 года назад
@@justinkaboutit7047 What if you paint the resin on first, then put it in a partially filled mold before adding the rest. All organic things will eventually rot, even in resin. I have some dried beans and corn stuff and even that went bad. They are old! I just want to see it done and see how long it lasts. Ok..... now the important investment. A pressure pot. That will push the air out. Look at Nick Zammeti and Peter Brown. They have used a pressure pot to get air out of resin projects. I think one of them even tried to do a resin/fresh flower resin project.

Just Ink About It its not rot, its discolouration bc resin heats up and it slightly cooked the fresh flower. Bc fresh flowers still have water/moist in them that is what gets cooked. Dry flowers dont have that anymore, why it stays the same colour all throughout

Has anyone just considered dipping flowers in resin, then just hanging them upside down to cure? Then it could just be as thin layer over the flower, and not overheat. Then after that you could put the already resin coated flower in another resin project.
@dianironfeather7785
@dianironfeather7785 4 года назад
The two flowers that changed colors should have been in a deeper mold. You need the resin to cover and seal the stem. That's why the Queen Anne's Lace came out good. The cut stem was submerged. The rose and flower were essentially dying. The stem was exposed and neither watered nor sealed.

dian Iron Feather no its bc resin is a chemical reaction that creates heat when setting, so it burned the flower a li’l, thats why it was discolouring. The water in the fresh flowers were being cooked slightly, hence the colour

In my humble opinion...and I've never done any of this...soooo, I think if you immersed the flower entirely, it might work. On those ones that turned yellow, the back of the flower was exposed. If it was cut off from all oxygen, therefore all decay? I think possibly that's why the queen anne's lace worked?
@stillhuntre55
@stillhuntre55 4 года назад
I think the issue is also that the rose, even if encased entirely, is inside that resin with not only moisture (inside the petals) and some air (mirco-bubbles), but with all the normal, natural microorganisms that live on and in the petals of the flower (just like we have organisms living in our eyelashes, etc). With tiny pockets of air, inherent moisture and organisms still present, I believe you get what forensic scientists call "closed container decomposition"
@uselesswriting3092
@uselesswriting3092 4 года назад
Regardless of being fully immersed or not, if they’ve got water in them (which if they’re “fresh,” they do) they will wilt and brown anyways.
@sumayyahhomeschool5650

Resin also heats up as it cures, I think this is what's causing the rapid damage to the flowers. I've seen some people have success with fresh flowers if they use resins that have low curing heats. Granted, I dont know if they stayed looking fresh weeks after the project...
