During the oily transition phase, I tied my hair up in a messy bun every night (and left it in if I didnt have to go to work or church). This helped the oil produced from my scalp distribute to the ends easily. I didnt have too bad of a time after that.

I am pushing 70 and for the last few years the only hair, body or face wash I use is raw African black soap. For my hair I use an ACV rinse. I have waist length, thick, straight hair. Took about a month, it felt a little greasy but not a lot, no flakes, no smell...now is only thing I will ever use. We also have super hard water, this lathers like a dream and I have never got any split ends and I check monthly with a magnifying glass. We put so much crap into out hair/bodies for so many years; it takes more than over night to get it all out again
@FairylandCottage
@FairylandCottage 6 лет назад
great information! thanks for sharing. Do you use the African Black soap as a hair wash too or just the acv rinse? I would love to have waist length hair. Amazing. x
@mhspear
@mhspear 6 лет назад
I wash my hair with african black soap, followed by the ACV, I believe I was told the vinegar sets the ph level . When my cut bars get small ( I buy big bricks, 5-10 lbs) I put them in a jar with filtered water and make liquid soap. Absolutely no waste. People claim the soap is rough, I have found it to be mildly exfoliating, my skin always feels squeaky clean and really soft.

Thank you for this video! I appreciate your sharing your story and how this has helped your hair. I hope you don't mind, but in hopes of helping others, I want to share my story here, as a follow-up to trying the no-poo method. (It's a positive one!) Seven years ago, I almost died from sepsis plus pneumonia. I was in the hospital for a number of days and was pumped full of antibiotics, which saved my life. After getting out of the hospital I had to take yet another 2 weeks worth of antibiotics. No complaints, as I'm happy to be alive. However, three months later (as a result of all the antibiotics, I think), my hair started falling out. I lost about 2/3 of my hair. What didn't fall out changed and became very kinky and frail. What grew back thereafter was also very kinky and frail. It appears the outer keratin layer of my hair strands was literally gone. It's been that way ever since. Over time it seems my hair has gotten even thinner and more frail. When I ran across your video, I decided to give this method a try...no more store-bought chemicals to see if my hair might recover and regain strength over time. (Your comment about what your hair dresser said sparked me into this...how your hair seemed healthier and stronger. That was what I needed to hear!) I've washed my hair twice now without store-bought shampoo/conditioner. The first time I used chickpea flour and water mixture, followed by a diluted vinegar rinse. I don't think I mixed the flour right as it was very liquidy and gritty at the same time. When I finished I had a LOT of broken hair in the drain, reminiscent of when my hair was falling out. Living and learning here. Perhaps I "scrubbed" too much for my frail hair. Anyway, despite the abundance of hair in the drain, my hair looked far better after drying it than it has in a long time. Still fluffy (which I appreciate since it's SO fine), but it looked clean and much less frizzy than when using shampoo. It was happy hair! The second time I washed my hair, about 4 days later, I used a combo of half chickpea flour and half buckwheat flour (experimenting along the way). I used less water in the mixture and allowed it to sit a while before using it. The mixture was not gritty. I applied it to my hair and did not scrub, but allowed it to sit on my head as I showered. The shower smelled like bread...yummy! Anyway, after rinsing it out and applying the usual diluted vinegar rinse, my hair again looked wonderful! Not frizzy, yet still fluffy, so it looked like I had more hair than I really do which I appreciate. There was not as much hair in the drain as the first time, so that was a great thing. I'm going to wash my hair again tomorrow (it'll be 6 days between washings) and I plan to use chickpea flour and water that I carefully mix into a thin paste and allow to sit so the flour is not gritty. Every day between washes I've been just wetting my hair completely and styling it as usual (light blow dry). It's been looking far better than it has in a long time with commercial shampoos, so I'm thrilled with this natural method of cleaning my head! I have not experienced the transition phase that you and others have talked about. Maybe it's because I'm slowly transitioning to washing it less frequently than before, rather than going "cold turkey" into a 1 week lapse between washings. Anyway, it remains to be seen if my hair will actually recover from the damage done from my illness. At any rate, my scalp has been extremely dry and this method is allowing my natural oils (what's left of them) to move down onto the hair shaft, which I think is helping. Only time will tell if I can help my hair to recover. Thank you for allowing me to share this long story. I hope it will help others somehow. If it's OK with you, I'll post updates. :)

@Elena Vladislava Kuzminá You're very welcome, Elena! In fact, I've since turned to using buckwheat flour for washing my hair/scalp. I found the chickpea flour to be a bit rough on my scalp and hair. The buckwheat flour is softer and gentler on my fragile hair. It cleans just as well! It's been years now since I've put any chemicals on my head and I intend to remain that way. I truly wish you the best! I'm sorry your hair is grey at age 32. The color in my hair rebounded to being much more brown then grey (although after being so sick, it was a "dead" gray all over for a while). I hope yours rebounds! ALSO, my hair is much thicker now. I lost a lot of hair when I was so sick, and it got VERY thin. Slowly, it rebounded and now it's MUCH thicker than before. That may be partially due to the fact that I'm drinking 16 ounces of celery juice every day, but nevertheless, it's looking better than before. I hope yours does the same. Best wishes to you, and blessings to you and yours :)

Grey hair comes from copper deficiencies and the right ratio to zinc is 15 : 1 or 30: 2. Check your vitamins or some more avacado when you see the grey in your diet. But it is important to get your zinc and copper right or you can't t absorb these two right.

I decided to stop colouring my hair a while back. Now I use chamomile tea (very strong), fresh lemon juice, and sometimes honey. I'll sit outside in the sun for a tiny bit and read a book, take my dog for a walk, or work in the garden. I'll leave it on as long as possible, while doing house work or just hanging around the house. I've left it on up to 5 hours. It gives beautiful soft highlights, and my hair feels terrific afterwards. You definitely have to do this a few times before you notice. I also haven't experienced doing this in the winter without going out in the sun, but I'm sure it will still lighten things up. So many natural ways to add colour to your hair. I've also just started the "no poo" with chickpea flour, since I started watching your channel. I've done two washings thus far, also rinsing afterward with lemon and vinegar. My hair looks fabulous and feels so good after a wash! I used to wash my hair maybe twice a week, so my hair is used to going a while without a wash. Thumbs up so far! 😊

MidLife VanLife gosh that's great to hear! Thanks for the lighting tip. It would be interesting to see how you get on in winter. Let me know how it goes as the months go on but nearly 6 months in I'm still going strong. Who knew the humble chickpea could be magic! ❤️🙏

Hi Rose, I've not used henna so rigorously but I've heard my friends using Indian gooseberry (also known as aamla in Hindi) powder in henna mixture. Aamla is supposed to make hair darker (probably not just in one use I guess). Maybe you can find good resources online and use aamla powder accordingly :) Good luck :)

I'd love to do this, but I'm not quite brave enough yet! My issue is, when I haven't washed my hair for even 2 days it really starts to smell, that "unwashed scalp" smell, possibly because my hair type is oily rather than dry. So I'm not sure how long I could put up with that at work etc! As for greys, I have actually recently stopped dyeing mine (I'm 36 and have a light-ish scattering). I believe in self expression and I love to see people try out colours for fun, but I'd got to the stage where I was covering mine because I felt like I had to, and it was annoying me, so I'm rebelling! :)

I am starting to no-poo process. I have thin, curly hair, and I have always had a ton of different products, mostly tried to use "natural" products, which means expensive... I decided to do something different (including simplifying and de-stressing) after experiencing hair loss (yikes!) that was very noticeable in the front. -I started by ditching conditioner. I replaced it with ACV, water, essential oils mixture, which has been amazing. I can skip shampoos between rinsing with the ACV. (I have noticed my hair growing back a little already.) -I tried a castille soap/essential oils/something else combo that left my hair feeling like hay. -I have added a rosemary wash to the rinsing process and that has been nice too. - I have attained some natural, raw rhassoul (or ghassoul) from Morocco, which I can use instead of shampoo. It may sound complicated, but when I break it all down, it is clay (rhassoul), vinegar, and rosemary. Maybe I'll have to add some oils afterwards to tame the frizz! Almond oil? Jojoba? Any suggestions? Remember thin and curly hair. For the greys, I figured if my hair looks great, I don't really care what color it is! Hoping for some great results! Wish me luck!

Flour did not work for me at all. When you are cooking and mix flour with oil, it makes roux, which is very thick. In trying to wash with flour, it combined with my hair oils and basically turned to roux, and it was almost impossible to wash out. Cider vinegar made no difference in helping to rinse it out, and is not a replacement for conditioner at all. I went no-poo after moving to Louisiana and the climate made my hair so oily I couldn't stand it! So after 3 months of no-poo-ing, my body finally got the message to stop producing so much oil, and it has been better ever since. My scalp got really bad, and every time I find a remedy that works, my scalp acclimates to it and gets flaky again. I switched to the Curly Girl Method and my hair has gotten even healthier. My stylist was surprised when I told her it had been over a year since my last cut.
