Starting at 18:37 it was so funny watching Oscar say the same things that Joey and Chandler were about to say, and then his reaction at 18:53 when Ross says, "She was different." (And it's kind of wild that this episode first aired almost 27 years ago and the interpretation/reaction from audiences hasn't changed.) But then at 22:18 when Rachel tells Ross that he should go, and Oscar's face falls and eyes begin to fill with tears...then it wasn't so funny anymore.

Their breakup episode really does feel real and powerful. David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston just killed it. If you ever go back and rewatch, the thing that always strikes me about the lead-up is that they mention the Xerox girl a few different times in the prior episodes as just a throwaway thing. It makes me feel a bit queasy when I watch those episodes later knowing this is coming.

Ross should have respected her work, and after her crisis have a talk. Its fine for him to feel neglected, it makes sense, but all he did there was not okay. He never respects the fact that its the first time she has a job she likes

well said. Rachel's arch was based on leaving her old life behind in attempt to find independence which the show did a good job showing with her struggles with work. She found love on the way but it didn't mean she would put Ross (who has his dream job) first. Imagine if Rachel had done and said what Ross said and did. The technicality doesn't make it fine for Ross.

Imo if Ross were spending all day at a job he were passionate about and Rachel was complaining that she never sees him, everyone would say relationships are more important than work, Ross was being a bad bf, and he is the one who has to change. Funny how it’s the other way around when it’s Rachel who spends all day at work.

It was a few weeks of late nights, and he's acting like he's not seen her in months. Is she meant to just blow off work, even during work emergencies because she has a date? Yeah, that'll go down well! Remember when Ross had to go to work on their first big date and instead of being annoyed, Rachel was completely understanding and just waited around for hours, all alone. Wasn't mad at all. Just let him do his thing and yet when it's his turn to do this for her, he purposely gets in the way, even after she begs him not to come down and he even ends up starting a fire which could of gotten her fired.

There’s always been a lot of debate about whether or not what Ross did is actually considered cheating, and my opinion on it is this: lets say for the sake of this that it’s objectively not cheating, the fact that he sleeps with someone literally like an hour after he thinks they’re broken up is the real problem. Because that for me would throw our entire relationship down the drain, whether or not I just wanted a pause or an actual break up. So it’s not the fact that he slept with another person that I have a problem with, it’s how fast he did it.

I've always been of the opinion that Ross' biggest mistake in this situation was walking out after Rachel said she wanted a break. They should have sat down and talked about what being on a break would look like, whether it was a break-up or if they were just taking a brief pause to sort out their feelings. They should have talked about whether this meant that they would be allowed to see other people or not. The whole thing was obviously one big miscommunication, and ultimately that came down to Ross walking out

That last scene with Ross and Rachael is sooo emotional. I’m 100% on Rachel’s side here. I feel for Ross but he was soooo bad here. Rachel literallt says “maybe” we should just take a break, which is the start of a conversation, nothing in stone. And she only said it clearly in exhaustion at ross picking and picking. I think Rachel was at fault too to be honest. Sure, what you said about Ross is all true he definitely overstepped it, but you have to look at it from both sides. He was clearly unhappy about Mark worming his way into their relationship and Rachel didn't respect or even listen to his concerns about it (Joey also backed Ross up about Mark when Rachel first met him). It was obvious what Mark was trying to do and it worked when it caused Rachel to initiate a break from the relationship. Mark calling, then going over to her apartment on their anniversary and making sure Ross heard him in the background sealed the deal. For Rachel to even entertain him being there at that moment was wrong, especially so soon after telling Ross they should maybe take a break. Bad look.

It’s great to see a man reacting exactly the way I feel. People so often cast this as some men vs women conflict where men see break differently. And Rachel can break up with for any reason, I don’t know why he acted like he was owed anything. Personally, I can understand how Ross thought Rachel was breaking up with him. That being said, he should have owned what happened, immediately. He should not have let her find out from someone else, and not tried to hide it. Bc in his mind he hadn't done anything wrong so he needed to communicate that. Maybe it wouldn't have helped, maybe it would have. The thing is, he did what he did, and should have stood by it, regrets and all. (also, he should not have said "it was different", that was just dumb)

Yep, to me Ross' only fault was just hiding the whole thing from Rachel, and stringing her around with the idea of rebuilding their relationship while he was literally lying to her. Oof. Some rough episodes for sure. I fully think Ross is in the wrong. He already was annoyed that there was a part of her life he wasn't a part of (even though she stated that she liked having her own thing and being independent). He is obsessive about Mark despite Rachel saying to trust him and Monica giving him that great talk about growing up. I do think Rachel shouldn't have let Mark come by but otherwise she had every right to be annoyed. I think he can feel neglected and say that but sometimes sh*t be like that and you have to deal with someone being busy and communicate in a normal way. To my mind they didn't even finish the conversation about taking a break, he just stormed off. Even the next day when she's all "i'm sorry I don't actually want to take a break" he's like "no yeah totally" but then decides they were on a break when being stroppy about it when convenient. They do kinda both talk about having broken up and "getting back together" so i guess there's some argument there but even if they'd fully broken up then and there going and having sex with someone immediately is not the way and I'd be upset too. If something had happened with Rachel and Mark he'd have gone ballistic. Ugh..relationship Ross is the worst Ross 😂😂

Two fantastic episodes. The debate over "they were on a break" comes up in shows made even today. Ross screwed up by sleeping with Chloe, for sure. Not excusing that. But their problems go back way further. Neither of them has ever been secure in their relationship. Ross hasn't gotten over his first wife and is still expecting Rachel to break his heart, too. Rachel hasn't forgiven herself for leaving Barry at the altar and is still terrified at not being able to prove she can take care of herself. It's hard to talk about those fears but it's what they needed to do.

@@michelleleach4880 So are you implying that Mark abused his position as Rachel's boss to get into her appartment or something? It's pretty easy to say NO to someone who just isn't there. Or you just don't open the door when they get there if they haven't understood the message so far. It's important to note that after these episodes, MARK himself confirms to Rachel that all of Ross' doubts were legit, that he was hitting on her, and that he literally hired her because he thought she was cute. Which is, honestly, much more sexist than Ross saying "it's just a job". And the thing is, bringing food to your overworked partner can be endearing and cute, and for example, in Friends itself, it's been done by none other than Ross and Rachel at Ross' workplace. They literally had sex, because Rachel did the exact same kind of move at Ross' workplace than he did there... on their *anniversary* . Like suuure, it was not selfless and it was just Ross being insecure, but it literally stems from unresolved tensions, fears, and insecurities within their relationship, because of *both* of them. It's also pretty close-minded to say that Ross "stormed out". Ross walked out of the argument, that was clearly leading in a direction that NONE of them wanted, Rachel herself admitted to it, the next morning. They needed to cool down, which is what Ross offered to Rachel, seconds before she clearly said "taking a break from US". Like, I'm sorry, I read that as breaking up too, why would you use these words if you don't mean them? Rachel can't go being all flippant with someone else's feelings, especially not when you know Ross is an insecure guy who got cheated on by his freaking wife! Outside of who is right or who is wrong, it's really unhealthy to talk about "storming out" when someone removes themselves from either stressful or hurtful situations. Walking out of an argument to calm down IS NOT immature or "storming out", actually I'd argue what's immature is saying things you don't mean to say, such as "I want to take a break from us" and actually... hurt someone you love. 🤷‍♀

I personally don't like that this situation leads to a never ending argument of "we were/weren't on a break". For me it's not at all what matters here. What matters is the feelings of the parties involved. What is the use of "objectively speaking" when one person feels betrayed by another, loses trust in them and can't forgive them (if just for now). They have the right to feel that way. One can't really do much about it. You can't force a person to forgive and forget, even if half of the world takes your side in this argument. @@Becksnnc I don't even think Rachel did nothing wrong. I know she was frustrated and emotional when she told Ross she wanted a break, but she admits later that she didn't want a break, so asking for one was something wrong. I also agree that she should have found a better work-life balance, but I understand that up to this point she hadn't actually done anything for herself that made her feel fulfilled like this career did, and I think Ross should have tried harder to understand that, instead of trying harder to get between her and Mark and by extension between her and her career. All of that said, he shouldn't have taken the first opportunity after being on a break to go sleep with someone else, and he certainly shouldn't have tried to hide it from her. He's correct they were technically on a break, and she herself tells people they were "broken up", but just because he's technically right doesn't mean he is free from consequences, and the consequence is losing his relationship with Rachel. She also has every right to not forgive him for sleeping with someone else and to view it as cheating, despite what I just said about them being "broken up" at the time

I think this was the episodes that sealed the series at a "Must watch" when the series first came out. Instead of making it all comedy, it got emotional. And the acting in the fight scene was so down to earth. Not in a soap opera way but just relatable. I have to take Ross' side in the fight though. Ross was in an emotional disaster zone. And the Cloe took advantage of where he was at. She gave Ross Beer and manipulated him to do things he did not want to do. Ross may not have handled the after math well, but he was still a wreck and in a panic. It was not his fault that Cloe went and told someone which went 7-ways-to-Rachel. He tried to stop it before it got to Rachel so he could tell her. Honestly, I blame Mark and Cloe.

This is so hard to watch and honestly I keep forgetting how incredibly well written and acted the breakup scene/talk was. It feels deep and real, when usually this show does a great job portraying hardship as "barely an inconvenience". I also feel the cheating would have been more understandable had we watched them grow apart for months or a year. I would have understood Ross better. But this show is centered around the group always hanging out so they couldn't portray it well and Ross just seems immature and impatient and selfish.
@Heida77

Aww dude you were so happy in the beginning but I knew what was coming. I completely agree that once Ross slept with someone else nothing else mattered. I don't care if they were or weren't on a break. It doesn't justify Ross sleeping with someone else THE SAME NIGHT. EVEN IF they had broken up FOR GOOD it would not be okay, let alone just "on a break". That doesn't mean Rachel did nothing wrong or that Ross didn't have a reason to be upset, but he DID overreact. I get he was burned after Carol, but his trust issues were HIS issues that HE needed to work on. Rachel was not Carol. Yes, Rachel was prioritising her job over Ross, which was wrong. But how many times have men prioritised their job over their partner/family and no one seems to think that is a problem? It's such a double standard. Rachel finally had a job she loved and instead of supporting her, Ross went all crazy jealous over Mark who Rachel wasn't even interested in. He should've trusted Rachel regardless of Mark (btw I think we all hate Mark as he obviously had bad intentions). Ironically, Ross's jealousy and paranoia just drove her further away from him and into Mark's arms (even though nothing happened). Sure, Rachel could've been more grateful and payed more attention to him than her work, but he was too needy and clingy that it just drove her away even more. Yet she was not the one who cheated, Ross was. Because he thought Rachel was cheating on him. Just the thought of her being with someone else upset him so much (even though they were on a 'break') he went to bed with another woman. And, EVEN IF Rachel had in fact slept with Mark it still doesn't justify him doing the same thing. The main problem is the lack of communication. Ross didn't even listen to what Rachel had to say, he just heard Mark's voice and hung up. Rachel could have been more attentive to Ross's feelings and Ross could have just been honest with Rachel. Instead he jumped to conclusions and went to bed with someone else. He was also so adamant to hide it from her and not taking responsibility which made it SO much worse. I will always love Roschel but I will never pretend that their relationship wasn't unhealthy at times. And even though they both made mistakes in the relationship, I am 100% Team Rachel on this. Anyway, I think we can all agree those scenes in Monica and Rachel's apartment are absolutely heartbreaking. In fact, it was so emotional that both David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston couldn't stop crying while filming it. On another note, "With or Without You" by U2 is the song playing at the end of 3x15 when Ross tells Chloe he likes that song and Rachel is at home calling Ross. It's the same song Ross dedicated to Rachel on the radio in 2x08 "The One with the List". Furthermore, the song playing in the recap in 3x16 is the same song that played when Ross and Rachel had their first kiss in 2x07 "The One Where Ross Finds Out".

Probably the biggest culprit in all of this who does not get mentioned at all is that girl. If the roles were reversed we would easily say that the man took advantage of the woman. To be its the same here. The girl took advantage of Ross and kept pushing herself on him. I believe about 9/10 people who were in that same situation, thinking the relationship was over, feeling depressed, alcohol in his system and having this woman push herself like that, would also succumb. Other culprits are Joey and Chandler. They should have took care of Ross and at least keep an eye on him if not actively try to make him feel better. They just left him by himself while they had fun. Only terrible friends do that.

The main point is that if Ross had wanted to be with Rachel and stay with her, he never should have slept with the other girl, regardless of if they were broken up or on a break in his mind. He knew that it would have been a dealbreaker for her, especially if they weren't broken up which he didn't even know because he hadn't talked to Rachel. In my mind, if they are on a break, that means that they plan to get back together after a short time. Ross just acted like they were broken up and then was surprised when there were consequences to his actions after he found out they weren't.

I always HATE the fact that they just brush over the fact that Rachel had Mark over right after they broke up. Yes, Ross sleeping with a girl after he got drunk was wrong. But that they never have a discussion as to why Mark was there literally a couple hours after the whole thing annoys the heck out of me. They BOTH made mistakes. The concept of it all being Ross' fault is incorrect. and yes, they were on a break. I hate these episodes. I mean amazing acting by Jennifer and David. But just the whole thing how Ross tries to put the blame of him sleeping with someone else onto Rachel. He storms out when Rachel suggested a break, then assumes Rachel is sleeping with Mark, does not let Rachel explain why Mark is there. She tries to explain but Ross just hangs up on her and does not listen, then goes to sleep with Chloe, tries to hide it from her and then when he gets caught tries to justify his actions by saying he THOUGHT Rachel was cheating on him too. His own insecurities led to this situation. And the whole "We were on a break" is just so ridiculous and not valid. Cause even if they had broken up for good, that is still some fast moving on.... "Bullets have left guns slower". Rachel had every right being mad and heartbroken.

You were right there with them, saying all the right things like telling Ross to stop shifting the blame and own it. You're a good man. That bit when Ross is saying all the things he'll miss about Rachel, and then her saying "I thought you were someone who would NEVER hurt me" just makes me ball. That's the crux of the matter right there, such a betrayal of trust and love. I'm sorry you had to watch it and experience it, but it's part of the journey of watching Friends unfortunately. This pair of episodes is such a hard watch! It always sucks when characters you love (and Ross) make mistakes. Jen & David killed it with their performances, though! I could write essays about these episodes, and Ross' character overall, but I think I'll just say that Ross' inability to take accountability for his own choices is one of the most frustrating aspects of the entire show. Ross wasn't entirely to blame here but I do think he was mostly to blame for the break up, and it's hard to see him try to bulldoze through Rachel in the last fight rather than work through their issues.

In Ross's defense, he DID have legitimate reason to think their "break" was permanent. Yeah, he screwed up, no question, but he is not the only one at fault, and it absolutely disgusts me how many people act like he is. Here are the facts: Rachel had been acting extremely distant toward Ross recently. She then got angry with him when he tried to do something nice for her (which, admittedly, he also should not have done, but that's not the point.) She then told him that she expects him to take a permanent backseat to her job if that's what it takes for her to be happy. She then told him she didn't want to be with him any more. There is no difference between "we need a break" and "I don't want to be with you anymore." Anyone who says otherwise is lying either to you or to themselves. And then, the very instant he tries to fix things, literally the same day, he finds out (from his perspective) that HER immediate response to the break up was to invite Mark over, the guy she has repeatedly denied having feelings for (which, frankly, gives him every reason to think she has been cheating on him with Mark the entire time.) You literally criticized Ross for doing the EXACT same thing that he had every reason to believe Rachel had done first. The man was as heartbroken as it is humanly possible to be. To top it off, Ross has ever REASON to be overly jealous/protective. His literally only other serious relationship involved the woman he was married to for 7 years cheating on him for a long time before he found out. The fact that Rachel KNOWS that and is still so dismissive of Ross' concern about Mark (which turned out to be completely valid and Mark was exactly the piece of shit trying to get into Rachel's pants that Ross thought he was) is absolutely appalling on her part. It makes her look extremely self-centered (which, to be honest, she frequently is.) Yes, what Ross did was wrong. But based on the available information he had at the time it's also completely understandable why he would make the mistake that he did, and frankly it is for that very reason that Rachel's reaction is unreasonable from a logical standpoint. It's fine that she's hurt, that part makes sense. But her outright refusal to forgive Ross is downright ridiculous, ESPECIALLY when she knows he would have forgiven her had the roles been reversed. This is not a "one side is to blame" issue. They BOTH handled the relationship badly, and any reasonable human being can acknowledge that instead of picking sides.

My opinion on this breakup has always been this: Ross acted very immature about Rachel's job/Mark, Rachel definitely needed to find some more time for him though, neither were really listening to each other tbh. Concerning the "we were on a break issue"--A break is a break-up for all intensive purposes. Sure, it's implied to be temporary but that doesn't matter. (Honestly, this show popularized the whole idea). Ross didn't cheat, but what he did do was lie to Rachel. He attempted to cover up his actions, which caused her to find out what happened in a humiliating manner. It also withheld something from her that may have changed her mind about getting back together. She had the right to know. He didn't necessarily have to tell her while the copy girl was at the apartment, but basically asap afterwards, yes. I think the issue here was ultimately his deceit afterwards, though the bigger problem was their overall communication problems. So he's right in that they were indeed broken up, he didn't cheat, but she's correct in that he's a liar, and untrustworthy. (This is also like the third or fourth time he's messed up specifically with Rachel after listening to Joey & Chandler's advice).

The thing is when Ross and Rachel first started out, Ross missed dates too because of work. He was called into the museum, had to make Rachel wait while he worked, but Rachel waited and was patient with him throughout all of it. It just seems that Ross values his time more than her time, plus the whole Mark jealousy thing, plus he blows things out of proportion that made a bigger mess of things. Plus the guy can't take responsibility ever. Golden child syndrome. He always had to be right. I'm not saying Rachel was right the whole way through. She could've handled things diffrrently. But I just find Ross to be toxic, and their whole relationship too.

Ross and Rachels break up has always been a very divisive thing ever since the episode aired. Ive had countless arguments with people over it, simply because i dont feel what Ross did was wrong. In the sense of happening way too quickly? yes, he fucked up there, but two people being on a break? he was always in the right on that. Taking a break is by all intents the same as breaking up but with the caveat of re-evaluating whether or not they want to stay together or not. This often, and ive seen this MANY times, includes seeing other people. Thats not to say im invalidating Rachels feelings on the matter, she has every right to feel hurt about it, but when you put yourself into Ross shoes, and when he did the right thing and called, to then hear the very guy hes been concerned about the entire time is there with his now possible ex girlfriend immediately afterwards? I dont want to say Ross was justified, but that comes off exactly the same as what everyone gets on his ass about. So yeah, ill always die on the hill that Ross didnt do anything wrong in the context of taking a break, just did so way too quickly.
