@clayfame Nah, dudes got a point. It's not just police this shit happens with, what's the wider moral issue. It's not the system its the type of people it attracts. Once you take on a group identity you're more willing to defend against something that challenges the stability of your group. But not only that you also have the problem of it just being human nature to stand by and watch, no matter what we're more likely to just stand and let things happen rather than step in. Doesn't make us bad people but it certainly opens up a lot of bad interpretations of you. I work at McDonalds, when I see a co-worker do something wrong, 5/10 times it's because I don't realize what they're doing can be potentially dangerous or wrong. The other 5 times it's because I don't wanna introduce more issues that may complicate the situation more, someone above me will most likely handle it much more effectively than I would. In the police example, my General Manager would be Internal affairs, they look at the cases from the outside in and most of the time if an officer does something wrong they're punished, whether it's being fired so they have to move departments, or having an investigation launched into them for other reasons. Cops in america aren't as untouchable as the general population thinks. In fact there is a decent group of officers have had their lives stripped from them for small IA battles like Sexual assault claims and other bs that a lot of people trying to get out of being arrested would say. Solution: Give officers better guidelines as to what to do in these situations. Teach them leadership type perspective. Show them that when something goes wrong, not just in combat, but with civil, internal, and social issues you need to take control, assess and eliminate the threat of something WORSE happening. We teach our officers how to be great shooters and to have a good combat ready mindset, but we don't transfer those same beliefs over to their morals. Gotta have some philosophy ingrained into your morals before you go to war, or else everything you know to be true will get stripped from you in combat and there's no coming back from being ill prepared to meet death and sorrow.

Yes, every parent needs to have "the talk" with their kids. And a lot of people whose parents failed to have the talk need to learn this on their own. Teaching the kids to have an inner rage against cops, and valorizing pushing back at them as laudable, just leads to unwise and pointless problems. Survive the situation, collect information, don't tell them more than they need to know, be polite, cooperate but do not try to please them. And then sort out any problems later. That's true for all races, for all sexes, for people with lots of tattoos or long haired males - don't lose your cool with police.

Yes, we all need to have this conversation with young kids, teens, and even adults. We’re all vulnerable to being abused, misled, lied to, or mistreated by the police. However, just as we need to have this conversation of how we’re supposed to act around police, we need to have a conversation of how the police are supposed to act around us. If we feel unsafe around police all the time, maybe the police need to understand and change the way they act around us. People always say “well if they complied that wouldn’t have happened,” but sometimes complying is still not enough. We need to discuss what happens even when you do comply, the officer still continues to escalate, what do we do then? I’m white and am still scared of the cops when pulled over, but I know damn well that I’m thankful to not be black and pulled over. Why is it that we can’t admit this? Why is it that it has to be this way in the first place? Just like Aba and Preach said, let’s have a conversation about it.

Sometimes, people latch onto a particular thing mentioned and they lock it in. They have to hold onto that in order to break it down otherwise they may forget their own argument. Like when someone makes a list of stuff they have "an argument about" but they don't actually make an argument. Listener can't argue every point back 'cause any human being can't logically argue multiple points back because there's no way for the other person listening now to follow that kind of information dump.
@ImPDK

I think people are afraid to be wrong because, even when they were growing up, making mistakes was associated with being humiliated or laughed at sometimes even by the teachers. That's why nobody wants to admit they're wrong. We need a culture that encourages people to admit when they're wrong and that has one simple idea deeply intregated in everything we do: It's okay to be wrong.
@FaithsStardust
@FaithsStardust 4 года назад
ImPDK It’s also hard to admit when you are ‘wrong’ when you are speaking on behalf of a whole entire group of people - as ultimately, we are individuals 🤷🏾‍♀️ It can be hard, to take blame for a generalisation, if the notion doesn’t apply to you. I think in these situations, it’s always better to come from a third person perspective/ a third eye - you can recognise fault amongst ‘your own’ without taking sole responsibility (as you shouldn’t have to IF the notion doesn’t apply to you) whilst still addressing & recognising wider issues.

You are right on point. I've lived half my life in Japan where I was born and half in different parts of USA. A good friend of mine is half black and white. I'm half Japanese and white. Things that I had learned about the harsh realities of racism would bring me to tears I couldn't understand how in our modern day and age that horrible atrocities against black Americans could happen I couldn't understand why all the hate and why callous acts existed. He explain to me that this was so deep-rooted that this is actually a part of America my parents went through harsh times being a mixed marriage I was born shortly after the American occupation in Japan so I saw the things that my parents went through and against me as a part of the war. My father married the enemy. so I really had no clue about the conflict against black Americans which was confusing to me. Once I listened to what he'd explained to me it made me realize,not only the hatred being passed to generations but the fears and ignorance of the lack of unwilling ears and eyes that won't see, has created a weird wall of conflict. For lack of a better explanation. I know exactly what it feels like to have somebody tell me what I am and how much more they know then I about my own people. My parents never expressed any differences between people .I have been raised in such a mixed- race of culture and diversity but mainly half Japanese that I didn't realize that America would seem so backward at times when I thought having different cultures was just something that make things better not to be treated as something that's not accepted. My friend told me that was one of the things he like about me maybe I guess it was my innocence or how it affected my heart I don't know but I know that if I hadn't have listened to him I would not have understood. And then you would crack a joke about rice and that's what I really loved about him, he could make me laugh.

I have to say your story caught me off guard. I have never been outside of the United States so I have no real life experiences of interacting with people other cultures on their native soil. Being an avid reader, a lover of history and an aficionado of documentaries I have been exposed to a wide range of the stories, experiences and points of views of a wide variety of people in a wide variety of cultures. Japanese, especially Japanese living in Japan, have been expressed to have extremely racist feelings towards anyone who is not Japanese including a prejudice and dislike of other Asian cultures. Now I will say that I have never met any Japanese person who has been anything but polite and kind but sometimes there seems to be just a general distaste while interacting with me. However, considering the amount of tattoos and piercing I have most people interact with me under the assumption that I will be rude, angry, uneducated, or, and I do kind of dislike this one, some kind of "woke" leftist vegan that's going to agree that eating meat is a barbaric act. Ummmmmmm........ Definitely no. I like my steak bloody, my chicken dead and my bacon doubled. I can understand how my appearance can make people uncomfortable, though in the last 20 years the extremes some people go to has made me look like Mary Poppins in comparison. Anyway, I'm digressing. Your statement is telling me that the racism and prejudices in America that have become a normal if not just expected, albeit tiresome, part of existence for myself and so many others (for the record I am white so I got assigned the really awkward role in this whole mess of a world we call political correctness. Damned if I do and damned if I don't. Even doubly damned if the other person is as white as me but keeps drinking the koolaid) is worse than anything that exists in Asian cultures, which I been led to believe was worse than ours. That makes me sad in a way I don't even think I can define. Almost a loss of innocence to discover what is daily life, while still making me cringe no longer makes me cry, could be considered to be the gold standard for a racist society. Have we truly fallen that far?

@@terrorbilly1 I also say the same about "hate crimes". IMO adding a hate crime charge on top of something is stupid. If the crime is that bad change the sentencing guidelines. I am pretty sure that when a crime is committed the criminal hates the person they are going after, at least at that moment. It's only "crimes of passion" where people can say that they may have loved the person they attacked. I was never a fan of hate speech or hate crime labels. It's all hate or all crime. By saying hate crime it makes it sound like the other crimes are love crimes. We already know that adding a hate crime tag on with the other crime doesn't deter squat. And with liberals demanding less jail time and more rehabilitation why are we adding crimes that really are kind of made up? If someone shoots someone they aren't going to stop and say no wait, I better find someone of my same race because I don't want that hate crime tagged on. Let me say it now if another race does a crime against me and I die I do not want a hate crime tagged onto it, not that it happens much when it is a white person on the wrong end. I just want them to get the full extent of punishment whatever that may be. Also, let me make it clear that no, I am not the forgiving type. I don’t know why but this almost seems like a perfect analogy for race in America. Take Caucasian people as the person behind the wheel in the car and minority groups as the pedestrians. Pedestrians have the right of way, the same way minorities groups do have the right to have their human rights and dignities acknowledged, respected and effectively practiced. The law that gives the pedestrians a right of way can also be looked at as the general constitution which gives the pedestrians these freedoms and basic human right in paper and as a standard rule which everyone knows hence why discrimination based on race, religion, gender, sexual identity or expression etc, are felt with harshly - or at least, on paper and in theory, they’re felt with harshly. The Caucasian race, the person in the vehicle, has literal centuries worth of wealth and power because of their bloody background that involved oppression and the intuitions they built which benefit them, imagine the car is the influence that the Caucasian race has had for years. Whether they want to admit it or not, they have the weight of influence. Even though minority groups have every right to have access to the same privileges, and are supposed to in theory (because of the law), they don’t have the weight of the vehicle. No protection. They’ll be right in fighting for their rights but ultimately, it seems almost futile because they have to metaphorically ‘die’ to do so.

I have found it rather humorous that people who have no humility themselves have no problem preaching to others about needing more.

I agree with you and there are a lot of people that use "your truth" that way but I would like to point out that "the" truth is extremely, if not impossible, to find especially in cases of day to day crimes being committed. I think that what Mackie was saying is that sometimes there will not be enough evidence to prove your version of events. That relying on evidence that is admissible in a court of law will not always work out. The courts can truly fail people sometimes. So its important to get your story out there even if all you have is your word. This is especially important for crimes that are really just your word against theirs. Like police brutality, or rape, or even something like defamation. There can be evidence but also sometimes there's not. And regardless, if you have a story to tell, tell it. The false ones will always cause suspicion, there is nothing you can do about that. It's important to tell your story regardless. It is the truth, even if you are the only one that knows it is.

@zephsmith3499
@zephsmith3499 3 года назад
@@Danny_On_Wheels44 Let's take that a bit deeper. There are racial problems, we all agree on that. Some people may minimize that; important to recognize but not what's being explored at the moment. Some people exaggerate - why is that? I see two archetypical approaches today: (1) Analyze the problem as objectively as possible, search for the size and shape of it, try to work out what perpetuates it now (historical roots might or might not be relevant to that), brainstorm interventions and tradeoffs and undesired side effects of potential interventions, implement some of them, see if they are having the desired effect and what side effects (desired or not) are occuring, refine or backtrack and try again, repeat - always paying attention and revision one's model based on new input. (2) Buy into a narrative of oppression, try to sell that narrative, use it to guilt trip people, try to get power over others through guild and playing the victim. The key piece to note here is that this approach in NOT about speaking out an accurate portrayal of real grievances so they can be addressed in the rational manner of #1 above, it's all about getting the moral high ground, so exaggerating the grievances leads to more power. There is no payoff in this strategy for being honest, for considering the relative weights of multiple causes of things (only the cause which reinforces the narrative can be considered, and it must be the only cause that matters). Just do whatever is necessary to reinforce the oppression narrative. It's OK if some of the support is actually true, but it's also OK if it's not - what matters is whether it feeds the narrative. The positive thing which has happened recently is that some people of color have brought more mainstream attention to some injustices which it can be too easy to let slide. Let's be clear, every human lets a lot of stuff slide, we cannot be authentically engaged in every injustice in the world, it would be too overwhelming. Information overload. So it's not evil, it's necessary. AND it's also true that in our own society, many people of one group (especially a larger one) can be mostly unaware of problems facing many people of another group (especially a smaller one). So shining a light can be very appropriate. What is not so good is the distortion and seeking of the moral high ground, and seeking power over others based on an exaggerated victimhood narrative. Stampeding people based on emotional manipulation without intellectual honesty. Anyway, the key thing to pay attention to, I believe, is WHY the exaggeration occurs (eg: hyper-vigilance leading to seeing racism everywhere all around us), what is the need or desire and what is the payoff. Try not to get distracted by the dysfunctional strategy, feel out the underlying need. Look for a healthier way to meet the underlying need. Seek for win/win as a first choice - based on the underlying need, not always in accord with the other person's initial strategy for getting that need met.

I had a real sobering experience when. I was in high school and working in a kitchen. I'm white and the guy I worked with 80% of the day was black. I had my car stolen one day and freaked out. He said "call the police, describe your car, and give them the license plate number" I said "I don't know the plate number" and his exact sentence was "well how do you prove to the police you aren't stealing your car?" He legitimately was raised being told he needed to know that his plate number because he may be seen by a cop trying to break into his car if he locked his keys in it. I being the white suburban kid never even thought I might one day be accused of breaking into my own car. Did I feel it was unjsut, yes. Did he feel it was unjust, yes. However him getting aggressove with that cop won't help him, and me pretending like I understand the fear he feels when he has to break into his own car because he left the keys in the ignition is disingenuous and belittling of his experience.

There are plenty of cases where I think I am justified in beginning from a place where I already know what is true and am not going to change my mind (flat-Earthers, anti-vaxxers, etc.) But sometimes it is possible to understand even grossly wrong points of view better, which still requires listening. Even as a white dude my Dad explained to me constantly. "If a cop pulls you over, keep your hands on the wheel, and respect them." I can't even count how many times he kept telling me this when I first got my DL, I'm pretty sure it was every time I took the car for any reason. I got pulled over an ass ton during HS and first few years of college. Most times they were nice, let me go on my way. Only two seemed to have it out for me and gave me the max they could on the ticket. I could've made all of those encounters into big fines or even cuffs if I tried to. Hell I nearly got suspended in my first week of driving and was lucky the DA assistant cut me a break only giving me 6 points instead of 12, all cause I was on time to the court and the cop said I was respectful to him. If more parents have that conversation with their children and stress how important it is then I'm willing to bet not only will those bad incidences go down, but eventually it will lead to less reactionary cops in the end, as they will feel more respected then they currently do.

I've worked Retail, and Security jobs for over 25 years. All of these jobs had videos and/or classes on how to identify if someone is about to commit a crime. When I worked at a chain video store (yes, I'm that old), they showed how greeting someone and watching how they respond, could signal someone about to commit a robbery. I've used that to this day, because it was sound advice. When you come into my store I look for one thing, your attitude as you walk in. You can see if someone is looking up and for cameras, on drugs, if they are even looking at the merch. Your attitude speaks volumes to those you interact with. When you don't want to listen to what someone has to say, they don't want to listen to you. BTW the guys in the robbery video were some white WWF rejects. Look like they came out of a bad 80's flick.

There are a few issues I would say: One is that we often disregard the racism that exists outside of the white race, either that or we redefine race in such a way that non-whites can't be racist (which I think is just wrong). The issue of good cops not reporting bad cops seems to be more of a human issue. It's something that seems prevalent in most communities/groups. The 'stop snitching' or 'snitches get stitches' philosophy speaks to that same idea. You need to have a value system that sits above allegiance to any group/organization/emotion. The most impactful change I've been able to make in conversation is starting from a position of NOT trying to 'win'. I enter with the understanding that I might be wrong, that I want to learn and better myself or AT LEAST understand another person's perspective(s). It totally changes the way you interact, your demeanour, the words you use, the tone, et al. It's helped me to have productive conversations with people I vehemently disagree with.

Sorry to say that I had never heard of you guys before watching this video, but I am impressed. You guys are on point. Not only do you express and support your points well and use clear examples (e.g. the screen levelness and brightness), but you also do an excellent job of showing what the opposite of actual listening looks like. One thing that you said that was particularly insightful is that people often simply don't know that they don't know something or are just unaware that what they think they know is actually wrong or incomplete. Also, a lot of conflict arises from simple misunderstanding in communication. Two people both with the best of intentions can come to conflict simply because they wrongly assume that the mental image that they have of whatever is being discussed is the same as what the other person has. For example, if I'm from California and talk about a really big tree, I may be thinking about a Sequoia, but if I'm talking to a Pacific Islander, he may have a picture of a coconut tree in his mind. But then I can't understand it when he says climbing that big tree would be no problem. So many things can cause a potentially positive interaction between people to go bad; differences in cultural background or experience, circumstance, vocabulary choice, etc. As you say, though, actually listening to understand and creating a rapport where respectful questioning is OK is vital. Thank you gentlemen for your much needed public service.

Aight, story time. I grew up in an area where everyone around me was white. I was poor. The term "dirt floor poor" would apply. We had one black kid in our school. The thing I noticed. The same people who belittled me for being poor, taunted him because of the color of his skin. Years later I moved to College Park Maryland. I work construction so I'm in and out of Home Depots quite a lot. I went to the College Park Home Depot and (for the first time in my life at 19) I was the minority. It's definitely different. I'd say many white people are just not used to black people especially white people who come from an area where the general population is completely White. My personal opinion is that many white people feel threatened when in the presence of black people because of ignorance and the fact of just flipping on the TV. I've met a lot of black people who are awesome. Yet when I go to a family reunion no one knows this. Mainstream media is the biggest promoter of racism. The news only reports the bad things in life. I feel a lot of people are ignorant to the fact that there are a lot of good people in the world. Crazy thing, 20 years ago, my brother and I had a boss who decided he needed to go to Washington DC for some drugs. We were in the middle of southeast DC. We were the minority LOL yet everybody that we encountered was cool as shit. Everyone that we encountered also had a firearm LOL we were not in the pleasant part of town, yet everyone was cool 😎 I just don't get where all this racism comes from, other than the fact that the mainstream media only shows you the derogatory side of race.

I'll be 50 years old in October and I've had one job and that was at Wendy's in 1985, I've got my first car a year later and turned it into a personal taxi, saved up some money and used that money to buy a piano to learn and the rest is history, It's just best to be self-employed and not have to answer to anybody or keep silent because you see some BS going on and you don't want to lose your job or generally just get paid below your worth, being in control of how much money you make is the best feeling in the world

@@brickcitybikeman3108 Everyone wants to be self employed, but it's easier said than done, especially if you want to make a decent living as an artist like in your case, I'm glad you actually managed to make it but not everyone can be as lucky. I mean I'm kind of trying to do the same but instead of Piano I chose programming, so we'll see how that goes, but sadly in today's system not everyone can be winners.

The reason we're so concerned about it is because all of this was abolished a while ago and we were all doing great until democrats started to condition everyone to hate white people. It's going way beyond just "sit down and listen" to just people of color everywhere hating and generalizing us all of being tyrants and nuisances because we're white. The majority of white people aren't racist OR tyrants, people who say these things have to take a step out of their little bubbles and go out and see the rest of the world. Because these americanized morons always screaming "racist" and generalizing white people who claim white people are the problem for everything they go through know NOTHING about history and other races/cultures, because if they did they'd know that ALL RACES have taken part in slavery and despicable acts. People need to learn to stop playing the victim and blaming others and start taking accountability for their actions.

I live in Scotland, my blood is Irish and the bloodline goes back on this island to before the Romans invaded, we were just a tribe called "The people of the deer" I grew up poor, big family, hand me down clothes either my brothers or a cousin, meals made from left overs. No car, no vcrs, nothing. I've never been to America. Do you know how much shit I get from some folks in America these days just because they see white skin in a picture? Racist is the least I get, yet when you consider that in Scotland it's actually Irish catholic people who are the minority most likely to be attacked verbally/physically according to crimes statistics etc, I'm used to being called shit by ignorant people so it doesn't get to me. The hypocrisy of getting called "entitled and privileged" by people who have had more privilege and entitlement in their lives than I is something that I can't stay silent on. Go watch a film called the outsiders and you should see that things zren't about skin tone.

Normally I don't even comment on RU-vid but how can you say listen to each other and blame the Democratic party for ALL of the division. There is heavy division from both parties and typically in my experience there are extremes on both ends. I lean Democratic but I acknowledge Republican values as well. You only create more division with statements like this and discredit an entire group of people instead of having any type of meaningful conversation.

@@Samogm Because Democrat leadership are the ones who generally push the tribalism and racial rhetoric. I'm not referring to all democrats but those qualities are pretty distinctly left. Actual racists are reviled from people on the right but because they disagree with the lefts premise and solutions they are called racists, supremacists, and Nazi's. The left also sees people as skin tones with a general shared experience and the right sees people as individuals. I'm libertarian and don't like government having their dirty fingers in everything and I'm grouped in with the republicans because my political view points don't align with the left's. The democrat party is built on a house of cards and will fall apart into chaos once they lose their big bad enemy to fight against. The separate tribes that make up the left right now hate each other and the victim hood ideology is not sustainable. There are other extreme problems like dieing legacy media fueling the flames in their bid to stay relevant with lies, hate and outrage clicks regardless off political affiliation (they're all equally garbage), big tech siding with a political party and heavily censoring the other. Politicians playing political games with Covid, destroying the economy or republicans not reigning in Big techs oligopoly, censorship, and anti trust business practices in 4 years. Politicians on both sides getting away with shit constantly and not having universal standards that are applied equally and punished. (they accuse trump of inciting riots while Harris actively bailed out and encouraged rioters and they sure as hell aren't going to impeach her) The Biden administration right now actively seeking to remove or reduce the rights of law abiding citizens and increase surveillance on individual citizens online activity (this is on his campaign page). Obviously stated in way to imply its for every ones good and to protect from harassment/harm regardless of any factual evidence to the contrary. Biden has also talked about packing the supreme court and basically throwing checks and balances into the wind. So, ive pretty much figured out how to sneak anything past the American public, call yourself a democrat and say your doing it to help the minorities, call the other guys racists and orange man bad. (this was Biden's campaign in a sentence). Again, if you got through this absurdly large post this is not representative of individual people who are democrat voters but of their leadership and i focused on them mostly because they currently making the decisions for the next 2 years at least. So, we've got a pretty large gap to cross for any real common ground to be found and It won't be the politicians or media who does it as they seek to do the exact opposite.

"Good cops don't report bad cops enough" Possible. In situations where an officer is working alone, it is nearly impossible to tell. It would take a lot of investigation by his or her supervisor after many complaints filed by upstanding citizens. It is quite difficult to pinpoint, not that it shouldn't be dealt with.

Not to mention that bad cops might not have any compunctions about killing a good cop who turns them in, or his/her family members. We had a local police theft ring in a nearby small town, stealing and reselling guns and personal property from homes, taking things that weren't evidence when investigating (see-railroading) innocent citizens, etc. Their police chief disappeared under suspicious circumstances-left his car by a riverbank, with his uniform, gunbelt, wallet on the seat, and a note that said "he was leaving town". He was never found, and in fact their was no investigation. My guess is he was going to turn his thieving brethren in, and they disappeared him for his effrontery. It doesn't make keeping silent right, but it DOES make it understandable.
