Yes, I think the country names are, indeed their real names and human names are used solely not to book a restaurant under "United Kingdom Of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" or have your ID card say "Rzeczpospolita Polska", because, well, that would not sound believable to anyone besides the highest goverment officials and other nations.

i thought they were a way to talk about hetalia in public without sounding weird and telling people you ship countries. and so if you visit north korea you don't have to say 'america' when talking about hetalia to your friend.
personally, I use their human names in any AU I write because constantly writing their nation name gets repetitive and boring. hence why I use a mixture of both depending on the scene or what is going on. with a friend I refer to them as their nation names becuase then its easier to keep track about who is being talked about but she's aware that i use human names. tht and there's more nicknames by adding human names
But I’m pretty sure the nations’ real identities aren’t that much of a secret to others based on what I've seen in the series... and that includes police officers presumably. And they don’t actually try to keep it as a secret. Hence they only use it for special purposes such as the false news and commercials.

I'm more used to refer to the characters with human names tho, because is kinda embarassing talking about hetalia in public and trying to explain a situation and be like "then Italy said "GERMANYYY", and Germany was like-", i think people will give me really weird looks, that's because i try to avoid using countries names in public, lmao.

I think they also evolve and adapt their names too. Like say, Spain would have had a long ass human name like Antonio Lorenzo Cruz Fernando y Carriedo back in the colonizing day, but in modern day he would be Antonio Fernando-Carriedo. Or maybe even Hong Kong; im pretty sure he is stated to have neither a canon nor a suggested name by Himaruya, but he would likely have both a chinese and a british name. This might even apply to other former colonies. Seychelles would likely have an african and a french name. There couldve been influence from historical figures as well. Maybe also America being Alfred F Jones came from Harry S Truman--the single letter being a middle name, not an initial. Or even Russia; Ivan the Great and Terrible (both accurate to him poor baby) I think they would even have spelling changes because you know, westerners lmao. India couldve been Hari but was made it into Harry. Or Matthew (Canada) used to be Mathieu from english and french influence. I also like that Germany is JUST ludwig. The name itself isnt really uncommon, but no surname was a really old timey thing. But also think that their names would or should be somewhere between "most common name" and "slightly unique". China's name is Yao Wang, Wang being VERY common while Yao kinda common, but not as popular (as it was before). If anything, i think Yong or Yan-tao would be better for him. Philippines and Mexico would have better names than maria something juan something carriedo something . Probs something like Ysabelle Raya Panganiban and Zenon Valdez Aitza (i know fanon doesnt count but whatevs thats what i think) One thing that also confuses me is the italy brothers' names. Why Vargas? Its more Spanish than Italian. Ricci, Di Angelo or Rossi would be better. But also, what with the romano and veneziano thing? They are already lovino and feliciano so south and north italy wouldve been just fine.

Actually, Veneziano and Romano were the Italies names before they got human names. They're a way to distinguish them without calling them 'North' and 'South'. Veneziano means 'of Venice', while Romano means 'of Rome'. Lovino and Feliciano, incidentally, aren't actually Italian first names and are much more commonly used as surnames. Antonio is also more Italian than Spanish. As for the Ludwig thing, Himaruya said there was a reason for it but never explained what that reason was. Some fans tie it in with the Germany = HRE theory (there was a Holy Roman Emperor who was just called Ludwig with no surname).
I don't think they do this intentionally, but people use human names in fanfiction because it's more comfortable that way. The characters in Hetalia aren't human, so it's difficult to connect to someone that has a country name instead of human. Hetalia is an anime that antropomorphizes nations, but it's more man like to have a "normal" human name. It's easier to connect that way with the character. It's interesting looking this from the human perspective. That which for us would be the alias is their name, and the human name is the alias.
Oof, this is pretty helpful! Previously I wrote their level of closeness as being "Country name in English --> Country name in speaker's language --> Human name" (Austria --> Österreich / Autriche, etc --> Roderich --> Roddy / Rod) though I suppose next time I'll just stop at "Österreich". Maybe cut out the "Reich". Though I think a large part of it definitely is the weirdness of writing with country names XD like if I'm writing in the library there is no way in hell I am writing "Switzerland knew that Austria would always stay by his side. Now that I think about it, that might be a good explanation for why some of the nations don’t have defined human names (e.g. ukraine and dennmark, who both have multiple recommended first names) They more or less can’t choose or don’t think about them much. In Denmark’s case I kinda feel like he’s forget what human name he had and say “just call me ___”
Not sure if anyone's mentioned this already or not, but there was another instance of human names being used in a World Stars strip. I think the context was Japan or someone watching an American commercial where the human on screen referred to America as Alfred. But, just like in your example, it was to make America appear more like a regular human in that instance (as it was a commercial, he may have even just been playing a role).
You're correct. That was the comic! I think that not every human knows about personifications or knows about their own, so nations adopting their own personas for stuff like jobs is really clever.
i use human names a lot, especially when talking about the characters with my friends or online to avoid confusion with the actual country because it just looks weird to people who don't know the series when i refer to countries using gendered pronouns

I try to avoid country names in my fanfics coz my otp is amechu (strange I know) and welp if you are not living under a rock for the past few years you should know that their relationship irl is hmmmm, so country names? Not a good idea for me , but I mean you do you man, I’m not picky about other people’s fanfics And for those like ‘but you can just use canon material and ignore reality!’ I love this ship because of their irl relationships (yes I know very sensitive topic) and it’s the main basis of the ship (at least the part that I know of) but himaruya did bless this ship with some good stuff tho albeit very little

It's pronounced like this because in polish letter E never makes the sound of the english double E. Most letters make the same sound every single time, the exception being the letter combinations of sz, cz, dz, dż, dź, dzi, si, ci, ni and zi. Other than that, the letters are consistent and make the same sound in every word of polish origin, so if you learn it once the pronounciation is obvious. Okay, I accidentaly started giving a polish lesson, I'll stop now-
Italy's name is not just italy, because both him and Romano are Italy, Italy Veneziano (after Venice in the north part of Italy) and Italy Romano (after Rome in the south part of Italy), we just use it like that, to differentiate them. And then their human names are Feliciano Vargas and Lovino Vargas respectively.
@Table For 1 As someone who lived in Sweden for a while, I can say... I don't even know if Berwald is even a name (anymore???? if it was at all) in Sweden. My Swedish friends have never even *heard* of a man named Berwald unless Berwald was like, his surname, or he was non-Swede. My (American) friend and I refuse to call him "Berwald" and instead stick with Sweden, or we use alternate *actual* Swedish names for Sweden.
Another example is when America is in a commercial to advertise a comb and is refered to as Alfred instead of America. It also makes sense all of their true names are their country names, being even after Nicco Nicco was no longer a country, he was still refered as Nicco Nicco. That being said, I do have a theory that their human names may have been what they were originally called before becoming countries, since it is canon that every country were born as humans at one point. So, they could have been given their human names as their birth names before changing them to their country name, since all their country names are girl names and why would you name your little boy Sarah or Rachael, but that’s up for debate. Yes, France is a girl name, so is Russia, England, America, Germany and Switzerland.
Uh where did you hear that they were humans first? In Iceland's story in the World Stars manga he starts off as a country. He straight up just pops into existence and even asks how was he born and stuff like that. So far none of the nations were originally human. I think maybe Nico Nico was, but even then he's said to be a "special case".
That’s actually a really good question. Of course they’re just personified country’s but where did they exactly come from and WHY do they exist? They sound and behave like humans. Pretty sure their bodies are the same as humans. They get tired and and shit like that. I’m trying to think of a theory but I can’t really think of one. Sorry for ranting about this question ehelsbs.
@@vampzyxo But then again, I don't think they get tired as easily as humans, or don't need to eat as often (if they need to at all?) and don't get infected by human germs (they get sick when economy goes bad and stuff like that, but not due to normal diseases) and seem to be able to recover from any and all injuries, including being shot in the head and burned alive... so they certainly are different species than humans and unlike any known lifeform. I suppose they're spirits that can create a physical form for themselves?

In the fanfic the so called "country personifications" are in fact spirits/deities that decents from ancient god/goddesses(some are the world creators in each legends). They later got human forms and worshipped as spirits of nations. For example, America is the son of Quetzalcoatl, he went to North America after Maya civilization disappeared, years later England found him and named him America. Sadly the other countries' back stories are not deep into detail yet(This is the author's idea, not mine)
