Kate Cavanaugh, here on YT, is also doing the 100k in Q4 challenge. Sarra Cannon is doing a rough draft challenge for November and will probably expand that multiple times during the year.
loveee these goals! the winter writing goal of writing 100k for three months is so great. i wish i lived in the northern hemisphere 😭 in Australia it’s always hot and summer during the holidays. hot weather is not very cosy haha
As someone who is a disabled writer….AI is not the fix 🫠 we are just as capable of reaching our goals as able bodied people even if it is a harder road!
If you ever listen to anything while reading comments, let it be this - go find book called Manifestation Hacks by Olivia Cooper, then come back and thank me
It’s so cathartic to hear your thoughts on AI. AI makes me so mad when it’s used for art, school, etc. I want to enjoy MAKING the art, I want to actually ABSORB what I’m being taught, not just take an easy path that doesn’t improve me or bring me joy. I hadn’t heard at all about the NaNo stance on AI. I had been planning to use NaNo as my excuse to force myself to wrap up this new outline I’ve been sitting on and actually write, but now I may need to adjust
As someone who’s never written anything or even really read books since my adhd doesn’t like them and makes me fall asleep, I have actually listened to a lot of audio books. So I’m using ai as more of a tool to help me learn and organize rather than actually writing the story for me.
I have to edit two manuscripts that I’ve worked on from earlier this year for the rest of this year. (A fantasy and a sci fi project.) I plan to write two lengthy fantasy novels next year while also submitting more queries.
This is honestly so true, I honestly just want to make writing intentional and focus on the words written rather than just saying I did something to mark off a goal.
So as someone who wasn't bothering to follow the shenanigans of the NaNo organizers, everything you just said adds up to a Pandora's Box and it goes without saying I am disappointed about it being unleashed on so many committed fans of the event. Another authortuber (I think it was Lynn D. Jung) posted a score of alternatives and that's at least a consolation. Best of luck with your palate cleansers, Ms. Lubratt. :)
Hi. ❤ Thank you for voicing your thoughts on A.I. I only use it by asking it for 3 different sentences and combine together with my main sentence - since I battle to think these days due to bad sinus and headache. Half the time my own sentence sounds better than the one's the A.I. gave. Half the time the tablets don't even work, then i take time away from my book to get better. I like a clear head when working on a scene. Sometime i can't think of a word to fit into the scene, i try a similar word on the A.I. to give more words. I have been writing for a long time, never published a book. But only started to learn on good things that i basically needed like 20 years ago. Unfortunately, I need a laptop for my main book. So on the side line, using a ok tablet and working on two different werewolf stories 😊 So would you ever consider to do aother vlog on A.I., and see if you can use your blurb from one of your book's to see what the A I think about your story. Good luck with your goals for November ❤ but I won't do it since I don't trust my health and headache. Because we are getting very hot days, since September, October and November are supposed to be spring. The way the heat is during the day, is a killer and brings out my headaches and sore eyes.
i thought the reason was going to be "i just finished my book, i'm taking a break" but noooo, no rest for Sara now that i saw mildly upset Sara i can understand the "staying out of trouble part of writing"
I remember when Nanowrimo was an idea from a book I read 15 plus years ago. And I knew they had a website to help track your word count, but up until this stuff, I didn’t know it had become an organization with opinions. I’m still probably going to try it for November, but as a neat idea for a challenge like I’ve always seen it. As for AI, I think it will come to a point that books and art created by people will be a niche or nostalgic thing.
I’m just curious, why do a lot of writers on RU-vid do code names for their books they are working on or even really talk about any details of the world or story? I do see a handful of writers actually go into details and worldbuilding but that’s very rare. I’m wondering because what I’ve been wanting to do is get my audience involved in the story and the world.
It's because most of us want to keep our ideas private. Some of us use project names because we don't have an actual title for the book. And others use project names because they want to keep their book title private.
Hi Sara! I agree with your frustration around AI, but on happier note, I'll be finishing my current draft and be doing PaCoWriMo (basically writing 110k in November, December, and January) but i'm already getting a head start and aiming for 30k this month!
I don't blame you for getting upset about AIs infiltration of that contest. I reacted that way too when I saw it duplicate my weeks of work in 10 minutes prompted by someone untrained. Now that I've been learning it more, it's really a helpful tool that reduces time on mundane tasks. It won't replace humans but it's going to be a participant in all sorts of ways. It will be what you make of it.
Have you heard that Sarra Cannon (a fellow author) is doing the Rough Draft Challenge? You might want to check that out. That’s what I am doing in November.
Hi Sara...I'm happy for your goal as a writer..right now I'm reading a book by The Belgian Georges Simenon His book The Rich Man...true story i once met Emily Griffin and she autographed her book to me in person and we both took a photo together.
AI is a great tool for writers to use as part of the process such as brainstorming or to get feedback on ideas. As for generating the novel for you, it is not. There is way too much crap flooding the market that is AI-generated.
Really? People are buying AI generated books? I thought they don't - AI generated texts, images etc are strange and scary, often we can say if something is AI generated or not...
I'm currently on a break to distance myself from my wip (which i just wrote the 2nd draft for) I will continue this break until November starts to get fresh eyes for the project. Then beginning in November and all the way through December I will edit the book while working on draft 3 and hopefully by the new year it is presentable enough to get some beta reader feedback. I think your ideas with the novellas sounds really fun and already found myself thinking of possible novella ideas, but I stopped myself. Haha. My focus is this project which I really want to be my debut novel, so I should actually work on that and not write something new... although now that i think about it... I still have 3 weeks left in October which could be time to write something shorter... hmm
Now "to do NaNoWriMo" sounds like doing a crime. It's just because the organization has the same name as the event. But for me, it is still NaNoWriMo I'll be participating. 🤘
Hey Sara, I know you probably didn’t mean it this way at all, but I do think it can be hurtful to assume that writing 50k words in a month = a bad first draft. Some people do write very, very quickly. Like for me personally, I tend to put dozens of hours of work outlining my novel in October and then once November hits, write 80k words in 30 days. That’s what works best with my energy flow and I can write with the confidence of knowing I’m on the right track since I already outlined the character arcs, plot beats, etc ahead of time. Again, I completely believe that wasn’t your intention, just wanted to offer another perspective
Hey thanks for clarifying, it was definitely not my intention! I was trying to say that some of my first drafts for NaNo were bad drafts 😂 especially because I'm not a plotter so I don't do all of the prep you're doing! Writing 50k-80k in a month is an incredible feat!!! Wasn't trying to downplay that at all :) I was just trying to emphasize that AI isn't the answer and if someone can't write 50k in a month (which is a completely reasonable thing for most people to not be able to achieve without pushing themselves like crazy) then that probably shouldn't be their goal! That is absolutely INCREDIBLE that you can write that much in a month!!
This is the same logic as making AI generated music. It’s not the same and feels disconnected from reality. The authenticity comes through from real humans.
