Dear Paul, thank you very much. I am honored and flattered! That's so nice of you and i really appreciate all the time you spent into this. Good job and great playing! :-) I rarely comment on RU-vid but a few thoughts. It's an improvised piece and i guess heavily influenced by cuban music. I am really not an expert on this, but i always loved all the Buena Vista Recordings (especially the Ibrahim Ferrer album and the Manuel Galban album). I also listened a lot to Marc Ribot and his Cubanos Postizos, which is a kind of NY-avantgarde take on cuban music. And i also hear a strong connection between these "Latin"-styles and the instrumental-guitar-twang and surfmusic of the 50s and 60s that i love so much. And of course there are jazz influences, too. All these styles are connected to one another and have a lot in common! And Paul, don't worry about the 0.5 half speed! That's what i am doing all the time...that's transcribing! Studying the music and the players we love and take as much as we can for our own development and playing. Of course! :-) Keep it coming! All the best. Tobi
It’s great to read about these influences Tobi. I had no idea where you were coming from musically, other than the obvious jazz influences. So it’s really interesting to read your words here. And maybe I’ll go download some of these artists you mention 🤔😊. For anyone else reading this thread go check out Tobi’s Instagram page, and I can definitely recommend his latest album “Slowdance” (details on Insta @tobiashoffmannmusic)
@@paulstaffordcook8799 You are doing just fine Paul. I think intrinsically we gravitate to music that touches our soul. And Tobias certainly does that. I just don’t think it is important to be as good as Tobias. Play within yourself and borrow what you can from some of these gifted musicians. I for one won’t stop listening to you because you stumble over a run of 1/64 notes. Hell,my fingers are becoming challenged by 1/4 notes. So just keep enjoying your craft and entertaining old farts like me.
So true. Unfortunately when you get to my age, most of them have passed away or moved too far away or forgotten where they put their guitar. Life gets complicated.
Hi Paul, thanks for mentioning Tobias. I was at his concert lately (some 30 people there) and it was so beautiful, so harmonic, so inspiring. Really worth seeing and hearing. You‘re an inspiration no less, so keep going!
In recovery from a total hip replacement and watching as many Tobias Hoffmann videos as I can. Not sure if it is the Oxycodone or Hoffmann’s ethereal playing that distracts me from the pain. I can see why you are hooked on this guy. For the moment anyway.😊Cheers Paul. Murray
Man, I hope you’re not in pain…? Sounds like you’ve going through quite the ordeal. I’m lucky, I’ve never had any kind of surgery thus far in my life. Well Taylort3b, I wish you a speedy recovery and I’m delighted Tobias is helping pass the time 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 pain is complimentary with joint replacement Paul. 😣 I think I am getting to the other side of it. Will be a couple weeks before I am able to get to my music room and guitars. In the meantime, horizontal with some good headphones and pain medication. Music soothes. Thanks for recommending Tobias.
I just came across all the Tobias videos and they are really great. So this video is really a great tribute to them. Really nice explanation of some of the stuff he is doing! Thank you!
There's a wealth of techniques and coloration in that piece of music. I love this channel for all the great tones, amazing guitars and beautiful playing
Well, it was you who turned me onto Tobias . . . now I have 2 terrific guitarists to listen to who bring me back to the absolute beauty of this instrument we have adopted to part of who we are. Thank you both for the inspiration and fun and joy you both provide!
Thank you for that nice tune, I really enjoyed that ...Tobias Hoffmann is my favorite guitarist atm too. Every improvised piece he does is nothing but beautiful... his love for that 60s surf stuff made his music so approachable to me.
This music transports me to a previous era...my soul is so happy to experience this. Thank you for your effort to tap in to this wonderful genre. You play beautifully, and that instrument sounds fabulous.
I appreciate your enthusiasm and reverence for Tobias. He and Julian Lage are two of my absolute favorites as well. Thanks for breaking things like this down for the hacks like me!
I have been using Tobias ideas for looping and learning some of his beautiful runs. Inspirational guitarist for me. This is some beautiful playing, so lovely
Ironically I watch Tobias on a regular basis AND I recently watched The Buena Vista Social Club after not seeing it since it first came out! All great delight! Many thanks!
I felt the Ry Cooder influence in listening to this. I heard a moment of Hawaiian and could hear the Cuban influence as well. Where Ry comes in for me is his album, Mambo Sinuendo which is another project he did in Cuba with guitarist Manuel Galvan. That album is a guitarist's treasure trove and it has this kind of beautiful emotional pull as this bit you have here. Thank you so much for sharing this one Paul. I'm listening to it again right now.....probably my 5th time. :) Simply gorgeous playing.
Paul, Words fail me really... I've been a RU-vid student and on/off guitar hack for many, many years.... Honestly, I've tried many ways to "learn" guitar too. Your teaching and enthusiasm is rare; and you are a wonderful player. It's a little like having a front row chair, with some of the guitar's most influential. I can hear a lot of stylistic influence, but don't pretend to know many of the sources you learn from... I truly appreciate the effort and insights you make available here. You truly inspire me, to dust off the budget Stratocaster again... Trust me Paul, that is High Praise indeed, coming from a very jaded and frustrated "player". I know I will be spending many hours, listening to you here and what a blessing! Your relic guitars are like guitar porn brother! Dang it you so deserve them! Sincere thanks for firing me up... Here I ago again. Now where is MY guitar ;-)
Thank you Paul,I’ve just spent the last 1hour,11mins and 32secs listening to the livestream of the quartet, performing the most amazing and interesting new genres of music I would not have been exposed to,had it not been for your influence.
Wow, that’s great Marty! Yeah, there’s a whole world of incredible talent out there. Cheers, I’m delighted Tobias and his trio are getting some recognition. 🍻
I loved your rendition of Tobias. It's simply the magic of guitar and music that allows a player as accomplished as you to continue to grow. It wouldn't happen without your passion and enthusiasm which is food for those of us that follow your fantastic videos. Thanks for sharing all of your hard work! One last note, I've noticed Tobias getting an unusual and beautiful tone by playing softly close to the bridge, there's definitely a lot going on with his right hand!
This is the kind of lesson I used to get when I began learning to play in ‘95. I had 2 teachers that year (not including my father), and the second one was the guy who taught me stuff like this, which was one thing I sought to learn. My earlier teacher definitely was good, but he wanted to teach me only what he thought was worth learning, not what I was interested in learning.
Hi Paul! Great playing! And the sound you produce with your Oswald strat and your amp is mindblowing !! In Aliens are coming with their Ships and like to be introduce to Guitar playing Thea should Listen to you ! Realy Looking forwoard to your new oswald!!!! Best regards ! Daniel from The Tirol / Austria 👋
Feck me, you just bumped that lot up another level, didn't think it was something I'd be into but it's so fascinating and tuneful to watch . You look as if your hardly touching the strings with that wee skinny pick of yours love the double stop stuff good stuff 👌👌
Just _gorgeous_ rendition, Paul! I guess there's value in trying to nail the note-for-note ... but drawing on the creative depths of Tobias's stunning playing is enriching your own voice! I'm most grateful for the pointer: I let the Oldenburg playlist now just run! Amazing stuff. Thanks for doing the hard work on this one!! P.s. Meant to say: the Oswald is sounding especially lovely in your hands here. :)
Paul noodling Tobias noodling red jag.👌 You are so right about being a jazz artist doing other generes versus a blues artist doing jazz. The intricacies and details of jazz are so sophisticated in technique and expectations compared to most other generes that many people just leave it alone. I think of jazz and classical much the same because the amount of musical knowledge expected is so much higher in most regards. Technique, expression, variation, and all of the structural rules of jazz require years of study where rock, blues, and country all share similarities in chords, style, and tone, just change the groupings and rythm, you have a different genere. Cheers🤙🍻
Hi Paul, love all this disection that you are doing. Beautiful music being made in front of our eyes. There’s a lot to digest here as always. Thank you.
THIS is the reason I subscribed all those many months ago!! This did my heart good, Paul. Your playing and feel is perfect!! Thanks for the share my good man!! 💕
Paul, you are a Master of the Stratocaster( and any other guitar you play ) I love your playing and try to learn from you everyday. Thanks for the boatload of inspiration!!
Incredible playing as always, inspiring to see your constantly looking for growth and new inspiration too. Never at the top of the mountain, always still climbing it like the rest of us :) Also..... That Oswald sets my GAS on fire lol
We're all very familiar with that 0.5 Paul especially when we watch your videos !....it sure beats having to lift the stylus and go back 10 grooves like the good old days of learning a Bert Jansch number😂
Excellent my friend. Great job. I watched a bunch of your videos and stole some tasty licks , I just have to keep playin em so that I get the same feelin that you do when you play them.
Thanks RPM Blues. Yeah, I absolutely agree that playing something over and over helps you get into the groove of the player you’re basing it on. I’ve been doing that with Tobias 😊
Paul Cook -- -1. “ Finally, some one who can PLAY the guitar “. 👍😊👍😊👍😊 Truely 1. If you want to put tremolo in there it’s fine with me. Actually my ears were waiting for it. 2. Suggestion: I would love to hear your interpretation of “ Riviera Paradise “- SRV . Not a dime a dozen copy, but an interpretation. 3. Another suggestion : Same with “ Moonlight in Vermont “. by Johnny Smith?? 4. And your interpretation of Nat King Coles - Stardust (The feel and the tempo.). Excellent touch, feel, spirit and tone. mmmm....I’m sorry Jason Becker.....you went 90 mph, but you forgot romance and love in your music. The best thing I’ve seen on RU-vid today
@@paulstaffordcook8799 You’re welcome. For the comment and song ideas. We’re not getting any younger, Paul. You and I are about the same age; I’d like to see you in a band setting. That’s what we do. Play songs. Play solos. Not just sit in a practice room and make you tube videos. I’d love to hear you play your version of Rivera Paradise. Or Round Midnight, etc. With your tone and touch, you could pull it off. There’s a lot of guys playing along with a song, or giving instructional videos, or playing solos to full backing tracks that they’ve made. Those guys are a dime a dozen. To me. The established guitarists are in a band on RU-vid. And I don’t see a lot of that. Keep up the good work, now in a live band situation. Preaching to you and I’m preaching to myself. Great touch man. Like Kenny Burrell and Larry Carlton
Paul, fine video as always, love that tremelo/sustain, and now the nonsense. 1. Couple driving home after a night out gets pulled over by the cops, husband says " What have you stopped me for you arsehole ?", wife says " oh officer just ignore him, he's a cheeky bastard when he's been drinking ". 2. Fella goes to a brothel, the madam says " what's your preference Sir ?", fella says " I love big curvy women", madam says " oh sure, we have a few girls like that, make yourself comfortable and I will send them in for your delectation ", first girl comes and she's around 16 stone, he tells the madam no , bigger, second girl comes in, she's around 21 stone, no, bigger, third girl comes in, she's 30 stone, lad says "that's the one ", so there getting down to it with him on top and he's making painful noises, she says " what's wrong Dearie, am I hurting you ?", lad says " no, I'm burning my arse on the light bulb ". 3. Fella driving in thick fog hits the car in front, a dwarf gets out and looks at the damage and says "oi you, I'm not happy ", fella says "ok, which one are you ?". Take care kid.
That guitar is so distracting, wow, never seen one but certainly want one! The rhythm you laid down is gravitational, the solo was telling , not that people can just play it like you did, but you can hear it coming and there it is at your finger tips. Excellent video!
Nice playing Paul!...Had almost a Hawaiian feel to it when you kicked on the looper...when I find myself wanting to do my thing it's usually because I CAN'T play what he's playing!
Hi Greg. I’ve just got round to streaming that track by Duke Levine. Man, he’s great! I hadn’t heard of him until now, so thank you for introducing me. What a lovely feeling that track has. So I’m going to be listening to some more of his stuff. Cheers Greg 👍
@@paulstaffordcook8799 that’s great Paul. I would recommend his album Beneath the Blue (on Spotify) as a starting point. The tracks Trio and Dark and Stormy Night are in your wheelhouse. Lots of his playing on RU-vid too - he has a monster solo over Hold your Head up by argent that always blows me away, and a breathtaking performance of only love can break your heart. Thanks for taking the time to read and reply - you rock!
P.S. I wrote a very long review earlier Paul but I was on strong pain medication following hip replacement on Thursday. I have no idea where I sent it.🤷♂️
A don't know bud, I can't get jazz, I'd rather listen to classical (Alan Mearns}) adding ornaments to Bach. I do admire people that work hard at there music so +1 to you. 👍🥃Respect to you mate.
Crikey, Paul! As you know, I've always been impressed by your playing and attitude to the guitar and gear for that matter. But this? I nearly spat out my tea, man. I have soooo much work to do. You just jumped up about 4 boss levels (gaming parlance, I gather. I don't really know). Where's that half speed button .... ahhh there is is. And 1, 2, 3....
Thanks Ella & Stuart. Yes, it was built by Nick Oswald of Oswald Guitars in Holland. He builds mainly Tele and Strat style guitars, including the use of nitrocellulose lacquer and is quite a talent! He’s currently building me a Jazzmaster, and I’m super excited.
Really enjoyed this video again…. Thanks Paul. And nice to see you play the Dutch Oswald guitar. Proud of the fact that with have that high quality guitar builders in our small country 😊
My God man, don't be so hard on yourself. Your so called Un raveling ,I wish my unraveling was so unraveled ;O) I know , the pot calling the kettle black.
