So enjoyed this, thank you so much for your tips🙏 Doing a 3 week hike in NZ in a few weeks, have found from previous hikes some fresh fruit or veg really helps keep up my energy even though it’s not the most practical or efficient energy source. Dark chocolate and a plant based protein powder with added vitamins has been really helpful at times too. Definitely relate to chugging healthy food when you hit a town, can’t get those nutrients down quick enough😁 Stay well, cheers from NZ 🙏

Thank you for your videos! As a 2023 thru hike prospect I'm soaking up as much info as I can and you are consistently good. How often were you resupplying? I also dont really have 20lbs to lose so Im trying to figure out how much I should realistically carry.
@PackAndSoul
@PackAndSoul Год назад
Thanks for this comment! Pumped for your thru! Probably averaged out to a resupply about every 3 or 4 days or so. By the end of the trail, I could barely fit the food in my bag I was eating so much lol. But there seems to be food all over trail. Weather trail angels, day hikers, random gas stations on a road, etc. wasn't ever really in a situation where I ran out of food... except when a bear took my food bag! (I hung it wrong). What date are you heading out?

@@PackAndSoul My roommate and I are planning on leaving the first or second week of April, depending on how quickly can pack our place lol. At this point I'm just making the gear purchases I need and mentally prepping. Its feeling more and more real the closer we get. Were both still working/ grad school but I'm looking forward to that pivot in the last few weeks before we leave. Not looking forward to the cold up front but hopefully leaving later will help. Thank you for all your helpful videos man!

@paddle_hike
@paddle_hike Год назад
I'm not thru hiking so it's different but i still try to eat KETO as much as I can on trail.... Way harder but I boost myself with fat and protein instead of sugar... It works for now but would be too heavy and expensive on a thru hike and hard to find too. Thanks for the info.
@PackAndSoul
@PackAndSoul Год назад
Oh yeah, keto has to be way more sustainable health wise long term. Probably more expensive too like you said, but if you can swing the cost, you’re most likely better off. Do you feel you get enough calories with Keto? These little honey bun things filled with pure sugar have like 900 calories. All empty, all processed. But there they are. Started off the trail eating so healthy, and was just way too hungry all the time!
@paddle_hike
@paddle_hike Год назад
@@PackAndSoul well, fat gives a lot of calories very fast...PB, mct oil, olive oil, nuts etc so adding these to your mix helps a lot. I do get enough when i'm adding...if I don't, nope! but It could work if you know what you are doing and able to find the ingredients. I go high fat and protein.. :)

@@PackAndSoul another tip for favor is infusing your olive oil before you take it on the trail, just toss in some garlic, Basel, rosemary ect when the oil is at a simmer and let it go for 5 min or so then cool and strain, it makes food just that much better for 10 min or ur time

The amount of sodium in Backpackers Pantry’s food is unreal! I’d skip it entirely, it doesn’t matter if it’s family owned, they make the most ultra processed, industrial stuff ever! 😂
@PackAndSoul
@PackAndSoul 2 месяца назад
I hear ya. But in terms of what’s typically in thru-hiking food, sodium’s the least of my worries. Super hard to find a truly healthy meal that won’t break the bank over 5 months and will actually have the calorie count you need. If you’re aware of one, let me know
