Great video. I hit the AT in 2024, and I also have the Nemo Hornet 2P. It’s great to see someone who provides practical advice, rather than pushing a Z-Pack tent system as a must, or $400 rain gear. Much thanks, at the tender age of 62 I’ll need all the luck I can get😂😁

I will say, after a thru hike attempt of the AT last year, that your gear represents what you most see on trail. We need more of these. On RU-vid I see a lot of frameless packs. On the trail I saw a lot of Osprey packs and Amazon tents! And I love that. And what I loved is that it's a reminder that it can be done with a range of gear. You don't need the best and lightest to go out there. And as you know, you learn as you go! Thanks for sharing. I'll be returning this summer for a SOBO thru attempt and I can't wait

I just bought the Osprey Atmos 65 a few weeks ago and have started to worry that I should have gotten a lighter pack for thru hiking. This video is definitely reassuring, glad to know you've been happy with yours!

Oh yeah, in my experience the atmos was incredible. And held up way better than a lot of the lighter packs out there that straight up broke halfway through. Of course, it’s all personal preference. But still using it and working perfectly.

I switched to an UL pack and lowered my BW by a lot recently, but I really enjoyed mine when using it and if I ever have heavier loads I imagine it's one of the first packs I'd look at, as well as possibly the HMG packs

Good discussion of what is available today for the trail hiker. In '72 a good friend and I did the AT with Frostline packs that we had sewn ourselves, external aluminum frames. We did splurge on good 15 degree bags from REI but otherwise most of our gear was from our Boy Scout days or the Amy surplus store. I had Vasque boots and IIRC Denny wore Bass(?). Clothing was mostly wool with cotton cargo shorts. No tents, hammocks and nylon tarps for cover as needed. The next summer we did what is now the Great Divide Trail in Alberta and British Columbia with the same gear. In 75 we did the AT again but southbound. Again same gear but I got a little extravagant carrying a very small cast iron skillet for our special 'after town' meals of eggs and fresh meat. It was luxurious!

Hey Hollywood! Thanks for the video and the amazing quotes from mighty bones and no rush. I keep a list of quotes I love and those are definitely going on the list. Solid gear load out. I always enjoy it when I meet a hiker that loves their gear. Does it mirror my gear list? Not even close! But at its core it is identical! Just as your gear made you happy and safe my gear does the same for me. As you so perfectly said: gear is personal. To me, it’s as personal of a thing as what you name your first born or who you decide to choose or not choose as your life partner. I say If gear makes someone happy and keeps them safe, You should keep your pie hole shut and be happy knowing that the hiker is out there living their best life! Don’t be a Mary Ellen! I used the sawyer smart bottle system last year, mixed with a camel pack for my motorcycle jacket. It wasn’t enough for me and my dog. Now I’m using a kaydin befree filer that fits perfectly with a hydropak 4L collapsible jug, a 3L msr bladder attached to my pannier, and same camelpak for my jacket still. Plan on doing a lot of travel this year!

@@PackAndSoul oh wow. Thanks for the kind words. I’m actually a photographer and my photography business is what is funding my trip. I’m wanting to take a break from my paid work and create the videos and photos that feed my creative side. I know the trail will provide that for me and I think the videos will help keep my mind occupied and fight any boredom. I get bored quickly. With that being said, I’m only bringing the least amount of gear as possible to do this which will challenge me to try to “create”. iPhone 13 pro and GoPro with an external mic is all that’s coming. Sony gear is staying at home. Lol. I want to def check out your documentary. Where would I find it? Thanks 🙏

Love darn toughs. It’s the only socks I use. I have a pair that has been through countless military operations. It’s finally starting to wear down, but still doesn’t have a hole. Another thing is there anti microbial properties are insane. I did a 6 day field event and wore the same socks in 90-100 degree weather the entire time. No problems with athletes foot or trench foot.

I love my Nemo synthetic bag, and can’t wait to try my quasar pad!! Unfortunately I couldn’t track down a Nemo hornet for a reasonable price so the tent I’m using this year is black tail hotel bikepacking tent! I can not wait to get out there this spring!

Forgot to mention that I actually wore a pair of La Sportiva WIldcats for a few hundred miles. Picked them up at from the hiker box at Stanimals-Wanesboro and wore them until I got to NJ. They worked great, but I also love the La Sportiva Spire GTX's that I wore for my first 900 miles and the second pair I wore for the last 900 miles.

Thanks so much for watching! I found cold soaking to be a great way to "cook." I'd usually put some freeze dried food (backpackers pantry, mountain house, ramen, etc) in a talenti jar around lunch time, noon or so. Fill it to the brim with water. Then by 7pm for dinner, it was perfect. For the cheap ramen meals, an hour or two usually did the trick.

@@PackAndSoul I had a mini Sawyer with Sawyer one gallon clean and dirty bags that were more duct tape than bag in the end...lol! I just got a Katydyn screw on filter directly on a collapsable Hydrapak 3 liter bag. Its so much lighter and more compact than my old set up. I also love my hydration pack...so convenient.

I hear ya, but I really found it carried the weight so well! My experience with ultralight packs have mostly been that they’re uncomfortable because the weight just doesn’t sit right. But of course everyone is a bit different. What else did you have in mind?

If you want to get it but lighter the Atmos AG LT 50 weighs less and has same suspension and everything. You could also look at the exos pro 55 but I haven't seen/tried it on in person

Appreciate you watching! My pack all in with full food resupply / water was around 35lbs. Definitely on the heavier side, but it’s also because I brought my camera gear with me, which added an extra 6lbs or so. I didn’t mind the weight.

Totally on board with the one ziplock bag. Go back to the inconvenience of using the flask(if you must). Either you lug around little glass empties or put more pieces of plastics out there...... yeah?

Thanks for checking it out! That’s just a random velcro strap on there, think I got it from one of the Nemo products. Was handy though, used it to hang from trees while gravity was working. It’s a great system!

Thanks for watching! Man, I’d absolutely love to do a thru with my dog one day. I have heard it’s really challenging though. Injuries, sickness, fatigue, even saw one dog who got bit in the face by a rattlesnake. And some people at shelters get pretty worked up if a dog barks at night. It’s daunting for sure, but I imagine the reward of doing something like this with your best bud has to be worth the hassle. I suppose just do a bunch of test hikes with your buddy. A few days, a week, see how it goes. Let me know too, I’d love to hear what you learn!

Both are used by Hikers but a Compactor bag are smaller bags made to handle the stress a Trash Compactor puts them through, a Contractor bags are large for large Cans commonly used by Contractors for waste that would shred normal large trash can liners.

I’m pumped for you!!! I didn’t get extra health insurance, like travelers insurance, but i know there are people who do that. It more readily covers an emergency medevac and things like that. I just stuck to my regular health insurance. I did go to the hospital once for shin splints, and my insurance covered it. Travelers insurance can get pretty pricey too for long periods of time. Let me know what you decide!

@@PackAndSoul unfortunately regular insurance doesn’t work for me - I will age out of the family plan on trail. To stay on after 26 it’s like 1k/month or something insane like that. I’m looking into various domestic travel insurance plans now!

I have the same pack... I bought it recently and I actually said the zippers on those hipbelt pockets really need to be attached to one of those car door testing machines for about 6 months to losen them up. My PCT adventures are set for next year, so this is my "buy every piece of gear made by every company" year, lol, I want to recommend that everyone who buys this pack needs to join a yoga commune or contortionist cult, a year in advance so you can use those hipbelt pockets starting out on day one. 😆

@@micbernier6403 Keep those questions coming! Anything I can do to help :-) So every 4 days or so I went into town and resupplied food at a grocery store. While I was shopping I’d leave my bag by an outlet and charge my phone and external charger. I’d spend an hour or two charging, shopping, eating, relaxing, then typically hitch back to trail. Charging electronics is funny, every time you see an outlet, you charge. You get good at spotting them / knowing exactly where they are lol. Sometimes there’s a gas station not far from trail and you can get some resupply stuff done there, but it’s usually not as easy to get good food and more expensive. I didn’t stay overnight at too many hostels or take too many zeros, about 10 or so, I loved being on trail ;-)

The one thing that really really does need to be reworked on the back is the belt pouches - they are too hard to reach to open and close. I have had one of their packs for a few years and that is the thing that keeps being an issue.

What was your total full pack weight? What is the range people carry? I am 180 lbs and ideally want to carry under 30 pounds that includes 5-7 days of food.

My pack with full resupply and water was about 35 (and that included 6 lbs of camera gear). Totally doable to get under 30 with a full resupply, you may have to spend a little more money to get the ultralight gear, and cut luxuries (like camera gear lol). Everyone is obviously different, but I’d say the typically range was between 20-30. But hey, thirty years ago hikers’ packs would be 40+ lbs! Lol. Such a give and take between cutting weight and bringing comforts. What’s your pack looking like right now?
