Mate, I am binge-watching Canal Boat Diaries this holiday weekend. E1 was beautifully lensed! Just started E2. I miss "Pub of the Week" in the episodes, but understand why you couldn't do that delightful part of your journeys on the Beeb. (Watching in the States, via VPN, btw. Keep it on the down-low, eh?) UPDATE: In E4, a bit of a "Pub of a Week," at 17:00, so there is that. Thwaites would be happy for the product endorsement on Auntie.

8:30 - the video effect and Ralph's accent saying " 'ello!!" made me laugh so much. I'm not ashamed to admit that I went back and watched it over quite a few times. 😂 Quality editing. Thank you for being so open about how this lifestyle can be funded. I often wonder how RU-vidrs make it. It is so heartening to see someone like you following your passion and making it work. Shame you didn't get to visit the Black Lion pub at Consall Forge. Definitely worth a Pub of the Week award. One of the friendliest pubs I've visited to date...lots of lovely locals. Hopefully you'll get back there sometime. Also, you missed one of the most exciting features of that area - steam trains! Hopefully you'll get to visit/record that at some point in the future.
Bit late to this episode, but what on earth was that whirlpool about in the opening sequence? Is it just some sort of drainage? Makes me strangely uncomfortable, wouldn't want to come across it on the canoe 😂

What originally got me interested in Narrowboating was looking on RU-vid for Alton Towers near the town of Alton, Stroke-on-Trent and stumbling upon pesky Narrowboating videos. The land around Alton Towers is really beautiful. Looking on Google Earth and, getting down to Street View level along some of the roads and it's amazing how gorgeous this area is. On the Inland Waterways Association website it looks like restoration of Uttoxeter Canal is underway. This canal runs right alongside the town of Alton and Alton Towers.
Great update video, Robbie. Shame you didn't manage to go in Th Black Lion. I love the Caldon! It's magical. I tried to get up The Macc to the Peak Forest but Bollington has spring a leak and it's now closed until March!!!! :(

If you ever return to Stoke, do try and visit the history noted Leopard Inn in Burslem. It is considered to be the place where Josiah Wedgwood and James Brindley met to talk about their plans to build the Trent and Mersey canal in 1765! There would be lots to cover as part of the Vlog, but given its relevance to the history of the canal network and why canals were built, it would be a great subject to cover. There is also the Bridgewater canal in Salford which also has its claim as a part of the history of wh we have canals.

I didn't remember that you had done a dive bar of the week. I. Used to love wedging my way into a dark corner with my sketchbook and pencil in such places.. not much a drinker, a whisky sour or a house white wine kept me busy and I usually felt that I should leave when finished..but if I got a sketch going nice Barbados would find me a fruit juice...I hope you had fun..I know I would have.

Hiya Nigel cheers yeah it’s tricky but you can order from Amazon to those lockers/pickup points (usually in a convenience shop), have leytters addressed to a local post office (by marking it ‘Post Restante’) or even order from ebay and collect from Argos. But it all requires careful planning/long stays!
Although you didn't mention them I think I espied The Rigger and The Holy Inadequate 😎🍻 Btw, The Stage Door has barely changed in all the many years I've been going in (they shifted the bar into the corner about 20 years ago lol)

Great to see thing's my youth haven't changed too much Rob. I noticed 'LIVING THE DREAM' has been a now universal term for problems. 1st Land Rover's , them lorry drivers, next VW vans (never a dream too unreliable) & now Narrow-boaters using this term! Having just moved onto the later & drive a HGV, had a few VW's in the past driven a plenty of Land Rovers (with the Army/civil), having said that I am glad I moved onto a narrowboat, because the community is friendlier, than the village I lived in for 24 years. Also my mental heath has improved!

I hadn't twigged that I could get all the episodes on iplayer. So I've now watched 'em all. Fantastic cinematography. The style is far gentler (if that's the word) than your RU-vid style. Defo. had a feel of the BBC about it; lovely. I have to ask wrt the scene where you're going through Froghall Tunnel; that wasn't the balanced flue of your gas water heater you were crowbaring off was it? Y' might want someone to check it out if it was.
This was a really enjoyable video, and well done. Obviously you have the advantage of having done 'professions' work. I get a kick out of your boat's engine sound - one of the older types with a put-n-clank noise as it races along (at 3 mph)... 😊

I'm a newbie to your channel, so I'm intrigued as to why you don't monetise your content through Adsense, as I suspect most folks just expect ads on videos. A shame that you're missing out on another revenue stream, but you no doubt have a solid reason. Anyway, I'm very much enjoying your videos.
I hate watching adverts myself so I thought it would be hypocritical to have them on my channel?! I know I might be missing out financially… but I’m happy knowing the videos are being shown how I want them to be. Google take 45% as well so I’m not looking to earn money for them 😂 Sadly sometimes there are copyright claims on some of the music in pubs etc which is annoying because then adverts are automatically placed. Anyway thanks for asking hope that helps!?!

Lovely sofa it looks really comfortable. Technology has transformed the way we work and the costs linked with office working is pushing and in a London forcing, many employers to consider remote working. Most roles in technology could be done on the canal as long as you had a good connection so business critical monitoring of live systems would be dodgy but development work would be fine. In fact most admin / back office roles could now be done remotely, it’s just one small step further than centralised functions like call centres and HR, there really is no need these days to be sitting in an office. Lots of people classed as non permanent, work on short contracts on day rates in these roles because the flexibility suits both them and the employer. Most creative jobs could be done on the canal and is probably easier for those who prefer to be independent. Maybe speak to an agency and do a video on this. 😁

You have also posted some lovely photos of the marina and I see you’ve had your first frost 😯 To be honest I’m struggling a bit to keep up with my NB RU-vid friends because there are so many fantastic channels now but I will make sure I leave a comment because it is nice to keep in touch.
Just watched this one and lovely to see you were round by near where I live, I'm in Stafford not that far from Stoke and Leek. Next year I aim to get up there more often. Like you, I don't have a car so my main form of transport is train and bus. Actually enjoy the adventure of trying to get somewhere by train and bus and well as being there! I get somewhere then go for a good walk and canal tow paths are a good place to walk.
Funny, CruisingTheCut's David just took his boat through the Caldon and also mentioned the Black Lion--but he didn't stop either. It looks like a great pub, from reading the reviews about it on Yelp and other pub sites. Deffo worth a return visit someday, I would think. Robbie, hope the series fills in some good content about Stoke and the Cauldon Canal as this post was weak. SO many boaters have fear of Stoke but if you look at the RU-vidrs that have gone through it, most / all have had positive experiences, don't moor in Hanley Park as chavs exist everywhere. So much history in Stoke , so many museums, boatyards and renewal and boaters just blast through ! Shame.

Thanks Chas yep although pubs did feature it was actually incredibly hard to do. Filming for the BBC involves asking permission and pubs involve alcohol. So as soon as I mention the beeb suddenly I’m the target for everyone’s grievances!!

Fair weather boater? I have seen all your videos and I know you have moved in fog, in the dark, and once both, you are the least likely to let adverse conditions stop you boater on RU-vid. That said, another boat tuber was just at that basin not long ago, it looks like all the channels I follow are in roughly the same part of the country right now.
