Hello - I've been binge watching your vlogs. Your calmness, cleanliness, happiness, peace, all come across as very comforting. My husband and I downsized 2 1/2 years ago from a 3200sf home to our Tiny Home, and we've never looked back. I'm perplexed at all of the negative comments. Your home is just that, your home. You've made it a place you feel at home in. Ours is also custom made, and it's worked well for us. Stay happy and healthy! :o)

Where I live a carport is good, I will have a regular size washer and hang clothes outside, I do not use a dishwasher, I am waiting until I do not have any pets. Thank you for bringing all of these points to light. I have already downsized greatly including my precious photos and other items . So I will be ready in 3 to 4 years. I enjoy the planning so much. I am watching your videos from the beginning. I enjoy the videos alot. Your refrigerator is perfect!!!¡

@@myBIGtinyhouselife I am curious for next update. I thought I could continue on in my 4 br 3 bath and 2 car garage full, on 1 acre, after my husband passed away 4/1/21. We cleared this property together ❤. But a year later it's proving to be a bit much. I am "decluttering at the speed of life". Covid did this and I want to get back some order to my life. I am retired. Searching new options. TFS.

Consider a dish drawer instead of a full dishwasher. I have a double drawer one in my current home, but only use the top drawer. I would just get one drawer when going smaller. Fisher Paykel brand - love it.

So nice to listen to someone in a tiny house living where there is winter! I live in a narrow valley with the Rockies on one side and the Cariboo Mtns on the other. Lived in 427 sg ft small house for almost thirty years with my son, from ages 5 to about 17 when he left home. Small garden shed, never had a dishwasher to really miss, never had a clothes dryer - used the clothes line most of the year - yes winter freeze dried the clothes, but oh man, when they thawed did they ever smell good! There was room in the little house bathroom for the cat's litter box - I sure appreciated that. Now I live in a place with a garage and let me tell you - I am not interested in brushing snow off my vehicle ever again! :D :D No dishwasher, and don't use the dryer - still have the clothes line outside and clothes horse inside. It is all about choices isn't it.

That’s great that you could only think of 4 things you don’t like! I live in Houston so, for me, no garage is a deal-breaker. I don’t have to shovel snow but we have lots of rain, high humidity, sweltering days so i was so glad to find a condo with a garage;not all condos here have garages. Plus garage storage is awesome to have. I could live without a dishwasher (though i do use mine) i do think if i had a tiny home I’d have to have a regular washer and dryer instead of the all-in-one. So you’ve given me plenty to think about if i want to go tiny. Thanks for your candor! 😊

I have to commend your honesty on this because I’ve watched a ton of tiny house videos and they NEVER complain about anything and that seems unrealistic to me. I think the four things you listed seem realistic to me. I think the hardest for me out of those would be the washing machine. I have heard that it’s not a quick process. I have seen a few homes with apt. sized stackables which could be an option if you had the space. Thanks so much for sharing.❤️

I already live in a small 800 sq ft bungalow, but deal with some of these same issues. No dishwasher, not a big deal but miss it at times. I have a small portable washer I attach to my kitchen sink....no dryer. I put a second rod in my tub and with hangers, I can hang several loads there, but hard for sheets & towels. I have a clothes line in warmer weather. I have small garage for garden supplies, but too small for my car...I miss that the most too as near Toronto and still deal with winter....not as bad as Alberta though! No pets, so that's easy. I put an apt in my bsmnt which has worked out great.....pays my mtg, taxes and some of my utilities. I've been very fortunate with great tenants. I have a gorgeous yard, but just not sure how long I want that responsibility so looking ahead to future options. Love your channel.

Bom dia. Great video, thank you! Ah, yes, a garage would be nice. I had them, when I lived in other countries, not here in England. But it's not THAT cold here. For the dryer, I'm contemplating one of these horizontal lattices to hang the laundry on, which you can pull up under the roof (like in old farmhouse kitchens). Dishwasher? - Definitivamente não: for my meals it's max 2 pots/pans, 1 plate, a cup/glass, a fork/knife/spoon... all washed, dried and put away within 5 minutes. I would like a cat in my tiny house or van. The best solutions I've seen in videos are enclosed cat litter spaces built into the bottom of a cupboard, so any spilled litter stays in there. Sometimes these are vented to the outside with a slow-turning old computer-fan (similar to the composting toilets), so there's never a smell inside the house or van. See you in the next video :)

Great talk- I would totally agree with them all. For me - a garage and or shop would certainly be missed. The tiny house movement seems to really evolve around being mobile- so some conveniences are certainly lost.

Thank you for sharing your perspective! Gotta say I can't relate on any front. Before going tiny I never had a garage or a dishwasher, so I guess I never knew what I was missing out on! I hated sharing laundry facilities at my old apartment building. I hated having to wait for the machines to be vacant, getting my clothes covered in someone else's dog hair, or ruined with remnants of the last person's bleach. I can't tell you how many clothes I've ruined over the years because of someone else's bleach! Mind you I still don't have a water drain installed at my tiny house, so I haven't been able to try my combo washer/dryer yet. I have to empty a bucket every morning, which is not fun. I've asked this park where my tiny is located 3 times over the past month to put in the drain pipe, but still, nothing.... that's my biggest gripe about living tiny so far 😆

All four of those things are things I don't have in my small apartment. (I don't have pets, but others here do, and it's not easy to find a spot for litter boxes) my so just bought me a mini washer and spin dryer combo for my Christmas and birthday. It's helping me save a little money, but I still have to take heavier items to the laundromat. One nice thing about these apartments is the garbage shoot and mail boxes are inside the building.

i recently came across your channel & i’m totally binging on your videos. i plan to start on my tiny house in 2021 & i gotta say, your videos are damn inspirational. i’m from cali & often lived in places that had a garage/carport but since living in missouri, a place where i actually *need* covered parking due to winter, i haven’t had either. 🥺😭 i’m hoping i can make at least a carport happen once i get my house situated. as far as the other 3 issues go, these aren’t problem areas for me. i barely own any clothes to wash (pretty hardcore minimalist here 😆) & when i do have regular loads, they usually only consist of socks & a couple pairs of pants. i use dishwashers as drying racks because i prefer to hand wash & currently, i don’t have any pets. also, i covet your shirt. 😍 i will have to grab one for myself, after i get rid of another shirt that doesn’t serve me anymore. (yanno, to keep in line with the 1 in, 1 out rule, haha!)

Oh well this answers my question about the washer/dryer combo. I too wish I had a garage for our one vehicle because I live in the desert and it’s blazing hot in the summer, a dishwasher would be nice too, I don’t have a cat, but I do wish my dog would sleep somewhere other than our bed...lol
@Cindy-bee

Yes the garage is a big thing in Canada or anywhere it snows. I hate cleaning the car before I can drive with a passion so my solution to no garage was a car shelter. I got one made in Montreal two years ago and I absolutely love it. Not sure if you would have room or be allowed one but might be a thought. The dishwasher I had in my last house I almost never used and I had two kids at home. Now I am alone I don't mind washing the dishes. It's a mindset I think. Some people have turned a small cabinet into a hidden kitty litter space.

I always believe that life is a matter of "attitude". How you see things (not only for today, but in the days, months, and years to come, including the possible changes that may occur in your life). How you feel. (know what you "want" and "need". Are you happy with it? Do you focus on your wants? or your needs?). And how will you react to it. (Everything must be well planned and take in considerations. The physical aspects of a tiny house. The location. The size. The facilities. The size and weight of your tiny house if it is on wheels. The environment, or climate. The maintenance and services. Then the social aspects. Your neighbors. The legalities of having a tiny house. People you will possibly interact with. Will all of these be beneficial to you?) Then lastly, one must always remember that "Life is NOT always a bed of roses". Like in the song "I Never Promised You A Rose Garden", and, "nothing is permanent in this world except change.(Heraclitus)

Appreciate the honesty. Ps you do get sink covers. Perhaps have one made, like a chopping board. I have a covered l.box thing, not too big. Use wood pallet litter chips n a dust buster. Here in South Africa it's not easy to find a safe spot. Not many places allow one to say, buy a plot n put on it a tiny house. They cost more than a steel frame structure home. Why, I have no clue. I do love the concept. Planning instead a tiny cottage on my property instead. Ps bought some raw cashews n am gone to try out creamer recipe!

I have just been obsessively watching your videos for the last couple hours- thank you so much for all of the information that you share! My little family is looking into moving from our half duplex into a tiny house on land and we are just at the very beginning of that journey! We live just north of Edmonton and have recently found a builder called FRC that is close to us. I was wondering if you knew anything about their builds or had any useful information on them? I was also wondering if you'd have any thoughts or tips for young families that desire to live more simply and really want to move forward into tiny home living. Thank you so much for your time! I love the work that I've seen teacup tiny homes do and am really leaning in their direction though.
@myBIGtinyhouselife
@myBIGtinyhouselife 3 года назад
Hi! I’ve heard good things about FRC and their home’s are lovely but I don’t know anyone who’s built with them unfortunately. I also don’t think they are CSA or RVIA certified builders so if that’s important to you I would recommend you asking them directly. I don’t see any men in their website. Using a certified builder gives you more options to park as most municipalities require it. It assures them that it was built to a code and inspected along the way. I’m not saying that a uncertified builder isn’t building to code or inspecting. I can say that I would not be parked inside city limits in Calgary if I hadn’t chosen a builder that had gone to the trouble and cost to get CSA certified. Something to think about and ask your municipality where you plan to park.

For the litter box and the jumping out litter spraying everywhere.. Put litter box inside a cardboard box that's about twice the size of it.. Boy … that was a very nice day! We lived in Montana for ten years and only had about three months of summer … Spring wasn’t until June … the South it was March! Sometimes it would be a rainy Spring … so summer time was July & August and September could be nice! We lived in the Bitterroot … the Banana Belt of Montana! July & August could be so nice! It’s a dry climate so winter wasn’t as cold and summers were so so nice! (No air conditioner needed) But if fires 🔥 broke out it could really be smoky! We had to get window air conditioners for (window) in kitchen and bedroom just to survive! Every where has its good points and bad! Of course now 2022 & 2023 weird weather everywhere! 🌈🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️

I've enjoyed watching a few of your videos that have come into my feed. My first house was a small three bedroom with a carport and back patio slab, I'm sure it was well under 1,000 sq. ft. There was no place for a clothes washer and dryer inside the house, so I just had them installed on the back patio with a throw cover - and yes, I only did laundry in good weather. If there are no park rules against outside washer and dryer maybe that would be a solution for you with your small inside washer/dryer as a foul weather backup. I've never livid in a really "big" house, the largest was a 3Bed, 2Bath, 2Car ~ 1,500 sq. ft. I'm now in my retirement house, just me in an 864 sq. ft. 2B, 1B with a 2.5 car garage/shop. I use the second bedroom as an office/guest/storage room. Its perfect for me and I'm not moving. I mainly watch small/tiny home videos for design inspiration. I know that you have now lived in your THOW for 2+ years now, and I think you did it wisely by using a builder who could certify your house as a park model built to code with safety features. You may have answered this question somewhere else - but how do you feel about the economics of your tiny living? Do you feel that you actually saved any money vs. just renting a smaller apartment? Or do your longer term plans revolve around moving to a more remote location and living off the grid - with these first couple of years a partial dry run to become comfortable with living tiny? Edit: okay, I now see you are building a van so I guess the van life is in your future.

Try a temporary carport, there are dishwashers that fit in 18 inch spaces or in drawers?
@myBIGtinyhouselife

Hi. Those aren’t allowed in my park. Have to be permanent structures. Possibly because it’s up on a hill and we get some strong winds. I really don’t need or want a dishwasher TBH 🤷🏻‍♀️😊.
@sw6118

Have you considered turning your empty loft area into you laundry room? Is it tall enough? Since hot air rises clothes that have to be hung would dry quickly and be out of your way while drying. (Washers are heavy.) With that extra space down below you might be able to move things around and add in a dishwasher. So many design choices you made are wonderful, simply wonderful and amazing, but the one thing I would change would be to use a telescoping closet rod so that I could stand in the bedroom and pull the clothes toward me. (I’d probably figure out how to put the drawers and shoes on the others side on a slider too.)

The closet rid is intriguing. As for using the loft for laundry, I don’t think climbing a ladder ti do it would work for me but I agree that warm air up there would dry them faster. As for a dishwasher, I honestly don’t want one and it would mean giving up storage space. Besides, it’s just me so there aren’t that many dishes to wash 😊. Take care 🙏🏼.

Hi. First time I've seen a video of you. Most of the other Tiny House Folk I see have overcome all the negatives you quote, apart from the garage. Litter box in bottom of cupboard. Mini dishwashers are available and lots of Tiny House folk have them. Also many many have washer and dryer. A bit of ingenuity can overcome the garage problem in a number of ways. But of course the 'on wheels' idea doesn't lend itself to a garage. If you are sure you are going to be permanent in your current space, start "thinking outside the box" literally and I am sure you will come up with some creative ways to solve your challenges. Meditation might help. Good luck with it. Supportive vibes coming to you from an Australian friend - Diane the Dauntless 💃

At least when you move to Victoria, you won't need a block heater. And you'll only have to brush snow off your car about eight days per winter. So that should take one thing off your list.

I've never had a garage or lived where there was a garage, and our small home doesn't have a space for a dishwasher. (My husband is MY dishwasher.). We have a washing machine in our home, but we have to go out to a shed to dry them, as we have no place for a dryer in our home. We have a cat who does the same thing your's does, but I figure it just goes with the territory of having a pet and caring for them, which I'm sure you do too. So I guess it's just a matter of what you are used to and what you can do without. However, I WOULD like having a dryer in my home and not having to go out to a cold unheated shed building to dry my things year round.

No. Alberta is legally not very open to year round RV living. Therefore, I registered my trailer as a Park Model which you are allowed to live in permanently.

You must be an out going person. I would think land/parking of the tiny house and how hard it is to really get would be on the list. Having a place you love not work out last minute and trying to find a place to put the tiny home is one main reason my build fell through and I had to just settle for a smaller single family home. Which of course is currently too big for me.

I understand that a Tiny House depreciates in value over time (like a car) and there is no equity earned. Is this not a downside in owning a Tiny House having invested a sizable amount of money?

One thing I think I would not like is (if it wasn't for the pandemic) in normal times you couldn't have more than one or two people at once for a visit..just nowhere to sit? It would be ok in summer, sit outside but in undependable climate that might not be possible either. Love the Rockies and Alberta. Have been binge watching Heartland during the pandemic.
