Thank you for sharing your story about working at your parents restaurant when you were growing up. I can relate since my parents ran a restaurant too. I had to help out too and hated it as a teenager but now as an adult I can definitely appreciate their hard hard work & sacrifice. 😘

This is why I ✨love✨ watching your videos Weylie. Asian American stories aren’t popular in mainstream TV, and to have your channel to watch and relate to, it feels really good. It feels familiar and it always makes my heart so happy to know that I’m not alone. 🙏🏼💗

So glad to hear that we share the same experience with parents owning a Chinese restaurant. My childhood was the same with prepping ingredients, not having parents go to parent teacher interviews, smelling like the restaurant - I feel ya girly!! 😢 My brother, sister and I saw how hard our parents had to work when we were growing up and that's where we get our work ethic from. We're an interesting breed, us children-of-small-restaurant-owners!

Thanks for sharing your story. My parents have owned their restaurant 20+ so all the years of me growing up through adulthood. I started working when I was younger to helping out Friday’s by answering the phone for takeout. I used to be embarrassed bc my parents didn’t have glamorous jobs like being a doctor or lawyer. I still get PTSD sometimes from New Year’s Eve bc it’s so crazy busy and people go nuts. And I’d b sad because my parents never went to my track meets or could pick me up from practice. I always had to ask my friends for a ride home. But after all these years I’ve never appreciated them more, understanding that they worked so hard to give us a better life. It’s not talked about often so thanks for sharing

I also had a similar experience where my parents we immigrants to Canada and they ran a convenient store. I also helped them tend the store together or alone at a young age. I appreciated it while I got older too. It taught me to be more independent at an early age. :)

I’m not Chinese but my husband is and ever since dating him it opened my eyes to the hard work Asian parents put into their restaurant. Usually as a consumer we just see the end product and not everything that went into putting out a dish. My husband tells me stories of coming home from school and going straight to the restaurant too. Having the restaurant really helped shaped my hard working husband and it really helped humbled me. Thank you for sharing Weylie. You share this specific part of your life repeatedly, the “feeling embarrassed” but so many of us relate to it.

And I always wondered, why your food always looks so delic. It all makes sense now, that you helped your parents at their restaurant. Also My parents taught me when I was younger to appreciate their work, that we all should be thankful and grateful to live in a house, having enough food and drink and to buy also some specials

My parents own a Chinese restaurant still (20+ years) and when I was little I used to help out everyday. I had the same experience as you growing up (parents not being able to come to school events, bring me places, etc). I'm 26 now and still need to help out on Christmas and New Years! I wouldn't change it- it taught me so much and is the reason why I have the work ethic I have today. I appreciate everything so much more because I see them working hard! They're the reason why I lived a comfortable life and was able to go to college in NYC!

I can definitely relate to this, during the school years all I did at weekends was work at the restaurant and never got to hangout with friends. At that time obviously hated it but as I've grown up I'm starting to realising that our parents worked hard to give us a good quality of life and appreciate all the things they had sacrificed for us.

I can relate to your childhood, I’m a first generation immigrant. My parents moved to San Francisco in the 80’s to flee the civil war in El Salvador and we had to work hard. They used to sell seat covers and Avon products at the flea markets, we also opened a store in Oakland at one point and I used to wrap gifts during holidays and Valentine’s Day, those were our busiest times of the year. I spent all of my weekends working with my parents & it definitely taught me the value of working hard & never taking anything for granted. I still get compliments for my creative gift wrapping skills til this day lol.

Aww I love that you shared your experience of your younger self!!! 🥰 I can totally relate and have felt the same way when I was younger. My parents own a donut shop where I also started helping out as early as 6 yrs old, helping with bagging the donut holes for customers. I also felt embarrassed about my parents line of business because they were never home and would work long hours. It wasn’t until I was alot older that I started appreciate their sacrifices to make me have a better lifestyle when I’m older. I still help them out to this day and am very grateful that I learned at a young age how hard it is to earn money.

I didn’t grow up in a restaurant but my mum opened up a hair salon when I was 10. I remember having to help out on weekends when I was 10 by being the cashier, the cleaner and I started learning how to wash customer’s hair and applying colour. I remember having to set up a stool at the basin because I was short and still am. I would hand out pamphlets in the shopping centre to help advertise and walk around house to house dropping pamphlets in mail boxes.

The curry looks sooo good! I grew up working at my parent's takeaways. Helped prepare the ingredients, and then, later on, took orders out at the front. It was always uncomfortable having full-grown men looking over the counter and asking what I was doing while I did my homework 🥲 there were also countless racist acts that I witnessed or was a victim of.
