As a stage 3 rectal cancer survivor and former ostomate, I get questions all the time about what I eat to avoid spending half of my life on the toilet. It's hard to say there's one magic thing I do, so follow me for a week to see what I eat and what I take to attempt to keep my bowels from ruling my life.

I appreciate your videos so much. I just had my ileostomy reversal surgery last week Tuesday, August 15. I’m hoping that I don’t have too much going to the bathroom although I am kind of off to the races with going 4 to 5 times a day. I’m glad I listened and heard my husband install a bidet toilet seat, I purchased some adult diapers, and I have some Imodium. We are survivors, and therefore we will thrive! Keep making this wonderful concert. I appreciate you.

Very informative. I’m lucky if I have a one bowel movement day per month. I’ve found I can’t tolerate any food with active cultures in it (yogurt). I was told to take Metamucil before bed if I’m having loose stools and in the morning if I’m constipated. I’m never constipated. I average 4 to 5 BM’s per day. I hope to reduce that. It’s been a little over a year since my ileostomy was reversed. I still have stressful moments when I’m out and about. Thanks for your video!
@SurvivorJelena
@SurvivorJelena 2 года назад
I’m obviously tired reading this because I at first thought you meant that you only pass 1 BM a month 😅😱 I was frightened for you! Then I realized what you actually meant, and that’s basically where I was for a long time. Do you add just a minimal amount of water to the Metamucil? Then don’t drink much for the next hour to make sure you don’t dilute the powder. Keep experimenting and hopefully you’ll find a magic solution that helps you, at least temporarily. 🤞🏼💙

I had the same cancer and treatment like you had, Jelena, that was from mid 2018 till januari 2019, when my stoma was removed. I had problems with bowelmovements and tried much different ingredients to try to solve the problem. Still I was never sure when I was gonna have to go to the toilet and that really puts a strain on your life. But since 5 months now, I started with intermitted fasting, I only eat between 12 o'clock at noon and 8 o'clock evening. I start every day at 12 o'clock with a banana and after 1 hour I start to get a meal. It doesn't matter what I eat now, I have no problems anymore with my stools being loose, it is always perfect smooth, once a day and sometimes once in 2 days. I never take immodium or metamucil. I only take vitamine D, C and B12, calcium, magnesium and callogen. I hope somebody will try this intermitting fasting too and share their experience how that goes for them. On top of that I lost 5 kilos, alltough I only weigh 55 kilos now, with my lenght of 1.65 m. wich is a perfect BMI.

When did your bowel movement’s start to regulate? I’m 5 days post surgery and I’m SUFFERING. I watched your video on your recovery but I just need some sort of light at the end of the tunnel. I feel like at the point I’m at I pretty much practice intermittent fasting to prevent diarrhea and I’ve gotten down to like 10-12 movements a day but I’m always hungry so I miss food. But I feel like the reason I don’t eat isn’t because I am not hungry but because I’m scared to poop.
@SurvivorJelena
@SurvivorJelena Год назад
They started to regulate a little when I ate a low-residue diet, but I got much better control after I went to my 2 week follow up appointment and my surgeon gave me the ok to take meds to regulate my bowels. I know saying “hang in there” isn’t much comfort when your butt is on fire and you can’t stop pooping, but unfortunately that’s about all you can do for a bit.

Thank you for such awesome and open videos. I am 5 months post reversal and would love to take my kid to a theme park soon, but I am worried about the bathroom issues. I take immodium once a day or every few days, but still seem to have either purges (3-6 times a day) or somewhat thicker stools that still happen 3 times or more a day. Should I just wait more months before even trying or do you think adding Metamucil and taking more immodium would get me through the vacation?

It doesn’t hurt to experiment with a mix of metamucil and Imodium. Especially if it means getting you closer to feeling comfortable doing something fun.

Thanks for the good information! My biggest problem a year after my reversal is gas. I've found myself going to the toilet fairly often and it's normally just gas, although the feeling is gas+bm. I've pretty much cut out dairy, beans, and other gas producing foods, but I'm still having issues. I've tried gasx and other products, with not a lot of success. I'm planning on using metamucil on a daily basis. Do you have any suggestions about what may have worked for you regarding this?
@CollboyGamez
@CollboyGamez 4 месяца назад
so in an average week you have about 1-3 bowel movements daily, while 2 being the average it seems. thats amazing. when I had UC I would have to go maybe up to 20 times a day sometimes and this makes me hopeful for my reversal. I hope I get this result, I dont want to get my hopes too high though, I have heard about 6-8 times a day too. and how do you deal with accidents? do they occasionaly happen ?

Interesting about HRT. I'm male so I don't know much about needing to take HRT during menopause. The only exposure to HRT for menopausal women I came across was that a.) it was cited as a reason that my mother died of breast cancer in 2012 and b.) my wife doesn't take HRT while being in her late 50s and in menopause. -- I have to shrug my shoulders on that, but I thought that women don't do HRT anymore.
@SurvivorJelena

When you’re at a normal menopausal age you don’t need to take HRT because your hormones naturally decrease at that age. I won’t take them anymore once I hit that age.

You need to tell your parents.

What consistency is his stool? Liquid? You should try Imodium to help slow down his bowel movements and bulk up his stool. It may help to also note what foods are aggravating his symptoms. Before I had my Ileostomy I was going a LOT because I have severe Crohns Disease. This was complicated by foods making it fluidly too meaning I felt the need to go more often. But if I ate foods that were easily on my bowels during flares it made me go less.
@SurvivorJelena
@SurvivorJelena 2 года назад
I agree with Matthew, start by taking some Imodium to slow things down, then try to see if there are certain foods that make him go more than others. Taking something that bulks the stools like Metamucil or psyllium husk can help too.
@matthew90276
@matthew90276 2 года назад
@@SurvivorJelena I have issues with cooked chicken for example. For whatever reason I can't digest certain foods and I think with the way the bowels work if they can't properly absorb fluid because there's chunks of food in the way? the consistency would be fluidy. I also have issues with potato chips and several other types of food including sweetcorn. I cut those out prior to surgery and didn't have a huge amount of issues beyond the usual Crohns disease flares. Food choices do make a huge difference to quality of life. I would suggest he creates a journal to see what does and doesn't work. There's a good chance they could identify the problematic foods and focus on the ones which work.

LOL I have absolutely no Idea what the hell you are eating and the concoction you drink in the morning is NOT eating!!!! At 71, on a farm in very rural Missouri, I know MEAT AND POTATOS!!!!!!!! So my diet is all screwed up and I have no idea what to do, and I feel that the doctor has done little to help!!! I will somehow survive, maybe but my mental attitude is very low! I really hate this! I don't eat as nothing wants to stay in! Might as well sit on the toilet and eat and save what comes out for the next meal! Because nothing stays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very frustrated person!!!

The the doctor there said that he doesn't think I'm chemo resistant he just doesn't think that the drugs I got this year were very good choice he said the drugs I got last year the full Fox 5 suppress the cancer kept them from growing so he recommends I get 6 rounds of full Fox 5 and then a another drug called avastin* . I was told recently that my end Ileostomy reversal will be within the next few months. Because of my Parastomal hernia and having to reattach both ends of bowel again its more complicated. From how I understand it for loop ileostomys its a simple matter of stitching the openings and placing back inside. Where as end they have to locate the large bowel and create a new opening?(Wouldn't it be sealed prior to end ileostomy creation?) to attach the small bowel too. There's also more of a risk of anastomotic leak. I think I also lost some of my Caecum too so I don't have the valve thingy that regulates stuff going in and out of both bowels. Which is fine with me I don't care. I'm just happy I have hope after a little over 13 months lol.
@SurvivorJelena
@SurvivorJelena 2 года назад
That’s interesting. I’d definitely talk with the surgeon about how exactly they’ll do the procedure so you’ll know more about how it’ll be done, and what to watch out for afterward to make sure there aren’t any leaks.

@matthew90276 2 года назад
@@SurvivorJelena Hi Jelena. I think it all just comes down to luck right? From what I understand after bowel surgery the bowels become inactive for a short time and if there's an anastomotic leak id become unwell after a few days.
