Are you or a loved one a cancer survivor? Have you been diagnosed with cancer & are wondering what to expect? Just interested in learning more about what it's like to be a survivor? Welcome to Life as a Cancer Survivor!
My name is Jelena, & my world was turned upside-down in May 2016 when at age 34, I was diagnosed with Stage 3 Rectal Cancer. I was the mom of a 5-year-old daughter. I was a runner. I seemed healthy. But my body had other plans.
I created this channel to talk all things Colorectal Cancer, & sometimes just cancer in general. Follow me as I talk about my journey from diagnosis, through cancer treatments (chemotherapy, radiation, surgery, having an ileostomy, and more chemotherapy) then adjusting to life post-treatment. I currently have No Evidence of Disease (what we in the cancer world like to call NED).
*DISCLAIMER - I AM NOT a doctor, so please consult with your doctor before following any advice.* #cancersurvivor #colorectalcancer #coloncancer #bowelcancer
I had foul gas with H. Pylori infection and gallbladder issues. My point is, we don't know so everyone get it checked out if you're having anything out of the ordinary. It could be anything, but don't ignore it because it could be something very important. I'm a thyroid cancer survivor, btw. It took them 19 months to finally diagnose me. Was even given a psych label for "anxiety" because I had a legitimate health issue.
I have been diagnosed with diverticlitis. no referal for a colonoscopy offered, but other advice questions why not ? So ive been spending some time researching, and so happy I found your video. Thankyou so much.
Good video. I am stage 2 rectal cancer. No bag. No surgery. No chemo. I look forward to 100% quality of life and a quick death in hospice. 55 years on this earth is not bad.
I have tummy issues at times too but it’s partly due to my 3 medical conditions I have .. but I have been changing my diet so far it has been helping ..
Thank you that was great. I ran to the store. Got some Gatorade and some MiraLAX instead of taking the stuff that the doctor gave me. I hope it works. I’ll let you know.
I'm prepping now and the clear liquids aren't as bad as I thought. My instructions didn't include any diet changes more than the day before. I hope I am doing it right.
I am struggling. ..have lost weight the last year.. 6kg. Have had more frequent diarrea the last year.. then 12 qeeks ago bloatiness major gas. Abdominal pain and back pain.. weird symptoms indicating poor cirkulation in feet.. i have struggled with stess the last with divorce with kids involved.. my stool shows signs of indigestion and occasionally a fat stool. I had my blood checked on the 24/4 this spring.. nothing came up.. a ct skan showed nothing at the gallbladder or pancreas. A small lowattentiating area on the liver and a small cyst like strukture on the bottom of the left kidney.. i feel of.. weird muscle aches att times.. i am worried that the things on my liver and kidney are initial secondary tumors and the main tumor is hiding somewhere.. apparently 1/3 of pancreatic cancers are misssed on imaging. ..
Ive had mine for 2 months now...i had diverticulitis. Worst pain ever out of nowhere 1 day..im scared to get the reversal. July 9th is my appointment to talk about setting the date for surgery. No cancer but im scared of the things that can go wrong. Im 39 with a bunch of kids and my wife cant do it on her own if something should go wrong. I dont know what to do.
Can you please recommend a brand of adult diaper I should buy? I'm worried about accidents. My colonosopy is scheduled for august. I am in tears close to cancelling it is so overwhelming.
It doesn’t matter if the doctors don’t want to believe your symptoms are serious they will chalk it up to IBS-C. I have been dealing with this for YEARS.
Let us know how long it took you to get your bowl under control (working normally?) after the reversal and any hints like exercise... Your channel is by far the best on this terrible disease!
IF YOU HAVE BLOOD IN YOUR STOOL, GET A COLONOSCOPY!! You will most likely get a small amount of blood (as in when you wipe or pat you will see it). This happened to me and I was sent to a gastroenterologist and he treated me for hemorrhoids. My primary care physician stepped in and sent me for a colonoscopy and that’s when they saw the cancer. Go to YOUR doctor first, not a specialist, because they know you and your history. Specialist will sometimes try to rule out the worse case scenario which is dumb really. But that’s my opinion…
6 months of the same drug. Followed by 25 rounds of radiation. I am a dentist. Never missed ONE day of work. I really had no symptoms thank the good Lord. I was 47 at diagnosis. Currently cancer free! We need a t-shirt or something for beating this!
You're not younger than me, i was diagnosed with colorectal cancer at the age 21, year 2021 and had surgery and chemotherapy, but after almost 2 year's it get back.
I been watching a few videos about port insert. No one is talking about clogging and flushing. I have to have one. But I'm worried it will clog. Due to the chemo sessions being x3 weeks apart. Do you have to flush the port at home ?
@willowthepony Do not wait. Tell your parent if you are a minor. Schedule the colonoscopy asap to get answers and relief. Focus on answers instead of worrying as worries do not help you get answers or treatment. 🙏🏼
I just got shot last year when I was 19 and was in a coma for 44 days and I woke up with that thing and it freaked me out but I learned more about it and got used to it but I’m 20 now and June 13th is my appointment to see if my colon is healed for the reversal I’m so excited now I’m 20 and I’m ready
I am from New Zealand and started my prep at 5pm this evening and it started working at 7.15. I was prescribed Glycoprep Orange which did not taste too bad other than giving me a mild headache. The 5pm prep was for 2L made from 2 sachets of Glycoprep. I have to have another 1L of prep at 5am tomorrow morning. My colonoscopy is as a result of a bowel screening test that I failed rather than from having any cancer symptoms.
Finished my last litre of Glycoprep Orange this morning. I am glad I took your advice to wear diapers last night although no accident luckly. I will wear a pair to my appointment and on the way to the post colonoscopy care home.
Hi Jelena I am back home now. It was a painless procedure and I was happy when the doctor said my prep was pretty good. She did find 3 polyps which she has sent to the lab for analysis but does not think they are cancerous. Prior to surgery the doctor did warn me of risks and I said what symptoms would I get from those problems and she said they will be able to let me know straight after the procedure if they have any problems and they did not have any. I felt I may have left with constipation last evening but I was back to normal this morning with no indication the Glycoprep Orange was still affecting me. I was given a discharge form with images on it. As its very likely I will need another one sometime due to polyps being found I will write everything down that I had for the LF diet and and steps I took to consume the Glycoprep. Maybe by next time they will have come out with a Glyco prep in the form of tablets to take. The hospital gave me complimentary transport to and accomodation in a care home last night in case I was to suffer any complications manly due to the anaesthetic.
You are such a bright and warm soul. I love your energy and enthusiam. Very strong spirit, and mind! And you have quite the story! Thanks for the share. Sending loveeee! And lighttt!
I didn't have this kind of surgery but I had like 30 staples for my knee surgery and I agree having staples is miserable. I had to sleep on my back for months because I couldn't bend my knee.
Thank you, Carole and Jelena for this EXTREMELY informative segment. I'm in Canada where this kind of transplant for non-resectable colorectal cancer liver metastases has only just recently been approved. Thank you for being a trailblazer, Carole! I'm currently doing all the workups to see if I'm a candidate for a deceased donor transplant so it was really enlightening to hear more about the process and recovery and navigating returning to life where cancer isn't the first and last thought of each and every day.
