Fran Makin that’s actually not necessary to feed pellets and in fact some rabbits can’t have pellets due to health problems just as long as a rabbit has unlimited hay and water and a variety of veggies then they don’t need pellets

Thanks! Glad it was helpful! Reducing pellets, or eliminating them altogether would be great! You might have seen the page on my site about pellets? Leafy greens as the bulk - for outdoor buns mainly cabbages, but other great choices include vegetable greens, kitchen herbs, kale and various types of lettuce. In the warm season you can feed partly or entirely forage (if there is a constant supply of grasses, meadow plants etc). If you stop feeding pellets, reduce them over about 2 weeks until none are left, and in this time increase the veg (at least 10% body weight in order to get the minimum amount of nutrients), then a few weeks into the pellet free diet, you may start to slowly introduce cabbages and other cruciferous veggies - some buns are prone to bloat and other intestinal problems, so monitor their droppings and make sure their tummies are okay xx

Okay I think I might do that, slowly introduce them to their new pellet free diet! I will monitor their droppings closely and have cautions of poorly tummies thanks to your advice. This seems so much better for their benefit because feeding them just veggies is the closest to the Wild! It can understand it must be quite difficult to provide enough veggies where you are situated. Sounds like you're doing your best though! Are there no supermarkets where you can get her veggies?

I am in a small town called Midland Texas.. There are little pop up vendors that sell greens. But they just come randomly.. The grocery we have is not an organic grocerer. A lot of their produce has preservatives. So we try to go to the Natural foods store that's like 45 minutes Away. Everything is super expensive. And most farmers down here grow cotton. And not many grow produce because its a very dusty enviorment.. We are trying really hard! My bun is a little Lions head as well she's had a pretty rough beginning so we are just now starting to get her on a feeding routine and weening her off her old food. Which was actually hamster food..

Oh gosh! Hamster food? Yeah, I wish organic veg was more affordable and lasted longer. Here in the uk it is very expensive to buy organic, and it generally doesn't last as long, so ourselves and the pets just get the regular supermarket veg :)

It would be good if you fed them veg twice daily :) Yes you can dry them in the sun (make sure they're very dry though, no damp as that = mould. Or a very low heat in the oven :)

Pets Palace Plus Awesome thank you. I'm already planning my herb garden for the spring and looking at planting some yarrow too. I'd forage for it but I'm worried I'd get it confused with the poisonous plant that looks similar. We get loads of sticky weed in the garden though and bramble. I'll start doing their veg in two sittings though and see how it goes, thank you. Another weird question: what's the best time to get all the reduced veg in Tesco? Mine never has any lol 😂

I'm not Erin, but feed around 1/4 cup or less each day (I feed my two 1/8), and 1 week should do, as long as they have settled into their surroundings, but start simple, leave your hand in the cage and let them smell it, and get to know you, then progress to petting them, and picking them up!

Don't worry about it, they're just not educated on the subject. Unfortunately uk/us sites are quite misleading when it comes to nutrition, so they probably just say those things because they have done their research on those. Seeds provide essential fatty acids and other useful nutrients. Pellets usually contain fatty acids (good brands contain oily seeds and the not as good brands use lots of vegetable/soy oils) but you may add a small amount if she still needs to gain weight. +Pets Palace Plus thanks yer she could do with gain a bit of weight as she is lionhead but she only weighed 1LB when she went to the vets for her shots in September but she is now slowly gaining weigh plus she loves them to bit and will behave if she know she is getting her pellet and seed at night she just binkys and go's VERY crazy xx

Thank you! UK & US sites often say 'cabbage is unsafe' or 'cabbage = bloating' etc. This is because probably 95% of UK/US owners feed pellets or other commercial muesli etc, and pellets alongside cabbage is basically a recipe for bloating. Cabbage needs to be digested quickly in order to prevent gas, so if their digestion is being delayed by pellets, bloating is more likely to occur. Even on a pellet free diet, you want to wait a few weeks before feeding that much so their digestive systems adapt, and always introduce cabbages really slowly so they get used to it. Yep, kale is very healthy too (same feeding rules apply) :)

Even today's rabbit holders, which offer Silange, make positive experience with it. It is important, however, that silage can also have deficiencies (due to incorrect production and / or storage), in these cases it can lead to incompatibilities.' I know haylage is a drier version, but I assume that it is very similar. They may have them whole or chopped in half :)

Tuesday Jeane You should try hay bags! You can DIY them or buy them for pretty cheap on Etsy. :) They come in some super cute designs. They don't hold much, though, so you'll find yourself having to refill them at least 2-3 times a day, but they work really well.

Broccoli, kale, chinese cabbage - the well tolerated varieties can be safely given. Cold pressed grain free pellets will be better for digestion too :)

Twice daily they get veg, and the hay racks topped up as needed. Then a small serving of dried herbs. I feed as much veg to last until the next feeding, and they have hay 24/7 :)

Yes that's right, and also I live in a hard water area so there is a greater risk of stones/other bladder & kidney related issues if the water isn't filtered x
