What I found on the "special road" to remote Hamningberg, Norway

This is my drive along the coast of the Barents Sea to the tiny village of Hamningberg, Norway. The long dead-end road north from Vardø passes through some of Norway's most remote and spectacular scenery. Picture a narrow, winding path along the sea through spiky jumbles of arctic rocks.
The town itself contains nice houses, but no people... at least not permanently. (I did see a dog though!) This is one of those days where the getting there, and the "there", were equally mesmerizing. One of my favorite travel days ever.

It is in fact two cafes there, but you're a bit out of season. They are usually just open in the summertime.

Thanks for Great video! 👍 Hamningberg is the only place in Finnmark with wooden houses from before WW2. The Germans located there evacueted in a hurry and didnt burn the buildings down as they where supposed to.

There were a few buildings further west that survived the war too. Eight churches were spared because the German commanders in charge flatly refused to burn down a church and there was at least one small shed somewhere they overlooked. But that was all that was left across an area larger than Denmark.

Almost true. Vadsø was neither burned down. The Germans where in too rush getting away to bother burning it down, and besides most of the town was already in ruins from the Sovjets airbombing the town. But the buildings who survived the bombings, where left alone by the Germans. Mostly houses built from 1840 to 1940.

Its not towns dump!!! its from people who have been cleaning up the beaches and they come and collect that later... it happens all around in Norway and is encouraged by government to do these kinds of things. The town is abandoned, the houses you see are now holidayhouses owned by mostly people in Båtsfjord or Vardø I would think ... the town got abandoned in the 60's... Around at the time they got a road built to that place 😛

People do burn or bury waste on the beaches though. Not as common now compared to a few years ago though

Its a memory of a rescuemission done by Colin Archer boat in 1894, these wessels where the first rescue wessels of Norway, one of the new ones are named after this.

Back then, most fishingwessels where rowingboats, they could have several fishermen that rowed out to the fishingfield and then back with the catch. Later on motorized fishingwessels came.

Thanks a lot. Nice to know the videos have a style of their own! Yes I had quite a lot of fish, lots of delicious salmon. They'd serve it at breakfast, lunch and/or dinner, depending on where you go. I certainly never got tired of it

My family on my fathers side used to live there before they moved away, the memorial plate says "fell under the defense of Norway against fascism" they where partisans fighting against the German invaders...

Search for; "The partisan museum in Kiberg tells an unknown war story", then you will know why and how those three was shot and why there is a memorial about them. There is many stories, and you have to know the history to know about them.

When I was at Hamningberg many many years ago, I was at top of those rocky hills to see the iirc ww2 ruins, so I'm guessing if you didn't see anyone they could've been up there?

Weather station Cord vertical - Fine weather String flutters - Wind Cord vertical - Storm Cord dry - Dry weather String white - Snowy weather String stiff - Frost Cord invisible - Fog String gone - Hurricane That is the reason why there are orange sticks on the side of the road. When there is a lot of weather, you don't want to know where the road is, or ends.

3:14 If there are no speed limit sign, the max speed on Norwegian highways is always 80 km/h (50 mph) but yes, you have to be mad to drive that fast on such a road. There are lots of mad people in Finnmark.

There is also a rule in the traffic law that you must drive as the conditions allow. This includes being able to stop in time.
