There has been lots of discussion about leader length and drop shot rigs. Long? Short? What is best and when? I spent some time today investigating how these different leader lengths actually effect what the lures are doing underwater. There is one particular presentation I will be using a lot more! I was waiting for you to talk about casting vs. vertical, but what I always considered to be “leader length” was the amount of differing line used with the application and not the baits distance from the bottom. Good to have conversations about this kind of stuff, thanks Steve I always appreciate your content.

Im often using a dropshot rod while im fishing from my float tube. I just put it in my rod holder as we call it “the dead rod”. As im moving with my fins, the lure is making enough motion under water, especially if the dropshot is bumping over rocks. Im using one rod to (vertical) jig as the dead rod will bend if ive got a bite. I change the depth depending on acticity on both my rod and fishfinder. Mostly between 1 foot and 4 feet. When Im using crawfish on the dropshot, I keep it rather short. This is typical for european waters. However, recently ive been fishing the kickback rig more often as it is currently more effective.

Ofc it takes a bit of practise to fish it dead style, with a good tension-slack balance. Ive got quite an angle because a vertical presentation means not enough slack which results in misses. Finding the right distance is just so Important!

Thanks Steve. I knew I was gonna fish a drop shot for the first time tmoro. I picked up my phone to research it a bit and your video was right there on my RU-vid feed when I opened the app! Talk about good timing! Great content!Can you recommend what size weight to use for various depths? You showed what looked to be a big ol' sinker. I'm thinking 1/8 oz., fishing in a reservoir at 15 ft deep, no wind. Your thoughts?

Great question. If I am trying to cover water to find fish I will actually use a power shot, which is just a heavier weight, up to 1/2oz. If I am dialed in on a spot I may go down to 1/8, but I probably use a 1/4 the most. If you are in the 15ft range the size you plan on using is great. If the wind picks up you may need to go heavier. So, I'm the typical weekend bank fisherman fishing off lake St. Clair. Which leader length should I be using, especially since the smallies and largemouth are not in the shallows but they're in the mid-range depth (8-15 feet) that is like 20 feet away from the bank?

That is a terrific question. In that situation from the bank, I would usually use a leader that is about 3ft to start and adjust from there. They can be cumbersome to cast, but that should help to keep the lure off the bottom a bit at that distance.
