HIIIII!!!!!!!! I swear that you are my hair motivation as i started my relaxed hair journey in August...With all the natural/transitioning videos im glad that there are some relaxed sistas :)
I learned from beauty school that when you get a chemical burn that it is best to put aloe Vera gel on it and it soothes the pain and also heals it Pretty fast too. I actually did this on my sister's hair and it worked wonders on her scalp after that burn.
you have my dreamhair. i love kinky hair but i prefer the relaxed look ! If more people knew how to maintain healthy relaxed hair, more naturals would relax !
Love your channel. After 2 years of going natural and not being happy with my natural hair styles (and the work it takes to detangle/style), I am getting my hair relaxed by Gloria today!! I’m new to Ottawa in the past year and so grateful to you for pointing me in the direction of your stylist. Thanks!
1. I learned that I didn't need to big chop & that a gradual cut would've worked better for me 2. being natural is MORE WORK , esp if you're like me and you prefer straightened or roller set styles 3. I can't stand ANY of the Shea Moisture products! 4. my hair thrives on glycerine based products year round 5. my hair is prone to being porous 6. I should've lost all of my extra weight before going natural😡 7. my hair grows faster and I retain more hair with Relaxed hair 8. I enjoy my texture, but my hair is far too coily to do wash n go's...j actually can't stand wash n goods on MY hair although I have the texture for it there's more.. but, yeah 😕
we share a lot of the same lessons learned- including Hating SHEA MOISTURE PRODUCTS! I found anything with behentrimonium in it (not at the end of the ingredients list though ) my hair hates!
OMG - I hear you about the big chop. I'm a huge advocate of getting rid of dead, unhealthy hair, but I suggest that people find out what works for them first, really find out how to take care of your hair and start trimming away gradually. Better chance of keeping the hair on your head. Great list!
I agree. I went back natural for 6.5 yrs and the same issues that haunted me when I was relaxed began to haunt me after 2-3 yrs of being natural. I never deep conditioned my hair, never put anything on my ends...I was always flat ironing once it grew out. My hair grew so much thicker and pretty initially because all I did was cornrows with extensions and kept my scalp oiled. But of course when it grew out, I brought out the flat irons and did not properly moisturize my hair. Sooo I am back to the relaxer and learning now that is more about listening to your hair and what it needs. Proper maintenance is key. Relaxers don't always have to be bad unless overdone/overprocessed. And you cannot use excessive heat no matter if you're relaxed or not. Your ends must be cared for, relaxed or not. Deep conditioning is a must, relaxed or not. And yes, natural hair IS a ton of work. I spent hours just washing, detangling, blow drying and flat ironing my hair...And that was without even deep conditioning. lol It is a wonder I still have hair because I never deep conditioned period and my poor ends. Omg lol 😂 Anywho, great video!
“Getting my hair to look I its best with minimal effort” Yep, I hear you! I have been natural for 12 years and will be relaxing within the next two weeks! Love your vids!
I've been relaxing since 1988. My second go round, the 1st time I relaxed was in HS and what did I know, apparently nothing! As it started to wear off I put in a Toni; which is a perm(ammonium thioglycollate) all my hair started falling like needles off a Christmas tree! The second time around I took the time to educate myself & take my time doing my own hair. I love my fully relaxed hair!
Barbara Larkins I'm so glad it worked out, Barbara! Having your hair break like that must have been really disheartening. When I started educating myself, my hair thrived. So glad to have you here!
Thank you. I love my relaxed hair because I don't have the patience to deal with natural hair. I love the natural look but I never imagined it was that much work.
Barbara Larkins This is the real me, Barbara, although my little sisters would say I'm more on the "bossy/mother hen" side. Lol! Thanks for your kind words!!
Honey, I'm at work totally distracted and in love with your videos! I recently returned to relaxed hair after being natural for 5 years and Shea Moisture is the devil! LoL. Thank you so much for sharing such helpful info.
On the occasions where I burn my scalp, I use neem oil on the area and its works wonders like the aloe vera. And neem oil has a “different odor” but it’s worth it.
Thank you for being honest in this video. Personally I'm not fond of Shea Moisture hair products and I find the line to be overrated. I'm currently natural but plan on getting a Japanese cold smoothing treatment, 'aka' Japanese thermal reconditioning, in order to make my hair more manageable by slightly loosening the curl pattern and eliminating frizz. I've been natural for many years and I love my natural hair but the maintenance is too tedious. I don't have the time nor the energy for the constant upkeep of my hair in this point of my life.
LuvBytes07 I totally agree with you, re: maintaining natural hair. It's great for some and not so much for others. While I absolutely love natural hair, at this point, I just cannot manage it. I think some Shea Moisture products are great! I'm really fond of their shampoos but that conditioner was truly terrible.
4:39 To mitigate burning you should try basing your scalp. Some people use oil (light or heavy) 3 days before (sometimes the night before). You shouldnt experience burning if your scalp has been prepped for the process.
I have a love/ hate relationship with that hair masque. The first 2 times I used it my relaxed hair was like buttah. After that it went all down hill. Lessons learned: Not all sulphate free shampoos are made equally lol (some don't clean my hair at all). My hair does not like over stretching (12 weeks is my limit). Too little manipulation isn't great for my hair because then it just tangles and mattes.
I had the same problem with relaxers burning my scalp for years. Then I met a hairdresser who would relax the back of my hair first then wash it out then do the front and wash it out. Then last year I discovered straight from Eden relaxer by creme of nature. It is the first relaxer that I can apply to my entire head without burning.
I love your points. I also love the ease of dealing with relaxed hair. I live in a country where things are expensive. There is no way I could maintain using whole jars of products in one or two weeks. I would be broke as well.
Something that really minimizes burning for me is jbco mixed with olive oil in an applicator bottle to apply to scalp 1-2 days before relaxer is my must. Dont massage it in just apply its great!.
Thank you for sharing so much of your knowledge. Relaxers have come up! It sounds like your stylist is using the lye relaxer formula, and I highly recommend Phyto Specific Hair Relaxer Index 1 no lye relaxer. No chemical burns (though it can be pricy) and just use a chelating shampoo monthly to remove any mineral build up. I haven’t had a chemical burn since the early 2010’s.
I love your videos you are beautiful inside and out I love your hair I Inspire to have hair as long as yours finally I got my hair to grazing bra strap length it's the longest it's been since I was a child. I read a natural say one time that relaxing your hair was a sign of self-hatred and that we didn't love the hair that God gave us that made me so mad I like you relax my hair because it's easier not because I'm trying to be somebody else or don't love who I am I look so forward to your videos I watch them over and over again thank you so much
Ironically I learned while natural that my hair NEEDS protein twice a week, so I wash and deep condition twice a week under the dryer for 20 minutes! I have to deep that frequently! I swear by UBH Conditioner by Cathy Howse! I have been relaxed since June 2015, after being natural for four years. Love my hair both ways. Your hair looks amazing! I think black women should return to rollersetting!
Even when I was natural for 7 years and have tried the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque many times and it always made my hair feel dry too!!! My hair HATES that stuff!!! I thought something was wrong with my natural hair since everyone raved about it!
This is a great video. I've learned that hot oil treatments and deep conditioning are vital to the health of my hair. Water and exercise have really sped up my growth as well as vitamins.
Haha! I thought I was the only one who hates that deep conditioner. So many people hyped it up that I figured I would try it. It made my hair feel heavy but dry. I use the Macadamia Deep Repair Mask. It's amazing!
Ugh - that deep conditioner was the worse! I love the smell of that Macadamia stuff, but it made me break out terribly. So sad! I know it's a good one, but it also made my hair quite greasy.
Hello....Love you channel. I'm a new subscriber and I am natural. Your hair is gorgeous and looks healthy. I'm not one of those naturals who try to police others. Great video. Saw the video with your natural sisters and enjoyed that one as well.
oh yeah......you were correct about the time factor to care for natural hair. my hair is as long as yours and it takes me a couple of hours on the weekend to cleanse and style.
GetReal 4Real Thank you so much! I'm a huge believer in sound makes makes you happy (as long as you aren't hurting others). I don't understand my women are so hard on each other especially over something as trivial as hair. Thanks so much for supporting my channel! Means a lot!
OMG!!! I LOVE YOU!!! ***new subbie*** & I'm natural & considering relaxing again...I deal with a health condition & my natural hair is taking too much energy 😩
phattlife I'm sorry to hear about your health condition! That is the main reason I relax my hair. It's just so much easier to maintain. Take care of yourself, ok?
If you want a game changer deep conditioner, try the BeeMine Deep Conditioner. It's heaven sent and makes your hair feel like absolute butter. I credit it to the 20 inches I have on my head😊
Your hair! Beautiful. I learned that taking care of my hair (natural) needs lots of moisture and deep conditioner. Relax or natural hair require work and dedication. 😂 on the shea moisture! 😍👍🏽
Great video! Your hair is beautiful! I also relax my hair and have found some of the same things as far as minimizing heat, wrapping my hair, etc., to be helpful too! 'Looking forward to your upcoming videos, thanks so much!
I really enjoyed your relaxer hair videos & your honesty. I love relaxer hair it's so much easier to take care if. I totally agree with the things to point our about hair ..
Thank you for sharing keep up the good work looking forward to seeing you again so beautiful great job. I do not have relax hair now for about a year. I been thinking about relax again but not sure what I will do. My hair have change a lot now
i have been natural for four years now and I love it soooo much. After four years I'm now 14 inches and the struggle is real to take care of it. Being a mom and leading a busy life, I hate that I have to rush taking care of my hair it is a lot of work especially on wash days. I have been missing the sleek, straight look and feeling for a change so Im thinking of relaxing my hair but not looking forward to burns. thats one reason I had stopped relaxing it was soooo bad.
Why not try the Japanese hair straightening? I haven't heard of it burning anyone. It keeps your hair straight like a relaxer, but better I heard. I'm natural, so I wouldn't know by experience, however, my aunt has been doing it for sometime now. Look into it if you like.
Hhhm - I will on your suggestion. Thank you so much! My girlfriend did it. She is white, but has really coarse and curly hair. It worked wonders for her...
I am, too, concerned about your burning and scabs. I have a very sensitive scalp (Tea Tree shampoo was a disaster for me) but my stylists have always said that if it's burning it's time to rinse immediately. My stylist currently uses Mizani Butter Blends Sensitive Scalp, and I'm typically asleep through the entire process (Friday night partying!).
Style Domination Exactly...i had one who was great as well back then. U kno.....im gon follow ur channel. I followed UloveMegz some yearz back. She was relaxed for a long time too. Her personality grabbed me, just like u. She currently is goin back natural and n da 9th month of transition. We all can learn from each other no matter wat our state of hair is.
Style Domination My natural hair care is very simple and easy... I use affordable non and natural hair productz. Never been a product junkie, dont plan on it lolz. I love some of da Pantene Truly Naturals productz. Staplez r their Co wash (which is like a dupe of As I Am Co Wash, but cheaper) and their DC which has great slip. Love Aussie Moist productz as well. Staplez r da Mega Moist Shampoo & conditioner and of course my boo/love 3 Min Miracle DC. No deep conditioner has topped it yet lolz. Far as natural productz, i use Botanicals Touch Mint & Manuka Honey DC, da Shea & Argan Keratin DC (as my protein treatment when needed)....da Bamboo Castor Leave-in and Triple Butter Hair Cream r my booz too. Love em!! U can find them on www.botanicalstouch.com... Also love an all natural oil mix from Miche Beauty called Polished. www.michebeauty.com. I keep my regimen simple and affordable. Oh and i find great dealz on productz, even see high end onez n Kroger grocery store. So check ya local grocery storez. Alot cheaper. Also my fave online grocery store Jet carry cheaper dealz on hair & body care. www.jet.com.. 😊😊
I'm natural and hates this product as a DC but it works great as a styler for my twist outs.... I've had my natural hair longer than yours (and extremely thick) and decided to cut it to give myself a break from styling. Now I am growing it back to mid back BBC have a found an effective lazy technique to care for it lol. But I understand you wanting to wear it straight. It is your choice. And yes the price of hair products is awful here in Canada...
I bought millions of she moisture products 🥲😩😳 they didn’t work on my natural. Now I am relaxed they have proved to be crap. My natural is thin strands that can’t stand too much manipulation. Being relaxed means less manipulation for me 🥰
Crystal Fleming Haha! Thank you, Crystal! Mrs. Cole was such a beauty. I'm honoured that you think I look like her. Promise - I won't sing for you. Lol!
Hi! Thank you for the video! I've learned my hair likes Natural products like Eden and True. I deep condition weekly switching off with products for moisture and protein. I do "braidouts" on my relaxed hair for low manipulation. My hair has been growing nicely since making these changes in the last year.
Thank you about the Shea moisture deep treatment masque. It's terrible! The worst 'deep conditioner' I've ever used. I know what works for one person might not work for another, but seriously. It really is crap.
Trenita Yancey Oh wow, Trenita! I'm always surprised when long-term naturalistas go natural. Ok - do your research and remember, moisturizing and deep conditioning are your best friends. Good luck with your relaxer!
Beautiful lady and beautiful hair. I'm relaxed also and my sister is natural with beautiful hair. I haven't tried any of the Shea products but I do love aunt jackies in control deep conditioner, it works wonders for my hair
I love this!!!...I've got relaxed hair but I've never taking care of it, I only just decided to take care of my hair about a month ago...I was actually gonna cut all my hair off and go natural thinking that would help but I'm a busy medical imaging student...I've seen videos and realised how expensive and time consuming having a natural hair is so I dropped the thought...and decided to start taking care of the one I've got. This helped a lot...realised I'm sort of doing everything you mentioned...I wash my hair ones a week now and put a lot of natural oil treatment in it....all I need are some products to help grow my hair. Cause even though I've got a medium length hair it's really thin....also it doesn't help I got a bald spot from a burnt scar on my left side from relaxing my hair few months back.😭
Flo Oh no! I'm sorry to hear about your relaxer scar. Please be careful! I put a little Vaseline on my scalp before relaxers and that helps a lot. Get a good trim and keep doing what you're doing. Sounds like you are on the right track!
flo!!!you are everywhere!!! I think I've seen you in chrolli videos comments or somewhere 😂😂😂in many videos I watch... there you are 2 months before...
juju bean LOL this cracked me up...the thing is you're actually not the first person to say this. Bloody hell I'm actually starting to get a bit worried😂...well at least I get to meet a fellow Chrolli fan.
love your videos, im starting on a new hair care journey thanks to your advices! i recently moved to ottawa and was wondering what hair salon you go to because im having difficulty finding a good, affordable one.
I wore my hair relaxed for 35 years then 3 years ago this month I went natural I will tell you Shea products made my hair dry and I lost a lot of hair my first year of transition because I didn’t know the problem was the product. I spent over the next 2 years hundreds and hundreds of dollars trying to maintain my natural hair that wasn’t doing what everyone else hair was doing on RU-vid and also spending over an hour every morning trying to do something with my mess. So a few weeks ago I went back to a relaxer and damn it my hair is breaking and I could just cry. Right now I’m trying to stop it from breaking There were good things about being natural like my hair could get wet and I didn’t care but it wasn’t working for me.
I really want to get my natural hair relaxed sooooo bad. Im too scared to do it myself and its scary having to trust that whoever does it will know how to handle my virgin 4c and know how to handle it properly with a relaxer. I been watching videos and researching for like 3 days now and the more i learn about it the more nervous i get about finding the right stylist to do it. Most of the salons in my area dont really seem like they deal with my kind of hair or they seem sketchy.
Ok I will go and get checked out. I use the Kera care line shampoo, conditioner, wrap lotion and the shea moisture Jamaican black castor oil strengthen & restore leave in conditioner. But I have not been doing a deep conditioner that I see you talk about alot.
My hair is relaxed, and I use the raw Shea butter deep treatment by sheamoisture and I absolutely love it.Try adding a tablespoon of olive oil to the masque next time :)
Style Domination also try using a clarifying shampoo before using the masque,I find that clarifying my hair before trying a new product it gives the new product a fighting chance.
I recently used the raw Shea Butter Moisture Retention Shampoo and Restorative Conditioner and love them, but I think it's the old formula. Now I need to buy more, but I think the formula has changed and I'm hesitant to buy the new formula. I've not use the deep conditioner in the jar, but I'm not sure now. I am using the Manuka. Honey and Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque and I love it. Oh the smell and the slip.
Hi Rivy! I do have a couple, but I feel the friction of tossing and turning (I'm a major toss and turner) on even a silk pillow case makes my hair tangled and a little crazy. I like the head scarves because it keeps all of my hair in place. ;o)
Hello All, New Sub. I've been watching now for about a month and I love Mrs. D. I've been looking for someone to help and discuss how to Relax and Conditions my hair. I suffer from Alapicia at the top of my head. I've been deep conditioning my hair with Pantine and I love it. Also, now I'm into Essential oils, and I love them too. My hair is now growing back and keep my hair in a bun. I look a picture, after losing my hair, you can now see it from my picture.
Raye Taylor Hi Raye! Awww! I’m so glad we found each other. And I’m even more happy that my tips are helping you! Thrilled that you are recovering and seeing results, girl! xo
Hi there! I love Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo Number Three. It's my all-time favourite. Most clarifying shampoos will make your hair feel a little stripped, but this one is better than most.
So inbetween relaxers I do protective styling like braids or cornrows or a sew in and I leave them on for about 2 to 3 months as they last that long. So how do I wash my hair weekly and is it necessary???
Hi Dominique, thsnk you for your videos, I'm learning a lot. I have relaxed hair and I was wondering how I can moisturize my hair when my hair is flat ironed, I put serum or oil but this is not moisture. I of course deep condition at each shampoo.. Thanks in advance for your answer.
Hi Gem! Not usually, but sometimes! I like adding Joico KPAK Revitaluxe to the oils to thicken it up a bit. But yeah - usually, I just stick to the oils.
Hmmm. Good question. I think that's a video in the making! LOL! I prefer buns. So easy. Pretty chignons are good too. For wash routines, I like to wash my hair and throw it in a bun for the winter, but it gets so cold...that sometimes I end up just drying and flat ironing. Excited to get my curlers to reduce this though!
Your hair is beautiful. You are a very beautiful and sweet joung woman. Yes I brought that product too and my hair had the same reaction as yours. Straighten and cared hair as you have, my opinion, is more classy; chique. I liked to meet you! 😘💋🙋🏽
