I agree with you, I only mark passages and verses that stand out to me, therefore not making whatever Bible I’m using a total mess. I keep the highlighters down in most Bibles, simply to have the Bible look neater, but still color-coordinated and useful. Highlighters are good for emphasis in underlined passages, but not usually the whole verse or passage. I reference the note not with lines leading to the passage, but by noting what chapter and verse it is, and then drawing a box around it or underline it. Again, it’s not so messy, but still looks nice. My main problem is know what exactly to write in the margins. Usually what I write is a commentary on the passage, or a prayer taken from the scripture. I wish I could be more scholarly. Thanks for sharing your video with us.

Sometimes I'll take a commentary and photocopy or copy/paste from logos... print it... and put it in my Bible using the "add pages to your Bible" technique I've shared before. That way some other dude did all the writing for me. lol

I use similar note-taking in my journaling Bible. My newest journaling Bible has really thin paper, so I was having issues with show-through with all the types of pens I have. Now I am doing all of my underlining and boxing with top quality artist's colored pencils, which have softer leads. My favorites are the Faber-Castell colored pencils (not the watercolor pencils). I bought duplicates in my main colors in open stock at Hobby Lobby for $1.49 each. Prisma Premier pencils are very similar, too, and can also be found in open stock. The best part is that I can erase! Sometimes I extend the line a little too far or have a big wobble by mistake. I have several shades of blue, purple, and green so that I can visually differentiate my box colors and underlining. Since I've started doing that, I don't need to draw the arrows, which I find distracting.

Cool video. As a truck driver I find it impossible to take notes while other driver is driving. Getting a laptop for the road this week probably so I can just do it electronically. Logos. But I like a paper bible so much better. Just can’t change your notes or fix them. Thanks for insight on taking notes. Organization is a problem for me.

Great video as per usual. Have you ever tried "phrasing" or "block diagrams" or "mechanical layout" (has other AKAs)? (It is something like Logos' propositional outlines [visual filter].) If so, I'd be interested in seeing how you incorporate them into your study. These have been revolutionary for me to help see structure and relationships in a passage. I first learned about it from watching videos by Bill Mounce, who also has a section on them in his book "Greek for the rest of us". There are also some threads on the Logos forum.

I just found your channel yesterday. Great info on Bible journaling. Another good set of markers I like to use are Zebra Mildliners. Great variety of colors and one end is chiseled and the other is a round tip. Christian Book (CBD) is having a Cyber sale thru the 30th and they have journaling Bibles for as low as $8.99. After watching your video, I decided to purchase another one just for my chronological study. Great tips and thanks for sharing! Joy2Plan

Hey, I've always have held the lord close to my heart but recently I have felt the need to pick up a bible and start reading. Now the first feat was figuring out what translation i wanted to started with and you videos helped me with that!! I was wondering when you say you go to look at the orginal word, what exactly do you mean. Is that the king James or what? Lol:p but my goal is to be able to read and understand the word that the lord wrote and I feel like that can be tough with the newer translations? Thank you for the videos!

I have really enjoyed your RU-vid posts. So much so that I’m tempted to get a journaling bible though I currently use an ESV Wide Margin Bible. I did have a question for you. Do you only read the NASB and ESV? Do you ever read more translations than these? And are you using your resources(commentaries/word studies) during your reading time? I watched your other video about what you do in the morning and evening and was just wondering are you reading without highlighting at night or is there some note taking at that time too. I ask because I have many resources that I use but I’m feeling they are at times bogging me down and I’m not allowing the Holy Spirit to speak because I’m “chasing rabbits” in my resources. It’s getting better but I like what you in your posts. Answer back when and if you can. I completely understand if you don’t and I will still be a subscriber because your posts are helping me to figure some things out. Blessings to you and the ministry you have here. Raymond
@TearUpYourBible
@TearUpYourBible 6 лет назад
Raymond Cook thanks my friend!!! I’m pretty committed the the NASB/ESV I don’t read anything else at this time (or for several years) and I don’t really reference other translations often either. As far as reading time... reading is reading only. No notes, highlights or research. I think I looked something up once... but I don’t remember what. 😂 Reading time isn’t nearly as high impact as the study time, but it’s nice to have a good, long, consecutive flow through the book. It has a more recreational feel to it. If my day is packed and something has to go, it’s the reading. I prioritize the study... BUT I really enjoy that reading time.

I checked the Tombow prices out after watching your earlier video about testing all your pens & they're pretty expensive. I thought you mentioned your inkjoy pens had too much show through in your journaling bible but I love those pens too. I'm still experimenting with different pens. What's the reason you're not going to use the Sharpie art pens anymore? I was still thinking of ordering those 🤔

Ok. My only concern about this is the lines from the text to the note...you can't see through the lines? So doesn't that line it make it harder to read the text later?

Do you ever have trouble reading the pages after you've written your notes? I'm curious if the lines from the word or passage to your note box have ever make it difficult.
@TearUpYourBible
@TearUpYourBible 6 лет назад
Not so much. BUT, I will say a larger text size would help... because the line would be smaller in ratio to the letters. But, it’s not used for casual reading, so if I’m having trouble reading it, I’m looking closely enough to give it a moment to come through to my eyes.

Hey Jason. Great video! It was a bit odd to hear you say God's instructions for his people and grace are complete opposites. Especially from a guy big on context. Paul certainly kept the Law and like you and me was saved by grace through faith (and not through works). I'm not sure if there's a doctrinal bias you might have or what, but the law and grace go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly. I know some people teach the law was done away with but scripture certainly doesn't. Until Heaven and Earth pass away my friend... Best wishes.

"by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace," - Scritpure I would suggest going back to episode 1 and watching all of my Galatians teachings so you can get a clear picture of my theological position on the issue. :-) It takes about 2 hours to watch. :-)
@Johnny_3_Putt
@Johnny_3_Putt 6 лет назад
Grace For Life with Jason Mayfield The Greek word katargeo actually means to render powerless. Abolished is a far less common definition. The dividing wall of hostility rendered powerless. As far as Galatians goes it's the issues of Acts 15 again. The false teachers come in and teach circumcision prior to conversion (works of the law for salvation) and Paul reiterates Deuteronomy 10:16, 30:6 explaining circumcision of the heart comes first. Obedience is evidence of faith not a means to salvation. I think where most go wrong in Galatians is understanding the law of sin (and death) is not the same thing as the Law of God. They say silly things like God's ways are a burden when scripture repeatedly speaks of it as Liberty. And why would Paul teach against the law when Jesus repeated taught the law? He didn't. He delighted in the Law. Galatians, like Romans focuses on the law of sin (and death) the most. Paul talks about 7 different laws so I understand it's confusing. This is why Peter warned us people would do dingy things and twist Paul's words in 2 Peter 3:17-21. Paul was a Torah observant Jew teaching the law to Gentiles wherever he went. Acts 24:13-14, Romans 3:31, 7:11-12. Remember sin is only defined in scripture as lawlessness. And those who do not keep God's instructions are lawless. I don't think anyone wants to be the ones saying Lord! Lord! But it's the lawless who are cast away. The only way to gain eternal life is keeping the commandments.
@TearUpYourBible
@TearUpYourBible 6 лет назад
I'm going to keep teaching the gospel of Grace as it has been revealed to me through the scripture. I disagree with the majority of what you've posted, but it's my practice to refrain from typed/written debate. Again, I invite you to watch my entire Galatians series. :-)
@TearUpYourBible
@TearUpYourBible 6 лет назад
But I do want to add that in regards to our ministry's theological position (for future readers) we would regard the phrase "The only way to gain eternal life is keeping the commandments." as false teaching and anti-gospel. Jesus has completely fulfilled the law on behalf of any and all that have faith in Him. The only way to gain eternal life is to receive the free gift of righteousness by grace through faith.
@Johnny_3_Putt
@Johnny_3_Putt 6 лет назад
Grace For Life with Jason Mayfield fair enough. We can agree to disagree agreeably. And you should keep teaching grace. Without it we are lost. I do want to support my statement with scriptures so you can at least see where I’m coming from. Matthew 19:16-17 And behold, a man came up to him, saying, “Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life?” 17 And he said to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments.” Luke 18:18-22 And a ruler asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.” 22 When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” Luke 10:25-28 And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.” Revelation 22:12-14 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city. 1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 2:3-5 And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him, 5 but whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him John 14:21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him. Matthew 7:21-23 21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ (definition for lawlessness/iniquity = 1 John 3:4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.)

Weird you think that the covenant of law and grace are opposite. That's a Reformed fallacy. Hope you see through that at some point. The difference between the two is that Christ fulfilled the law so that when we fail he can intercede on our behalf. If the two covenants were opposite Paul would have said law was bad but earlier in Romans he says the law is good ;)
