I read “The R**e of Nanking” a few years ago and it’s definitely an emotional book. Its so descriptive that you feel like you are there during the invasion seeing it all happen and there’s nothing you can do. I’d highly recommend reading in chunks, read some, step away.

Tortilla Flat is a really fun short story by Steinbeck. Definitely a quick read and somewhat heartwarming but it’s really pretty funny too. Def recommend for you!

Real happy you’re enjoying The Road. That book, and Cormac in general, is why I picked up reading. No one writes like him, extremely poetic and whimsical in some sense. ❤

I just read ‘day of the triffids’ by John Wyndham, I think you would like it as well and is not a long book at all. Could probably do it in a couple of toilet visits. Dystopian horror with plants and i think its a classic as well.

I've decided I'm getting back into Stormlight too - I've read the first three, now going to dive into Rhythm of War - which I'm hoping is Dalinar-centric as he's my favourite character. Love me some "Brandy Sandy' and I've heard the fifth installment is due out this year some time. I hope you enjoy Words if you read it, its awesome.

As for Steinbeck, I really liked "A Russian Journal". Might also be interesting for you from a Photographers perspective. Its non-fiction and basically a travel report from his journey together with Robert Capa to the young Soviet Union right after WWII (1947 or 1949 or something like that). Really liked it!

I have just started reading about a year ago, never tried before but loving it in general. Probably an unpopular opinion but I found The Great Gatsby to be a tad overrated. Just didnt hook me. A pretty short read I would recommend is The Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Something really different but intriguing. Also for a laugh and an extremely light read go with Ayoade on Too - Richard Ayoade Currently working through the Three Body Problem series at the moment too, sci fi but again a really interesting concept. (I am yet to find my niche haha so trying everything)

Words of Radiance is very good but the 3rd one, Oathbringer, took me so long to get through 😮‍💨 Was a real struggle. But its focus is on Dalinar and I am not a fan of him. I have yet to motivate me for Rhythm of War 😂 The other day my hubby was talking to a friend about Steinbeck and he recommended Grapes of Wrath 🤩

One flew over the cuckoos nest, brave new world, running the light, communion, and battle Royale, if you happen to come across them in the wild. And I would bet that copy of 1984 you got jumps into your top ten all time. Cheers!

I think it is better to be safe then sorry. I hate that certain words are being censored though. Yes it is a horrible thing to happen to anybody but I also believe we should be talking about these things using the words so that we can learn and fight against the acts. Yes this is hypocritical, the fact that I am avoiding the word as well 😂

Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. As a pulitzer prize winner, The Grapes of Wrath is very highly regarded and very good, but iI preferred East of Eden. My first Steinbeck book was Cannery Row and I loved it. That's the book that hooked me. I guess it was actually my 2nd Steinbeck. We read Of Mice and Men in school, also great. This is why he's one of my favorite authors!
@ib_ratton

Great book choices! You should read Grapes of Wrath first so that East of Eden becomes your Steinbeck favorite! Save the best for last 😂 Travels with Charley is another popular Steinbeck and is actually a nonfiction! It follows Steinbeck and his dog as they trek across America. It's a short read and really fun!

I saw The R**e of Nanking as a movie which lead me to the book. I’m not sure what the movie is called (if it is T.R.O.N.?), but it was about a fake priest who helped hide a school of girls from the enemy army. It was excellent! 💔

Reading Nanking when I was in high school was just traumatic. I would highly recommend The Poppy War trilogy by RF Kuang who uses historical events like Nanking in a fantasy setting featuring a female antihero - there’s never enough of those - studying at a war college and then ends up going to war
