I give you a realistic overview of what I spend in a week living in NYC (in 2021). This video is great if you're thinking of moving to NYC and want to know how much you could be spending realistically. I do not live a bougie lifestyle here, but is it still expensive to live in new york? YES. Cost of living in NYC in 2021, is very different from years prior because of adjustment's we've made to our budget with the pandemic happening. I hope you find this interesting on how much I spend in a week in NYC.

This is the most accurate video about NYC living!! Lived here for 2 years and have almost identical expenses. You can get cheaper gym, wash some of your own clothes once in a while or hang dry, not have AC, etc. to cut on expenses but like you said, it really has to do with the lifestyle you're looking for (!!!). I cannot stress this enough, if you cannot afford the lifestyle you want in NYC then it probably isn't worth it and you'll be chasing something that isn't realistic. It wears on you. You have to be prepared to live the lifestyle you can afford because the city is very unforgiving. Great video and loved the breakdowns, this would be so helpful to people thinking of moving here!

I took myself to Manhattan to live in 1951 from Ohio. I took letters of reference from my Ohio employers. Lived in a ywca on 37th and Lexington. Went to NY employment a short distance downtown which sent me to several companies to interview for work and was hired by one. Standards Brands, a food company at Madison and 57th. Loved my 60 years living in ny which followers. Now live retired in AZ.

Hi Chelsea, I really have enjoyed your videos and fun personality. I listened to your marathon video as I was driving to work and you had me in tears as you were approaching the finish line. I am quite a few years older, and believe it or not my dream is to live in New York City for one year all by myself, I absolutely love New York and appreciate all of your tips. Remember, the next time you buy paint that they provide string sticks at no cost! All you have to do is ask them ❤

If you want more accurate weekly expenses, instead of dividing by 4, you should multiply the monthly expenses by 12, then divide by 52 weeks. There’s a discrepancy by dividing by 4 weeks as not all months have the same number of days. For example if all months had 4 weeks * 12 months that would equal 48 weeks a year instead of the actual 52.

If you haven't, consider purchasing a portable washing machine. I have one. I dont have a dryer, so I use a drying rack. My washer cost 250$ on amazon. So if you are paying 40$/month in laundry, that's equivalent to 6 months. I have no stress anymore and I can do laundry in the comfort of my own home no matter where I move to! Also, it's paid for itself since I bought mine last year. No more quarters!
@ChelseaCallahan

This is very similar to London, except we don't have healthcare insurance. But I do save holiday money every month. I average this out to 300 per month for ski trips, city breaks etc. Your travel expenses are similar to London's tubes. Question: what would be the cost of a meal out with wine?

LOL...I paid only $90 dollars a month for a one bedroom , one bath, large eat in kitchen , living room apt on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the early 1970s when I was single and working as a fashion illustrator, and that was rent controlled, an old brownstone! With two roomates that was $30 dollars each! Then I rented a brand new studio apt. when I moved to the suburbs, with AC, a full walk in closet, huge linen closet, galley kitchen, one bath with tub along with swimming pool/tennis courts for just $162 a month! That same apt on the Upper East Side, now renovated goes for $2500 - 3000 a month for one person! Used to pay just 10 dollars a month for food and next to nothing for utilities! Subway fare was 35 cents a ride, movies were $1.25, a drink at a single's bar was around 2 -3 dollars! A bounced check was just $3.00!! What are the skyrocketed prices today! And we thought inflation was bad in the 1970s?? HA!! I wouldn't pay any of the exhorbitant prices today that have gone through the stratosphere since then, just shows you just how GREEDY people have gotten these days and everything keeps on going up and up..the landlords, real estate, property taxes, home insurance, the greedy banks with their outlandish fees!

This definitely puts things in perspective! I want to move there so I want to make sure my current lifestyle will realistic or not in nyc (probably not because I currently pay $400 in rent.)😳 What I’ve always wondered is the difference between eating out and dining in. I feel like food in grocery stores is so expensive there that the difference between that and dining out isn’t so big, but I’m not 100% sure? This was a very interesting video!
@ChelseaCallahan
@ChelseaCallahan 3 года назад
Hey Alexa! This is such a good question. Depending on where you grocery shop food can be super expensive. Trader Joe's has become my staple because of it's affordability & quality, and it's definitely cheaper though than dining out! I spend around $80 a week on groceries but one night's dinner in a restaurant can be $75-$100. It really just depends where you go though!
