This is my second video answering your FAQ's (frequently asked questions) about moving to NYC in 2021. I have a whole playlist dedicated to helping you prepare to move with realistic advice. In this video, I address planning overwhelm for those of you who don't even know where to begin with your move to NYC, a spring city update, how much you should save before moving, and SO MANY helpful tips I wish I knew before I moved here almost 5 years ago. I also talk about new york city during the pandemic, how to start planning to move to NYC, and living in NYC on a budget!

The grab and go lunch spot reminded me of the one time I got lunch from the Whole Foods hot line and ended up paying 30$ cuz I didn’t understand the price per ounce thing. Bruh. Who knew 3 pounds of Mac and cheese and veggies and chicken and roasted potatoes cost so much? Lol

Great you mentioned coming to the city even if you've been there before because a lot has changed! I was last in NYC in 2004 and I only got to run all over NY for one day. Thanks for the great advice!

You make me feel more sure of my reasoning for wanting to live in New York City. Especially in my early 20’s when I'm trying to find my identity and also juggle mental health. I hope that New York is a good decision as far as making a life for myself. I always feel so nervous trying to move to such a hectic hustle-culture city when dealing with anxiety issues. You help me realize it's possible!! Love your content.

These sound like good tips! I’m definitely going to keep them in mind. I’m thinking when I finally move this year i’ll probably start at a sublet and THEN find a lease if I even qualify. I guess that’s where getting a job will be very important. 😅 I’ve graduated from college and I’ve already gotten experience of a decent paying job so I think that will help. And the good thing is that I’ve saved so much that I’m not too worried. It’s just that first step of following through with everything that’s so scary! 😭
@ChelseaCallahan
@ChelseaCallahan 3 года назад
Alexa, you're nailing it! The follow thru is definitely scary, but you're doing everything right! 🙂the sublet-to-lease is best case scenario also so you have more time to find a neighborhood you like for a more permanent living situation. 🎯

LOL...I paid only $90 dollars a month for a one bedroom , one bath, large eat in kitchen , living room apt on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in the early 1970s when I was single and working as a fashion illustrator, and that was rent controlled, an old brownstone! With two roomates that was $30 dollars each! Then I rented a brand new studio apt. when I moved to the suburbs, with AC, a full walk in closet, huge linen closet, galley kitchen, one bath with tub along with swimming pool/tennis courts for just $162 a month! That same apt on the Upper East Side, now renovated goes for $2500 - 3000 a month for one person! Used to pay just 10 dollars a month for food and next to nothing for utilities! Subway fare was 35 cents a ride, movies were $1.25, a drink at a single's bar was around 2 -3 dollars! A bounced check was just $3.00!! What are the skyrocketed prices today! And we thought inflation was bad in the 1970s?? HA!! I wouldn't pay any of the exhorbitant prices today that have gone through the stratosphere since then, just shows you just how GREEDY people have gotten these days and everything keeps on going up and up..the landlords, real estate, property taxes, home insurance, the greedy banks with their outlandish fees!

Thank you for your tips! I love the last bit about knowing the reasons why you’re there especially when times get tough. I’d love to hear more about that and what keeps you going. What advises can you give to someone who’s interested in moving to NYC in their early 30s? Disadvantages? Any advantages? Dating? Social life and making friends?
@ChelseaCallahan
@ChelseaCallahan 3 года назад
Hi! Thanks for watching 🙂Those are great questions! There are a lot of people here in their 30's thriving! There is no shortage of people to date and befriend. Parks and bars are a great place to start. I've also made amazing friends who were my colleagues, so I hope that for you!! I'll keep thinking about these questions and add it to the next FAQ!

I moved from Los Angeles from Stockholm, Sweden with my mother begging me ”pleeease find housing before you move!” I was thinking I was gonna find something when i was there.. i’m glad i did look for roommates (and met them in my hometown Stockholm before I moved 😅). It worked out as it was suppose to, one of them ended up becoming one of my best friends.

What do you think about the impact of minimum wage laws in NYC, especially for tipped employees like waitresses?
@ChelseaCallahan

I'm all for raising the minimum wage. When i was waitressing I was only getting like $3/hour or something like that, so I needed tips to pay rent.
