What Adam says at the end is very true BUT, the fact that Western countries have become so much more expensive than competitors is due to Western governments artificially ramping up the costs of manufacturing with nonsensical "renewable energy" agendas (I've been following that conundrum for many many years and it doesn't make sense!), their unwillingness to explore and develop cheap and abundant energy, irresponsible monetary and interest rate policies and a perpetually expanding bureaucracy that costs an arm and a leg to sustain. Governments always expect citizens to take the hit and start cutting costs whereas they never do that and always expand like a malignant growth. But any sort of growth that doesn't have an apoptotic/checking mechanism, ends up cancerous and killing the host. The host is us! We pay the taxes! Wake up people, the current path is not sustainable. A Greek sufferer (of a textbook case of an ever-expanding State). P.S. BMW and many other traditionally Western brands, outsourcing the manufacturing of their bikes, or large parts of it, to Chinese producers should sound an alarm for the West. P.S. 2. Exactly like Adam says at the very end, I looked at the market and couldn't justify the prices being asked for inferior bikes (with huge bundles of electronic junk that I will never or seldom use - but will surely have to pay) from those of the recent past. So I bought my second 990 Adventure which I'll try to keep for as long as I can. They don't make bikes like these anymore. Manufacturers don't really want adventure riding to continue. This requires premium parts and that's expensive. They want Starbucks customers to keep buying their bikes and gather at coffee shops to talk about the next bike in line for consumption. Literally and metaphorically.

Take this from another fellow Greek, not necessarily sufferer from the Greek state because I escaped to the US, only to be tormented by ever-increasing, idiocy from EPA and other environmental lobbyists that have no connection to reality; but they always do whatever they coerce you to do, "for your own safety....". If we are being objective here, he sounds more like a BMW paid salesman than any other video I've seen about this bike. This conspiracy of all the youtube reviewers just saying what the sponsor wants is vastly overblown. Just idiots trying to think they are superior by "figuring out" and "knowing more" than everyone else. It's all stupid. The man is sitting there lamenting that the bike that is built to sell bikes isn't built for his 1% of riders style and skill level, and then attempting to justify it by being elitist about a brand well known for charging more than their product is worth. You can get 80% of the BMWs performance, features, and durability for 40% of the cost now, just doesn't make sense to throw your money away at BMW.

Cracking Review! I'd give the bloke who handed over the bike to at the dealership a bit of grief for not going through how to get the ride modes though.😂. Your bit at the end has been something that has been going through my mind a lot lately. Mainly because my 2008 690 is now 16 years old and needs lots of love, but.... KTM still has all the parts available for it. Yes, even they are outsourcing now but their core values are still about building good things with a good dealer network. Sometimes that is worth more in 16 years of ownership than saving a few thousand dollars only to throw the bike away in 5 years after buying it.

Honestly though, I've noticed a lot of dealers sell these bikes having no idea how anything works on them. The dealer that sold me my f850 was a dirt bike guy that was mystified by the menus on the bike. Kinda funny but it's surprising given how much is written online about how the menus function.

And let's not forget about the price, there is NO way i can rake more than 10K Euro to get a bike. I love his content and i love the Adam, but he just missed the biggest group of ADV riders with his comment, the group that have bikes under 10k. Hell, maybe even under 5k. If i had the money to get a 890R or a F900GS Enduro, yes i would buy one. But i just can't like most people. And i was about fudging time the 'Big brands' got some pressure.

Isn't it always the way.. I still don't understand why they split rebound and compression. And watching this forks move thru the stroke. That's a lot of bike to throw around they you so.. but that's what you do.. you show what the bike IS REALLY LIKE. Your test will give future buyers a real guide to its abilities and it's so refreshing to have a tester not bag the general design. I also noticed that you did not gripe about the pillion leg locations.. I wish you would just do tests on all the big hitter's Aprilia, Ducati and more so the we can truly see the aspects of what you are trying to put across. Great test..

Split is more convenient. But also by design should limit range of adjustments which are already usually very limited. I'm all for traditional design and wide range adjustment all day over this "convenience"

Yeah but people want bikes that look like adventure bikes, not necessarily ones that can perform well in the dirt and mud. These are purchases that would be used 90% on the road for commuting and 10% on weekend gravel rides to a campsite. They don't need trick Showa shocks, just something with low running costs and more ground clearance than a typical beginner bike.

@SKgeostrat

I'd submit that precious few riders would ride the 900 like you just did! For enduro racing maybe, but not for riding far from help and resources. Those who do will put the right tires on. You rode the hell out of it, but you almost lost it a couple of times. So, good test for enduro, maybe. Not an adv rider test. The crash bar issue is real. Nothing should be bolted into the engine casing. I'd like,to see you take it in a couple of days ride, with luggage and into adv country. That would be a real test. Apparently, the road handling is really good. But who needs to spend twice the price of a Honda Transalp for a bike that fulfills essentially the same purpose? I'm looking at this video for the second time, and I do agree with his comments about sticking with the real deal, the Afrika Twins, the Yamaha models, the Suzuki bikes, the BMWs, even the KTMs, i.e., all those who put real quality into their bikes and have parts and dealers throughout the world. Who would like to be stuck in Afrika with a Kove?

I think that this is arguably most important, honest and brave stance to take in light of the unravelling of many budget adv brands where an attractive price is likely combination of cutting corners and unfair state subsidies. In the long run it will be beneficial for us, riders to support established brands even if that means paying a premium over the unfair competition

Great video and loved the honesty and your experienced opinions. About the can of worms you opened though... I do agree with a lot of your points there, particularly about having a long term relationship with your 'wife bike' so she's reliable and does as you ask everyday all day, there is a silver lining about 'all this (Chinese, Spanish) crap starting to flood the market. Yes, I agree some of them are straight up copy cats and that is cutting corners to a degraded point. But a lot of these bikes coming out from unknown manufacturers have already been building bikes for years in other markets and even engines for well known brands. But also, these bikes now coming out are bikes that a lot of the market here have been crying out for. That is, they enot just copying. I'm looking at the Kove 450 Rally which is just like a rally bike, but to a cheap price but is a decent weight single with decent fuel range. Look at the Kove 800 which is a twin but weighs a fair chunk less that every other similarly powered bike on the market. Then look at Rieju's 500 Honda rip off, which has an engine exactly the same but also has 4-600kms a fuel range. Cfmoto's 450 twin bike, but a bit porky. KTM were supposed to build a 'unicorn' lightweight 490 adventure bike but that got canned. What I'm getting at is that with this 'crap' flooding the market does come change, variation and options. Not only do we get a great range of adventure bikes across all different classes (most legacy manufacturers are still only pumping out good reliable 700+ cc bikes which they're good at) but we also get lower prices which allows a heap of new riders come into and enter the adventure market. I own a KTM 1290, had a Husky, had an Africa Twin and I choose to pay for that "reliability and known R&D". But I believe it's exciting to see these new bikes coming out and how the market adpats and changes and provides us, the consumer, a whole lotta options. It's a bright future, I think.

Agreed!!! Please give us your no nonsense opinion!!! Coming from a standard but upgraded T7 (owned) theres no doubt the Toureg 660 (tested) is a more refined beast and right up there in capability... BUT I know what I'd rather be riding in the outback due to dealer network and known reliability. The Beemer seems to be a contender - bigger than the Yam and Aprilia but with similar tech to the 660 and with more dealership options in Oz... still holding on to the T7 despite having to contend with tippiness when slow moving... low slung Safari 45lt tank could be the fix?

@@BSpenceTravels I'm from Costa Rica, i agree, italian bikes are not very common in here, heck, not even Kawasaki sells as much as Honda and Yamaha, or even Suzuki, as the owner of a Versys x300, i have had to deal with a few issues myself, because I can't even call the dealership, that has 2 offices within the central area of the country, to ask for an air filter for the Versys x300, because they might not have it in stock, while the Chinese bikes have everything in stock everywhere around the country. Thing is, i would be extremely worried about breaking an Italian bike in Central America too, the support is near non existent, Costa Rica is a very small country, but i live at 200+km away from the closest Kawasaki dealership. I'm lucky that the Versys x300 is not a complicated bike, you won't catch me ever riding an Italian bike, they're too freaking sensitive.

@@BSpenceTravels I don't see why, as any big bike riding through central or South America you are extremely unlikely to get parts. Some US owners still wait for months for parts from Euro bike manufacturers.

09:40 So you're saying the crash bars shouldn't be built for longevity but to be more like crumple zones on a car, where through the "crumpling" (i.e. the deformation of specific parts) energy gets absorbed and doesn't go through into the rest of the bike or in this case directly into the engine block? That seems like a good idea.

To be honest I prefer carbon/kevlar protection at critically vulnerable points like the edges of low tanks (in other bikes) than crash bars. They add a lot of weight, they catch on things, they make servicing harder, etc. Not a fan at all.

Great riding and completely agree about supporting manufacturers who have been in the game for years, decades. There's what, 6 new manufacturers coming out of China and half of them are KTM based? I'd like to hope that we can still continue to support the big names such as Honda, Yamaha, Triumph, BMW, Suzuki... But it's the wild wild west of adventure motoring.

As a Guide and mechanic specializing in BMW’s, I don’t care for the 700-850cc ADV bikes off road. If I’m going off road I use my personal KTM990 or 500exc to lead tours. We are awaiting the 900’s availability and are taking delivery of a 1300 soon. I spent 12 days in Baja on an 850 off road and I just don’t find them capable. Seeing your and other testers wringing out the 900, I’m starting to look forward to getting one. It’ll take a heck of a bike to get me off of my 990!

At the moment some big brands seem to be moving production to Asia, but will they reduce their eye watering prices?

I wrote this before you shared your thoughts on the newer companies; however, I would really enjoy a build series on the new CFMoto 450MT. I’ve seen it shake up the middleweight class, and it offers a pretty decent bang for your buck. I currently own a CFMoto 450SS, and its engine is flavorful, and the bike is great in general. I’ve owned 23 motorcycles, and it's no less of a bike than any Japanese or European bike I’ve owned. But I think it would be interesting to see you compare both ends of the spectrum. CFMoto is the more affordable and approachable option versus the T7 or the BMW. What I’ve found after owning quite a few bikes is that it’s more enjoyable to be surprised with what an affordable bike can do rather than spending a bunch of money on a bike that you know is capable. Anyway, that’s also my opinion, but I still would like to see you try the 450MT. I get that a lot of these manufacturers are popping up, but CFMoto has been around for 30 years, and I think they are going to become a household name like any other big 4.

Great review, Adam. Not everyone needs a new bike - wait a year and buy a used one and get some of the extras for "free". And in reality very few people need all that power, and there aren't many who can really handle it either. Increasing the engine size, power and weight each year is only a money spinner aimed at the well-off. My F650GS/Dakar from 2001 still runs well and I don't need a dealer to service it. Stay safe Adam🕊

Disagree. Its EXACTLY because of R&D that we, now more than ever, need to do our homework on the bikes coming from the "big brands". For example: did you know youve just been riding a Loncin Voge DS900X with bmw electronics attached to it? Yeah, this 15k bike is no better than its 9k chinese counterpart but with german electronics. And people will pay 15k for it. Same goes to ktm. Pretty much all R&D for their parallel twin cylinder engine bikes gets done by CFMoto with production in india. People are paying a premium for these european big-name brands and taking a chinese bike home. Now, just so we are clear on this, im not bashing on chinese bikes at all, in fact theyve gotten ridiculously good in these past years, but then im also not about to drop 15k on a chinese bikes either. So again, we need to do our homework. The fact that they invest and win dakars and such is just pure marketing, unfortunately the r&d that goes into those bikes are not scaling down to the consumer bikes now a days anymore (except obviously for race machines, like an EXC). Homologated street bikes are becoming more chinese by the day. I used to be a test-driver and r&d engineer for the motorcycle industrie and let me tell you, most of you guys would jump back if only you found out just how many of these european high-end bikes are chinese. I will happily keep my T7WR for now...

Correct me if I am wrong, but the 690 enduro range is a direct development from Rally Raid racing in the early 2000s after banning the twins. You are right, the KTM parallel twins have no obvious connection to Rally Raid racing. There is no corresponding class in this competition. I doubt seriously your claim that the parallel twins are a CF Chinese R&D product. Your quite bold statement "you guys would jump back if only you found out just how many of these european high-end bikes are chinese" would be more credible if more specific and backed-up by evidence.

This is the perfect adventure bike...perfect for the BMW marketing department to give to a (former) professional racer to make an impressive video of him doing things that 99.9% of owners are never going to do. How much adventure can you have with a 14.5 litre fuel tank? But the Adventure model has a 23 l fuel tank, you say. Yes it does, and it also weighs more than a R1300GS. How will the 13:1 compression ratio engine run on Opal fuel, let alone whatever is available in Outer Mongolia? This bike is the antithesis of ARiemann1's favourite adventure bike, his XRV750 Africa Twin. He has made videos of many adventures he's had on his Africa Twin, but strangely enough he hasn't made any videos of himself flogging it around a short enduro loop or getting it into a "motorcross situation" (his words). It's amazing what people will say when they are sucking on the teat of a corporate giant. Welcome to 2024, where "Adventure Bikes" are designed for creating Instagram and Tiktok content.
