@@marekkacperski7739 That's a perfectly valid question. To keep the answer short, nobody talks about the "founders" of those camps. As young children, we simply found out that they were in Poland. I'm sure adults know who started the war and who created the camps, but children don't have the historical background and many assume that Poland had something to do with them. Oh well, this video explains the situation and it gives a better perspective on the entire situation. We should work on having a better communication about those important historical events.

Growing up in Poland in the 90’s I have not commonly heard antisemitic comments or views, not in my family, not in my school, and not around my friends. The accusation of western world were so surprising to me and I couldn’t understand how we could live in two such different realities. Poland has always been a diverse country up to the point of WW2. The loss of diversity and utter helplessness to the events in our land is our loss and our trauma too. I doubt that two generations under communism turned us into xenophobic nation. This narrative just didn’t make sense to me but hearing your perspective I see how it could happen. Now that I live in the U.S. majority of my friends are Jewish and I think it’s because we naturally gravitate toward one another as if we shared culture or some kind of genetic memory - which we apparently do. You probably know that, but for anyone reading comments: Concentration camps were German, built in occupied Poland. Poles were being executed in those camps too. During that time the penalty for giving Jews asylum was execution of the entire family. Yet despite that threat many Polish families welcomed Jews to their homes. Many of those families suffered the penalty.

@@lerubenfeld Thank you! I remember that around 2007 my small (25k) town was visited by many orthodox Jews. Later I learned that demography was 33% Polish, 33% Jewish and 33% german before WW2. Of course most Jews were killed and most Germans were relocated but it really shows that people were living together (mostly peacefully) for decades before Hitler death machine came.

That's why names have so much power. That's why Polish people get angry when you say Nazis instead of Germans, And Polish Concentration Camps instead of German Concentration Camps in Poland. Sad what kind of gash the German invasion of Poland left on Poland. When you walk around Warsaw, there is a line in the pavement showing where the Warsaw ghetto wall stood. So many Poles lost their lives, Jew and Christian alike. Whenever I visit my ancestral homeland, I am happy to see that Poland is not the somber and grim image portrayed in so many films since WW2. It's nice of you to say the truth, that Jews chose not considered that it were Germans who were antisemites, but Poles. How did this happen? Don't you think it was a conscious political decision? Jews had to hate and blame someone after holocaust and it was more convenient to chose Poland that after the IIWW was broken, poor and sold by the west to Soviets. Germans gave reparations and became (largely) part of the Western world. Poland was completely destroyed during the war. In the XV century Jews were expelled from Spain and found refuge in Poland - millions of Jews found refuge in Poland for hundreds of years. Yet now anti-polish propaganda is spread mainly by Jews, especially American Jews. No wonder Poles don't trust Jews, it's nothing to do with antisemitism, we feel betrayed, sold. It' stime to fix it. It was and is strange to me that Israeli citizens whose family were Polish Jews could be so prejudiced against Poland. For example, an important person in Polish culture is Julian Tuwim, a poet and writer who was Jewish and also considered himself a Pole. Not to mention such a great hero as Marek Edelman. Technically saying Poles and Jews its incorect, that were Poles killed via Hollocaust (Judaism was their religion). Its the same like split of afro-americans who born in america and americans. Nice video :)
I wonder why so many countries attack Poland. I wonder from where those stereotypes came from. My girlfriend she is black, super black.. from the Caribbean. Poland was her first country out of the Caribbean, she was so amaze and shocked that white people there are so friendly, welcoming and warm. Yep, you North Americans are clueless about most things outside your North American bubble . Poland is beautiful, more modern than US, extremely important geopolitical player and is a new European superpower on the rise . And I love you Polish people forever for your role in helping Ukraine stand .

I am a Polish person and I have also been raised listening to the horrible stories told by my gradma about surviving the WW2. So I can relate, I think this experience may cause the perception of many things to be similar to yours :) Cool video :)

I'm from a similar background but a generation younger. My grandma, and his parents, was sent off from Poland to Brazil when the ww2 ended and new here we are planning to go to Poland, to visit and maybe stay but who knows
Why there were so many jews in Poland before WW2? Because Poland was and is very open non-racist country, if yo came to work and respect our law and culture of course. In the middle ages people were running TO Poland because of religious persecution in other countries, there were no witch hunting, they did not burning women on stacks. Poles WERE and ARE good people. Thank you for your movie, hope it will reach more jews.
Thank you. I agree that Poland was the best place for hundreds of years for Jews, though I would not say that there was no antisemitism as there was quite a lot as well.
@@lerubenfeld We have to face a fact. Poland was no saint. We are being taught only about the bright sides. We had dark ones too. But that is life, nothing is black and white. That does not mean also, that other countries were saint. Maybe if we are adult enough and start to admit it, then it will be easier to find a reconciliation.

I’m Polish living in Denmark most of my life and I have a problem with current revision of history . My grandfather spend 4 years in Mauthausen in Austria for helping Jews from Poland to Sweden. Yet according to current version WWII history Poles were the bad guys and Germans good. Probably because they’ve paid too buck for this narration. More Jewish guys like You with objective mind and balls to talk about it can really help on Polish-Jewish relations 👍🏻
nie mam pojecia. Raz tamtedy przejezdzalem i chcialem zwiedzic ale okazalo sie ze austryjacy zlikwidowali ten obóz zaraz po wojnie i nic tam juz nie ma. Thank you that you do not repeat stereotypes about Poland. You see, polishness in our country was never an ethnic concept. Over centuries of our history, we accepted as a Pole everybody who wanted to be a Pole. So, you are very welcome:) Enjoy Poland.

Speaking of culture and folk bands - a dozen or so years ago I was on holiday in Portugal, one evening we were walking around Porto and there was a bandstand in a small square with a folk band (dressed in uniform costumes) singing songs and dancing (I think). My Polish ear immediately picked up familiar sounds, folk melodies very similar to Polish ones but a bit different - surely from the part of Europe like Poland - Lithuania? Latvia or maybe the Czech Republic? It wasn't the climate of Eastern Europe either - certainly not Belarus, Ukraine nor Russia. But I started looking at the young performers on stage and everything stopped adding up, because none of them were blond, and all of them had a rather southern, darker complexion and a Mediterranean beauty. The music definitely did not fit the Balkans, Italy or the southern musical climate in general. I was confused a bit and then I looked behind me and noticed a white bus and in front of it a tall guy dressed in a suit and tie - unusual for a hot summer evening. A moment later I saw a small blue Star of David on the bus.
@@lerubenfeldThey were probably students from some university in Israel, who were on a cultural exchange in Portugal. During my studies, I had a friend who was a member of a university folk song and dance band (pol. Zespół Pieśni i Tańca) - he went abroad with the band at least once a year (France, Spain, Italy) and in return, a folk band from the French or Spanish University came to Poland. In addition, his folk band took part in ceremonies at the University or somewhere in Poland at holiday celebrations or harvest festivals. There are probably such groups in Israel, and the one I saw in Portugal had a repertoire based on folklore from the hometown of its artistic director, from which he returned to Israel. Unfortunately, I didn't register the band's name.

The only thing you did not mention was that the Holocoust was invented, legalized and performed by Germans in occupied territories. Concentration camps/death camps were located in occupied countries such as Germany, Austria, Poland, perhaps also other places. These camps were not created solely for Jews, but also for Poles, Russians, Gypsies etc. Horrific history. My Uncle, Polish catholic from Warsaw, was murdered in concentration camp Mauthausen in Austria. He survived there only 4 months… May all Victims of German nazism rest in peace.
When you talked about learning about Holocaust since you were a kid - same here. I'm Polish and I can't even remember when i learned about the Holocaust first 🤔 I was really shocked when I found that the Americans (and im sorry to be including Canada here too) don't spend as much time on it as we do (but then again, it all happened here). We didn't read Anne Frank though - we had a couple much much darker works as obligatory reading in highschool. In my mind, when I was learning about Polish literature specifically, there was a lot of important Jewish authors out there, and I was sometimes shocked when i saw polishness and jewishness separated outside of that context. To me they were always Poles who also were Jewish, and it's still kind of shocking to see it separated. Glad to see you reconnecting with your heritage!
exactly! For some reason I have always thought of eg. Marek Edelman or Bruno Schultz as both Poles and Jews. In my mind they are both Polish and Jewish.
I wish you well :) Polish language is very difficult but incredibly rewarding once you achieve proficiency. By the way, I recommend you listening to Jacek Kaczmarski's songs - he's a true master of words, in my opinion he's the greatest poet (if that's the right word to describe him) this country has seen. Also, interesting coincidence, from what I remember his mother was Jewish :)

Unfortunately this is also a proof, that we, as Poland, are loosing with Israeli lobbyists or the "heirless inheritance" organisations from Israel. Their claim that the jewish property should "return home" is false. The Jews who died during WWII WERE POLISH CITIZENS. Israel didn't even exist at the time! When you think of it, the foundation these organizations are operating on is absurd: it's as if I as a Pole would claim I need to get some property from a distant place in the world from some unknown to me, deceased roman catholic guy, only on the on the basis that we share the same religion. Michael, please keep recording these videos in English. I'm not sure if you have any "mission" here, but I believe your voice could change some of this false perception, shed some light to people all across the world who basically have zero knowledge about Poland, polish Jewish citizens. Listening to your story, how you realised, that you're actually a descendant of Poles is really heart-warming. I can only imagine how it must feel to come to a land, from Canada which is on a different continent, so far away, to a country, where your family lived, where they fell in love, to see the same places they visited, to eat similar food to food they ate. This is really really interesting.
